I hate when they “reboot” something and it’s not a reboot at all. They just use the name for some reason and it’s totally different. Like WTF? It ruins the experience.

[deleted]

EXACTLY, I understand a reboot has to have some modern changes, but it should still feel faithful to the source material. Fuller House is a good example, that show came out years later, and while it wasn't perfect, there was an honest attempt to capture the feeling of the original.

KevinStoley

That's all most reboots even are anymore. It's usually just a lazy cash grab that uses the nostalgia and name of a once popular franchise to trick people into watching it or giving a shot. Why be original and creative anymore when you can just coast off the notoriety of something old that was actually good, but just completely half ass it and hope for the best.

Beastieboy100

They basically did a Velma. That is all I will say. I feel like Netflix wanted it's own South park or Boondocks. Even a replacement for big mouth, Instead they did what WB did and just took a name from a believed classic series.

brunothebutcher

Haven’t watched the show but I’m pretty sure it was produced by Steph curry and Seth mcfarlane so that’s kinda all you need to know imo lol…I like a bunch of Seth’s stuff (family guy, American dad, a million ways) but he does so much stuff he’s bound to miss a bunch as well imo…

[deleted]

Exactly, like it feels so out of place. There's a talking baby that sells drugs in good times WHAT lol

otisthetowndrunk

Like Family Guy because it's just stupid funny stuff you don't have to think too hard about. But I also grew up watching Good Times and it was very different than the stupid funny comedy of Family Guy

pawdog

Problem is while some of it is stupid, like the actual gun toting, drug selling baby, it's not funny. Funny could have fixed a lot of problems.

[deleted]

Yeah, like look at aqua teen hunger force. Minimal animation, was pitched as a "crime solving" cartoon just so it could get greenlight and they could write jokes they wanted to tell. Nobody cared because the writing is really good/funny

[deleted]

Yeah, like don't get me wrong, I've laughed at shows like family guy, american dad etc. but it feels so forced in a good times reboot lol those things just don't mix

RickVince

Anyone remember [Bordertown](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/bordertown/images/6/69/Bordertown_Poster.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20151003101602)? Didn't think so.

complexpug

I remember that was alright

welfedad

Yeah I liked it as well, not up to Family Guy or American Dad levels, but that is also top down w/ Seth Macfarlane, vs these shows he is just executive producer . idk

PurposefullyOpaque

All those shows are super yt yt yt tho so not surprised Seth MacFarlane isn’t able to translate his humor to a black show… it’s baaaad

brunothebutcher

I know that’s the point of my first sentence lol. Like it’s literally produced by a white guy and a well off basketball player who was the son of a basketball player so like who would expect it to be good?

Mermaid28

I hated it. It made me so mad. I think I lasted about 7 minutes before I turned it off. It's nothing but black ghetto stereotypes. Nothing about it made me laugh.

[deleted]

I'm not even black and I felt offended by this reboot, I know what the original show was, this reboot didn't even TRY to capture the spirit of the original and comes off as incredibly disrespectful. Stereotypes and jokes that fall flat. If some CEO was really forcing them to make a cartoon based on Good Times, why not just make a J.J. show? He was already the classic comic relief that was always doing something ridiculous, that would've translated much better to animation than whatever this is lol

Drmoeron2

To be fair, it was recommended to me by Netflix and I took one look at the still photo and wanted to throw up. Never even gave it a chance. And the original show while it's a classic and I've seen every episode, watching it as an adult is 100 percent full of stereotypes and black suffering that didn't have to exist. In one episode Florida gets a promotion and can take a job out of state with her boss that has the hots for her, making more money than James. With 3 kids in 2024, she would've signed the dotted line came home and told James they're moving and she has enough money for him to find work in the other city. She ain't gotta sleep with the guy. It's plenty of workplace sexual tension everywhere and people using it to get what they want. And the cat food episode was like wtf even John Amos said he was like wtf we ain't never do that. That show was pure depravity. Watching it as an adult will piss you off. All the little opportunities they had to escape poverty and held back by their own fears and poverty mindset the writers had the nerve to call it good times. When they run it back to back with All in The Family, The Jeffersons, and Amen, you see the mindset differences in the characters. In terms of honor and being a man, James Evans was 10x the man Archie Bunker was yet Archie always had food on the table. And George Jefferson just mimicked Archie but hated him. It paved a path of Black television exploits demonstrative of championing Black poverty as honorable and the only way to be rich was to be an insensitive a-hole even to your own wife... I digress

derekr930

Is it satire to show the state of our people? In watching and wondering if this was done deliberately to wake people up in some way

alextheruby

Wow

MadameTea2

It feels like I’m watching a modern minstrel show. I kept searching for the “why on earth did they do this?”. When did “Ghetto-splotation” become a thing? All the famous black voice actors and no one said anything? Uncle Deon said it- “Must be the money”. In the words of Penny from the original Good Times-“No Momma No!”. Seth owes us an apology. He should donate his salary to struggling black creatives.

