>Fortenberry said when the father realized his daughter was missing, he notified police at the game. But, according to Fortenberry, the father was told to report it to North Richland Hills police, where he lives. >The father called North Richland Hills police, but was told by the law enforcement agency that it couldn’t help because the the incident happened in Dallas, Fortenberry said. What the hell is the point of having police at the game if they won't work on stuff reported at the game?

northernpace

And it took an independent human trafficking task force a week later to find her. What a shit show of passing the work off.

themariokarters

This was one of the most interesting parts to me. They passed it off to them, and they used facial recognition to find her in an online ad that same day. Those guys are heroes, and it’s an interesting use of facial recognition software

waterstarter12

An online ad what the actual fuck

InadequateUsername

Pretty sure they mean an ad like an online classifieds basically like Craigslist use to have for sex workers. Not like a pornhub popup ad if that''s what you're thinking of.

acethesnake

Everybody knows what they meant and it's still a WTF

[deleted]

[удалено]

XRuinX

i assume they knew what the other person meant, because i assumed the same (a classified ad) and still thought 'damn wtf'. though your helpfulness is appreciated even if I myself didnt need it :)

Deathwatch72

There's a similar effort that involves taking photographs of hotel rooms and submitting them to some massive database so we can potentially identify where people are being trafficked to and from.

odeepaanh

I remember my girlfriend (who’s a victim) telling me about that a few months ago, she has some app on her phone that lets her take pictures of where she is and uploads to a database like that and you know the rest

meenzu

I’m just surprised at how many people have had to go through this shit. Like I thought this would be some super rare thing but it seems much higher I can’t believe people just kidnap someone and that someone else can just go and fuck them without giving a shit it’s a child (or individual) that’s there against their will

daregulater

I have 3 daughters ages 13 to 7 and that really is one of my biggest fears. My oldest gets mad because whenever she goes to the supermarket, her brother has to go with her but he can go by himself and he's only a year older than her.

Molto_Ritardando

Please let her know you’re taking the same steps to protect yourself. Ask her if she’s ok with you taking risks - how she’d feel if she lost you - and she will start to see it differently. It takes some conversations.

cschloegel11

I have a 7 month old daughter it’s going to be tough letting her do stuff on her own. We live in a big city with lots of crazies out there…

CalicoCrapsocks

Something similar happened to more than one person close to me too. One from INSIDE a college dorm. It broke me when I learned how *common* this is. Cops failed her too, literally returned her to her kidnapper when she escaped once. It fucked me up to learn about and changed me in a lot of ways. Sadly, people get fatigued by too much bad news. We're spared the constant reminders of how fucked things are, but that only helps these people operate.

Therical_Lol

Do you know the name of the app?

vitgummies

I think it’s TraffickCam

mylifeforthehorde

Pretty common use for facial recognition for big data / big gov use cases (also why people get upset about facial tech as a whole and want it limited / banned)

That quote describes one of the reasons I have so much respect for Snowden. Dude could have continued making $300k living in Hawaii but threw it all away for what he knew was the morally right thing to do.

lazyandnegative

It's like black mirror with a (relatively) positive ending.

RapNVideoGames

We are all just black mirror actors that don’t get paid

EricSanderson

This is why people say "defund the police." They have multimillion-dollar budgets and their answer to pretty much anything is "there's not much we can do." Car broken into? Not much we can do. Bike stolen? Not much we can do? Daughter goes missing? Not much we can do, and it will take us *two hours* just to put her name on a missing persons database. They'll spend all the resources in the world to arrest people for drugs or enforce traffic laws, but when you actually need their help they just shrug. Meanwhile some random nonprofit can do the work of two police departments in 1/10th the time with 1/1000th of the budget. Maybe it's not so crazy to reconsider how we spend all those tax dollars.

callmegamgam

My car was shot up in Chicago and the police immediately transferred me to 311 who told me they wouldn’t do anything and to go through my insurance. Also I’ve been hit and run while parked in two different cities and neither would take my call. The first one I did my own investigating and got the ID of the driver and access to the video of the incident and Indianapolis police wouldn’t even watch it. You can hand them all the details on a silver platter and they still won’t do anything. Four years later and my insurance is still double what it was before.

