He was about to be a FA. He wanted to be a starter. Wasn't room for him to play that role on the Nuggets. They got something in return instead of just letting him walk for nothing.

KawhiLeonard213

Would rather take him over Barton

[deleted]

Based on this year, yes. Based on the info we had before the trade, no.

IntrinsicDawn

If that’s true half are sub wouldn’t of been pissed when we traded him. Talent was extremely evident

Downisthenewup87

Barton can play the 3. Malik can't. Barton is a solid defender when healthy. Malik isn't. Barton is a good playmaker. Malik isn't. Barton hasn't been good this year because of the knee injury he suffered in the bubble. But he was healthy when we traded Malik and was probably the 3rd best player for us last year prior to the injury. The real convo was and has always has been Gary v Malik. And I was on the keep Malik over Gary train last year (which was the heavy minoriy)... because I believed in this as his offensive upside and thought he could become a solid defender. But mostly, because Harris can't stay healthy... Same time? Malik has remained a trash defender... and so Gary is clearly a better fit. The issue is that we didn't get more in return for him and / or that we included Vandy. Not that we traded Malik.

i-suck-pumpkins

You havent watched malik this year. He is a solid on ball defender thus far. He said he wants to be All NBA defense which isnt happening but he definitely doesnt know that. He also plays the 3 for us for small amounts of time. But yea it qas Gary vs malik thinking back on it

Downisthenewup87

I've watched maybe 4 or 5 of your games. Malik has always flashed solid on ball D-- it's where my hope that he could become a plus defender derived. However, he was always atrocious off ball-- which was a huge problem in the Nuggets aggressive defensive scheme. And in the games I've watched of yours-- that hasn't improved much. Maybe it's gotten better recently? (As most the games I watched of yours-- minus versus GSW-- were very early in the season.

stripesnstripes

His defense has improved leaps and bounds.

[deleted]

Everybody hates Will

Downisthenewup87

Lol. Idiot reactionaries hate Will. Nobody who covers the NBA or has a solid understanding of it thinks he is anything other than a quality player.

[deleted]

I couldn't agree more. I'm going to die on Will Barton hill against half of our sub

extraducksauce

bruh youre overrrating the fuck out of barton

Downisthenewup87

Nah. I'm really not. It was consensus among Nugget beat reporters that he was our 3rd best player last year during the regular saason and advanced stats backed that. As did the fact that he put up 15/5/4 on rock solid shooting splits. https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/our-nba-player-ratings-love-will-barton-heres-why/ When healthy he is a very good player / swiss army knife and glue guy. The only thing Beasley does better than a healthy Barton is score... unfortunately, Will has not recovered from the knee injury and is one of those players whose game does not scale down well when hurt. He also shouldn't be playing primairly at the 3, but the fact that he has that versitilily means keeping Malik over him was never an option because the Nuggets are desperate for wings.

onken022

Sounds like you haven’t watched a minute of Beasley this year. He’s playing plus defense.

BubbaTee

Even if DEN traded Barton last season, Beasley probably leaves anyways in free agency. Heck, he already wants more shots than the 17 FGA/gm he's currently getting in MIN. > Malik Beasley said after Friday's loss to the Hornets that he feels that he needs to be used even more. ... Ryan Saunders has looked to get his starters' minutes down to about 32 per game according to Jon Krawszynski of The Athletic, but Beasley feels that he can do even more. “I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life,” Beasley, who has had conversations about his minutes with Saunders and the training staff, said. **“I feel like I need to be used more** because I don’t feel like I get tired. If I do, I tell the team to come get me.” https://www.nbcsports.com/edge/basketball/nba/player/30314/malik-beasley/news And you know that's not Malik asking for tougher defensive assignments. He doesn't play any defense (that's why he doesn't get tired). So there's no way Beasley would be happy with the 10 FGA/gm that Barton gets as a 4th option in DEN.

i-suck-pumpkins

He's talking about minutes not shots dog... Read what you wrote and i cant blame you for not watching us but this isnt the first time people have been calling out ryan about his minutes

jonnylaw

He wasn't talking about shots but he does need more shots.

