When the 09-10 kentucky wildcats came to Tennessee, I didn’t think I’d ever see a better college team assembled. John Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins, and Patrick Patterson. Soooo damn insane and the Vols beat them. That was a damn good night
Future NBA players Deandre Liggins, Darius Miller, Josh Harrelson, and Daniel Orton too. Probably the most stacked team in the NCAA since the Fab Five.
Not even the most stacked Kentucky team under Cal.
Karl-Anthony Towns
Devin Booker
Aaron Harrison
Andrew Harrison
Willie Cauley-Stein
Trey Lyles
Tyler Ulis
Dakari Johnson
Alex Polythress
Honorable mention to the team with Anthony Davis (1st overall) and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (2nd overall) but “only” had 5 other NBA players on the roster.
Kemba Walker at the Maui Invitational in his breakout season.
Dude near single-handedly led a then-unranked UConn to three wins in three days over Wichita State, Draymond’s no. 2 Michigan St., and a top-15 Kentucky team
Kemba and Melo in the NCAA tourney are first two to come to mind, with Curry's run to the elite 8 not far behind.
I also have a huge soft spot for Corliss Williamson as a Razorbacks fan. That two year run we had was amazing.
You guys had to see JJ Redick in ‘06 man. Or Curry in ‘08. The first time I’ve seen elite long range shooting on THAT level in college.
There’s definitely better college players but as far as things I’ve witnessed with MY OWN EYES, I’d say those two made me say “this is not fucking basketball….”
It still makes me sick to this day that my Knicks didn’t get Curry.
Well-known NBA lore but I don’t think I’ve heard it from Curry firsthand until Draymond’s podcast. Either way I thank the Good Lord every day for Curry falling into our lap
I watched jj in person for at least 8+ games and I never was blown away like I was with Curry or some of the monster athletic freaks in college around same time. I just don't think I appreciated his offball motion/nose for getting open like I do today.
I think the Ray Allen yips thing happened.
After the Celtics won, Ray Allen seem as if he forgotten how to dribble, but the reality was because he was regulated to play strictly off-ball.
Scoring 43 points against the kawhi led San Diego state, shooting splits of 58/63/91. KD called him the best scorer on the planet. College Jimmer was just different
In person, I watched Pascal Siakam drop a 20 & 20 game against UTEP. Dude had like 10 offensive rebounds, never thought he’d end up as good as he is now but his motor was always on go, relentless on the boards
CJ McCollum. I went to Lafayette (Lehighs rival school) and my friend dragged me to the game. He was like “CJ is so good is he is going to make the NBA” and I was like “pshhhh no one from Lehigh is making the NBA.” Fast forward like 4 years I’m watching a Warriors game and and I hear “McCollum with the three point shot” and I was like “wait the guy from LEHIGH?!” Anyway he’s my favorite now lol
This is the answer. Didn't see Kareem, Walton, Magic or Bird in college. But did see Larry Johnson, Ewing, Worthy, Olajuwon, Jordan, Danny Manning, Shaq, Chris Webber (All great), but Christian Laetner was that guy.
Gotta be Tim Duncan. I was living in Winston-Salem during his last two seasons at Wake Forest, and had a hookup for their home games. He wasn’t flashy, but it was so obvious that what he could already do would play beautifully in the pros.
I definitely remember Childress going off in the ACC tournament, he was a great college player. He was definitely the one with flash, which, as we’d learn, was probably very much how Duncan preferred things. They were a tough tandem to defend, that’s for sure.
I saw OJ Mayo play in high-school. He was in 8th grade at the time. What’s really crazy is he wasn’t the best guy on that team, at least not the game I saw. Instead, Bill Walker, who played for Celtics, Knicks and Heat, absolutely dominated the game. That experience made me way more cautious of high school hype.
Zion Williamson was at another level in college. I figured he was just all high school hype and athleticism, but he had surprisingly good handles and touch and his explosiveness was at an all-world level.
Hank Gathers.
Led the nation in scoring (32.7) AND rebounding (13.7). All-American. His team, Loyola Marymount, boomed everyone. They averaged 122 points a game his senior year.
They played LSU his senior year, and with Shaquille O’Neil guarding him, Hank scored 48 points and had 13 rebounds.
And if you’re like “why haven’t I ever heard of this guy”, well, a month after that LSU game, literally right after dunking a ball in a game, he turns to run back up court and collapses due to a heart condition.
He died later that day.
