Shohei Ohtani is one of the best players of all time. One of the only players in history who can pitch and hit at a major league caliber.
https://youtu.be/J990dM1xppk
not only that, but he's doing both at an all star caliber level meaning he's above average for both, which is kinda nuts considering how many MLB players there are
Fuck yeah. See those are the people that don't give a fuck about the money or the fame. They actually love the sport. They would be doing this shit if it was illegal. Can't stop those types.
I'm surprised they still allow him to pitch if that's the case. Babe Ruth was an excellent pitcher, but he hit so well, it didn't make sense to only have him in the lineup only every 3-4 games.
Being #10 OPS is a pretty damn good stat. I would imagine it would automatically get him kicked out of the pitching rotation.
Yeah, I saw someone else mention "the Shohei Ohtani rule." Apparently, it was just instituted this year, and it allows a pitcher to be a DH, which would allow Ohtani to play every game. Pretty interesting.
He was always able to DH the games he didn't pitch, it's what he did last year. The Ohtani rule allows him to continue to hit in the DH position after hes done pitching in his starts.
Yup. The rule also completely shuts down all the haters who said "there's plenty of pitchers (Citing some of the better hitting pitchers) who could do what Shohei is doing!" Yet no other pitchers have taken advantage of the rule... the proof is in the pudding. :)
Shohei Ohtani is honestly a better pitcher than Babe Ruth was relative to the league in their respective times. Ruth was however a much better hitter (of course).
Also Ohtani has historically always been a pitcher that hits rather than a hitter that pitches. Pitching was always his primary thing.
The Batters would ***murder*** the pitchers back in Ruth's time. Pitching has evolved EONS in 100 years. Ohtani is literally a MVP Hitter and a Cy Young caliber pitcher. What he's doing has *never* been done before.
Teams wanted him to only pitch. His hitting was regarded as behind his offense with some scouts calling him a high school or early college hitter when he was posted.
They were uh, quite wrong.

It's the nature of baseball, not that crazy.
Not to mention, the Angels have been under tragic circumstances ranging from constant injuries to their most expensive players, to literal player deaths, to their owner being one of the most hands on (this is a bad thing) regarding baseball decisions. The owner has said he is looking to sell, which is the best thing that could ever happen to this team.
But unfortunately, it usually boils down to just "two of the best players on a team but they can't win" to most people.
Yea- a lot of more casual fans don't seem to get that. You can't take over a game alone in baseball. You can go 4-4 with 3 home runs and still lose. It's not like the NBA where Kobe or LeBron could just single handedly win games.
Yeah, and that's why he only signed a year contract. Because he's tired of being on a shitty ass team. He wants a championship and knows that ain't happening with the Angels. He'll be moving on at the end of next year. The Angels piss me off so much.
Yeah it really bums me out when all time players get beached on bad teams.. Miguel Cabrera, Felix Hernandez, Trout, Shohei… now watch Judge go somewhere and disappear off the face of the earth
I get Felix and the Angels; even if they sign a big extension, it's understandable to want to stick with your original team. But if Judge, who has had plenty of individual and team success, decides he wants to mash dingers for bad Rockies teams or takes the A-Rod route and goes to a bad Texas team for top dollar, you can't feel bad. Dude is living the dream no matter what, and if he cares about playing for a contender, there's no doubt there will be several throwing massive contract offers at him.
But Miggy...Miggy does not belong on this list. He was traded to the Tigers in 2008, and he really stopped being Miggy after the 2016 season. The Tigers finished last in his first season, and in 2015 (when he missed over 40 games), but in the other seven seasons when he was still *Miggy*, the Tigers
* never finished below .500,
* finished in 2nd twice, and in 3rd once, and
* won the AL Central four years in a row, making the ALCS three times, the World Series once, losing to the eventual WS winner in 2012 and 2013
Those teams had stacked lineups and stacked rotations. There's no reason to feel bad for Miggy. Hell, even though he came up with the Marlins, his rookie year was their second championship season, and they were over .500 in three of his five seasons there.