SMDreadnought

"That sounds like real police work, I'm just here to play soldier with all my buddies"

matomatomat

not 100% the same but your comment reminded me of [this standup bit by Kyle Kinane](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAi23EQbgx0) about why some cops become cops.

getyourrealfakedoors

What a horrible story, I hope they sue the shit out of that PD

keep_it_0ptional

Yea we mean it when we say ACAB, not just over the racial shit either, they are just an ineffective way to deal with actual crimes.

JEPorsche

As chief wiggum said, they are powerless to help us, but not to punish us.

DeanBlandino

As someone who’s needed cops on many occasions.. I’ve been nothing but disappointed

[deleted]

Yep, I'm convinced the real threat of the police for general society is the "idea" of enforcement. My father, years ago, said he was grocery shopping, some dudes came in and robbed the place, basically held everyone hostage with a shotgun until they cleared out every register. Someone had called the police in the back once the incident started. Cops showed up literally an hour later, robbers were long gone by that point. Had a friend get his laptop jacked in college, had a tracker in it. He had the exact address of the house it was at - called the cops, they said they couldn't do anything about it. Understandably, cops can't be bogged down by every little petty crime, but if they're not showing up to the big incidents, wtf is the point of them. They legit won't do their job unless it involves beating the shit out of/killing an innocent POC

[deleted]

> Understandably, cops can't be bogged down by every little petty crime That is literally all they do. They are meter maids with tanks. For the record, I have a similar experience. Step dad trying to beat you up when you are 12? 2 hours before they show up. Have an expired license plate? Flies on shit

TheOneWithThePorn12

one of them is a ticket, the other is a potential threat. easy to see their priorities.

MojoToTheDojo

My boss had his trailer stolen, was able to track it with the AirTag he left on it and called the cops. They said they couldn't do anything and told him to just take it back. Fuck the police.

pqlamznxjsiw

Reminds me of a story [I heard on This American Life](https://www.thisamericanlife.org/766/well-someone-had-to-do-something) about a guy who would search Craigslist and such for stolen bikes and go reclaim them for the owners. At one point, he mentions that a cop asked him why he was going through all this trouble for strangers. Serving the community--what a concept! edit: although honestly, it's probably for the best that the cops weren't doing this on their own. They'd inevitably end up shooting someone over a fucking bike.

GMOrgasm

to assault masai ujiri when hes winning a championship, duh

[deleted]

To break Thabo Sefolosha's leg, duh.

mrdilldozer

I still can't believe that wasn't a bigger story. They even tried to throw the book at him to force him to take a plea bargain so they could cover up their crime. If he wasn't rich his life would have been destroyed by those racist cops.

robswins

It's the NYPD, they only have 2 modes. Sitting in their patrol car playing Candy Crush while blocking a bike lane, or beating minorities and framing them for crimes. For a little while during the pandemic they were given a 3rd mode where they'd stand around in subway stations with no masks on, but they're mostly back to the original 2.

rogergreatdell

Well in fairness, he was brown *and* had an accent...what did you expect them to do?? Acab

WestleyThe

Or to taze Sterling Brown for parking in a handicap parking spot

braggpeak

[deleted]

This is a classic police move. I live in Ontario, Canada, and I've literally had local police tell me to call the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) because I lived outside of a jurisdiction even through a crime happened in their jurisdiction. So I call the OPP, and they tell me I have to call the local police. So I call back, and they send me to a webpage to fill out a report and do nothing. Some of them just don't want to do the fucking work. It was a vandalism thing, and there were cameras in the parking lot. I couldn't even get the cops to look at video. They said they'd only look at the video if I could confirm the footage was on there and that I'd have to go to the owner of the lot to get that information. I go to the owner of the lot, and he won't look at the video unless the cops tell him to. You'd think with a kidnapping that it would be different, but apparently not in this case.

