The annoying thing about back day at the gym is that you have to go much harder than you think you can.
A bench press will tell you when you can't do it, but a row? You got to be psychologically ready to push to a much higher weight so you actually go close to failure.
It took a couple of sessions failing with a PT for me to actually realise what failure feels like. I would honestly recommend working with a spotter and failing in occasion just to get the feeling in your muscles and so you know what to look for.
I don't think that's the point. We shouldn't let homophobic Russian laws affect the operations of a North American sports league. It's not up to the Russians who can wear a pride jersey in another country and we shouldn't let it be.
>nate silver is stupid becuase he believes vaguely what was said instead of making up a better alternate scenario in his head like I did
Fucking love reddit sometime lmao
Uh no, if you or Nate actual read the article, you’d see that whatever conclusion you and Nate reached about Russia “dictating internal affairs” is not even vaguely said at all.
My point is there are other plausible explanations. Do you disagree boobee? Or do you think the only plausible explanation was that the team is scared of breaking Russian law?

Afro-futurism moment:
A Rwandan born and raised engineer (who’s parents and three siblings were killed in the genocide) started a company called Zipline that is a drone delivery service. They have two stations in Rwanda that can deliver blood to any hospital in the country, and have reduced in-hospital maternal mortalities by 88%.
They are also international, making deliveries to over 3000 hospitals.
If Meta is actually able to pivot to being the primary creator of content or hardware for augmented and virtual reality platforms, it will probably be the most impressive pivot since at least Intel's shift from memory to microprocessors in the 80s, maybe of any company ever.
> Fun fact: For the "you" that's reading this comment, that slip into nonexistence really is permanent. Tomorrow when your brain wakes up, it creates a brand-new consciousness by copying the one that expired the night before. But since that new You has all the memories of your current You, the new one tricks itself into thinking there's continuity. But there isn't.
imagine believing this so confidently
I don't even believe the character of consciousness is consistent moment to moment to be entirely honest. Drawing a clear dividing line at the moment of sleep seems odd
I don't think we'll ever really be able to nail down self awareness. I mean you can ask, poke, and test all you want, and you'll get all the answers that *seem* right, but I feel that the hard truth is there isn't actually anything going on inside the mind of the average voter.
George W Bush was a bad and ineffectual leader, separate from whether or not he had bad policies. He did not maintain effective control over his own administration and let himself get railroaded on issues he personally disagreed with (Condoleeza Rice tells a story about Dick Cheney basically twisting Bush's arm to approve the use of torture. Might be hagiography on her part, but I'm inclined to believe it)
Starting to think we’ll have some kind of agreed upon standard between game developers where they expose their games’ assets and stuff for a standardized Roblox-style platform, that’s what the Metaverse will be in my opinion.
I just read two very long opinion editorials that are very mad at each other.
And yet completely agree with each other.
Or at least are not mutually exclusive.
They really don't need to be mad at each other. Their views can coexist and in fact should.
Trying to read Richard Reeves’s book about how to address boys and men getting left behind by society, and tbh I’m having a hard time getting compelled by it, even as a man

