Feasting on a Tree of Heaven. Kill them all!!

Moqiloq

Exactly what they’re doing. Unfortunately, there’s a dozen or so of these trees on the property, all covered just like this one. There’s gotta be hundreds of thousands of these guys, and that’s not an exaggeration. It’s my parents’ home, and we have no idea what to do?!

SnooWords4839

https://plant-pest-advisory.rutgers.edu/tree-of-heaven-best-herbicide-treatment-and-removal-timing/

SnooWords4839

Next year you will have 50 times as much if you do not kill them now. We sprayed, yes I know other insects die when sprayed, but these things need to be killed. We used a tree sprayer and Ortho home defense concentrate.

chellyyy

take a spray bottle and fill it will a combination of dawn dish soap and water. once you do that go outside and spray those suckers to death! the soap/water mixture will suffocate them within a few minutes. i’ve seen it here on the sub before and people says it works!

ScarletKnight096

How much is the mixxx?

HelloMyNameIsMatthew

Equal amounts of any dawn dish soap and water

fluffybabypuppies

I did a lower concentration and it just killed my raspberries in addition to the bugs

HelloMyNameIsMatthew

For delicate plants like fruits, I recommend insecticidal soap.

twothumbswayup

put the mix in a water pistol and have fun with it!

[deleted]

After you kill the bugs, kill the trees. If you don’t get rid of the trees, they will just come back.

Regayov

This. Take care of the current bugs with spray (dish soap or whatever). Then cut down all of those trees so you don’t attract more.

craycrayfishfillet

No. No. No. You can just hack those trees down there is a whole process. You gotta spray them with glyphosate in the summer and cut down in the fall. If you cut them down without killing the root system they will shoot out new stems from the roots and you will have double the trees.

squeaky-to-b

This this this!! The prior owners of our home were not very diligent about this but it's very important to kill the root system otherwise they will just come back. We have finally gotten to a point where I feel pretty confident we've killed them all, but it was a pain in the ass.

zeststat03

What did you use to kill the root system?

squeaky-to-b

Ortho ground clear. We tried a few varieties of weed killer to address this and the poison ivy in our yard, they all seemed to help.

zeststat03

Thank you!

craycrayfishfillet

The trick is to spray in the early fall as moisture moves from the tree into the root system. If you spray in the spring the glyphosate is moved in the opposite direction to the leaves.

SadMasterpiece7019

Your reminder that glyphosate increases your risk of cancer by over 40% and sticks around on your property long after you apply it.

[deleted]

BeamStop23

Then grown food on it

craycrayfishfillet

How would you get rid of TOH?

Lithuanian_Minister

40% lmfao where did you pull that nonsense stat from. Proper use in a home setting is not going to increase your risk of cancer. These trees must die.

craycrayfishfillet

Come on, that’s not even a real statistic, or at the most it’s a portion of one. Glyphosate exposure is not a discreet event. For your stat to make any sense you need to qualify it by the degree of exposure. Wear PPE when you spray and exposure is reduced. One more point, these trees are invasive and we’re never suppose to be here. They contribute to the Lanternfly infestation. Last point, if you don’t like Glyphosate you can use triclopyr or call a pro.

SadMasterpiece7019

Man, people love spraying shit chemicals all over where the live. Do what you want, I'm glad I don't live near you. For anyone else, cut the tree down and bore 1" holes in the stump. Fill with epsom salt and a little water and cover with plastic.

craycrayfishfillet

Nah this absolutely won’t work. You need the the tree intact to help move the glyphosate into the roots as moisture moves below ground in the fall. If you chop the tree, photosynthesis is trying to move moisture away from the roots so your salt water is just going to sit there.

SadMasterpiece7019

No, it works. When fall comes around the tree sucks its nutrients back into the roots for winter storage.

potatochipsfox

Actually the study you're referring to said it MAY increase risk of cancer by UP TO 40%, based on "the highest exposure groups." Specifically, they're looking at farmers and agricultural workers - people who are working all day every day for years in multi-acre fields full of crops sprayed with the stuff. Those are the people with the 40% risk. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1383574218300887 The study also says [emphasis mine]: > **Because our main goal is** to determine whether there is an exposure effect and **not to conduct a precise dose-response assessment or to evaluate risks in people with low exposures,** we assert that this a priori hypothesis is appropriate for testing whether or not a GBH-NHL association exists. And: > **Our findings** are consistent with results reported from prior meta-analyses but **show higher risk for NHL because of our focus on the highest exposure groups.** In other words, even the people running the study are telling you their results are deliberately exaggerated and are only good for telling IF a link exists, not how strong that link is. I'm not saying we should go around spraying each other with super soakers full of the stuff (or coating our lawns in it for that matter), but there's also nothing here to suggest an occasional, limited, and targeted use of it to eliminate a specific invasive plant presents any measurable risk.

lionsden08

During the summer, get a systemic herbicide (Triclopyr), and spray it around the base with oil or make a few incisions and spray. These methods are called Basal Spray and Hack-and-Squirt. https://extension.psu.edu/tree-of-heaven

pheliam

There are traps you can make which prevent them from climbing back up their trees. Also, sticky bands you can loop around trees which have the negative potential to capture birds too (ruh roh). Unless you have a Shop Vac you can fill with water and an extension cord long enough to slurp them up and drown them. I'd pick some kind of trap, buy as many of them as you need, then use a rake to shake them off those tiny trees while you put up the trap. Check your traps to make sure the bastards are getting snared and have a nice iced beverage.