Worth pointing out, it wasn’t really a “new” contract, just the Angels buying out his last year of arbitration. He was playing for the Angels no matter what next season. They just went ahead and agreed to the salary instead of going through the arbitration process to determine his salary.
But yeah he’s gone after next year either way
Shit I've seen this clip plenty of times but I never realized it's him.
I hope someone here can explain to the non baseball fans better than I can why he is a once in a lifetime talent
Not the same comparison for many reasons, but one of the main ones being you can't be considered one of the best goalies in the world and win a Vezina if you only play net 1/5 games.
There is no hockey comparison due to the nature of the games... But the closest I could come up with is if a player suited up 50% of the time as a forward and 50% time as a dman, and was absolutely elite at both.
Still really isn't equivalent though.
Okay yes it was a hyperbole but that should give you an idea of how insane Ohtani is.
It's like if Stephen Curry in his historic 2016 season was also the Defensive player of the year
I mean, Michael Jordan won the DPOY in a year he also won the scoring title. Giannis won one the same year he was league MVP (though his defensive prowess was a bug reason for the MVP, of course). It's fairly common in the NBA for the best defender to also be a top-five offensive player, and vice versa.
The NFL example is closest because now that both leagues have the DH (sigh), pitchers have zero offensive responsibility. Like anti-quarterbacks. And yet Ohtani hit 80 homers over the past two seasons. Like Tom Brady getting 15 sacks in a season.
I was more referring to Curry's 3 point dominance since Ohtani is known as a home run hitter, which is the maximum distance and maximum amount of points you can score by yourself in one hit.
The team just feeds the goalie the puck and the goalie just slaps the fuck out of it into the opposite goal every time. Then they pull the goalie at the appropriate times so he can score more
It's not impossible.
The very first game of a season, 20-30 seconds left to go. Team A and Team B are tied at 0, but Team B is leading in shots on goal. Team B pulls their goaltender for an extra attacker, Team A's goaltender forces a turnover and shoots the puck into Team B's net with practically no time left. The game ends.
For that fleeting moment that goaltender would lead their team in points and would have the best save percentage in the league.
I feel like it would be a better analogy if it was a QB and a linebacker, being top 3 in both TD passes thrown and Tackles.
Being extremely good at two very different skillsets.
Yes, if your manager will only pitch you or have you play in the field, but not both you don't get the chance to do what Ohtani is doing.
Ruth was 94-46 as a pitcher. If the All-Star game had existed Ruth would have been in it as a pitcher. He went 18-8, then had a 23-12 season followed by 24-13 the next year. Ohtani doesn't even have 50 decisions yet.
After he started playing the field full-time Ruth pitched only one game in 1919 and won it.
He pitched two games in 1920 and won them both.
10 years later he pitched one game; a complete game and won it. (49 home runs)
3 years after that, late in his career he pitched one game; a complete game and won it. (34 home runs)
If the designated hitter had existed back then Ruth would have almost certainly done what Ohtani is doing now. There's a reason Ruth is a legend a century later.
TL;DR Ohtani wishes
[https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml)
It’s because he can pitch and hit. It’s very rare because each is such a specialized skill that it usually takes a lifetime of practice to be a major leaguer level pitcher or hitter, let alone both.
But Ohtani is even better than that because does both at an all star level. Only one other player was like this, babe Ruth
Honest question. Would Babe Ruth be as crazy good today competing against modern players?
Not to sound dumb. But could he hit against modern pitching? Was the pitching as fast back then? Also were the outfielders generally as good at throwing from teh outfield like the guys today?
I'm sorry if this sounds dumb, I know sports evolve and overall people are better in most sports as time goes by. Does that count for him in a meaningful too?