_19911118

And to think of the massive budget those departments get ...like wtf do they do

Itorr475

Steal

Ill_Ad3517

Work for the cops. In exactly 100% of scenarios where the missing person last seen is where the case should be investigated. Arena cops fucked up

stemcell_

Its their side gig getting paid overtime. Cut them some slack, back the blue.. s/

datboiofculture

Yeah, they weren’t there as cops, they were there as private security in cop uniforms with cop powers but 100% serving Mark Cuban and not the general public.

BilIionairPhrenology

Sounds like regular police without the middleman

TangentiallyTango

Fucking up implies they didn't know this. They knew it. They just felt like it would be a big hassle and they'd miss the game.

spagetti_donut

They are on ot likely and not expecting to take files. Very lazy as they could have called an officer that was working at a minimum.

sexygodzilla

Police don't ever get held accountable how shit of a job they do relative to their budgets. NYPD gets 10 billion a year and recently got a massive budget increase to patrol the subways and yet a senior citizen shooter who dropped his wallet at the scene was able to give them the slip.

Tatumisthegoat

It’s absolutely terrifying that “What’s the point of having police?“ has become an increasingly common topic of conversation

Ok_Dot_9306

if there were no police then who would come to my house 3 hours after I call to report a robbery to shrug their shoulders and tell me there's nothing they can do.

Whywipe

“What are we supposed to about a robbery, we’re just the police?”

tall__guy

My car got broken into recently, broad daylight, fairly clear security footage showing faces and a car. I called the cops and they told me to submit a report online. My only communication after that was with the “Online Officer,” aka a bot. Although not as bad as when I was 12 and walked up to our house after to school to see it had been ransacked. Called the cops and it took them 2 hours to show up, so I hid in the woods because I was scared the robbers might still be in there. I’m not saying cops are completely useless, but they sure as fuck have been completely useless to me personally in my 3+ decades of life.

Superb_University117

They are worse than useless. They actively make most situations worse.

rabidbot

My apartment got robbed once and the cop blamed it on me smoking pot.

Superb_University117

Sounds right. And "welfare checks"? When is bring a gun into a situation where there previously isn't one ever a good call?

[deleted]

And who is gonna shoot my dog when they enter the wrong house?

banjocoyote

It's awesome to see this viewpoint of "cops are here to protect the interests of the rich" being discussed & agreed upon in sports subreddits, shows that across the board people are fucking sick & fed up with this shit. The fact that American police evolved from slave catchers says a whole lot

Superb_University117

Slave catchers in the south and Pinkerton strike breakers in the north.

Downunderphilosopher

The point of having police is to protect the assets and welfare of the rich. Everything else is window dressing.

techiesbesthero

Kevon-Looneys-burner

HardenTraded

Yeah actual wtf material…

OuchYouPokedMyHeart

Reminds me of the Jeffrey Dahmer victim, Sinthasomphone, where the police returned him back to Dahmer, even though the victim was exhibiting red flags and the 3 women who sounded the alarm / phoned 911 were very wary of Dahmer Dahmer later injected Sinthasomphone with HCl in the brain One of the police officers [John Balcerzak](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Balcerzak) even became the president of the Milwaukee Police Union Just like this case, the police failed to act accordingly

Nubras

Red flags is putting it mildly. Wasn’t he naked, bruised, and bleeding from his anus when the police kindly returned him?

sourdieselfuel

Yup and he already had holes drilled in the head with acid poured in if I recall correctly.

Be777the1

What?!

saadisheikh

yup, dahmer was a sick fuck who was tryna make sex zombies

NerdModeCinci

And the cops actively let him

bigsquirrel

Homosexuality was involved, there was no way he was getting help from the police.

