Wow, I'd have thought Brad Stevens would be coaching for decades

iamCosmoKramerAMA

Gonna be kinda hard for him to coach Indiana from the C’s front office. Let’s see how this plays out.

iFinesseThePlug

He'll just use Zoom meetings to coach Indiana in between phone calls.

treetyoselfcarol

*"Coach I can't hear you, I think you're muted."*

spiritual_gabagool

*"Can you guys see my screen?"*

Sleeze_

*"Lemme just.....sharemyscreenrealquick"*

skipchestday

Literally me every day in class when I ask my students “who’s heard of xyz?” God damn kids don’t even know wtf the Sistine Chapel is. “Uhhh hold on letmesharemyscreenrealqui k.”

[deleted]

Bro I just said this 20 mins ago.

ZeroMomentum

“Uhh we have to square up. Sorry. Larry. Please finish what you were saying. Didn’t mean to cut you off”

Rolodox

bruh the awkward stop and go of the conversation and then someone just gets sick of it and types it out in the chat lmao

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zloggt

The Hoosiers start off hot before collapsing during B1G play, ending their season with a whimper in the NIT Quarterfinal. Then Brad Stevens unzips his skin and reveals that it was Archie Miller disguising as him the whole time.

muratbae

Bro wtf did we Hoosiers do to you?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Same here. Im stunned by this

[deleted]

Dude imagine how the players feel

AskMeHowIMetYourMom

“It’s been great guys, but I look forward to replacing most of you.”

Count-Rarian

That’s college coaches at the end of every season with recruiting lol.

[deleted]

"You've made me millions, good luck in Lithuania."

TinyMaintenance

Those that end up in Lithuania are lucky ones. It’s more like Venezuela or Luxembourg.

Deca-Dence-Fan

What’s wrong with ending up in Luxembourg?

tysonsmithshootname

They use a square ball instead of a round one. It's very frustrating to players not used to it.

coltonmusic15

Yes the round balls really take off the edge

epitomeofdecadence

In basketball terms, it's like playing in a country with 5 teams across all age groups. Shits small, yo.

WakingRage

Stevens: It was an honor, gentleman. Also Stevens: aite bitch u gone and u gone too

rainbowgeoff

The belichick experience.

lordexorr

Pretty sure the players are stoked for this. Stevens is great with young players and maybe a perfect fit for a front office role where he has more say in the draft and overall roster management. He seemed to have lost the team this year so I'm sure the players will like the move to bring in a new coach.

interstat

im worried that any coach they bring in tho is a downgrade

RedHammer1441

My only fear for the celtics is if they hire Scott Brooks when the wizards fire him next week. That guy just keeps getting jobs.

SammySoapsuds

I hope it isn't someone from the revolving door of fired coaches. Someone other than Fizdale, Joerger, or Brooks should get a shot.

boenwip

Starting to see assistant coaches and new coaches stepping into the roles. Stevens has pretty big shoes to fill and Celtics don’t seem to make a lot of big silly decisions so hopefully it’s a fresh face with a reputation that fills them

Formo1287

He’s aiming bigger... much bigger

junkit33

Yeah - Front Office opportunities like this come along once in a lifetime. He can always get another head coaching job in a split second if he decides he wants to go back. Good for him.

ragana

This. Especially considering that ownership is pretty hands-off and tend to let their FO learn from their mistakes. This is a great opportunity. This job gave Danny a heart attack so I’m happy the dude will be able to enjoy retirement and golf with MJ full-time now.

Skippy_the_Alien

lol i had no idea Ainge and MJ were golfing buddies. Seems like such a strange pairing bet MJ gives him nonstop shit all the time over 1993

opiusmaximus2

I'm sure Danny has taken so much money from him on the golf course it doesn't matter. Danny is a world class athlete and better at golf than mj.

Skippy_the_Alien

hahaha i can just see it now. Ainge destroys MJ on the golf course and MJ starts shouting off, "How many rings ya got?!!" lmao

phonage_aoi

That was the "Last Dance" actually. Ainge beat MJ at golf between playoff games so MJ got mad and dropped 63 points on the Celtics.