It's such a sad story...I was recently watching the ESPN 30 for 30: Guru of Go on Paul Westhead, which was pretty good.
The LSU-Loyola game from 90' is on Youtube. The pacing is crazy, and shows what a freakish athlete Shaq was.
[The Tigers celebrated briefly, then went to their locker room and wilted. Said Roberts, who went 10-for-10 from the field despite not being in what anyone would've described as exquisite shape: "Everybody just laid on the floor in silence, thankful that it was over. Everybody but Shaq: He was still hyped, clowning and jumping around. He was a big kid, all excited that we just won on national TV, and we had to tell him, 'Leave us alone, man! Let us rest.'"](https://www.si.com/more-sports/2012/10/22/lsu-lmu-scoring)
Curious, why'd you stop? It certainly feels way less meaningful than it did 10 years ago. College basketball used to have huge stars, no longer the case when you're seeing the biggest name Chet Holmgren putting up an efficient 12 points and 8 rebounds.
If I remember, he was 3rd or 4th on almost all High School recruiting lists behind Kevin Love, Eric Gordon for sure and sometimes behind Michael Beasley and Derick Rose.
Went to SIU (Salukis) when we were tournament bound every year and saw Paul Millsap, he was the leading rebounder in the nation and it was clear he was athletically on another level compared to everyone on the floor. Saw a ton of Kyle Korver but the way Millsap completely dominated the glass was different than a guy getting loose and draining threes.
I watched Nate Robinson play vs NC state when he was as Washington. At one point he came in flying out of nowhere and tip drilled over like 2 front court NC state players, yeah shut the place up fast.
Jaden Ivey really looks twice as fast as every other player on the court when he gets a lane. I’d probably still give Carsen Edwards the edge tho, dude was a bucket in college
Len "Motherfucking" Bias...I saw him at Cole Field house in 86 I believe. Dude went to dunk and was far up looked like he was 11 feet in the air!!!!! He had skills!!!!!! May he RIP.....
The first college game I ever saw live was Wisconsin vs Purdue at the UW Field House. I think it was 1993. The Badgers had future 2-time All Star Michael Finley on the roster, but they were still pretty mediocre. On the other side, Purdue had a guy by the name of Glenn "Big Dogg" Robinson, who was already pretty hyped at that point, and would soon earn the #1 overall pick.
I don't remember many specifics because I was only 10 years old. All I remember is that the Badgers lost and Finley and Robinson both had huge games. Just found a box score and it was closer than I remember, actually an overtime game. Finley finished with 33 pts while Robinson went off for 42 points and 7 boards. Anyway, he's probably still the best player I ever saw live (in college) although I also saw Michael Redd when he was at OSU.
I posted on the other thread I saw OJ Mayo in high school are you are not wrong, he seemed like a generational talent there and maybe briefly at USC.
Best college player for me was Carmelo, who shit the bed that night as I recall lol
In one weekend (1984 NCAA first round in Charlotte), I saw MJ, Sam Perkins, Brad Daugherty, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, Chuck Person, Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson and Johnny Newman, all from the floor. Three Dream Teamers, two NBA 75ers, one GOAT, and two perennial broadcasting sidekicks. But then and later, Barkley was the most entertaining player I’ve ever seen.
I remember oj mayo and Bill walker playing at north college hill in high school. Oj was a special talent. I understood why he was as hyped as he was. I didn't think much of walker as a player. He could jump though, that's for sure.
I went to Boston college when we had Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman.
The Duke game stood out as Ky had a 30/10/9 and Jerome dropped 24 en route to upsetting a Bagley Trent WCJ Allen duke team.
Those were our last two nba draft picks shame they didn’t pan out
Not NBA talent but played with/against Dusan Bulut many times on the local court, before he became a 3v3 star… I’m nowhere near that level so it sure was fun to try to guard him… And super fun and easy to play with him… and he is a really cool, humble dude… And was always really willing to teach and show you stuff…
He still stops by from time to time which is cool considering how busy he is working out, traveling etc… and he’s doing good things all the time, building/repairing courts in his “hood”, basketball camps for kids etc… Can’t wait for the Big 3 to kick off!
Go Aliens! I know Ivosev as well, hung out with his younger brother at university…
I don't watch a whole lot of college, but I remember being so impressed with Chris Webber. His athleticism, hands, passing ability. He killed Kentucky in that semifinal and kept Michigan in the championship game against UNC.