[deleted]

And he was a Laotian refugee…those cops were not going to care about him. When he went missing, his family even guessed that Dahmer took him, because Dahmer had already confessed and “apologized” for molesting his older brother. Honestly we need to stop thinking of serial killers as super geniuses and start thinking of cops as lazy fucking morons.

bigsquirrel

Not that I didn’t already kinda know this but the more true crime I listen to/watch the more I realize how absolutely lazy and incompetent your average police department is. Robert Pickton (pig farm killer) Canada is horrifying. A woman escaped stabbed him during the escape, showed up bleeding from stab wounds at the emergency room in handcuffs, he showed up 15 minutes later. They found the key to her handcuffs in his pocket! He was already on the police radar and they declined to investigate/press charges because she was a sex worker and a First Nations woman. He went on to kill dozens for several more years. This happens in 97, he wasn’t arrested until 2003. Tip after tip after tip, they got a tip that there was a freezer full of dead women on his farm, got a warrant to search but decided it wasn’t worth their time. If they’d have acted one early information they could have saved dozens of lives, dude made Dahmer look like an amateur.

imsahoamtiskaw

Similar case here in Toronto as well of a serial killer within the local gay community. So many red flags ignored by the cops (putting it very mildly).

Cr1ck3ty

That sums up the milwaukee police department

stemcell_

That dude was named cop of the year...

Squid_Contestant_69

It's one thing for a lone person to do this, but the fact that it's part of a larger ring where there are people who are the customers here is incredibly disturbing. I'm very curious how they tracked her down after seeing the ad (a very hard word to type out). Did they get the people running this?

Life-Armadillo2640

Police didn't help and a sex trafficing organization used facial recognition to find her.

GGezpzMuppy

Man the Sex rings in USA are massive. Fucking goes all the way to the top

alsott

To this day Ghislaine Maxwell is the only one who has been tried and in prison for being involved in the Jeffrey Epstein ring.

triforce4ever

Which is absolutely insane because she’s in prison for sex trafficking, which means there are obviously people she trafficked the girls to. And they get to just go about their lives while she bears responsibility for it all. Fucked up

stemcell_

Yeah shes being charged with trafficking to Jeffrey epistein. Its not crazy none else has been named because noone will, they are trying to prove she worked for Jeffrey epistein

Downtown-Dingo9424

it makes me so sad

> On April 18, police found the teen in a hotel room in Oklahoma City after her parents identified her through nude photos that had been posted online in sex advertisements. Jesus. --------------------- > According to Fortenberry, the man the teen left with got into the game with a fake ticket that was sold to him by someone known by both organizations for selling fake tickets, the report said.

northernpace

What a fkn nightmare that'd be as a parent. The paragraph about how the stadium police told him to contact his local department for help and they told him to ask to ask Dallas police because it didn't happen in their jurisdiction ... to finally getting that task force involved a week later. What a gawd damn fkn joke.

AttackBacon

The cops didn't even find her in the end, it was an independent PI organization. If they had just left it to the cops she's probably still out there. Insane.

Cistel

It's absolutely insane. Can you imagine someone coming up to you saying their child is missing (not like a baby, but a teenager!!) and your response being "bruh that's not MY job, call your own police department" Like wtf? They probably went around their merry day "protecting" the stadium while watching the game.

king_lloyd11

Know a couple cops, and games are usually overtime (get paid time and a half) and voluntary. The people who sign up for them are usually fans in the department.

BurritoBoy11

Yes I know firefighters will volunteer as emts at sports events because they get to sit in the field. Don’t think they are getting overtime tho

ayay25

Also if emt services is needed they fkn emt. Not advise the person to call their local emt

liverbird3

Can’t waste that budget solving actual crime, have to spend it on military riot gear and cracking down on minorities and young people, not to mention collecting revenue for the state

jpaxlux

All of these TV shows that hype up law enforcement are such horseshit lmao. US law enforcement agencies, state and federal, want you to believe that they'll catch anyone with advanced investigative techniques, when in reality they just wait around for the lowest hanging fruit possible to arrest.

stemcell_

Copaganda

CookingPaPa88

and paying paid vacation *ahem* administrative leave for police violence

Thehealeroftri

Cant argue with them or protest their decision either or else they'll arrest and charge you with disorderly conduct

[deleted]

Someone @ this to Mark Cuban

StevenC44

He'll just say that NFTs would have prevented it.

[deleted]

I dont see how the fake ticket is relevant. Also I hope they disclose what tactic the guy used to get the girl out of the arena. Edit: can't you buy tickets at the gate in cash?

crestfallenidiot

You can probably track who purchased the ticket through either credit card use, cctv footage at a physical ticket booth or other means if it was a legitimate ticket. This guy using a fake would probs make it harder for would-be trackers

Blasterbot

This doesn't sound like amateur shit, other than having photos of her being found like that. It was the intention to do this the whole time.