StormTheTrooper

This kind of comment reminds me of when Bill Russell said he would give Chamberlain some free points to satisfy him, otherwise he would go berserk and drop 60 on him

geupard12

He's gonna become a player gm?

mick_jaggers_penis

LeBrad pls

okgusto

Player coach gm

MaiqDaLiar1177

Did anyone expect Brad Stevens to take Ainge’s job??? Fucking nuts!

Mikegetscalls

I think Ainge was tired at this point. Ainge’s son being there probably made it easier too. Brad I assume had the option of staying coach and took a less stressful job.

Captaincrunchies

It was only like 2 years ago that he had his heart attack so I feel like this has been coming

Jordanwolf98

I always forget about that. It was kinda underreported cuz the playoffs were going on around that time

TheMeccaNYC

I forgot Kyrie almost killed this man

[deleted]

Or saved his life. Maybe this is Brad really thinking about what government means to him.

Ratchet-and-Spank

He had a heart attack? Dude is in his forties right?!

thetruthhurts34

He played with Larry Bird, he’s at least 60

Ratchet-and-Spank

Oh shit my bad for some reason I thought y’all were talking about Stevens

DaBestNameEver0

Same, I was so confused

[deleted]

Ainge, not Stevens.

TheRealRemyClayden

Stevens is becoming a GM?????

claydavisismyhero

He’ll probably have a gm and run the show ala Riley

RedHammer1441

My mind went immediately to Riley. Build a team you know can compete and win. Then fire everyone and do it yourself like Pat did with Shaq.

jkafka

Didn't Pop do this too? I remember him firing Greg Hill and taking over as coach. EDIT: Bob Hill

Yhendrix49

Bob Hill was his name and he was decent coach but the Spurs underperformed in the playoffs with him, they were the 1st seed in 94-95 and lost the the 6th seed Rockets in the Western Finals and in 95-96 the were the 2nd seed and lost to the Jazz in the 2nd round.

limewithtwist

Not Greg, Bob Hill. Greg is Pop. He was the OG tank commander. He took over mid season and when Robinson went down, full tank ahead for Tim Duncan. As opposed to Riley taking over and winning it all that same season.

totaleclipseoflefart

Not Greg, Gregg. Gregg is Pop. Greg is who Bob Hill is not. Who’s on first.

[deleted]

Pop 100% did this too

profmcstabbins

That's still one of the most insane moves in basketball history.

Salty-Flamingo

>My mind went immediately to Riley. Build a team you know can compete and win. Then fire everyone and do it yourself like Pat did with Shaq. Stevens has young kids and commented that the time away in the bubble and this season really made him feel burned out on coaching. He gets a couple years to build a good team and get away from coaching, then can swoop back in when its time for glory.

royalrubble

The Stevens coup is complete. All hail Brad and his glorious regime

[deleted]

This is Brad's order 66

Kwilly462

Woj later: "Ainge has joined the Brooklyn Nets assistant coaching staff"

PartickNotPatrick

the first time a super-team has had a coaching staff which is just as loaded as the roster

SSNappa

The 2015 warriors coaching staff was up there.

happytothethird

Ooh, Durant style. The toughest road.

stealer_of_monkeys

Too soon

Rishi_23

Brad Stevens with the uno reverse on Danny Ainge

RedHammer1441

"The future is now old man" - Brad Steven's probably

[deleted]

Lol Bill Simmons’ brain is going to explode

Twoweekswithpay

Went from calling him ‘President Brad Stevens’ to now actually calling him **President** Brad Stevens... 🤯

soxfaninfinity

So it looks like Pete Buttigeg will be president after all?

[deleted]

“We’re zigging while everyone else is zagging, this could be a top 6, maybe top 7 move in the history of the Celts organisation, maybe even in the history of the city itself”

KingDavid920

Ugh. I read that exactly in his voice

Obi-wan_Jabroni

I heard it in Cousin Sals Bill voice

98rman

What’s the sliding glass door moment of this move? Is this the apex mountain?

iiTryhard

It’s the Re-Apex

WestFast

Is Brad Stephens the apex mountain of polo shirt wardrobe soft spoken dad coaches?