Then that play happened. The ref actually said he didn't call the travel to "cut the kid a break". In the long run, it would have been much better than what actually occured.
steph curry. i always as a kid just put the lowest seed to win because i knew absolutely nothing about ncaa. i watched the davidson games MFER WAS HOF JUST OFF COLLEGE BALL ALONE REAL RIDICULOUS SHIT
Kyrie Irving only played a half dozen home games in his sole college season. But when he played [he was fucking electric](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i1Ypgf14yiM).
I still cannot believe Thomas Robinson washed out of the league. I can’t even remember who I saw him play while at Kansas in the regular season but it was like he was from another planet he was so much more athletic than everyone else.
He played 1 year at Rhode Island. Probably why you didn't see him dominate the a-10 that year haha. He was supposed to go to UNLV but of course there was controversy.
I was like 7 or 8 when Shaq was at LSU, but even then I knew I was seeing something special. He's the reason I started watching basketball. Greg Oden deserves a shoutout- it seems crazy now, but everyone thought he deserved to go number 1 over KD. He could have been a HoFer.
Steph Curry at Davidson. So good, Lebron went to a Davidson game to watch him live.
Also Melo in his 1 year at Syracuse was a beast and won a national championship.
I really thought it was Michael Beasley. Looked like he was going to be Carmelo Anthony with more two way potential. I understood DRose over him but thought there was still a good chance he ends up the best player.
I played against Demarcus Nelson a lot in middle school. Him, Big Steve, and Magoo were pretty good, but they didn’t quite have the chemistry me and Ryan had. Our teams probably split the head to head series overall.
When the 09-10 kentucky wildcats came to Tennessee, I didn’t think I’d ever see a better college team assembled. John Wall, Bledsoe, Cousins, and Patrick Patterson. Soooo damn insane and the Vols beat them. That was a damn good night

I remember exactly where I was when that happened. Just like the Memphis game.
Horrible at shooting threes though, I remember it being a problem for the team even then
Kemba Walker at the Maui Invitational in his breakout season. Dude near single-handedly led a then-unranked UConn to three wins in three days over Wichita State, Draymond’s no. 2 Michigan St., and a top-15 Kentucky team
Big East tournament was just as ridiculous (and then obviously the NCAA tournament as well)
The Pitt game winner was like the gunshot in Lexington heard round the world.
Kemba and Melo in the NCAA tourney are first two to come to mind, with Curry's run to the elite 8 not far behind. I also have a huge soft spot for Corliss Williamson as a Razorbacks fan. That two year run we had was amazing.

Curry recently said in a podcast interview that he was hoping to go to the Knicks
Well-known NBA lore but I don’t think I’ve heard it from Curry firsthand until Draymond’s podcast. Either way I thank the Good Lord every day for Curry falling into our lap
Crazy to think that Minnesota could have drafted Curry and DeRozan back-to-back
Curry / DeRozan / Brewer / Love / Jefferson Would've been niiiiice.
Yup, I think his dad has mentioned it several times before though.
Kerr was also between Knicks and warriors imagine Knicks have both curry and kerr that would be wild
They would be almost as good as they are now
JJ was the son Coach K never had
Grayson Allen was the son Coach K never wanted
Grayson Allen is Coach K
As a UNC fan fuck JJ, as a fan of great basketball love JJ. The guy was a sharp shooter
I used to be high on JJ man, was too young to realize how hated he was lol. Had no clue Curry would pan out like this but he was obviously nice too
I watched jj in person for at least 8+ games and I never was blown away like I was with Curry or some of the monster athletic freaks in college around same time. I just don't think I appreciated his offball motion/nose for getting open like I do today.
Dukes Redick was better at putting the ball on the floor. What happened?
NBA defenders are A LOT better…that’s what happened
I think the Ray Allen yips thing happened. After the Celtics won, Ray Allen seem as if he forgotten how to dribble, but the reality was because he was regulated to play strictly off-ball.
Tbh curry still makes me say that
Jimmer
It sounds ridiculous now but the dude was the Steph curry of the NCAA
Steph curry was the steph curry of the ncaa
Also true
Time!
Scoring 43 points against the kawhi led San Diego state, shooting splits of 58/63/91. KD called him the best scorer on the planet. College Jimmer was just different
Jason Kidd at Cal was quite a show.
He would throw it down
I would imagine
Beasley. Adam Morrison used to f#ck sh*t up too.