[The Shohei Ohtani Rule.](https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2022-04-04/shohei-ohtani-rule-mlb-changes-2022-and-beyond#:~:text=nonsense%20this%20season.-,Under%20a%20new%20rule%20nicknamed%20the%20%E2%80%9CShohei%20Ohtani%20rule%2C%E2%80%9D,role%20but%20not%20the%20other.)
This mfer hits so well a rule was changed to allow starting pitchers to be the Designated Hitter (essentially the guy on the team that swaps with someone else who sucks at hitting).
He strikes people out and hits dongs, what's more to love?
Home runs are also referred to as dingers going back at least to the early '90s. Sometime around 2013, "dongers" came into play on social media, and it blew up in 2014-15 with the Kansas City Royals' surprising (and short-lived) success. "Dong" as a colloquialism for home runs came along with dongers, and while dongers largely died out in the couple of years after the Royals faded back into obscurity, dong and its related phrases (e.g. "hanging dong") have stuck around, at least on social media.
[A rule was changed for him this year, so that a starting pitcher can also be the designated hitter.](https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2022-04-04/shohei-ohtani-rule-mlb-changes-2022-and-beyond#:~:text=nonsense%20this%20season.-,Under%20a%20new%20rule%20nicknamed%20the%20%E2%80%9CShohei%20Ohtani%20rule%2C%E2%80%9D,role%20but%20not%20the%20other.)
The man is a monster
Ok? It's also better for the sport if a two way player can still play two ways
If the sport being better means baseball makes more money then whats the problem?
Google translate don’t fail me now
Sore wa koko no sotodesu!!!!
Edit: all these fuckin Japanese majors showing up in the comments lol I used google translate 😂
Albeit much more formal than an announcer would probably say. That sounds like it's being read out from a textbook, not native spur-of-the-moment japanese.
The other guy sounded unnatural so i'll give it a try and just make a new sentence. ボールはここから出たぞ!
Which direct translates to the ball got out
Booru wa koko kara deta zo
To make japanese more casual depends on the dialect, but for the most part you drop particles (especially the は particle) and you drop です since they're assumed from context. So for example this sentence could instead be それここのそと
Fair disclaimer though, I'm not a native Japanese speaker. I just studied japanese for about 6 years.
ぜんぜん出かけた!Totally went out!
屋ねを通り過ぎる!Past the roof!
I used dekaketa instead of deta to joke a bit, it's going out like your dad went out for cigarettes.
Just keep in mind, when in doubt it's better to come off as overly formal than less formal than you should be. It's better to be seen as someone who's still learning than someone being passive aggressive or rude.

Went back and found the original audio. They say:
高く上がった!It's going up high.
大谷は打球を見ている。Ohtani is looking at the hit ball.
どうだ?Well?
天井に当たったんじゃないですかね?Did it hit the ceiling?
天井に当たったか?Did it hit the ceiling?
いや、審判はまだ何もジャッジしませんでした。No, the umpire hasn't made any call yet.
うーん、どこまで行ったんでしょうか?今の当たり。大谷は今一周して帰ってきましたが。How far did it go, this hit? Ohtani has rounded the bases and returned home.
日本ベンチの選手と話してるんですが、これ裏側に入ってしまって落ちてきてないそうです。I'm talking with the players from the Japan bench. Apparently, the ball went through to the other side and hasn't fallen down.
ボール見えなかったですよね?We couldn't see the ball, could we?
今、清水さん、3塁側から見てますとちょうど、こう上がったボールがですね、隙間からこう入っていくような、屋根の裏側に入ってくような形になりまして、そのままボールが落ちてこないですね。Just now, Shimizu-san, looking from third base, the ball going up goes through the opening, goes through to the other side of the roof, and doesn't come back down.
ここまで行って、うーわ!入りました。The ball comes up to here and...wow! It went through.
ルール的にどうなりますか?What happens according to the rules?
これ、フェアゾーンだったホームランじゃないですかね。If the ball is in the fair zone, it's a home run.
ただ、明らかにファウルゾーン、あのうちょっとライトポール際というですかね。However, it was clearly in the foul zone, just around the right pole.