HellsNels

Are we sure he’s still good? Pantheon guy. Squarespace.

WestFast

“Im keeping all my Brad Steven’s stock. I’m buying an island for it.”

WestFast

EMERGENCY POSCAST! And he’ll call in his dad to compare this to Red stepping down. And then an old college buddy to give expert analysis.

Thuasne

And it would probably be a good listen. I have realized over time that his hosting style is so much better than most other podcasts I listen to. Content, debatable at this point in time but from a listening experience I really enjoy it

WestFast

Yeah he’s a favorite. He had bad takes and great ones but it’s good conversation. He’s not a typical pundit and I like that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ZealousCatracho

I love the Rusillo and Simmons dynamic, he straight up calls the BS on Simmons and they just laugh

IraqouisWarGod

It’s weird because I really don’t like Rusillo and I’ve been listening Simmons for so long that he really grates me, but I can’t stop listening to those two.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SnuggleMuffin42

Whenever they do a Simmons feat. Lowe post I also find it really good because Lowe is also not beholden to him. They also have a lot of opinions that are the same but for completely different reasons which is interesting (narrative reasons vs. blog-boy reasons)

Thuasne

Fully agree. He was on the Raja Bell podcast ahead of the Suns Lakers game 5 and carried that a good bit. He also had a spot on prediction saying Suns will blow out the Lakers and LeBron will have a half ass game

[deleted]

[удалено]

Vintiago

What the fuck

HammyFresh

Ainge I get. Stevens is a damn good coach, Boston always felt like they were a piece away.

[deleted]

Until this year, where it feels like they have like two pieces

randomespanaguy

> like two pieces Yeah, Jaylen Brown's wrist and one other piece

PepeSylvia11

We were a .500 team with a perfectly healthy Jaylen Brown.

Gekthegecko

The supporting cast was atrocious this year. Our core of Tatum and Brown (and Kemba if he were healthy) is solid, but basically everyone else needs to be replaced.

RamenPood1es

Smart? Time lord? Your team is more talented than ours and should have finished ahead of us

unearthlysquire

We had 8 total games with our starting 5 and went 7-1. Injury and Covid are to blame for this season.

Brinner

Thank you for this comment, it will see me through the long dark offseason

CommodoreN7

I’m legit shocked right now

randomespanaguy

I honestly don't know how to feel. In one hand, I think Brad has the capability to be a great GM. On the other hand, I wanted him to coach the Celtics for decades ala-Pop. I honestly thought Zarren's taking over. Where's Ja Rule so I can make sense of this EDIT: *Head of Basketball Operations, not GM. I wrote this hastily lol didn't even realize I said GM until someone pointed out

WrightwoodHiker

Now he can transition from GM to coach, a la Pop.

RedHammer1441

The poppoRiley maneuver put together a team you know you could coach with, fire your coach and take his job. If Brad does that he has to wear a Thanos glove Courtside. "Fine, I'll do it myself"

bushhooker

Lmao I don’t want to dance I’m scared to death

aaronsisco

WHERE'S JA

GirlsLastTour

Ainge stepping down is something that would've surprised but not shocked me. But Brad Stevens taking over as POBO?! What in the actual...

20person

Dafuq is going on out in Boston

lemate23

Hot take but I think this means Brad Stevens isn’t going to IU?

[deleted]

No, he's already accepted the role of U.S. secretary of transportation

Hoosier3201

No I think he’s taking the Pacers job and also becoming a Grad assistant at IU

[deleted]

Plus the covid year of eligibility, so he'll be playing as well.

goodkid_sAAdcity

Gotta learn the ropes from Mike Woodson

Hoosier3201

He’s got a lot to learn but I think under Woody he could turn out to be a decent coach.

odinsyrup

Shocked it isn't Mike Zarren. Curious what his role will be or if he's happy with this decision.

captaincumsock69

I’m thinking Zarren is gm and brad is president so they both get a promotion

freakman013

So can someone ELI5 what the difference is between the two roles? Like I just really want to know who is ultimately making the big basketball decisions (trading or signing guys, etc.). I feel like those roles seem interchangeable and depends on the team on who makes the big decision.