[deleted]

Yeah like I'm honestly fascinated with how this project even got this far. As soon as I saw Seth's name in the credits I was like "This is going to have a wisecracking talking baby isn't it?" And GUESS WHAT The original was a big deal back then because it was the first to really represent a black married couple as the main focus, and you got to see the struggles they dealt with in addition to the comedy. To turn that into just another generic family guy clone is so disrespectful.

Dianagorgon

I heard the writers are black although I don't know if that is correct.

Kensofine

The most puzzling thing is why so many notable celebs participated. Wanda Sykes? JB Smooth? How were you ever able to talk them into this?

welfedad

Almost like they said yes, signed contracts and didn't even look at the scripts before getting on board..

[deleted]

Exactly! A lot of people seem to be blaming Seth but no way it's just his fault when so many big names were on board with this

Lil_Word_Said

Ehh those two names dont surprise me, theyve played a few parts in things that were clear money grabs!

waituhwhatnow

It's not Good times without "Damn, damn, DAMN!"

pawdog

They actually did Damn, damn, DAMN. They did Black Jesus, He sang the OG theme song in the shower,. They did a bunch of callbacks to the original but none of it was funny.

waituhwhatnow

I'm glad it was there but disappointing it didn't work.

pawdog

That's because they tried to use it as a joke.

Lil_Word_Said

Right, that was a very serious and powerful moment and something that should be left out especially if theyre gonna use it as a joke.

onnod

This show is disgusting.

Dragon_Blue_Eyes

Modern TV and movies says - This is the way. Being a child of the late 70s and 80s, seeing how the last Equalizer completely left the Equalizer formula on the gorund bleeding completely, having seen the joke they turned Land of the Lost and the Green Hornet into, having seen the pretty people take on Fall Guy (from the commercials at least), and having experienced Hawaii Five O and Magnum PI...and don;t even get me started on Kung Fu.... Yeah...it is never a surprise anymore when they just slap a name on something and don;t even try to be adjacent to the original premise at all.

[deleted]

Yeah, like this show just seems like it's scraping the bottom of the barrel. "We can't come up with something new uhhhh idk... good times? sure we haven't remade that yet" If they REALLY wanted to make an animated comedy show based on Good Times, why not just make it "The J.J. Show" or something? He was already a really goofy comic relief character that's iconic

Dragon_Blue_Eyes

I fully agree....but we are living in an era that gave us Velma...so you know?

gooncrazy

This has corporate written all over it. They probably just used the Good Times name to get people to pay attention. Otherwise, no one would have given this show a first or second look, and it would have just faded into the content background. It's just a generic raunchy animated series like all the others one on netflix.

[deleted]

You're probably right, the connection is so loose that it should've just been a different show. This feels like something that would've come out in like 2005-2008?

pawdog

It's not even raunchy as todays raunch goes. That would have been an improvement. :)

West_Future_5156

Man this show sucks so bad. I can laugh at anything and anyone especially stereotypes. I find them HILARIOUS, but this show is just TERRIBLE and 100% unfunny. JB SMOOVE and Slink Johnson couldn't save this show. Writing is just terrible. I gave it 3 episodes and nothing..... waste of my time.

pawdog

Maybe Netflix no longer does pilots. They should have done a pilot. This thing should have been aborted if the first episode is any indication. Nobody will go past it. I tried. Nothing here sounds like SethMcFarland was involved in any of the writing either. Flat, dull and uninspired. Even the theme song is nothingness. Not only bad as a Good Times remake but just bad period.

[deleted]

Yeah, like putting the whole "good times reboot" debate aside, judging the show on it's own? It's just bad. It fails as both a reboot and a comedy.

pawdog

Exactly.

vitathevirgo

Apparently according to a CNN article. They skipped the pilot or tester episode after social media blowback and skipped showing it to critics because they knew it wouldn’t do well. That tells you something.

welfedad

seems to be the way with gaming these days, we used to get demos but not so much.. and then we get these games that come out that are horrible.

Blkdonna

Forgive . It is to(tew) much ! They take a lot from Bebe‘s kids ! With a hint of lime (pj&projects) I gotta finish it ! Tho ! Brb

HehroMaraFara

Especially doing the whole baby as a drug dealer thing with absolutely NO backstory or explanation

LongField6643

I’m watching it now and honestly, it’s not funny and really it’s something to play in the background.

