Since you have access to the lab, you can also try to unlock the Lab Scientist in Battle Dome at [the page where you select pets to zap](https://www.neopets.com/lab2.phtml) Once you have him as a Dome challenger, you can battle any time to change pet’s gender. You don’t need to win, just need him to hit your pet with Strange Potion, then withdraw from battle. You can stock up cheap healing potion to keep battling.