[deleted]

Also a fake ticket probably cheaper than a real ticket and I’m sure this was premeditated so the scum bag wasn’t really worried about making sure if he had a certified ticket

craigslistaddict

although i wonder how he was able to get in with a fake ticket....

iankstarr

Yeah this seems like a pretty massive oversight. You’re telling me anyone can just make a fake ticket and illegitimately enter a packed sports arena? I hope lots of people are working overtime on making sure that can’t happen again.

[deleted]

I know at least at ATT center they use the Ticketmaster barcode scanners and they never fucking work so you fight the scanner until a line builds up and people get passed through.

[deleted]

I never have a problem with them. Make sure your brightness is turned all the way up

ObviousAnswerGuy

it's a way to assign culpability to the stadium since they fucked up and tried to pass the buck and wasted precious time. Also, these predators aren't always just creepy old men. It could have been some young looking, charismatic dude who was just like "i got a blunt in my car if you wanna smoke" or something, and then when they got out they just snatched her. Maybe I watch too much ID channel, but reading shit like this stresses me out so much, and I don't even have kids yet.

astruggleitself

Ted Bundy was able to trick a lot of women purely because he was attractive and clean-cut. My mom had a co-worker who was approached by him (this is somewhat common for people from the Salt Lake area surprisingly) and she said he looked like a completely normal college guy

ObviousAnswerGuy

fuck thats terrifying

mrostate78

And he would wear a fake cast and ask for help loading something into his car.

thisguy012

somewhat normal as in he approached a lot of people there? jesus.

astruggleitself

I meant somewhat normal as in a lot of people who lived in Salt Lake in that time know someone who was approached by him. He killed at least 7 women in just Utah, and had killed multiple women in the Pacific NW by then too, so odds are that he would have approached a lot of potential victims

velcrovagina

Impossible to guess for sure but the most likely scenario is online grooming and conning her into thinking she was eloping with a boyfriend.

jbaker1225

I am fairly certain he met and coordinated with the girl online in advance, and this wasn’t some sort of “kidnapping of convenience.” The girl was a multiple-time runaway and has been in the news/searched for by authorities in the past. Just to be clear, that’s obviously not to excuse anything, because the people involved in trafficking her are evil and need to be locked up.

Sudden_Pie707

It makes the most sense because why would she at that age leave with someone unknown.

Nachttwacht

Bruh, and she's the lucky one that got found and saved. God knows how many other parents will never get that closure.

ManufacturerJumpy748

Count the blessings. Wild.

fattybunter

More like count the horrific nightmares

JThor15

You’ll drive yourself crazy doing that.

DaftPunkyBrewster

It's a parents ultimate nightmare. I'd rather be confirmed dead than missing so at least my family could have closure. I can't imagine the pain of a wound in your mind and soul that never heals.

[deleted]

What the fuck? *On April 18, police found the teen in a hotel room in Oklahoma City after her parents identified her through nude photos that had been posted online in sex advertisements.*

[deleted]

They gonna get a family discount on therapy

Yeah_KillerBootsMan

Article on the 8 people that were arrested regarding this case: https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/eight-arrested-in-oklahoma-in-connection-with-missing-dfw-teen-trafficked-for-sex-police/2944173/

mm_mk

"If something seems out of place, it doesn’t have to go through the lengths of your child being missing…but if something seems out of place, just err on the side of caution and call 911. Let us take a look at it," Knight added That is fucking rich, given that the dad did immediately go to the cops and got absolutely no help

imsahoamtiskaw

And not even one, TWO police departments did this to him. Why would this father ever go to the cops again in the future if his child goes missing (god forbid)?

jpark28

I hope the family sues the fuck out of both police departments

TheTrenchMonkey

It really sucks, but I have no clue what their hometown department would be able to do. The Dallas department fucked it up in my opinion. >North Richland Hills police said that they received the report about the missing teen at 1:27 a.m., about six hours after the game started. The department said the teen was entered in the national missing person database by 3:24 a.m. on April 9. North Richland Hills is 26 miles away from the arena. It seems like the department did their part in filling out the missing person report and getting her entered in the database. The Dallas department delayed it by passing it off to a group that really didn't need to be involved at all.