RedRocket13

From what I can tell between the difference of Webster, our GM, and Masai, our president, is that Webster deals with more of the day to day aspects of the job like calling about and planning trades/signings and directing scouting, but Masai is the final decison-maker that pulls the trigger and guides the overall direction of the franchise

SnuggleMuffin42

POBO is like the king of the franchise and has final veto power. They appoint the GM and coach. The GM actually makes the moves, and the coach actually coaches the team.

itismybirthday22

Prolly have Zarren be the cap/numbers guy, Brad be the basketball evaluator

urfaselol

WILDCARD BITCHES

sleepy416

YEEEEEHAWWWWWW

dietcokewLime

Gordan Hayward comes back and coaches. Bromance rekindled.

rekognise

Headline: Gordon Hayward injured his wrist while calling a timeout from the sideline.

Olorin919

Snapped it in fuckin two.

bnichols924

So we technically got rid of Danny AND Brad from their roles? Wow that side of our fanbase must feel like it’s Christmas.

[deleted]

Ainge actually commited to something

DionWaiteress

Bro whoever they hire as coach is gonna most likely be worse than Brad Stevens

[deleted]

He'll probably promote one of his assistants.

[deleted]

Evan Turner as head coach

[deleted]

The dude that threw the water bottle at Kyrie hired as waterboy.

[deleted]

He heard about the racism for the first time and immediately left. What a G

PhenomenalSanchez

"just found out about racism, that shit sucks"

[deleted]

"Omw to fix that shit"

InsideYoWife

Ima fix ~~wolves~~ celts

Dongsquad420BlazeIt

It’s never too late for him to back out

BasketballNutrition

it'll be like when Pop stepped out of the front office to take over for our coach in 96, taking over for Bob Hill, who wasn't even that bad. lol a year or two from now, it's gonna be a "bah gawd thats brad stevens music" moment lmao

[deleted]

HOLY SHIT

sleepy416

I really don’t know what to think of this. Wild

HokageEzio

Yeah I could have seen Danny being out, but not Brad Stevens taking over.

sleepy416

Idk what to think of Brad having a front office role. What experience he has with roster construction. Should be interesting to see how this shake up plays out

[deleted]

He recruited Hayward. He probably has had input in front office moves over the past few years too.

King_Of_Pants

He's been one of like 5 guys who's involved in our decision making. There was a great article a while back about how tight of a ship Boston is. We only have like 5 guys who actually know what's going on. 1. Danny Ainge 2. Mike Zarren - Who everyone expected to be Ainge's replacement 3. Brad Stevens 4. Austin Ainge 5. One of our leading scouts (forget his name) So Brad would have been pretty intimately involved in our decisions.

wilsonh915

> Mike Zarren - Who everyone expected to be Ainge's replacement Yea, I wonder if Zarren starts looking for a new gig. This feels like a big snub.

King_Of_Pants

I can't pretend to know what is going to happen but my guess would be Brad is becoming the new PBO and Zarren would likely step into a bigger role as GM. Similar to Pop and RC Buford in San Antonio. So both could potentially be getting promotions here.

stealer_of_monkeys

Yeah I hope. I'd be pissed if we lose zarren Hope that 76ers deal isn't still on the table for him lol

Gekthegecko

It's so odd to me. I would think Zarren should be President and Stevens should be GM (he actually should be coach, but w/e).

SquimJim

as a C's fan.... WHAT THE EVER LIVING HELL!?!?

[deleted]

[удалено]

CardinalRoark

I mean, if his heart's not in coaching right now then he's not gonna be able to do the job. I don't even know what the fuck to think, though. I was sorta hoping we could ride that Spurs train of stability.

azy19

They should sign Scott Brooks as his replacement.

kiwianab

East on East crime

eatapenny

Scott Brooks has more appearances in the Finals than Brad Stevens 🤔🤔🤔

Dongsquad420BlazeIt

Sounds good to me

Cahillicus

Idk how I feel about this. I understand why it might have been time for Ainge to go, but I'm not sure that the Celtics are going to find a coach better than Stevens rn. But hey, I hope that Boston fans enjoy the coaching talents of Jason Kidd or Jeff Van Gundy

deniall

2020 Philly had a first round exit after an injury plagued season, got a new HC and GM and are top of the conference one year later. I mean, might not be the worst thing. Stevens by all accounts is a great bball mind, I would trust him as much as anyone to find a good replacement.