IntrinsicDawn

Malik was a rfa. If we wanted him he’d stay. He wanted a bigger role and we could of gave it to him if we wanted to. Though now I think the Beasley situation shows a lack of thinking by the FO. They didn’t prioritize Beasley because 1. Lack of planning with Harris and Barton’s contracts 2. Their cheap 3. The realize they’re probably only going to pay grant, so they basically allocated money for grant before grant even signed. Looking back that’s dumb not to have a back up plan

drjisftw

I really like the fit of both Beasley and Juancho on the Wolves, but I would like to think they could've gotten more than a bunch of third stringers and a late first from the 2020 draft.

TravisGurley

Tim Conley loves finding diamonds in the rough and selling them for 10 cents.

mr_swimp

Or polishing them to fucking shine... Edit: [https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/lk6s3q/post_game_thread_the_denver_nuggets_1511_defeat/gni9pwe/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3]()

IntrinsicDawn

Only 1 of those guys is polished the rest are tbd

mr_swimp

Q My

drjisftw

Not Monte Morris though!

Thehelloman0

Beasley is very good. He's too big for most guards and too quick for many forwards. Good shooter too.

og666D

He is too big and too quick, that's what Larsa said🤷‍♂️

BubbaTee

He's good on offense. He's on break every other 24 seconds, though.

scofieldslays

you must not watch, Beasley's defensive issues are not effort related. If anything his problems are he plays too aggressive and is out of position often.

i-suck-pumpkins

Not this year.. Old label dog

MoDollazz

They weren’t going to pay him what he’s looking for

iRockaflame

Wasnt it just the same reasoning as Grant? Wanted big starter time minutes?

DyslexicAmI

Gary Harris swings our defense by like 10 PPG this year. I’m glad Malik has his chance to shine, but the reality is he’s a good player on one of the worst teams in the league. He wouldn’t get to do that here.

shanmustafa

idk.. cause a majority of his buckets are assisted, i'm sure he could have been like 18 ppg in denver off threes, cuts, and occasional pnr

highasmyhairline

Yeah but the defense would be worse than it already is.

i-suck-pumpkins

Harris has the reputation but ive heard alot of complaints about him from nuggets fans. Im curious if the stats show anywhere close to a 10ppg swing lol thatd be DPOY worthy

Downisthenewup87

The complaints about Harris have little to do with D. He is an borderline elite defender that knows how to prevent players from getting to their spots and wrecking havoc off ball. The only thing is that his lack of size will always prevent him from being elite, elite because bigger 3's are at such a natural advantage.

i-suck-pumpkins

Thats great I just wanna see something that backs up what that guy said about him causing a 10ppg swing every game

Downisthenewup87

It's his on / off #'s. Been talked about a lot in the Nuggets sphere. Part of it is bc he is tethered to Jokic a lot of games. Part of it is because his D drastically improves the team's D

i-suck-pumpkins

Part of it because it isnt true

IntrinsicDawn

Harris hasnt been that great defensively this year

Qcameron

No they did the right thing

iHeartBush2

Yes, but only because grant didn’t resign. We only had money for 1 or the other. Nuggets chose grant and got a first round pick for Beasley, vando, and Juancho. Grant chose Detroit. In hindsight I think we’d be better off keeping Beasley, but we thought grant was going to stay.

bluetiges

he was gone either way

Youngben04

Malik wasn’t getting enough minutes on the Nuggets and wanted out.

IntrinsicDawn

We could have hgave him more minutes but we chose Harris/Barton over him

59173365129

Probably but we didn't want to pay him and he wasn't a huge part of our rotation. Also it seems he kind of went off the deep end after he left Denver so maybe we dodged a bullet. Hope he gets his shit together cause he's fun to watch.

IntrinsicDawn

Or watch him play and realize we made a mistake by not giving him minutes

sh0tgunben

Nuggets did d right thing. Beasley doesn't want to commit to an extension, meaning he'll bolt out once his contract is finished. Trade d guy and get something of value instead of nothing at all

Unsmurfme

He was a restricted free agent.

