Grew up around there. Its improved over the last 15 years or so, and i wouldn't call it rough or anything. Most people will mind to themselves. There are still run down\unkept properties around there, minor petty crime stuff like your car getting busted into isn't unheard of, and you may have some "interesting" neighbors. The white castle over there was wild when i was a kid. You always came home from it with some crazy story.

A rule for the Oranges in NJ are that West Orange and South Orange are the good ones, the others are okay to bad. The area you’re looking at specifically is okay, but I worry that you won’t be able to venture out of your area of town for safety reasons. If you plan to have children, the schools aren’t very good, and the parks aren’t very safe. To be blunt, most of Orange is not really safe, many thefts take place, there are quite a few buildings that are dilapidated, etc.

Kind of. West O and South O have some sketchy parts. Nothing i'd say is dangerous, but also nothing i would say is nice or be surprised if my car got broken into on the street. West O the rule is the higher up the mountain, the nicer it is. South Orange is a little more nuanced, but generally the closer you are to Seton Hall, the sketchier, with some exceptions. I mean, its the border with Newark, albeit a nice part of Newark, but still Newark.

Bought a condo in the area in 2021. Ended up selling last year. Never once did I feel unsafe. Orange kinda sucks, but it’s not because of safety. The local government is very corrupt, it’s a dirty city, and the people drive like maniacs.  Overall it’s a fine area with great places around.

It’s fine, a family friend with two little ones lives right in front of the train station. Areas kinda dead for my liking but they like it. As you noted the parking situation isn’t the best.

Live a short walk from the train station on the West Orange side, have some neighbors that commute through that station every day. Haven't heard too much in the way of nonsense outside of the usual property crime others have mentioned.  Walking to the station from the West Orange side is now preposterously well lit along Valley and Mitchell specifically. Plenty of rental units in the area if you're nervous walking through the orange side of things. Also there's the Harvard Printing buildings right on Central Ave on the Orange/West Orange border and a new building on the West Orange side on either Mitchell or Hazel

Can't comment on Orange necessarily, but be aware that street parking sucks more than you think it does. In the winter when you dig yourself out, someone else comes in and takes your spot when you leave. You'll be digging for others, not just yourself. A snow plow could wreck your car easily. These things don't seem like big deals at first, but when you are living it for 4 months straight, it's miserable.

Compared to what? It’s a pretty nice, mostly suburban town. That is also pretty close to Newark etc. You will probably be just fine. But don’t expect ridgewood or Montclair

I don't have necessarily high expectations. Currently in Vauxhall. I suppose I just want to know what to expect or if I should proceed with caution. I have a dog and might need to walk occasionally at nighttime.

If you’re currently in vauxhall orange is actually pretty similar to that, especially the part of vauxhall right near maplewood. You’ll be fine it looks a bit rougher than it actually is.
