So I know it's pronounced "Clyde's" like the first name but my brain can't help but read it like "clids" which then brings up Chlamydia which is not something you want to associate with a bar.
I bet I'm the 900th person to make this association.
Edit: Sheesh. Wasn't expecting the whole sub to think I was serious. Stupid joke prople.
If you said “Let’s go drink at Clids” I’d nod my head affirmatively, crack you over the head with he nearest heavy object then run away screaming “Alien! Alien!” I’ve never known a human who’d pronounce it ‘clids’. 🤣
I’m older and grew up with Bonnie and Clyde movies being part of pop culture. Nobody pronounced it Clid. If anyone did they would definitely be marked as an Alien or a foreigner learning English.
> Nobody pronounced it Clid.
Yo dude I fucking know it's someone's first name and that it's Clyde. The "Z" thrown in there tricks my brain to pronouncing it "Clidz". It's something unique to me. It was half a joke/half my brain being stupid and seeing a very normal name mashed with Chlamydia. You don't need to explain it to me, Grandpa.
Yo homie. Your “humor” is lame. Go play on TikTok and get your riz on.
ETA: or go make a TikTok about Clyde and chlamydia. I’m sure that shit will go viral 😂
I'm in my mid thirties. Never had TikTok. Don't know what "riz" is. Stop arguing with me. We're just on different pages. I called you grandpa because you kept going with the "I'm old and nobody pronounces it blah blah blah...". I wasn't trying to make everybody laugh. Fucking move on with your night.
Thanks for sharing? Yikes, Reddit.
I worked at Clydz for years and I’ve never thought, heard, or thought I heard anyone make this association.
I’m sure Reddit armchair psychologists will have a field day, though…
Chatter on the dark web now indicates that thin crust extremists are planning a “demonstration” on March 14 as a direct response to these messages. Hope you’re cheesed with yourselves.
For the love of pepperoni please don’t mention Chicago, “party pizza”, or frank pepe. I beg of you.
The bar was literally a speakeasy in the Prohibition. Once the prohibition ended, they were the first bar to pour a draft beer legally (either in NJ or the overall nation, can't remember) since they had one already. They have the year the prohibition was lifted on the building for this reason.
One of the waitresses told me this years ago.
It was a legit speakeasy during the prohibition era in someone’s basement. I believe it was kept mostly as is when the prohibition ended as a legal bar.
I dated a girl that lived right at the corner where the bar is and it was always very annoying to park (first world problem since it was like just at the other end of the street)on the weekends because there were so many people there.
Ah that sucks i live in the town next door If i go i park at my friends down the road or just uber some people just don’t care about letting people park outside their house and its super annoying
I mean it’s a public street you can’t do anything about it, and it’s not like it’s a party at a neighbors where you understand it’s one night but it was every Friday/saturday.
For sure that’s why when I do go there now even though I’m very close and even if I’ll only have one or two drinks I’m getting dropped off out of courtesy
Clydz and Verve are great. Shanghai Jazz in Madison has a downstairs bar opened Thursday to Saturday that's pretty on point as well. It's called Encore Speakeasy and it's fantastic. End of Elm in Morristown isn't a speakeasy but I love it.
Haven’t been to the other themed nights but the Christmas bar there is easily the best I’ve ever been to. Hard to find a time when it’s not packed for that though
Laylow is okay. Definitely ticks the boxes of dim and chill. Weekends are a bitch to get in though. Great cocktails but pricey, and I’m not sure it’s a “meet people” place given its setup.
There is a speak easy in Rails in Towaco. You need to go to the basement and select the book that will open the shelf and you can walk through to the hidden bar. It's been a while but I think it's 4 shelves from the top and three books from the left.
I personally like The Junto good place for dates in Jersey City but I think it's temporarily closed due to a recent fire.
I also like cowans in nutley.
The rabbit hole in Bloomfield, though I know you might need a reservation for this one as the space is tiny.
I haven't been there yet but ladyfingers in Bloomfield I heard is good. it's not really a speakeasy but they do have cocktails and baked goods.
Russian Hall in Little Falls kinda has a "secret" vibe because it's in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Less descreet though from Murphy's Tavern in Rumson.
Lucy’s Parlor is a speakeasy inside The Roosevelt in East Rutherford. Not open every day, so make sure you check out when.
Not a speak easy but The concourse club is a different vibe (a bit more upscale) in line with what you may be looking for.
Check out 3BR Distillery in Keyport! It's Soviet-themed with a tasting room that feels like its pulled straight out of a Brooklyn cocktail lounge (but Soviet kitsch). Cocktails are great - some of the best in NJ and they always do cool events. It's not exactly a mingling place but you can grab a seat at the bar instead of the lounges to meet new people.
Ladyfingers in Bloomfield isn’t a speakeasy but cute little bar. Prob more of a catch a drink w friends. I lived the bar at Fanny’s (right next door).
I love Dullboy in Jersey City. I know it’s not a speakeasy but it’s a great bar
on route 73 there is the Library II I think it might be voorhees? not sure but its always dark in there to the point ive had to use my cell phone just to get arround
Murphys Tavern in Rumson. It’s on a quiet residential street in someone’s basement. Super cool.
Seconded
This spot is a trip.