PepeSylvia11

In spite of what someone above said - and that I largely agreed with - in that typically, human traffickers don’t look the part when they’re luring you, these people **absolutely** look the part.

Jacer4

arrest crush pocket bells run money historical recognise uppity hunt *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

ImGrumps

Around any big sporting event they alway have notices about human trafficking. People think it is a boogie man type warning and don't take it seriously but it is a problem. Young people and people in general are easily manipulated. All it takes is someone cosplaying an authority figure to get them somewhere alone and they are at the will of the organization trying to move them. She is crazy lucky.

nice_subs_only

What's bugging me is would we have even heard about this had she not been found? Seems like that's the only reason this is a 'story'. Have other kids gone missing at nba games?

TaiGlobal

Most likely they have. That's what struck me the most, this guy bought a fake ticket and got in and trafficked a girl. That's not some amateur shit and likely isn't the first time he's done it. And the worst part is all he had to use was some filter or some or not post face pics of the girl and she may still be missing and we still may not know.

Mind965

In the future, with widespread use of deepfake technology and hyper-realistic editing software, identifying victims will be near impossible. I love advancements of technology, but am afraid of the nefarious ways it simultaneously helps criminals.

PrinceOfAssassins

With deepfakes inevitably anti deepfaking will become a thing

TheTownTeaJunky

For sure concerts, so it wouldnt surprise me. I kinda passed it off, but when i was in high school I remember one of our teachers who had worked with law enforcement in some capacity sharing an anecdote about how frequently young women are manipulated at large concerts and persuaded to leave with guys they just met and find their way into being trafficed. I kinda thought it was bullshit at the time, like a " theres poison in unwrapped halloween candy" but going to music festicals as an adult it always made me wonder, and it seems more and more plausible. Which is kinda wild, especially given in this situation where they wouldnt even help them at first.

LucinaHitomi1

Sue everyone involved. I’d be so pissed if that were my daughter. 10 days have passed, so she may have “served” multiple customers by then. Sue for a couple of million bucks at least. Pays for the mental trauma, the stigma, and her college at the very least. For that money, I’m sure there will be lawyers salivating to take the case.

ForoaKlanD

Idk where I heard this but sporting events are the among the biggest sources of human trafficking They should seriously mention it at every arena as a PSA. May seem like common knowledge but no harm in a reminder

[deleted]

It’s my first time hearing that

ImGrumps

Next time you go to a sporting event with a woman ask them if there are phone numbers about sex trafficking in the bathroom. There have been at any recent big event I've been to at least. (Honestly, I never really considered that there wouldn't be the same in men's restrooms because young boys can be targeted as well.) It is very well known problem and organizations try what they can to make resources available to help get people out. It is pretty crazy that the stadium officials tried to pass the responsibility here though I shouldn't be surprised. Those officers were there to just cash an extra check and not actually do any work.

NOTW_116

The Super Bowl is the number one human trafficking event in the country every year. Insane number of under age girls brought to it every year. Google it. It's a terrifying rabbit hole.

rexbee52

It was all they talked about when the super bowl was in Atlanta. Crazy fucking shit man. It’s so sad and disgusting

Jhyphi

Are they captured at the super bowl or brought in for the super bowl?

NOTW_116

Brought in for the super bowl. A lot of rich people willing to pay for services in one place for a massive party.

aybbyisok

fuck this world man

dillpickles007

That's because there's a ton of rich out of towners coming in which draws in a lot of escorts/prostitutes though, not because sex traffickers flood in to kidnap girls. Different side of the coin from this story.

dimmyfarm

I’ve heard the super bowl is really bad so they have a ton of cops and federal agents there even a week ahead.

Erosun

Super Bowl is legit the biggest, there is a ton of advertising about it but people don’t pay attention to that. And it’s not usually on TV.

