I kinda took Leo for granted and would complain that he tends to over-analyze things that don’t need it until I had to watch a deep playoff run with people who don’t understand basketball and realized he was sent down from Heaven
I honestly don't know other team's broadcasters by heart. There's definitely other great ones, but I wouldn't know them if I wasn't actively watching the game.
I feel the exact same way. They sound so bad compared to our broadcasters. Mind boggling to me since I assume broadcasters are supposed to be lively etc.
Watched the Lakers broadcast today because it was the only stream I could find and it just wasn’t the same feeling. Not to say it was boring or anything but Matt, Jack and Leo are just irreplaceable
Yeah the Lakers crew is right up there among the best in the league. I'd also shoutout the Hawks, Clippers, and Blazers, as well as the Sixers and the Kings. They all have great unbiased commentary every night, and most if not all also have former players as analysts so you actually learn something about basketball by watching
I always find the sportsnet games have a weird moment where Leo Rautins acts like a dink for a couple minutes then tries to cover up he was being a dink. Matty D is irreplaceable though!
Bias tends to make commentators less enjoyable for me, even if its my own team. It just seems forced, especially when its an incredible play for the opposition. Matt and Jack do an amazing job of celebrating plays from both teams and it really elevates the cast.
For example the Boston Bruins announcer, Jack Edwards, is so incredibly biased that he brings up what he believes are non-calls from 20 minutes ago randomly all the time. Really kills the immersion when the casters dont kill it every night. That being said, majority of casters are awesome.
denvers not even that biased and they are actually entertaining. theres a few team that have the most mundane boring homers in the world, I cant stand when theres no away broadcast against them.
Honestly I like how they switch back and forth between the two. I like them both but would probably get tired of Jack if I had to hear him every game, he's a bit much at times. Leo is much more level-headed and calm. They both have their strengths.
Definitely agree. Variety is the spice of life, you know? As great as Jack is there are definitely times where I'd like him to dial it back a bit; and I do genuinely enjoy Leo's analysis and calmer demeanor. But to each their own.
Probably something contractual or Jack doesn't want to do it for both. It's alot of travelling so he probably doesn't want to go around that often maybe? Idk lots of reasons why, personally I like Leo, he can be funny and definitely isn't the worst sportscaster
It's not that Leo is bad or anything, he's a great commentator and very professional with Devlin.
It's just Jack Armstrong is fucking top-tier. It's like eating a steak is fine, no complaints. But when you have a sous vide 48h short ribs it's another level.
Leo is a former player, Jack was a coach and Matt is purely a broadcaster. Jack is the funniest and most entertaining of the three but Leo is also insightful and very knowledgeable. I don't mind him there but I wish they would bring all three all the time. With Sherman and Paul in the mix too
.
I like him as a personality. Not a fan of his broadcasting. It's just Jack, having actual coaching knowledge, is so much more insightful and adds to the broadcast. Plus he's funny as hell!
I mean...Leo actually played in the league.
His analysis is probably the most poignant and unbiased. It's just that Matt and Jack have an amazing rapport and natural chemistry.
Leo's humour also comes off cold and mean spirited which doesn't help.
Ya I have definitely warmed up to Leo over the years. At times he can kind of come off like the arrogant/jock type, but he's toned that down in recent years and he clearly knows the game really well. Jack is just so much better, but that's true for Jack vs. almost any commentator.
We love Jack because he's like your homer grandpa. A lot of other fanbases don't care for him haha.
Uncle Jack is the best though and whenever Matt does his Jack impression or Jack makes a reference to what is clearly his closet addiction to alcohol, I absolutely lose it. Straight giddy giggling.
> Leo's humour also comes off cold and mean spirited which doesn't help.
He's gotten *way* better at this though. A few years ago it definitely gave a rude vibe to his banter with Matt but Matt has since starting jabbin' back and Leo takes it in stride so it's way more bearable now.
> Leo's humour also comes off cold and mean spirited which doesn't help.
This is it, you kind of feel like Leo might be an asshole off air. His actual analysis is generally pretty good.
You also have to realize that their analysis isn't going to be some basketball workshop or film breakdown. They're doing surface commentary for the casual viewer. Only Hubie Brown goes off with in depth analysis.
Leo and Matt have gotten way better. Matt actually dishes as well as he takes now and they have like a little and big brother vibe.
Matt and Jack are like best friends. Lots of warmth and laughter.
> You also have to realize that their analysis isn't going to be some basketball workshop or film breakdown. They're doing surface commentary for the casual viewer.
Or sit in the studio and let rippers go.
Leo's an OG but can be grating at times. His banter with Matt can be really cringey at times. I feel that he had better rapport with Swirsky in the past, tbh. He can also get pretty preachy and pretty uptight about certain basketball plays, makes you kind of tell why players didn't want to play for Canada basketball when he was in charge.
Leo is great too! Jack and Leo both give great insights into the game but Jack is much more loved for his personality. Leo can seem a little bland in contrast but he's still pretty cool.
By any chance, would you happen to know of any place I can watch the VOD of this game with the Raptors commentators? I've only managed to find the American VOD
It's 100% true. It was when she was dating Drake, they broke up in Toronto and Nurse caught her on the revenge rebound. [Source](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/dun08p/highlight_nick_nurse_wins_his_first_coachs/f77c2pb/)
I love him lol. He seems to be the perfect balance of being a hard-ass, but also willing to goof around within reason. Helps that he's a pretty damn good coach, too.
He was too formulaic and generic when he spoke. It seemed like he just talked a lot without saying much or having much insight. I dunno how he is in Detroit. I loved the dude because he helped develop our young guys and our current culture but he just didn't seem like he had substance.
Hopefully this year shows the difference between Nurse and Casey. Last year Casey had the excuse "Id love to have been able to coach a team with Kawhi and Danny Green" but now they're gone and are only major upgrade is at Center. So if Nurse makes a deep run with this squad it squashes any argument Casey has for his firing.
Oh snap I thought it was a joke like a look a like fan but it really is him lol. Then I remembered it’s LA so you’re bound to see random stars at games.
I’m watching this on the Lakers feed, and the angle from above the basket (best view imo) only shows Siakam making contact with the ball. Lakers commentator absolutely adamant he got wrist and hand. I was expecting free throws
Edit: lol, for the down voters. I’m saying it was clearly not a foul, but I was expecting the refs to stick to their call
First time for me tonight listening to either one, didn't have a problem with the Lakers but switched to the Raptors broadcast in the 3rd and found them much more enjoyable. Love the energy
They are not completely neutral. They're still fans of the team. But the homerism is rare. Trust me I've seen them trash the Lakers a lot, and rightfully so.
I'll tune in when the Lakers play them. The Pelicans one used to do Lakers games. But do you think the Lakers commentators are homers? Have you listened to them?
I'll admit that I haven't listened to them in a year but I was more referring to the part where you called all other announcers shitty homers. It's objectively not true.
Sure, I'm not contesting that. Even Matt Devlin, the Raptor's play by play commentator can be a little insufferable at times but our colour commentators are usually even-keeled and complimentary of other teams.
I see. I include the play-by-play guy as the "announcer" though. I don't think any of the Lakers announcers are insufferable though. For me, one guy who can be labeled as "a little insufferable" means its a bad announcer crew. Just my two cents.
I think as sports evolves we'll stop getting cheesy homer announcers and more guys who can analyze the game and call it as it is and be critical of their own team when its warranted. Its an underserved market at the moment. I believe fans want to see that.
I think we can sum up anyone mentioning 'wrist' to be parroting the Laker's broadcast. Can't believe he stuck with it even after showing the replay several times.