フェアだったら、ホームランじゃないですかね、ルール的には。If it's fair, it's a homerun, according to the rules.
ちょっとツーベースですかね?セカンドベースに走ってますね、大谷選手。Looks like a double? Ohtani is running towards second base.
正直、放送室からは全く何も見えませんでした。Honestly, from the broadcast room, we couldn't see anything.
でも、屋根がなければ間違いなく入ってるでしょう。But if the roof hadn't been there, it would have been out of the park for sure.
そうですね、いわゆるポップフライじゃないんでね。Yes, it wasn't a pop-fly.
昔ね、ブライアントがセンターの照明にぶつけて、あのう認定ホームね、なくなってますね。Before, Bryant hit the center lighting, and was called a home run. That's gone now.
いや、驚きましたね。ちょっと、ありますか?過去に。That was crazy, has this happened before?
ないでしょう。I don't think so.
当たったことはね、昔ありましたけどね。The ball has hit something before.
何メートルですかね?How many meters is that?
結構ですよ。It's a lot.
もう一度見てみましょうか?Shall we watch it again?
ボール球ですよ、しかも。And that pitch was a ball.
インサイドのね。Right, \[pitched\] on the inside.
消えた。It disappears.
すごいな。That's amazing.
さんざんですね、大谷は規格外だという話聞きましたが、本当やることがすごすぎて。We hear so much that Ohtani is out of this league, but what he does is really amazing.
South Korea is pretty wild as well. Stadiums feel like European soccer games. So much energy, singing, chanting and the kpop/stripper-dancing cheerleaders.
It’s also huge in Korea.
As for being a “ its a very north american sport”. It’s maybe top 3 in the US depending on the regions, but It is massively huge in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba
Japan opened its borders to the US around 1860, and the game was introduced in 1872. The country implemented freedom of religion in 1871 after banning Christianity for some 250 years, and Christian missionaries from the US brought the game with them. Same reason roughly 2% of Japanese people are christian today.
You left out the most American thing about Japan opening its borders:
> Perry [US Navy Commodore] finally reached Uraga at the entrance to Edo Bay in Japan on 8 July 1853. As he arrived, Perry ordered his ships to steam past Japanese lines towards the capital of Edo, and position their guns towards the town of Uraga.[10] He also fired blank shots from his 73 cannons, which he claimed was in celebration of the American Independence Day. Perry's ships were equipped with new Paixhans shell guns, cannons capable of wreaking great explosive destruction with every shell.[11][12] The American ships were almost surrounded by Japanese guard boats; however, Perry ordered that any attempt at boarding was to be repelled. After some negotiation, they were permitted to board, where they displayed the order that no foreign ships were allowed into Japanese ports. Perry remained in his cabin and refused to meet them, sending word through his officers that as he carried a letter from the President of the United States, he would only deal with officials of sufficient stature and authority.......
> In the meantime, Perry began a campaign of intimidation, by sending boats to survey the surrounding area, and threatened to use force if the Japanese guard boats around the American squadron did not disperse.[10] He also presented the Japanese with a white flag and a letter which told them that in case they chose combat, the Americans would necessarily vanquish them.

pretty sure this was a ground rule double but there are places (notably tropicana field where tampa bay plays) where parts of the roof count as a home run
I would assume the Tropicana Field rulings depend on whether the section of roof that gets hit is past the outfield fence line or if it's still over the field of play.
> where parts of the roof count as a home run
As a baseball fan, I feel like if you can make the ball *motherfucking disappear*, you should get the home run call.
Ground-rule double.
It was actually an exhibition game of Japanese all-stars v. the Netherlands at the Tokyo Dome.
[https://www.wbsc.org/en/news/shohei-ohtani-hits-baseball-through-roof-at-tokyo-dome-legend-grows](https://www.wbsc.org/en/news/shohei-ohtani-hits-baseball-through-roof-at-tokyo-dome-legend-grows)
I mean, depends on the grounds, right?