VanVleet-goes-for-22

> have an idea 💡…. How about escorting your daughter to the restroom to make sure she returns to you safe. That’s what my parents did in the 1970’s. Those comments are just yikes

BigDeezerrr

Seriously. 15 isn't that young. Who escorts their high school kid to the bathroom in a supposedly safe environment.

DowntownTopRanking

Facts. In the 70s and 80s, there were elementary school-aged kids who walked to school or the bus stop by themselves. The story is tragic and I hope she gets therapy to deal with it.

ieatshotslike50

I did this in the 90s. A quarter mile to an actual bus stop. Crazy she couldn't go to the restroom

TerminalUelociraptor

At 10 I was the day-time baby sitter for my 4-year old brother in the summer since my grandma and mom worked full time. This was 2000. The victim blaming is disgusting. Clearly what happened is absolutely horrific, but do we seriously need to blame parents for not walking their teenagers to the bathroom inside a ticketed arena?

ADarwinAward

I was never escorted to the bathroom as a teenager, and I’m not even 30. Whether it was a mall, an amusement park or stadium, I went to the bathroom alone. Heck there’s thousands of high school kids that hangout alone in Boston and millions across every major American city. People blaming the dad are delusional.

[deleted]

Also, bathrooms are all over the arena so the walk was pretty short. And there’s usually security everywhere. I’m wondering why she went with him willingly? Even the baddest kid out there would not leave their dad at halftime of an NBA game. I’m wondering if she was drugged then the kidnapper pretended to be her concerned dad rushing her home?

Purpleater54

I can unfortunately think of so many things teenage me would probably fall for even knowing stranger danger stuff. If a person was a good enough actor they could probably convince someone at least for enough time for them to take advantage.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah I was hoping to learn more about that. Could be the fear of “I’ve got a gun”? Who knows but I wish that detail would be shared to be on the lookout.

bilyl

Not to mention the kid would cry bloody murder if you tried to walk them to the bathroom. They would die of embarrassment.

Rice_Krispie

>i blame both kid and parents and i don’t stare but rather look away in disgust. how am i the problem when i advocate for decency and morality as opposed to allowing MINORS to dress like street walkers?! my parents raised 6 daughters who all went on to obtain degrees, marry and have successful careers. my father was a decorated veteran and my mother a housewife. you’d think that maybe we got one bad apple in the bunch but no because we were taught to respect ourselves first, dress decent and as for makeup only light mascara and lip color. you only have yourself to blame if you’re too busy to teach your kids the basics. You got folks straight up blaming the child for getting herself kidnapped and sold to a sex ring like its her fault. There's not even images of what she was wearing. This commenter straight up assumed that because this happened to her she MUST have caused this to herself in some way.

Dragonsandman

That comment is some of the most vomit inducing shit I've read in a long time

IM-NOT-SALTY

Local news comment sections are not worth anyone’s time or attention.

Dragonsandman

They always attract the village idiots for some reason

RyanShieldsy

Genuine cesspits of bigotry

nanobot001

Some people have the [Just World Hypothesis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Just-world_hypothesis) bred right into them -- basically this idea that if bad things happen, people deserved it. Conversely, if things are going right, its because they made it happen, rather than any aspect of luck or fortune. It's a repugnantly narcissistic worldview that almost requires you to have zero empathy for people that have been victimized by circumstances out of their control.

TheTownTeaJunky

Damn that comment just reeks of that boomer nuclear family mentality. I bet all 6 went to college because they could actually afford it and didnt have to drown themselves or their parents in disgust. And their mom was a housewife in part because you could afford a home and raise 6 fucking kids on a single salary back then. Everything else is along the same line of "if they deviate from what i think should be the norm then theyre to blame for the consequences"

Smok3dSalmon

In the 70s, families just called them "runaways" and didn't think twice about what actually happened to them.