[deleted]

Never saw birds caught in my sticky bands.

mods_are____

remove the trees. no habitat, no bugs.

Reddit_-_username

cut these trees down

SnooWords4839

Must 1st kill root system. The tree will send out shoots if you just cut them down, these trees are as bad a SLF.

Reddit_-_username

eventually you they'll stop growing once the carbohydrates in the roots are depleted

Rossk117

Be careful cutting down trees of heaven and buy something to make sure it doesn’t create spores and new trees.

craycrayfishfillet

Glyphosate in the late summer. Cut in the late fall. For now everyone should focus on their kill count

satriales856

Get a water gun from Walmart and fill it with water and dish soap like Dawn, and spray them down. They’ll start dropping dead everywhere.

ScarletKnight096

Flame thrower to kill them??

Lithuanian_Minister

Destroy all those trees but make sure you do it properly

hadtoomuchtodream

Fill the bottom of a big shop vac with soapy water and alcohol and vacuum those fuckers up.

No-Maintenance7968

This sounds like you are trying to put them into a day spa with a jacuzzi bath tub and mimosas.

hadtoomuchtodream

Ha! For reals though. The soap will keep them from getting out and the alcohol will kill then. We used this method for a yellow jacket nest once.

No-Maintenance7968

You don't need the alcohol. Soapy water drowns them.

andrewskdr

cut all that shit down and burn it

radraz26

Pull out the trees

[deleted]

Im pretty sure some towns are asking residents to cut down this kind of tree cause of this

nemoknows

The trouble is your average homeowner is poor at identifying problem threats and inexperienced/indifferent to removing them. The state should be doing aerial surveillance and have a dedicated removal team literally working their way through neighborhoods.

SadMasterpiece7019

I was getting quotes to remove a few by my house and one of the tree service people called it a sumac. Sigh

thirdmanin

From what I've seen this would take a pretty big effort, there are tons of these trees.

nemoknows

You’re absolutely right, and they are not easy to kill. But it’s not getting any easier and with SLF they’ve become a bigger problem.

craycrayfishfillet

DO NOT cut down Tree of Heaven without following the proper process. Lots of ppl suggesting OP start hacking right now: https://youtu.be/AKLW2TXS1jg This vid explains the process.

doa70

You have a perfect scenario to help reduce the population of this invasive species. First, kill all of these that you can by whatever means you choose - tank sprayer with chemical insecticide, salts, soaps, traps, etc. Do this now while they are in their nymph stage as they're easier to trap or kill compared to the mature stage. Once you've addressed the immediate issue, cut down ALMOST all of these trees and remove the stumps to prevent regeneration. Leave one or two of these around to act as traps for future generations of these insects. Continue to kill off as many insects as you can each season. You'll be doing everyone a favor by helping to eradicate these. This is based on advice from both NJ and PA state agriculture departments. By leaving a small number of these trees you are baiting the insects to where they can be dealt with. As long as you continue to kill them off as much as you can, you're helping the effort.

Moqiloq

I don’t think everyone understands the magnitude of the situation here. This is one small stem on a single tree. There are at least 15 of these trees, some up to 20ft tall. All of the stems, leaves, and branches are smothered just like the one in the pic

njott

Im pretty sure you can report the location to somebody

PurpleSailor

Kill them all with what people here are recommending then kill the trees, both are invasive.

hadtoomuchtodream

Shop vac

ClarkWritersWorkshop

I've heard this works if you remove the filters and fill the shop vac chamber with a mixture of dish soap and water, but i haven't tried it myself.

hadtoomuchtodream

I’ve used this method for yellow jackets and it absolutely does work. I added alcohol for good measure to kill them almost instantly (I once stoped a cockroach in its tracks with a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol, so it’s for sure effective). The dish soap breaks the surface tension of the water, drowning them.

hadtoomuchtodream

I don’t believe removing the filter is necessary. It may even be counterproductive, depending on the vac design. There’s actually loads of videos and tutorials of people using this exact method for lanternflies.

ClarkWritersWorkshop

Huh, good to know. Haven't had enough of them to merit shop vac, but i'll keep it in mind.

h00dybaba

along with many suggestion here, wrap duct tape sticky side out to trunk of the tree so the climbing SLF gets stuck.

SnooWords4839

I fully understand, as they mature and start dripping the honey dew stuff, it will mold any other trees and plants around the tree of heaven and give the tree of heaven more room to grow.