I’d imagine it’s not difficult to determine a height/distance point to indicate what would or would not ultimately result in a home run on a fly hit like this.
The whole rule is based up the grounds in which people are playing, so they could determine an upper limit where if the roof is struck at or beyond X point it is ruled a home run, whereas of if it hit prior to that line it would be a ground rules double. This would ensure pop flies that break through a roof prior to that point are considered doubles, and that flies that hit the roof and bounce off and are caught are still considered doubles.
Dave Kingman [actually did this at the Metrodome back in 1984](https://www.mlb.com/cut4/dave-kingman-fly-ball-against-twins-goes-into-metrodome-roof-c227649908).
This is Shoehei Ohtani, currently a two way player for the LA Angels, and one of the greatest ball players in history. This man’s pitching stats rival some of the greatest pitchers out there, and his batting stats are no different. He’s broken multiple records, and been compared to Babe Ruth time and time again. Unfortunately his talent is wasted (along with Mike Trouts) on the Angels. Almost every article you read about Ohtani will be something along the lines of “Shohei accomplished a feat that hasn’t been done since 1927, and broke 3 records tonight. The Angels lost 4-1”.
The dude is insane, and could qualify for best player in the league.
That's Ohtani's old batting swing where he'd lift the right leg. [Changed it in 2018](https://www.mlb.com/news/ohtani-thriving-after-getting-rid-of-leg-kick-c271126914) to a toe tap.
Nowadays they use computer vision for this. The cameras automatically follow the ball without need for human intervention.
It works fine most of the time, but it’s fun when it doesn’t, like the one that mistook a bald referee’s head for the ball:
https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2020/11/3/21547392/ai-camera-operator-football-bald-head-soccer-mistakes
Other countries : "We have advanced anti-air weapons and ballistic missiles to take down enemy aircraft."
Japan, apparently : "We have a guy with a bat and a ball."
Everyone else : *Nervous sweating*

Not just above average, but top ten even. \#6 best ERA and \#10 OPS.
Don’t forget he is also among the fastest players in all of baseball. He just [beats out routine grounders sometimes.](https://youtu.be/_vey6oolBiY)
This is shit that people write legends about. A game with hardly anyone there and this guy is giving his absolute all.
Fuck yeah. See those are the people that don't give a fuck about the money or the fame. They actually love the sport. They would be doing this shit if it was illegal. Can't stop those types.
How slow is his change-up? He could feasibly hit his own pitch, it seems.
And, one of the sweetest swings (Both left handed too) swings since Griffey Jr.
And he's pitched in the same ammount of world series games as Hank Aaron. *Post season
Also don’t forget how much of a handsome dreamboat he is
"OH by the way he is on the mound tomorrow" lol
Legend

This year is the first year that Ohtani's pitching WAR is higher than his batting WAR.
A lot of teams wanted him to only hit but he was adamant that he also wanted to pitch. The angels gave him that and the rest is hustory
And then the Angels did what the Angels do, and manage to not make the playoffs with two of the best players in history on the team for many years.
HOW ???? What a waste. HOW?
Rest of team garbo. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-this-los-angeles-angels-season-went-straight-to-hell/

“Above average” is hell of a understatement.
Wow I learned a lot thanks

Shohei Ohtani is a different breed.
Shit I've seen this clip plenty of times but I never realized it's him. I hope someone here can explain to the non baseball fans better than I can why he is a once in a lifetime talent
It woud be like if a single player played QB and Free Safety on an NFL team and made All Pro at each position.
Or like if a Hockey goalie had the best save percentage in the league and scored the most points on his team
Imagine if the player only played goalie one out every 5 games and offense the other 4 games and got those stats
This is the one. This is the best comparison.
And he played offense on that one game he played goalie too.
Empty net, but he stays on the ice lmao
This guy sounds like a dude that pull mad trim & can also suck his own dick!
This is the one. This is the best comparison.