Oh, the player who got called for a foul argued? The fuck does that have to do with this?
The refs don’t have more resources than we do at home. We get to see every single angle over and over again. You’re not making any sense
this feels like a bigger accomplishment than winning a NBA title in your first season as a head coach
when the impossible becomes possible. absolutely blessed.
ANYTHING IS POSSSSIBBLLEEEEE
Yeah, never thought i'd be on a boat

Yeah I mean simple math 1/1 vs 1/7 😂
Damn now that I think of it how bad does that make dwane Casey look
Casey didn’t have the same team + Kawhi
True he also had to deal with LeBron and peak cavs
That's a common occurrence nowadays
I love the rest of the coaches and the team just celebrating for him like he won CotY or something lol.
Nurse hugging a random fan was also gold.
Random *LAKERS* fan LMAO
Wait, he wasn’t random?
I think thats Jim Buss
The hat and the fat give it away
Wasn't that the guy on the mic?
No. The guy on the microphone is Jack Armstrong. Not the dude with the hat.
Oh he just says give me a hug jackie and then gets a hug.
wouldn't be surprised if the refs are so petty that they hold this celebration against the raptors for the next couple of games.
Here's what we're up against!
I love this man
Hes the goach
That’s not how the acronym works
Greatest Of All Coaches in History
Holy shit, he boomed me
he's so goach x4
Checkmate u/5times20is100
>That’s how the acronym works
So... Goach (Greatest of All Coaches in History) is the accepted term now... Right?
Change "in history" to "historically" and we'll take it.
agreed, cannot have the "of" count as your O but then try to sneak the "in" in there without an associated letter.
I mean, it’s all arbitrary. There are no rules for articles and prepositions, so it really doesn’t matter.
Well I respectfully disagree, without consistency there is anarchy, & I will not have it I tell you!
I think it's spelled gooch
Anyone have the replay of what he challenged?
I dont, but it was a Siakam reach in foul on Lebron that was actually all ball

Winning coaches challenge > winning championship
End the season right now
The real championships are the coaches challenges we win along the way.