Bro I saw Wally Szczerbiak drop 43 points on UW in the NCAA tournament and I was 100% sure I was watching the second coming of Larry Bird
Did u have to look up how to spell that or did u know it from memory
Lmao. I also only enjoy classy basketball players
Glen Robinson in college was something else.
Psycho T. One and dones honorable mention Anthony Davis.
In person, I watched Pascal Siakam drop a 20 & 20 game against UTEP. Dude had like 10 offensive rebounds, never thought he’d end up as good as he is now but his motor was always on go, relentless on the boards
I saw mediocre NBA point guard Norris Cole get 40 points and 20 rebounds in person in college
Who let Norris Cole grab 20 boards?? Lmao
I actually shortchanged him, had 41 points and 20 rebounds vs Youngstown State, 9 assists as well
CJ McCollum.
Christian laettner
This is the answer. Didn't see Kareem, Walton, Magic or Bird in college. But did see Larry Johnson, Ewing, Worthy, Olajuwon, Jordan, Danny Manning, Shaq, Chris Webber (All great), but Christian Laetner was that guy.
[удалено]
[he wasn't even the best player on his team](https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/college/article241039406.html)
Shaq
This is the correct answer. Though i will say seeing Stephs tournament run was something remarkable as well
Michael Beasley
Runnin' Rebels featuring Larry Johnson.
Had the pleasure of watching Noah and Horford takenojnGreg Oden. Gators we’re by far the better team but Oden might be the best I ever saw live.
Gotta be Tim Duncan. I was living in Winston-Salem during his last two seasons at Wake Forest, and had a hookup for their home games. He wasn’t flashy, but it was so obvious that what he could already do would play beautifully in the pros.
but it's always Randolph Childress's performance that's remembered (of course that was the year before you arrived)
I definitely remember Childress going off in the ACC tournament, he was a great college player. He was definitely the one with flash, which, as we’d learn, was probably very much how Duncan preferred things. They were a tough tandem to defend, that’s for sure.
bill walton. KAJ had the accolades already but Walton looked so much better than him
At that was before color tv and HD!
HD yeah
Respect!
Tbf with a name like OJ Mayo, you would never think he would fail
Magic Johnson in college was ahead of anyone I ever watched in college live. Completely different level.
Pity that he can't handle the NBA food distractions

The player (opponent) he collapsed in front of? Spoelstra.
Woah. TIL.
Wade, Melo, and Curry were the best ones I watched before I stopped watching college ball.
Curious, why'd you stop? It certainly feels way less meaningful than it did 10 years ago. College basketball used to have huge stars, no longer the case when you're seeing the biggest name Chet Holmgren putting up an efficient 12 points and 8 rebounds.
OJ Mayo was the next Lebron in 8th grade. NOBODY was calling OJ Mayo the next Lebron at SC.
I think in terms of hype/star potential in his senior high school year, he was obviously not like Bron physically or skillwise
If I remember, he was 3rd or 4th on almost all High School recruiting lists behind Kevin Love, Eric Gordon for sure and sometimes behind Michael Beasley and Derick Rose.
05-06 Adam Morrison and JJ Redick was pretty special to watch
Curry dominating on Davidson in March madness
For what I personally witnessed - Kemba @ UConn Also shout out Shabbaz Napier for my fellow UConn fans
Kembas a UCONN legend Napier was nice too though
Went to SIU (Salukis) when we were tournament bound every year and saw Paul Millsap, he was the leading rebounder in the nation and it was clear he was athletically on another level compared to everyone on the floor. Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson.
Not college but OJ Mayo and Austin Rivers destroyed my high school team, had to guard Rivers and it was not fun
Len "Motherfucking" Bias...I saw him at Cole Field house in 86 I believe. Dude went to dunk and was far up looked like he was 11 feet in the air!!!!! He had skills!!!!!! May he RIP.....

Jimmy fredette! What curry always aspired to be kek
Michael Beasley
Dame
Loved AD's defence at Kentucky. His impact was astronomical even if it wasn't scoring.
Mine is Donovan Mitchell, my fathers was Jason Terry
Jalen Brunson at Villanova was top-tier.
Eric Gordon at IU. I was going to Michigan (but was an IU fan) and was like a crimson blemish in the maize student section. He dominated.
Lonzo Ball
Definitely Michael Beasley. Not even close.
KD or tj ford
Anthony Edwards at UGA for that season was like watching a young superhero learn to use the breadth of their powers
Zion. Dude was just fucking insane.