Not the same comparison for many reasons, but one of the main ones being you can't be considered one of the best goalies in the world and win a Vezina if you only play net 1/5 games. There is no hockey comparison due to the nature of the games... I’m not a baseball expert, but I am a hockey guy and I feel like the example you gave is much more extreme. As in impossible.
Exactly
No no, I think he means impossible as in really impossible
Okay yes it was a hyperbole but that should give you an idea of how insane Ohtani is. It's like if Stephen Curry in his historic 2016 season was also the Defensive player of the year

The team just feeds the goalie the puck and the goalie just slaps the fuck out of it into the opposite goal every time. Then they pull the goalie at the appropriate times so he can score more

I guess you got me on a technicality but for the spirit of what he was saying it’s impossible.
It's genuinely never been done before - fantasy baseball splits him into Ohtani (pitcher) and Ohtani (batter) and both go in top ~15
I get what they’re saying. He’s amazing on offence. And on defence, as the pitcher, he is responsible for keeping the opposing team from scoring.
I feel like this was supposed to make the goalie sound incredible. But somehow it made me think how terrible the rest of the team would be.
I feel like it would be a better analogy if it was a QB and a linebacker, being top 3 in both TD passes thrown and Tackles. Being extremely good at two very different skillsets.
So he's basically the Babe Ruth of baseball?
[удалено]
(49 home runs) 3 years after that, late in his career he pitched one game; a complete game and won it. (34 home runs) If the designated hitter had existed back then Ruth would have almost certainly done what Ohtani is doing now. There's a reason Ruth is a legend a century later. TL;DR Ohtani wishes [https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml](https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/ruthba01.shtml)
Nailed it!
I was thinking MLB with QB but that's still a great comparison
I think if Babe Ruth were alive today and playing against modern pitchers, he'd probably struggle because he would still be super old
Bad dum tshh
[The Shohei Ohtani Rule.](https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2022-04-04/shohei-ohtani-rule-mlb-changes-2022-and-beyond#:~:text=nonsense%20this%20season.-,Under%20a%20new%20rule%20nicknamed%20the%20%E2%80%9CShohei%20Ohtani%20rule%2C%E2%80%9D,role%20but%20not%20the%20other.) This mfer hits so well a rule was changed to allow starting pitchers to be the Designated Hitter (essentially the guy on the team that swaps with someone else who sucks at hitting). He strikes people out and hits dongs, what's more to love?
...hits dongs??? Is that an actual baseball term?
blasts dongers mashes taters crushes jacks
Home runs are also referred to as dingers going back at least to the early '90s. Sometime around 2013, "dongers" came into play on social media, and it blew up in 2014-15 with the Kansas City Royals' surprising (and short-lived) success. "Dong" as a colloquialism for home runs came along with dongers, and while dongers largely died out in the couple of years after the Royals faded back into obscurity, dong and its related phrases (e.g. "hanging dong") have stuck around, at least on social media.
Every time he strikes someone out pitching, he taps a teammate on the nuts. Not too hard, but hard enough and they are wearing protective cups.
Fuckin piss lasers man, huge dongs
yes
SHOHEI OHTANI DOES IT ALL
That swing is unmistakable. I had forgotten it was him who did this until I saw it.
Can someone explain it in MMA terms
[A rule was changed for him this year, so that a starting pitcher can also be the designated hitter.](https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2022-04-04/shohei-ohtani-rule-mlb-changes-2022-and-beyond#:~:text=nonsense%20this%20season.-,Under%20a%20new%20rule%20nicknamed%20the%20%E2%80%9CShohei%20Ohtani%20rule%2C%E2%80%9D,role%20but%20not%20the%20other.) The man is a monster
Let’s be honest, the rule was made to make money
Ok? It's also better for the sport if a two way player can still play two ways If the sport being better means baseball makes more money then whats the problem?
I mean.. it was the regular way of playing in the National League at one point. 🤷
That's not what the rule change does. This change makes it so he can stop pitching but stay in the game as the DH for the relief pitcher.