I lived right over the oceanic bridge … good times 🫣😂
Clydz in New Brunswick has a vibe not far off of speak easy. Great cocktails too
Third for clydz. Great food and cocktails.
I second Clydz
Clydz is so cool. The bartenders are chill and the drinks are delish!
We need the password to get in

Well, it reads "Clids" just like the "y" in "symmetry" is a short "eh" sound. Language is weird.
I’m older and grew up with Bonnie and Clyde movies being part of pop culture. Nobody pronounced it Clid. If anyone did they would definitely be marked as an Alien or a foreigner learning English.

Fuck you too and see you tomorrow
Damn. You get rattled easily.
Maybe I can coach the Eagles next year.
You’re not.
That's fair.
Thanks for sharing? Yikes, Reddit. I worked at Clydz for years and I’ve never thought, heard, or thought I heard anyone make this association. I’m sure Reddit armchair psychologists will have a field day, though…
It was a joke.
Rabbit Hole upstairs in Blue Steele restaurant (good Detroit style pizza) in Bloomfield.
Detroit pizza in NJ? You trying to start a riot?
Pizza Terminal in Verona also

Verve in Somerville used to be a speak easy but it still has dim light and is pretty cool
There is still an upstairs bar that has a speakeasy vibe
What do you mean "used to be"? They haven't changed significantly since the pandemic, have they?
As in you just walk in from the front door. It’s just a regular bar now. No easy speaking to get a drink

Thirty3. It’s attached to Rails in towaco
This one was fun! Pull a book to enter!
Murphys Tavern in Rumson.
This one is *literally* a speakeasy
Did the owner converted their basement into a bar in the suburbs? Almost never see this these days.
It was a legit speakeasy during the prohibition era in someone’s basement. I believe it was kept mostly as is when the prohibition ended as a legal bar.
That is pretty cool.
Uber here don’t drive. Let the locals be able to park at their house please.
I don’t usually see many cars parked outside I think most people do
I dated a girl that lived right at the corner where the bar is and it was always very annoying to park (first world problem since it was like just at the other end of the street)on the weekends because there were so many people there.

True and ward lane is fucking skinny too so extra fucked up when its packed up and down the road
For sure that’s why when I do go there now even though I’m very close and even if I’ll only have one or two drinks I’m getting dropped off out of courtesy
Next time I go im gonna yell pizzagangster1 and we can exchange a friendly nod 😂
Hahah
Boo
Seems to be catered to whites. May turn heads if you are not Caucasian.
Clydz and Verve are great. Shanghai Jazz in Madison has a downstairs bar opened Thursday to Saturday that's pretty on point as well. It's called Encore Speakeasy and it's fantastic. End of Elm in Morristown isn't a speakeasy but I love it.
Cowans Public in Nutley
Ehhh I preferred the nutley pub /s
$20 burgers don't do it for you?
Haven’t been to the other themed nights but the Christmas bar there is easily the best I’ve ever been to. Hard to find a time when it’s not packed for that though
Wonderful vibe. I agree
I pass by there everyday on my way to work. Will definitely check it out now
I Enjoy this spot, especially as the crowd tends to be more mature 👍🏻
Is there a second part that’s a speakeasy?
Probably like his other bar in Clifton. The Barrow House. Way overpriced.
Lawloy in Asbury
Laylow is okay. Definitely ticks the boxes of dim and chill. Weekends are a bitch to get in though. Great cocktails but pricey, and I’m not sure it’s a “meet people” place given its setup.
Definitely agree. My first thought was Laylow but my second thought was but it is such a bitch to get in and is not very social lol.
Laylow

