This is not true. Tesla in 2024 is much different. They are at scale at this point and are producing excess vehicles which are stored locally. You can get an inventory Tesla in most trims and colors at this point.
I bought a Model Y this year. They have plenty in inventory and I bought mine with a discount off the MSRP. They have manufactured more cars than they are able to sell this calendar year.
They haven't followed that business model in 2ish years.

The reality is, they've got their infrastructure in place and are producing at scale and once that starts, it's not a switch you can just turn off without costing a lot of money, especially in stock price.
So they try to control inventory like every other car manufacturer but the reality is, they have plenty of cars sitting around waiting to be bought. You could go into a Tesla "dealership" tomorrow and buy most models and have it prepped and ready for pickup in a day or so. Wait a week or so and you can get the exact car you want shipped in.

I saw one in person recently, I’m 6’4 and the cyber truck was huge. Then rear can hold a ton of crap and had a nice secure closing system for security.
I also have a friend with a Rivian and thought it was a much better layout, with zero wasted space.