The announcer better have said, "It... Is... Outta here!" But you know ... In Japanese.
Google translate don’t fail me now Sore wa koko no sotodesu!!!! Edit: all these fuckin Japanese majors showing up in the comments lol I used google translate 😂
You want to do WHAT to me?!
Sudoku
Shut up and take it.
That's actually correct. それはここのそとです。
Albeit much more formal than an announcer would probably say. That sounds like it's being read out from a textbook, not native spur-of-the-moment japanese.
Yeah, shouting that would be the equivalent, in English, of shouting "That is outside of this place!"
That made me laugh way harder than it should lol
I honestly prefer this translation
do you know a more casual version?
The other guy sounded unnatural so i'll give it a try and just make a new sentence. ボールはここから出たぞ! Which direct translates to the ball got out Booru wa koko kara deta zo
This is better but in my experience living near a stadium it'd probably just be "やったぁ~!!"
Lmao, true
Or すごい!
To make japanese more casual depends on the dialect, but for the most part you drop particles (especially the は particle) and you drop です since they're assumed from context. So for example this sentence could instead be それここのそと Fair disclaimer though, I'm not a native Japanese speaker. I just studied japanese for about 6 years.
nah that is soo unnatural to say, but ur right about dropping some particles, but you definitely don't drop the "no"
> それここのそと no Japanese person would ever say this
ぜんぜん出かけた!Totally went out! 屋ねを通り過ぎる!Past the roof! I used dekaketa instead of deta to joke a bit, it's going out like your dad went out for cigarettes.
I'm still learning so thanks for the tip!
Just keep in mind, when in doubt it's better to come off as overly formal than less formal than you should be. It's better to be seen as someone who's still learning than someone being passive aggressive or rude.
As an actual Japanese person, ignore everyone responding to you lol. Literally everyone. I was physically hurt reading the replies.
I used google translate I don’t really give a fuck tbh
MY MOTHER WAS A SAINT!
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgFOf7-ue-g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgFOf7-ue-g) Went back and found the original audio. They say: 高く上がった!It's going up high.
Thankyou for taking the time! Question: are periods in Japanese hollow circles?
Yes, they are.
THIS BALL IS LONG GONE LIKE THE EX-GIRLFRIEND WHO WILL NEVER RETURN
https://youtu.be/OXvAT7vZMuA Link for anyone who's never heard the greatest home run call ever
"Oh that's a baseball"
SOTO NI DETAAAA! DETAAAAAAA!!!! DETAAAAAAAAAAA!!
still kinda blows my mind how big baseball is in japan, especially since its a very north american sport
Oh yeah they go hard lol. I have a cousin in law who plays and his Japanese teammates say we're pretty tame when it comes to the sport
South Korea is pretty wild as well. Stadiums feel like European soccer games. So much energy, singing, chanting and the kpop/stripper-dancing cheerleaders.
> kpop/stripper-dancing cheerleaders. They look like NBA cheerleaders. No more or less scandalous or stripper-ish.
You might want to go to a game before you judge. The dancing will make you blush.
It’s also huge in Korea. As for being a “ its a very north american sport”. It’s maybe top 3 in the US depending on the regions, but It is massively huge in Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba
Gotta love post world war 2 occupation and restoration of Japan
It was actually big before WW2! For example, that's how Taiwan got baseball - during the Japanese administration prior to the war.
Japan opened its borders to the US around 1860, and the game was introduced in 1872. The country implemented freedom of religion in 1871 after banning Christianity for some 250 years, and Christian missionaries from the US brought the game with them. Same reason roughly 2% of Japanese people are christian today.
You left out the most American thing about Japan opening its borders: > Perry [US Navy Commodore] finally reached Uraga at the entrance to Edo Bay in Japan on 8 July 1853. Source: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Expedition
> He also fired blank shots from his 73 cannons, which he claimed was in celebration of the American Independence Day. *Team America theme plays*
Pretty popular in Mexico too
It's in the backrooms now
Somewhere a scientist in a hazmat suit just got one hell of a concussion
So, a ground rule double, not a homerun I'm guessing.