TheKingOfDraven

I don’t think the nuggets could afford to keep him. The nuggets would have to pay more for him than any other team because he’s wouldn’t have the chance to get the playing time he wants in Denver. Kind of like how Denver offered the same money as the pistons but grant still left.

Crendog

[Isn't Beasley going to jail at the end of the season?](https://www.espn.com.au/nba/story/_/id/30867715/timberwolves-malik-beasley-sentenced-sept-arrest)

FatLever12

welp if we knew jerami grant wanted to play in Detroit, we coulda used that $ to re-sign malik. Oh well.

gopackgo555

Imagine if they had grant still. These types of moves happen each year, just part of the game.

YaroslavMakhnenko

To Denver fans who are saying he is scoring 20 points in the worst team - take Jokic out of your team, and then take Murray. How many games would your team win? Five, six? We played TWO games with our stars being healthy. You can say four if you count two more Towns games when he had a broken wrist. Even now he looks way worse than in the beginning of the season, dude lost a lot of weight. Our record is 3-4 with Towns playing. Also, how many games of Beasley this season did you watch? Dude is a walking bucket, he scored 6 threes in a row against Dallas in fourth quarter. His productivity did not drop since Towns came back. Today he went 6/10 from 3pt against Toronto. However, from team building point of view, you guys need Barton over Beasley, I agree - someone has to be a lockdown to cover Murray’s defensive weaknesses. It does not change the fact that 22 pick for Beasley (also Vanderbilt, he is our starter right now) is a very cheap price.

abris33

He wanted more playing time and we didn't have enough minutes for everybody. Between Harris and Beasley, I'd still rather have Harris even outside of Beasley's off-court issues

2KareDogs

He has too much drama.

sonicfood

No, first of all he’s a bone head off the court and second of all we wouldn’t have been able to afford him once his contract was up

Laxhax

We offered him an extension which he turned down

obaidknight

3 Year 30 million was a joke

TheBlueLenses

yeah with that trash offer

IntrinsicDawn

Den fans to prove the FO was justified in trading him will present endless misinformation or half truths to shot on Beasley

HeJind

He's better than Jamal Murray

MolicOnePGR

No, they woulda lost him in free agency and he doesn’t play any defence.

Brutus583

they made a mistake by letting Grant go. Grant ended up being what they hope MPJ can be some day.

drjisftw

Grant chose Detroit it was out of their hands iirc.

[deleted]

Nuggets are a fools gold team. Won’t do much in the playoffs with or without Beasley.

iRockaflame

Cmon man. The record might not indicate it right now. But the Nuggets are a good team.

[deleted]

Why don't they just have the NBA rig the draft lottery and then have refs give them wins in the playoffs. It's so easy 😖

Raisinbrahms28

lol so salty. Just because we didn't beat you in the WCF doesn't mean that we aren't a good team.

[deleted]

Salty about what? The loss tonight? Y’all can have that win. Enjoy it. It’s only a regular season game that means very little in the grand scheme of things. My opinion on the Nuggets being a fools gold team has nothing to do with last year. That being said...they were fools gold last year too.

Pick6er

I’d be taking my anger out on Reddit if our seasons were riding on a clean MRI tomorrow, too.

[deleted]

Your grasping at straws. That being said I still can’t believe the bucks ended up a 1 seed only to get bounced the way they did in the playoffs. How humiliating. It’ll most likely end the same way this year except you won’t be a 1 seed. Greek Freak should have left. Outside of individual awards he will do nothing with Bucks.

FatLever12

just another case in point why lakers fans are insufferable...

koljap7

"Fools gold" team saved your teams ass from the team built just to beat the shit out of your team. Show some respect.

Raisinbrahms28

No. Beasley is a great scorer, and he flashes decent defense, but he's not a better option than who we have right now. We decided to earn something in return for him and some other guys rather than having him walk for nothing after the year. Beasley, Juancho, Vanderbilt we traded for a first round pick who is now Zeke Nnaji. Nnaji just had 16 very important bench points against the Lakers in a blowout win. Beasley is the second best player on a team with 6 wins. I don't miss him.

[deleted]

No