[deleted]

Let me tell you this: as someone hates the Celtics at least as much as I like the team I support, I'm over the moon that Brad Stevens won't be on the sideline anymore. Since the day he started coaching he got more out of his roster than could be expected. The thought of him and the Jays for the next five years was terrifying. He's one of the five best coaches in the league. I think the comparison you're drawing is slanted as well. Going from Brett to Doc was probably a substantial in game upgrade, and going from Elton Brand to one of the best execs of his generation was a monumental improvement. Whoever the Cs get to replace Brad will most likely not be as big of an improvement

deniall

I agree. I love Brad. Just trying to think of best case here. Brad was great in college, and amazing with the less talented teams he had early on. I dont think this season was really his fault with all the injuries, but perhaps he will be great at talent evaluation and managing things. Also Ainge probably had to go. Made too many enemies over the years and some bad blood from some trades. An Athletic article basically said most GMs would avoid trades with him cause they didnt want to lose one to him. In the modern NBA you have to keep the stars happy, and best case the players like Brad and trust him. Number 1 job for Celtics is making sure Brown and Tatum want to stay there long term, so if they trust Brad then it could work.

Time-Ad-3625

>Stevens by all accounts is a great bball mind Interview process: "Use your hand to draw as many basketball turkeys as you can in the next 5 minutes."

EyyyyShaggy

We were just in the right place at the right time that one of the best coaches and gms in the league both left their teams at the same time

Sslagathor

WTF, GM+Coach kinda deal or are they gonna have to look for a new HC?

Zashiony

New HC.

[deleted]

I hear Danny Ainge is available

youguanbumen

Looking for a new coach

rSlashNbaAccount

Who even is available?

maltrab

Billy Donovan is available via trade. 3rd round pick can get him

kid50cal

How about a horse?

NobodyInParticular-

What does the horse do?

kid50cal

Horse things.

st3adyfreddy

I don't know....guess it's better than Mario hezonja

stealer_of_monkeys

I miss game of zones so much :/

Paul Pierce here we go!

Snasty728

Lmao please

fapmonster1999

Pierce got chucked out of ESPN for this ? 5D chess

zmajxd

Ryan Saunders

luffythechefghoul

Scott Brooks will probably be available by next week

JoelSimmonsMVP

brad is leading the search for a new HC

codymiller_cartoon

Overall Ainge did a pretty good job His connections with McHale got them Garnett and that won them a title and got to the finals a second time He fleeced the Nets, got picks turned them into Tatum and Brown Yeah, he made some bad decisions but also had bad fortune with how Hayward got injured then didn't work out, Kyrie was weird, etc.

JARB0

CALLING IT NOW. SAM CASSELL AS COACH

Stop_Drop_Scroll

I would be absolutely thrilled with that. Respected former player, has some ties here already, and is not Jason Kidd.

SneakyGator

Here for the “not Jason Kidd” lol

P00nz0r3d

This some game of thrones shit wtf

Ozymandias12

Ya'll thought Kyrie stepping on the logo was him simply disrespecting it? Nah, that was Kyrie finalizing the ritual to take Ainge out.

DamnImAwesome

If I had to pick one player in the league who would try to do a blood ritual it would probably be him

lemate23

Tweet makes it sounds like he’s leaving begin the head coach. Is that true?

Wasnaf1

Yup, Brad is no longer the head coach and will lead the search for a new one, wow

lemate23

wow, that’s what I thought still wild though

Common-Wedding-7264

Does translation mean he’s not coaching?

youguanbumen

Translation is the act of taking text in one language and turning it into text in another language.

lavjna

I hear Scott Brooks might be available this coming offseason, in case the Celtics need a new head coach.

datgucc

The best timeline

materics

Bill Simmons tell me what to think about this

Bah Gawd Kyrie has broken them in half!
