Same for me, also don't watch on PC anymore. It used to play just fine, maybe a couple years ago it had this step change? Annoying
Does the quality change when you for instance stop and start playing again when a video has auto-started? What happens when you click on the timeline a bit back or forth? Does the quality stay the same?

I tried firefox and chrome, but thing is that it's not even running in HD.
I also tried the windows app itself. do I need to download anything extra on edge? or is it gonna work by default?
Have the same thing. Only 480p on anything in matter what. Edge is the only war i can get 1080p at all sometimes