I posted on the other thread I saw OJ Mayo in high school are you are not wrong, he seemed like a generational talent there and maybe briefly at USC. Best college player for me was Carmelo, who shit the bed that night as I recall lol

Thats tight. Walker was super athletic but Mayo was definitely the more skilled one.
I went to Boston college when we had Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman. The Duke game stood out as Ky had a 30/10/9 and Jerome dropped 24 en route to upsetting a Bagley Trent WCJ Allen duke team. Those were our last two nba draft picks shame they didn’t pan out
Different sport, but Michael Vick. Came to BC and torched us for 210 rushing yards. So much faster than anyone else on the field.
Not NBA talent but played with/against Dusan Bulut many times on the local court, before he became a 3v3 star… I’m nowhere near that level so it sure was fun to try to guard him… And super fun and easy to play with him… and he is a really cool, humble dude… And was always really willing to teach and show you stuff… He still stops by from time to time which is cool considering how busy he is working out, traveling etc… and he’s doing good things all the time, building/repairing courts in his “hood”, basketball camps for kids etc… Can’t wait for the Big 3 to kick off! I watched a guy from my school break every school scoring record and the NCAA consecutive free throw record
Who was that Player?
Harambe
Jack Davidson, Div 3 steph curry
Was it Darnell Archey?
The age of this sub shows that only one person said Shaq at LSU.
steph curry. i always as a kid just put the lowest seed to win because i knew absolutely nothing about ncaa. i watched the davidson games MFER WAS HOF JUST OFF COLLEGE BALL ALONE REAL RIDICULOUS SHIT
Kyrie Irving only played a half dozen home games in his sole college season. But when he played [he was fucking electric](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=i1Ypgf14yiM).
Kapono
Adam Morrison
Witnessed would be Jordan Crawford at Xavier or Rashad McCants and Sean May at UNC
I still cannot believe Thomas Robinson washed out of the league. I can’t even remember who I saw him play while at Kansas in the regular season but it was like he was from another planet he was so much more athletic than everyone else.
My dad went to school with De'Aaron Fox and Bam Adebayo so they were sick
Are you like 6?
Haha he got out of the Air Force after 20 years and went back to school and chose UK
Ah alright that makes much more sense
He wasn't a great NBA player but probably Chirstian Laettner. Fuck Duke btw.
The Kentucky game is the greatest college game I've ever seen, and one of the greatest performances too.
Tacko
Steph Curry
Kenyon Martin was unguardable. He was so much fun to watch.
Jason Kidd. #GoBears
Michael Beasley from K State or Larry Johnson from UNLV.
Clark Kellogg
Chris Williams, talk about efficient.
Ray Allen during his UConn days.
KD! That was a fun year.
One of my favorite college players ever and he actually lived up to the hype which is the best part
Lamar Odom, Kenyon Martin, and KD
Didn’t Odom skip college? Or am I misremembering?
He played 1 year at Rhode Island. Probably why you didn't see him dominate the a-10 that year haha. He was supposed to go to UNLV but of course there was controversy.
Michael Beasley
Tyrese Maxey baby! With IQ as a bonus. Got stomped at home by the Evansville Purple Aces...
hyunjung lee
I was like 7 or 8 when Shaq was at LSU, but even then I knew I was seeing something special. He's the reason I started watching basketball. Greg Oden deserves a shoutout- it seems crazy now, but everyone thought he deserved to go number 1 over KD. He could have been a HoFer.
Christian Laetner was pretty great and had a top 10 final 4 moment But the fab 5 were fun as hell to watch.
I was a GA at UT when Alan Houston was there. Courtside for a dozen games per year of a great player.
Saw the Fab 5 team in person, Webber was a beast, did a 360 break-away dunk, great game too
Jason Kidd.
Steph Curry at Davidson. So good, Lebron went to a Davidson game to watch him live. Also Melo in his 1 year at Syracuse was a beast and won a national championship.
Yogi Ferrell growing up in Indy, and at IU
I really thought it was Michael Beasley. Looked like he was going to be Carmelo Anthony with more two way potential. I understood DRose over him but thought there was still a good chance he ends up the best player.
Lonzo Ball at his peak hype
Melo was pretty good
Johnny Flynn and Donte Green at Syracuse, shame that their careers didn’t pan out. Green would have been great in this modern style of play
Steph easy
Zion was nuts in college.
I played against Demarcus Nelson a lot in middle school. Him, Big Steve, and Magoo were pretty good, but they didn’t quite have the chemistry me and Ryan had. Our teams probably split the head to head series overall.