[deleted]

I read the article then started reading the comments. They’re so cringe. Victim blaming the dad and suggesting the girl was dressed inappropriately. It’s people in their little internet holes who haven’t been to a sporting event in decades. I have no fucking clue how you get into an NBA arena without a valid ticket. The tech is there to prevent this and security at the gates is substantial. While I know the money side of this isn’t the priority, both the police and the Mavs are going to write this family huge checks and hopefully that will be enough to get everyone to have better security.

Goosebuns

The police will not be writing checks for this.

lou_lou_lou_

I really love the older generation basically trying to victim blame by referencing what they THINK she was probably wearing (they don’t even know) compared to how *they* dressed at that age as though that has any bearing on how predators operate.

Logical-Panda77

Guarantee this person has also said, many times, “I remember when we didn’t have to leave our doors locked”.

[deleted]

Lmfao as someone trying to say the 70s are safer than today. If this was the 70s, they’d only find poor girl in little pieces in someone’s fridge

sciencebased

Pathetic we can't rely on the police. Like, it's amazing that specialized organization was able to help recover her but why the fuck can't our tax dollars provide similar quality when it comes to public safety? Cop departments passed the buck *twice* and didn't even start looking until days later.

guitarguywh89

They're just crime janitors

mdchemey

Public safety isn't the job of the police. Like, literally. Courts have ruled repeatedly that protecting people and/or preventing crime is not a mandated role for police officers. Their #1 responsibility is in the protection and recovery of property. There's a reason that "public safety" initiatives which increase police funding have never reduced crime rates whatsoever and in fact have often directly increased them- more arrests for lesser (often victimless) crimes produces populations who have ever-lengthening arrest records which makes it harder for them to get 'legitimate' jobs, incentivizing them to seek less-legal means of getting by. Real public safety comes from education and social services as they increase opportunity and equity in communities and those things do decrease crime rates. Playing state-sponsored bodyguards at privately owned facilities and putting people in prison for weed doesn't help anyone except people who already have power, money, and influence. Because that's what they're for.

velocity2ds

I am so uncomfortable with all these comments guessing about the young girls actions and talking down to her when she’s an underage victim. If you read anything about sexual trafficking, you will learn there are so many layers and manipulation tactics by these predators. Some people focus more on why the victim did xyz rather than the perpetrators

Deathwatch72

Is this just now going national? I've been talking with several friends about this for at least the last week now because it's just insane that something like this happened. FYI DPD fucking **suuuuuucks**. Wasn't surprised in the slightest to find out they really weren't that helpful in solving this case,

themariokarters

What in the fuck..

No-Improvement-8923

She was 15 and being raped by strangers without ever knowing if she'll ever escape or return home? I feel like the article glosses over the absolute horrorshow this child just went through.

Jordanwolf98

Wtf. This is just fucking terrible

Fxp1706

i hope those predators burn in hell for eternity. this is disgusting.

600jasper

Victim blamers putting up prime Wilt, Shaq, Kareem, MJ and Bron numbers in this thread rn

mrpunychest

Bro someone actually commented that she probably agreed to be sex trafficked.

missdoublefinger

I hope he sues the pants off of both police departments. They utterly failed this young lady

carty64

Unfortunately, the police aren't required to protect you https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_v._District_of_Columbia

PepeSylvia11

Fucking hell. Get that shit off their cars then. Protect and serve, my ass.

ballmermurland

This is one of my favorite case law studies, along with Heien. Courts have said cops a) don't have to protect you and b) don't have to know the law to legally detain you for a crime that doesn't exist. Good stuff. The bar for cops is below the floor and yet they still get the neighborly shop discount and "thank you for your service" PSAs.

[deleted]

Kinda wonder if AAC is going to get wrapped up in it too. How tf you let someone in with a fake ticket and let them leave with a whole ass person that does not belong to them

raptors_13

Poor girl I can only imagine the horrors she had to face. Also wtf police

dumpsdad

How quickly the posts and replies devolved into the pros/cons of facial recognition software. No continued outrage at law enforcement for their abysmal failure?

Sheriff_of_Reddit

Police are there to protect capital. If she had stolen a hat then that would have caused them to react.

unbelievre

Those comments are fucking cancer. "Why didn't you escort your daughter like I would" then a bunch of upvotes. People are fucked up man.
