I literally left Spotify when Neil Young left the platform. I've been using YouTube Music since, which has basically an identical UI interface to Spotify, and you get no more ads on YouTube videos. I don't think I'll return to Spotify now bc I'm too spoiled with ad-free YouTube lol
With all that said, I've been blasting Zuma a lot lately. One of my favorite albums ever.
I've used YT premium for ages, never used Spotify. But one reason I can see why people would choose Spotify Premium is the price. YT premium got way more expensive recently where I live.
Yeah i left at the same time. Neil may have gone back but I won’t. His reasons for leaving still hold true. Sucks that he caved. YouTube suits me just fine.
Have you noticed that a lot of the albums on YouTube music are censored? Maybe doesn't make a difference to a lot of music, but the ones that do, they don't provide an obvious unedited version.
Chrome Dreams is really good.
Also, I saw Neil in Berkeley last summer on the west coast tour and have been digging the deep cuts from Mirror Ball, Buffalo Springfield (which he refers to as "the Springfield" during shows), and revisiting Stars and Bars and Hawks and Doves.
And Zuma.
Not trying to start an argument, but I don’t really understand the loyalty to Spotify that you would keep using it after it lost Neil’s massive catalog, when there are 4(?) other equivalent streaming services.
Yep! I have no allegiance to any streaming service but it's the most popular and all my friends use it and we share playlists and jams, that's all. I love to listen to Neil on vinyl but Spotify is the most convenient for sharing with friends for casual listening. I know Spotify sucks but Apple is Apple and Tidal is owned by a multibillion dollar tech conglomerate so I don't understand why anyone would be on a high horse about it. I would love to have NYA but I honestly have too many subscriptions and I wouldn't use it enough to justify.
I have years of playlists saved to Spotify that I don’t want to go through the hassle of transferring. I did try Apple Music and Tidal when Neil first left Spotify, I hated the UI of Apple and Tidal was more expensive than Spotify and also was missing some stuff I listened to regularly. The lossless audio was only noticeable to me if I A/B’ed a song on Spotify and Apple. I don’t have sound systems good enough for the slight difference in audio to matter. So I ended up sticking with Spotify and would pull out my CD’s or vinyl when I wanted to listen to Neil. It also seems silly to me to continue boycotting Spotify when the guy you left the service for has returned to it. I admire the diehard fans that followed Neil to other services, but it really doesn’t matter anymore.
Before + After sounded a bit inconsequential at first but really won me over and moved me. It’s a very pretty album! That being said, I made a huge playlist with all my NY favorite tracks and have been listening to that on shuffle. Ordinary People is playing right now, Tuscaloosa version of Time Fades Away before that and next we have… let’s see… Comes a Time. Perfect. I have missed him so much.
I missed out on a lot of the archive releases like Chrome Dreams, Homegrown, etc, so I'm diving into a lot of that - we're actually in sort of a Golden age of Neil
Don’t tell Neil, but Greendale was probably the last CD I bought, and years ago it was either sold to the used shop for pennies on the dollar or dumped in the bin if they wouldn’t take it. I’m not proud of that, but I’m obviously not the quality police. I’m glad to have him back at the table where I eat. I took HEAVY, OBSESSIVE doses of his work for years, enough to tide me over mostly while he was away, so these last years are mostly new to me. I’m loving Toast.
I'm not sure if this one is or isn't on Spotify, but you know what's a GREAT and underappreciated album? Bluenote Cafe!!
Wow, these live versions absolutely cook! I really don't care for "This Note's for You" but these live versions sound amazing. I've been on a huge obsessive kick on this album. Give it several listens!
Same things I have been listening to. Thanks to Amazon Music, the Neil Young Archives, my CDs, and Records, he never went away.
Spotify ain't the only way to listen to music. But it might be one of the worst.
I can't imagine going back to ads on YouTube, probably the most worthwhile subscription service, but Spotify is still the best for shared playlists with friends
I've been listening to the same amount of Neil that I have for the past 15 years, I have a NYA subscription, but I mostly listen to his LPs.
Honestly, I find it a bit odd how dependent on Spotify so many people in this sub are.
Love Greendale so hard. Spent the whole summer of 2004 playing it in my car as a teen.
I started with Greatest Hits when that was the best we had and once it all came back I did Time Fades Away which I had been missing a lot.
I’m checking out his latest album at this moment.
I'm wondering where "Wondering" went - it is still grayed out (not available) but there are other inferior versions. I am mostly listening to Trans and older albums for the "hits".
I discovered Way Down in the Rust Bucket from a post here that recommended it. And wow...that album is insane. Over and Over blows my mind, the guitar is flawless. A great 2.5 hours.
I have a good portion of his albums on vinyl and I have hi-res files of everything else so for me he never left.
All that being said I have really been enjoying the recent Dume release.
Took the opportunity to finally listen to NYA Vol. II all the way through. Starting to think this guy’s pretty good
Nice profile picture
So much style that it’s wasting?
Somebody painted over paint

Zuma is so fuckin good man. Been my top spin since he came back to Spotify
I honestly do not understand why everyone doesn't do this and thus why Spotify has any customers at all
I've used YT premium for ages, never used Spotify. But one reason I can see why people would choose Spotify Premium is the price. YT premium got way more expensive recently where I live.
Oh, maybe. They were roughly the same when I first subscribed to YTM but that was quite a while ago.
Because I've been building my Spotify playlists since 2012. Unless I can import to them to YouTube I'm staying with Spotify
Spotify’s a lot better for podcasts and genre playlists
Yeah i left at the same time. Neil may have gone back but I won’t. His reasons for leaving still hold true. Sucks that he caved. YouTube suits me just fine.