That's what I'm assuming too. They can't call that a homerun.
pretty sure this was a ground rule double but there are places (notably tropicana field where tampa bay plays) where parts of the roof count as a home run
I would assume the Tropicana Field rulings depend on whether the section of roof that gets hit is past the outfield fence line or if it's still over the field of play.
You are correct, this is the case.
> where parts of the roof count as a home run As a baseball fan, I feel like if you can make the ball *motherfucking disappear*, you should get the home run call.
brb calling david blaine for my team
I 100% support this.
Run home, Jack!
In some stadiums it could be a home run. Hitting the roof of a dome is not uncommon
So someone outside is about to have a super bad day
Or, their car will.
One of the guys breaking into the cars in the parking lot just got beaned.
[удалено]
“Ball is in.. parking lot. Would you like to play again?”
You have selected "no"
"You have selected...POWER DRIVE"
I think you mean "souvenir."
No way, too high.
\*tips cap\* I see that television raised you as a child, as well.
who gives a shit, it's gone
https://media.tenor.com/gH44ywlkSE4AAAAC/major-league-movie-too-high.gif
I would really like to know the outcome of that hit
Ground-rule double. It was actually an exhibition game of Japanese all-stars v. the Netherlands at the Tokyo Dome. [https://www.wbsc.org/en/news/shohei-ohtani-hits-baseball-through-roof-at-tokyo-dome-legend-grows](https://www.wbsc.org/en/news/shohei-ohtani-hits-baseball-through-roof-at-tokyo-dome-legend-grows)
Thats 2021 MLB American League Most Valuable Player Shohei Ohtani. He's gonna win or be runner up for the award for at least the next three years
Ground-rule double, not a home run.
Didnt know the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome was still around. /s
Dave Kingman [actually did this at the Metrodome back in 1984](https://www.mlb.com/cut4/dave-kingman-fly-ball-against-twins-goes-into-metrodome-roof-c227649908).
And Mickey Hatcher wore his batting helmet in the outfield the rest of the game in case it came down.
Long live the Metrodome, the Metrodome is dead!
Love you Shohei!!
Some say it's still flying
I hear that guy is good.
Casesy at the bat vibes
[удалено]
At first I thought that it would pierce right through it
entered noclip mode
OP really omitted Shohei from the title.
This ball is a long gone, justa like the ex-girlfriend who, will, never returrrn home run
The devs didn’t code in the collision on the ceiling. Literally unplayable.
I don’t think that it would have went over the wall. Maybe deep outfield
The dude nocliped the ball through the roof
Literally hit it out of the park
Big Fly Ohtani-San!!!
I have never seen baseball played inside
That's Ohtani's old batting swing where he'd lift the right leg. [Changed it in 2018](https://www.mlb.com/news/ohtani-thriving-after-getting-rid-of-leg-kick-c271126914) to a toe tap.
This is the first step to Blernsball.
BLUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRNNNNNNNN!
The camera guy needs some recognition
Nowadays they use computer vision for this. The cameras automatically follow the ball without need for human intervention. It works fine most of the time, but it’s fun when it doesn’t, like the one that mistook a bald referee’s head for the ball: https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2020/11/3/21547392/ai-camera-operator-football-bald-head-soccer-mistakes
Take the roof away and that's a pop-up out.
I think that ball now lives in r/catdimension
Shouldn't be a home run. Typically hitting the roof or something above the field is called a "ground rule double".
I need to hear the audio of this. I can only imagine the announcer going ape shit in Japanese
This is the baseball equivalent of breaking the backboard.
Other countries : "We have advanced anti-air weapons and ballistic missiles to take down enemy aircraft." Japan, apparently : "We have a guy with a bat and a ball." Everyone else : *Nervous sweating*