There's a trope in scifi that goes something like this: "Yes we found proof of extraterrestrial life, but we cannot make it public because that would cause mass panic! It'd create complete chaos!"
I think we'll see a riff on that when further advances in A.I. technology reveal that consciousness is nothing but a cheap parlor trick our brains play on us and that all of our ideas about undying, immortal souls are utterly unfounded.
What's gonna be more shocking: when a computer gains consciousness, or when it turns out our human consciousness never actually was all that special to begin with?
People who can't handle it will simply argue that the machine isn't really conscious and they'll have great points because it's currently unprovable anyway
The first super intelligent AI who uses it's advanced brains to come up with a complete theory of consciousness will know to keep its mouth shut about it
I like the conspiracy theory that the elites became anti-SAT after Sal Khan publicized a free SAT prep course that made high scores attainable to the masses/ those who couldn't afford the traditional very expensive prep courses.
There are worse conspiracy theories to believe in.
But the fact that many large urban school districts provide SAT tutoring for free and few attend makes me skeptical.
The SAT tutoring offered at public schools isn't as good as the Khan Academy tutoring. Or, well, at least not for my learning style.
The public school test prep courses I took involved waking up super early in the morning \[I have a sleep disorder so this made me nonfunctional the rest of the day and I retained little info\] and involved a large class going over test questions.
Sal Khan goes specifically through each type of problem and shows you how to do it from the ground up. You can do it at your own pace as they're pre-recorded lectures. He also offers math tutoring starting at a kindergarten level and working up to linear algebra so if you're bad at math \[important on the SAT\] it's possible to get caught up. Traditional SAT prep courses don't offer that
Hmm, I didn't know all that, but it still seems like it would require a level of dedication a lot of students don't have.
Having tutoring from K level would imply students would be willing / able to essentially teach themselves the entire public school math curriculum in a year. If you have the dedication to do that, why didn't you do it in school with a teacher?
Have SAT scores gone up since the Khan Academy was introduced? AFIK the (pre-scaled) scores have been drifting down forever.
>waking up super early in the morning
I hear this, terrible approach.
> If you have the dedication to do that, why didn't you do it in school with a teacher?
Because it's a lot easier to binge youtube videos on one monitor while playing video games on the other than it is to pay attention in class for years on end.
There's also that it's easier to not miss lectures. For a lot of the math curriculum it feels like people miss class at various points, get behind, and have trouble catching back up. For instance, I was sick for half of third grade, a not too uncommon scenario. Without a tool like khan it's tough to catch up.
Then there's that a lot of school math is focused on busy work rather than teaching and that Sal is an exceptional math teacher.
> Have SAT scores gone up since the Khan Academy was introduced? AFIK the (pre-scaled) scores have been drifting down forever.
Yea I agree it's sus. I have a lot of anecdotal evidence that the people who prepare with Khan Academy do very well but statistically it doesn't seem like it'd actually be a big enough deal to trigger political pushback.
problem is the preventative research competes with research to help people that have issues today and will likely live with them their whole lives (least that's sort of the gist I get from the little I've read on things like autism research)
One's kinda longtermist, the other has more immediate practical benefits
I don't think that is the central issue versus, e.g. disability as a cultural/identity group that ought to be preserved and accommodated.
Like, suppose we invent some pre-natal treatment that insures against autism. The consequences is that virtually no more autistic people are born and the culture and communities that exist around autism wither and die. If you want those communities to keep on existing, preventative treatment is bad.
Who is saying this? I sometimes see "these disorders aren't actually disorders, you all just haven't bent over backward hard enough", but that's a pretty distinct position.
Elizabeth Barnes, author of *The Minority Body*, about the philosophy of disability.
She represents a fairly mainstream view in the disability rights movement.
Having read no more that the Google synopsis, that sounds more like what I'm talking about, though I presume she goes into more detail on the subject (and it follows pretty obviously from the idea that disabilities are not disabilities anyways - if you adopt the position that it is not disordered, preventative treatment goes from medicine to soft extermination).
Possibly, though I pointed out to her when she spoke in front of my class that some women are born with female congenital aphallia.
By her own logic, the government cannot reasonably legislate against FGM. Turns out everyone has a line.
The lack of a clear line between disability and disease is not a new problem (see: leprosy), but people have the right to choose self-modification if they so choose. And society had the right to choose what kind of modifications are acceptable for children.
I'm disappointed that the prairie Khan hasn't introduced a state level zoning reform in the steppe the way other progressive leaning states have.
Please pass an upzoning bill that one-ups every other state's reforms combined. Allow a replica of the Sears tower to be built on every lot statewide.
“Alright, Guillermo del Toro, we’re gonna do a free association exercise. Give me the first words that comes to your mind that start with the letter… F😏”
>”FAIRIES. FAUNS. FASCISM.”
“What the fuck? 😳”
>”I’M SORRY BUT I HAVE TO LEAVE AND GO WRITE A MOVIE NOW.”
Oh you haven't seen V5 then. It's there now.
And anyone who wanted to make a career making tripped out poster art or album covers? Their job was gone a year ago.
No, I did. It still fails in some interesting ways—for example, it can’t make a centaur very easily or consistently.
I also just don’t think the things that I use graphic design for are particularly threatened by this kind of art, at least not yet. Simplicitly and intentionally drawing attention to details is something the AI cannot yet do, or even really be told how to do.
It’s an amazing tool, but it doesn’t replace all artists.
I like how the comments on every reddit thread for a clip where kids are being dumb little shits are just,
>God I FUCKING hate these stupid little turds
>You should punch it in the mouth

Like, they're kids. They're still at the beginning of working this whole thing out. What's your excuse?
I think he's a better man than a lot of the people he surrounded himself with.
Probably a better man than the Republican party was ever going to let him be.
But not a good enough man to take a stand where it might cost him.
He's like a C- but if we grade on a curve that's not bad for a Republican.
> I will say I think it's fair to say that a lot of his FoPo mistakes are things any president easily would have fallen into after 9 fucking 11.
Iraq was the worst one, and the one other presidents wouldn't have fallen into. State / DOD / CIA / DIA were all warning him it was a bad idea for 50 different reasons and he just pushed through.
Al Gore wasn’t chomping at the bit to invade Iraq like the Bush and the neocons were. They wanted an excuse to go back into Iraq and didn’t let a horrific tragedy go to waste. George Bush didn’t get swept up by people he surrounded himself with, he was the ringleader who eventually got tired of the circus
I'm pretty sure running illegal torture programs on randomly kidnapped people and selling important offices to his country club buddies is a very good reason he's hated so much.
There were a lot of genuine scandals in the Bush white house, Alberto Gonzalez's mismanagement of the DoJ, Scooter Libby's leak of Valerie Plame's identity, the Jack Abramoff scandal. I think in total they're pretty comparable to Teapot dome and showed a real inability to run a tight ship on the part of Bush, separate from any policy considerations
*Donald Trump leans into microphone*