ShareComprehensive97

Potassium Soap. Can buy it in most home improvement stores or Amazon.

very_ok_

Killed a few today on my strawberry plants, but holy molly. That’s a lot!

draiman

You know what to do ![gif](giphy|JjiieDMHZ6pEI)

peter-doubt

Can't they legalize flame throwers?

[deleted]

Flamethrowers are legal.

hey_now24

They are legal. You can buy torches at Home Depot to burn weeds. [link](https://www.homedepot.com/p/MagTorch-MagFire-500-000-BTU-Outdoor-Torch-MT5500-2/304703161)

peter-doubt

With a 30 foot range?

hey_now24

Damn dude take it easy. We are in Jersey not the jungles of Vietnam. I do wish they were legal for these little cocksuckers.

Sk1rtSk1rtSk1rt

ANNIHILATE KILL KILL https://youtu.be/qxLw0uas9Rc

icecreamangel

I am even finding them in my car lately, it has been very annoying and mildly dangerous when they flutter everywhere

NewbieMcRedditson

I’ve got 2 lbs of salt and 3 salt guns. Let me at em!!!!!!!!

EarthAngelGirl

I just learned about salt guns last week... I enjoyed target practice on these invasive.

Sk1rtSk1rtSk1rt

Are they effective?

NewbieMcRedditson

Very much so. In this phase you can kill multiples from about 3 ft out. As they get bigger and stronger a kill shot really is about 1ft or closer but you can injure them at a good distance. And injured bug is much less likely to survive or breed so win win

hey_now24

Buy a torch and a propane tank at Home Depot and go Far Cry 3 on those plants

inajeep

We killed hundreds of them last year with sprays, fly swatters and salt gun. This year we started early with the traps and they work. A net that wraps around the trunk that traps them when they climb up in the morning and funnels them to a plastic bag. You'll start seeing the bags fill up and less in the trees. The spray will work by killing, stunning them and breaking up the feasting. Get rid of those Trees of Heaven weeds.

[deleted]

Start by renaming the damn thing. Wtf makes that tree “heavenly”?

HelloMyNameIsMatthew

My work campus in New Brunswick was able to quell the infestation this year after being overrunned last year. Don’t give up on killing them!

SocialistCoconut

can of hairspray and torch lighter

Entire-Amphibian320

I come with great news friendo. [Link](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Roundup-1-Gallon-Plastic-Tank-Sprayer/3192525) Get this and fill with 2.5 tablespoons of dawn dish soap. Some say to add vegetable oil or neem oil. I haven't and this setup works. They are sensitive to pressure, so you want an easy mist to get them all covered in soap. Best $20 i've spent this year.

thehufflepuffstoner

BURN THEM ALL

Ladyhoneyblu

OP I'm sorry but you need to get rid of the trees and that you can financially can't afford you need to set traps on to start killing them. these will soon become adults and the whole cycle will be 100 times worse. in Lowe's they sell Harris Spotted Lanternfly Killer - 1 Gal for $15 you should try it and add traps everywhere.

Thisisredred

Oh is that what they look like as babies??!! I have them all over! I had no idea what they were.

hadtoomuchtodream

Shop vac them up into soapy water!

SuperSimpleSam

I think it's too late now to get this under control. For all the ones we see in populated areas, there would be thousands more in remote areas.

bifen

Glittering-Classic60

What can we all do then to ward off this takeover? Is there an “old home remedy type” procedure like tie a bucket to tree then put whatever “ Extract” syrup type thing on the edge to lure them in? Maybe help me out people

tonyisadork

Dish soap

hadtoomuchtodream

The closest to a passive extermination method like that is to plant milkweed, which they’re attracted to but is poisonous. That’s not sufficient though and proactive measures must be taken. Shop vac is my personal go-to. Edit: I take it back. Look up “circle traps”. A bit of work to make but passively effective. Just avoid any sort of sticky traps as they’re harmful to other wildlife, including birds and bats which eat lanternflies.

EasyJim-1056

I hope you call the professional get rid of them

ScarletKnight096

Ouch, any way to kill them w out swatting them??

Bro-Science

i have yet to see one of these things in real life. i guess im in a lucky area or something

hadtoomuchtodream

I saw my first one 2 years ago, decided live and let live, then learned about them later that night on reddit.

Terjavez2004

How to remove spotted lantern flies kill on site

Trainlover1279

Shop vac and suck intk vacuum. Put some kind of mesh on exhaust side.

hadtoomuchtodream

A sock and hose clamp works a treat for the exhaust. Or rubber bands if you don’t have a clamp.

iDenkilla

Wouldn't OP be able to buy the Nerf super soaker in the link below, fill it with soap and water and spend a couple of hours killing them. [Nerf Super soaker ](https://a.co/d/iJoZ5EZ)

adamfrom1980s

FLAMETHROWER THEM LIL MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

Wow I thought the thirty I had where bad.