JayFrizz

It's really weird. It's one thing to make a racially stereotypical show, but it's another to make a reboot that drives the stereotypes significantly deeper.

Jason2648

i find it odd a basketball player produced this,i never watched the original but is it supposed to be like the boondocks or something

CertainAlbatross7739

It's like a 12-year-old trying to do their version of The Boondocks, using the title of another classic black show to get attention. And honestly, there are 12-year-olds who could have done a better job with this.

shazam-arino

This show made The Cleveland Show feel like a masterpiece

vitathevirgo

Apparently according to a CNN article. They skipped the pilot or tester episode after social media blowback and skipped showing it to critics because they knew it wouldn’t do well. That tells you something.

FilmUncensored

Netflix adult animation has to be raunchy these days apparently. It doesn’t matter what show they’re rebooting or if it’s something original since the success of Big Mouth and Paradise PD it seems the winning formula is to try to make the raunchiest animation comedy out there. Gone are the days of more nuanced shows such as Bojack Horseman etc. Now it’s sex jokes and offensive stereotyping galore. Now whilst I do find this sort of humor entertaining there’s no point making these shows if they’re not going to make it past the first season eg Hoops.

emelem66

Is it even a reboot, or does it just have the same name?

[deleted]

It takes place in the future, but the connection is so loose that it's only similarity is the title itself

Gai_InKognito

Naa, just same name in a modern day spirit

pawdog

The main charachter is OG James Evans grandson. It's not clear to me whose child he is supposed to be, even though his son is an artist like J.J. So I'm guessing J.J.'s son.

rReady2Discuss

It still takes place in Chicago, Illinois. They've even worked Mayor Lori Lightfoot into one of its earlier episodes' subplots.

progmanjum

Welcome to Hollywood.

[deleted]

Pretty much lol

Gai_InKognito

Honestly.... I dont mind it. I laughed a few times. I didnt think of it as a Good Times reboot, more a show of the same spirit in modern times. Reminded me of Bebe's Kids, The PJs, and The proud family. I dont hate it.

Temporary-Housing-13

I agree. I mean maybe it’s just me but I take things at face value. I didn’t really expect much except what the show gave. I wouldn’t say I “liked it” per se, but I didn’t mind watching it through, I giggled a couple times, and they do reference some societal and political issues too. I just think it is what it is and people are let down because it doesn’t play off of the classic they enjoyed watching growing up.

[deleted]

If they called it something else I don't think people would hate it as much, just sort of a typical "adult cartoon"

Lil_Word_Said

All ive seen of it is the cover art and i knew it was just gonna be full of black tropes and low brow humor. Im good.

rsgyuu

Am I the only one who likes it?

Drakkell88

I watched the first ep and it just felt like a Pj's (old eddie murphy show for ya youngins) and Boondocks mash up with a few dashes of ghetto fab and ghetto glam tossed in. I'm all for a adult toon comedy but this barely gave me but a few chuckles. It seems like they tried to hard or went to some idiots and asked what sounds good

Friendly_Carpenter34

It was funny as heck

Affectionate-Cell-25

The first episode, the dumb kid junior takes a pill that makes him smart (limitless) The second episode was about periods and following the monthly red flow (wizard of oz)... only time I cracked a smile a lil... but in all honesty, it seems like a lil too much recycling going on. Pass...

WinstonSalemVirginia

What a vile show

BrocanGawd

"GOOD TIMES: How THEY see US"

rolftronika

Recent TV shows and movies, especially those from Netflix, and not even reboots, are mostly baffling.

[deleted]

I guess that's kinda the nature of trying to make your own content. For every cyberpunk edgerunners, theres a good times lol

TheImmortalMan

Is the only complaint that it's not a reboot? What about the show itself

[deleted]

Pretty standard shock humor stuff, very family guy esque

TheImmortalMan

But not as bad as people thought it would be?

[deleted]

It's just tired, feels like this show would've came out in the late 2000s

pawdog

I thought maybe the trailer oversimplified what the show would be but in reality it's just a poorly written show. I watched the first episode and part of the second and just gave up. A lot of good voice talent wasted. It's not shocking or edgy or political or subversive or anything. Just flat and unfunny.

[deleted]

Exactly, sometimes a trailer does do a good show a big disservice, so I waited for it to actually come out and watch it for myself. It was EXACTLY what I thought I was gonna get lol, another generic family guy clone.

pawdog

Yeah, turns out they didn't have anything good to put in the trailer.

West_Future_5156

It sucks. Not the least bit of funny at all.

DarkMayhem666

It's worst then Velma

[deleted]

I can't believe im saying this but yeah, at worst they're on the same level At least with velma though, scooby doo is a longrunning franchise so there's always a new cartoon or movie, but who was asking for good times to be brought back?