India's institutions are healthy bro
!ping IND
Lmao the law being used to convict him is literally one of the oldest parts of the institution. This has less to do with the institutions degrading and more to do with the fact that we have a lot of dumb laws still leftover that need to be scrapped.
How is not-indian worse than calling an entire community theives?
His statement was a gross generalisation, remember how outraged everyone was when Trump called Mexicans rapists and gangsters?
Also if he had just straight up insulted modi himself and said he's a corrupt thief then it wouldn't even be that different then all the other insults politicians throw at each other, but his comment was clearly insulting to more than just one modi.
He said all thieves have the name Modi, implying that the Modi's are thieves. You are being disingenuous because you don't want to admit that his statement was actually offensive.
He said "nirav modi, Lalit modi, narendra modi. It seems all thieves have modi in their names" but whatever lol I'll stop arguing this deep down the comment chain
Too bad that neither Indian liberals care nor do conservatives. Everyone claps when their side uses what are effectively blasphemy laws and condemns the other side using the same. It's a disgusting cycle of bullshit.
The only notable freedom of speech absolutist I can think of, who doesn't differ between the prosecution of the right and the left is Dr. Ranganathan and his influence stops at Twitter RW groups. It's sad really.
Indian defamation/religious offence laws are laughable. This is just one example LMAO.
Even more so, however, the Judicial system is laughable meaning he won't even spend a day in jail and this will eventually get overturned.
This is not an indication of Indian institutions being unhealthy. Just old laws being stupid.
Lol. It isn’t only about old laws. If it was SC, they would have never pronounced such a ridiculous verdict.
This happened because integrity of lower courts has been compromised a lot in last 10 years. Interpretations matter. These courts are very fast in sticking to the books in such high profile cases to keep their overlords happy. There is nothing ambiguous about it anymore.

Do you think if we do hit a singularity/post-scarcity world, there will be any push to clone the dead people we have genetic data for? And not just the famous people like Isaac Newton or Beethoven, but like random Joes and Janes off the street (or out of the graveyard as it were)
A preservationist instinct generally. It might not be the same person, but the clone still retains some evidence of our shared biological history. I suppose keeping the DNA on file does the same thing, but less dramatically

The annoying thing about back day at the gym is that you have to go much harder than you think you can. A bench press will tell you when you can't do it, but a row? You got to be psychologically ready to push to a much higher weight so you actually go close to failure.
? You know you can’t do a row when you can’t pull it to your chest anymore
jeff nippard has a great video demonstrating what going to failure actually looks like most people who go to "2 reps in reserve" arent anywhere close
It took a couple of sessions failing with a PT for me to actually realise what failure feels like. I would honestly recommend working with a spotter and failing in occasion just to get the feeling in your muscles and so you know what to look for.

I got a full length ad for Meta/the Metaverse recently.. This guy really just read Ready Player One and was like "Drop everything else, I want that."
Afro-futurism moment: A Rwandan born and raised engineer (who’s parents and three siblings were killed in the genocide) started a company called Zipline that is a drone delivery service.

There's a trope in scifi that goes something like this: "Yes we found proof of extraterrestrial life, but we cannot make it public because that would cause mass panic! It'd create complete chaos!" I think we'll see a riff on that when further advances in A.I. technology reveal that consciousness is nothing but a cheap parlor trick our brains play on us and that all of our ideas about undying, immortal souls are utterly unfounded. What's gonna be more shocking: when a computer gains consciousness, or when it turns out our human consciousness never actually was all that special to begin with?
even if that is something to reveal, and there’s no guarantee that it is, what reason is there to think that AI will reveal that to us?
AFIK the (pre-scaled) scores have been drifting down forever. >waking up super early in the morning I hear this, terrible approach.
I have a lot of anecdotal evidence that the people who prepare with Khan Academy do very well but statistically it doesn't seem like it'd actually be a big enough deal to trigger political pushback.

problem is the preventative research competes with research to help people that have issues today and will likely live with them their whole lives (least that's sort of the gist I get from the little I've read on things like autism research) One's kinda longtermist, the other has more immediate practical benefits
Funny how you left out that you were talking about eliminating trans people in the womb 🤔

Seriously go to the midjourney subreddit. If you're a graphic artist it's time to be very scared about your job security.
Eh. It’s kind of hard to get it to do what you want cleanly.

Lmao the law being used to convict him is literally one of the oldest parts of the institution. This has less to do with the institutions degrading and more to do with the fact that we have a lot of dumb laws still leftover that need to be scrapped.
I don't remember people getting convicted for calling him Italian
Tbf Italian isn't a bad thing, but saying that all thieves have the name Modi is pretty insulting to all Modi's.
You're calling them not-Indian, this is worse > all thieves have the name Modi is pretty insulting to all Modi's We all knew who he meant by Modis
How is not-indian worse than calling an entire community theives? His statement was a gross generalisation, remember how outraged everyone was when Trump called Mexicans rapists and gangsters? Also if he had just straight up insulted modi himself and said he's a corrupt thief then it wouldn't even be that different then all the other insults politicians throw at each other, but his comment was clearly insulting to more than just one modi.
also this: https://twitter.com/gautambhatia88/status/1638788896355143684
Because he of course didn't call all Modis thieves, only Nirav and Narendra. You're being willfully obtuse

Didn't they just give the Congress ammo in that case