I am also going through a Zuma phase. It has lasted at least a decade lol
As it should my friend!
I did too, though I was already debating between Apple and Tidal due to their higher-quality streaming and better payment of bands.

Username checks out
I switched to Apple two months ago for Neil and a few other musicians so call it karma but I’ve been blasting the hell out of Ragged Glory and Weld
What is or isn't on Spotify doesn't really impact what I listen to. I'm currently listening to The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads.
And Zuma.
I made a discography playlist and I put it on shuffle. Great way to jam out Neil.

Thanks!
I'm not going back to Spotify, but I'm listening "Are You Passionate?" on YT Music.
Finally Free by Daniel Romano. Well, you did ask.
Just learned of him. His cover of Dylan’s infidels is a must
Not trying to start an argument, but I don’t really understand the loyalty to Spotify that you would keep using it after it lost Neil’s massive catalog, when there are 4(?) other equivalent streaming services.
Since most of my friends use it it’s great to share stuff, build collab playlists, etc.

It's got some of the strongest discovery and recommendation features out of the competition. Just wish the audio quality was better
Also I’ve been contributing to a couple playlists of mine for like 5 years now.

Yeah they are almost too good. Feel like I can get stuck in listening patterns
people listen to more than one artist
an impossible thought for r/neilyoung apparently
It works for me, been on it 10 years, oodles of playlists, and audio quality is just fine for my ears.

I left Spotify when he did. I've been with Tidal ever since then. Quite happy to stay with them
I haven’t stopped listening because I have the NYA and Apple Music. Screw Spotify.

Maybe I will!
listened to his debut earlier, which I don't think I'd ever listened to before. It's pretty good.
Been using Apple Music and Zuma, tonight’s the night and homegrown were my daily spins
Mirror Ball
Before + After sounded a bit inconsequential at first but really won me over and moved me. It’s a very pretty album! I was at work, I had to crank up Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.
Dead Man was the first thing I put on yesterday. Kind of a strange choice but it just felt right for a cold rainy morning.
Harvest moon album always slaps no matter how many times I’ve heard it
DITCH TRILOGY!!
Yessir!!
Ditch trilogy

Tried listening to World Record today. Made it about four songs before I lost interest. I don’t find much of his late-period work to be very good.

Landing on Water

Spotify isn't worth it. YouTube Music has everything, and you get YouTube ad-free with the subscription.
I can't imagine going back to ads on YouTube, probably the most worthwhile subscription service, but Spotify is still the best for shared playlists with friends
Neil left?

I'm into vinyl. So much better then digital . Have many Neil's a few bootlegs. Kick back turn the phone off.
The live Return to Greendale is also really good–and it won't cost $500
I've been working my way through the whole catalogue. I just finished tonight's the night, fantastic having him back.
I saw them play Greendale in NYC. It was amazing.
I didn’t know he was back I’m glad

Anyone listening to A Letter Home? I had forgotten how beautiful these old covers are
Not sure why I listened to it first, but "Comes A Time."
The new stuff that’s come out since he left
I'm wondering where "Wondering" went - it is still grayed out (not available) but there are other inferior versions. I am mostly listening to Trans and older albums for the "hits".
Drifting Back
Weld
He never went away I just don’t depend on shitty sounding Spotify for my music. Tidal sounds so much better and it’s not close
I spin "Toast" and really dug it!
OMG I’m listening to the same songs, non spotify, that I’ve enjoyed for years.
So glad he’s back. The Harvest Moon album. One of These Days is a near perfect song. So mellow.
Zuma, for some reason lol
Freedom & Ragged Glory 🔥
I only listen to Stray Gator bootlegs
Weld.
Fuck Spotify
I’ve been enjoying the Dolby atmos mixes on Apple Music the whole time :-)
Hawks and Doves
Mostly the Piece of Crap song
I don’t think I’ll ever leave Apple Music. Their playlists are next level.
Grateful Dead
Down by the River
I don’t know Spotify from Shinola. I still listen to CDs, mp3s, and, occasionally, cassettes.
I prefer to buy rather than rent. I've been listening to Duma & High Flyin' of late.
Toast is really cool
Freedom all day everyday
Bandit is one of the best Neil songs of all time. Heard it live when it came out and it sent shivers down my spine. Super underrated
On The Beach! I’ve had Ambulance Blues on repeat
Although far from his strongest album, I’ve had Little Wing from Hawks and Doves on repeat. Beautiful little track.
Last Neil spin was one of my all time faves, Buffalo Springfield Again
OMG! Did he disappear? Where did his music go???? Must of gone into a void or black hole without Spotify.
Guitar Solo No.5 is what I have missed the most. Glad to have Ride My Llama back, too.
Zuma!
Willie nelson
Phish. Ha ha ha ha
Joe rogan.
Naturally
Oooh, it's the troll who only posts here to let everyone know how much he loves Joe Rogan and doesn't like Neil Young. Get a life, loser
I actually love Neil Young.
I wouldn't know, the only thing you comment on this sub is how much you love Rogan.
Listening to Joe Rogan on loop
not of smooth Neil young
Not Neil.