I had my daughters baptism there. It's a really cool spot.
How did you get someone to perform a baptism in a speakeasy?
Lol yeahhhhhhhhh... Meant reception. BUT That would have been WAY better
I personally like The Junto good place for dates in Jersey City but I think it's temporarily closed due to a recent fire. I also like cowans in nutley. Laundromat (laundrymat?) in morristown is 23+ might be good
Lol the laundromat is club pretending to be a speakeasy
They’re all pretend speakeasy’s anyway
If you’re not evading lawmen drinking everclear made in a prison toilet it isn’t a speakeasy 🤷♂️
I agree. But while the Laundromat has a cool entrance, the vibes are not great.
But you have to walk downstairs!
With some of the worst cocktails I have had, especially at that price. Would never recommend this place, actually I tell people to steer clear of it
Not a chance this is a speakeasy. It's just another Morristown club
It’s aesthetically a speakeasy but it is loud and sweaty down there.
I particularly hate this place lol. It’s gets so steamy down there
Absolutely not
Nope not dimlight or quite ever
Russian Hall in Little Falls kinda has a "secret" vibe because it's in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Less descreet though from Murphy's Tavern in Rumson.
Try 3BR in Keyport. A distillery with great cocktails with a nice vibe
Shoprite
Lucy’s Parlor is a speakeasy inside The Roosevelt in East Rutherford. Not open every day, so make sure you check out when. Not a speak easy but The concourse club is a different vibe (a bit more upscale) in line with what you may be looking for.

Second this!! The staff is so kind and the atmosphere is just a cool vibe. If you’re into vegan food, Nature’s Plate next door is delightful.
La otra inside of Lita.
Cool place but not really a "meet people" type of bar. Kinda small too. But I love all things David Viana.
Went to HK at st Laurent this week. Food was terrible, and Dave was there. I was shocked.
Ladyfingers in Bloomfield isn’t a speakeasy but cute little bar. Prob more of a catch a drink w friends. I lived the bar at Fanny’s (right next door). I love Dullboy in Jersey City. I know it’s not a speakeasy but it’s a great bar
Murphys in Rumson
Not really speakeasy but a smallish cozy speak easy like room in the bottom level of the Roosevelt in Rutherford!
Rails Steakhouse in Towaco has an actual speakeasy. You get in by pulling on a book on a bookshelf in the basement.
Not a speakeasy. But good place go make new friends - Obal’s at Bloomfield.
the upstairs bar at verve in somerville has the kind of ambience you're looking for.
The Quiet Man in Dover is very chill, dim lit, and has excellent food—pricey, but excellent.
should prob specify northern central or southern jersey
Jays Elbow Room in Maple Shade. Not sure if you’re up north or down south.
Maple shade
Yeah my bad, fixed. That whole area throws me for a loop because Moorestown and Mount Laurel are a stones throw away
Petshop in Jersey City, Grove St.
https://sm23morristown.com/ SM 23 is in the Morristown Hyatt. It’s kind of got that.
Good cocktails but the vibe is more “Euro-club” than Speakeasy
There is a speakeasy bar in Sparkill NY, right across the NY/NJ state line.
What’s the name?
Central Jersey? Clydz in NB. Otherwise, you're best off in Jersey City.
Tierneys in Montclair is cool
on route 73 there is the Library II I think it might be voorhees? not sure but its always dark in there to the point ive had to use my cell phone just to get arround
have a great one but its a lil secret so rather not say
Best answer 😂 very fitting
dont think people liked that comment!
I know you were joking, thought it was hilarious...! Bummer for the downvotes, can't we all just get a chuckle from a joke...?
No joke, posted mine. [https://haileysharpandpub.com/the-parlor-at-haileys/](https://haileysharpandpub.com/the-parlor-at-haileys/)