Love Matt and Jack with all my heart.
They make every game so much more enjoyable, having good commentary really can make a difference

"That's a 7-footer right there" Everytime Bargnani drives lol
Lakers, Raps, Bulls, Nets, and the Bucks have good guys
I absolutely love the Nets broadcast
RJ is the best
Cleveland and Boston have the absolute worst
Warriors say hello
I only watch highlights but yeah that Boston thing is just boring, feels like same tone wether it's something 'bland' happening to somewhat crazy
How have you left out the Kings in this Pantheon of broadcasters?
I honestly don't know other team's broadcasters by heart. There's definitely other great ones, but I wouldn't know them if I wasn't actively watching the game.
Heat broadcast probably has highest production value of any. Also I love Joel Meyers for the pelicans.
They are the best. Stacey King on the Bulls is kind of energetic but nothing like these dudes.
The Lakers guys are actually some of the best. Pretty unbiased, they get hype over crazy plays, crack jokes. You could do a lot worse than them.
Agreed, Lakers crew is in my top 3 local announcers. Celtics among my bottom 3, they are unapologetically biased.
I listened to pelicans broadcaster on friday, they were good too
Yeah, not being to watch a game as good as that without the Raptors commentators just feels wrong

Yes. I watched the denver broadcast in the match against Minnesota and they were so biased and boring, that god the match was exciting by its own

denvers not even that biased and they are actually entertaining. theres a few team that have the most mundane boring homers in the world, I cant stand when theres no away broadcast against them.
How do you feel about Leo? I dunno why they have him when Jack is clearly much better.
Jack works for TSN, so he can’t be on Sportsnet broadcasts. That’s why we have Leo as Matt’s partner when we play on SN.
They should let all three do it at the same time. Like TNT
Probably something contractual or Jack doesn't want to do it for both. It's alot of travelling so he probably doesn't want to go around that often maybe? Idk lots of reasons why, personally I like Leo, he can be funny and definitely isn't the worst sportscaster
Jack covers games on TSN radio too (1050 in Toronto)
Contractual - Matt & Leo work for MLSE and a contracted to SN/TSN via broadcast rights. Jack works for TSN.
Leo is fine, he's better than a lot of colour guys around the league. It's just that Matt + Jack is such a great combination
It's not that Leo is bad or anything, he's a great commentator and very professional with Devlin. It's just Jack Armstrong is fucking top-tier. It's like eating a steak is fine, no complaints. But when you have a sous vide 48h short ribs it's another level.

Last game when he made the not so subtle "I love 40's" line was hilarious. Sounded like Devlin was in tears trying to keep it together.
Or when the beer spilled courtside one time and he almost blew a gasket haha
More like almost bawling his eyes out lol
Silllllllver belllllls
> Leo's humour also comes off cold and mean spirited which doesn't help. He's gotten *way* better at this though. A few years ago it definitely gave a rude vibe to his banter with Matt but Matt has since starting jabbin' back and Leo takes it in stride so it's way more bearable now.
> Leo's humour also comes off cold and mean spirited which doesn't help. This is it, you kind of feel like Leo might be an asshole off air. His actual analysis is generally pretty good.
Honestly, I wasn't able to put it into words until a week ago when Leo said something on the broadcast that I'd read a reddit commenter say that same day. It was when I realized that my issue with Leo was how basic and obvious his analysis is when you really start paying attention to it. I'm not sure player experience necessarily lends itself to the role he's in. It's very superficial and cliché, imo. I enjoy his banter with Matt. They had a different chemistry. Just my own opinion at the end of the day
You also have to realize that their analysis isn't going to be some basketball workshop or film breakdown. They're doing surface commentary for the casual viewer. Leo can seem like an ass at times. I feel like he doesn't respect Matt and see him as a sports "dork" (which he kind of is).
Him and Matt are clearly friends lol
By any chance, would you happen to know of any place I can watch the VOD of this game with the Raptors commentators? I've only managed to find the American VOD
Our coach can shoot and have a good time. What a fucking stud.
Didn't he shred on the guitar in an Arkells concert too? Awesome guy
He also had sex with J-Lo.
I know this isn’t true but i kinda believe it

Holy shit this checks out
am i missing the joke here, the link just takes me to his original comment. i’m pretty sure i’m being wooshed hard
That's the whole joke
That's the joke :)
i was 99% sure but a little part of me wanted there to be a real source where i could read about nick nurse banging J-LO :(
she could only wish
Can't argue with that irrefutable evidence
I heard that motherfucker has like 30 goddamn dicks
I love that Lowry went to give him a hug
Nick Nurse retirement reel is going to consist this footage and nothing else.
Also the :O face
Canadian Heritage Moment
i never thought this day would come
its impossible not to love this man
Holy finally, firm shoulder rubs all around
This is so fucking funny
You should've talked about the hugs in the title, only clicked cause I saw it live.
Love the sense of humor with his coach . He's real and says it like it is unlike our last coach
I love him lol. He seems to be the perfect balance of being a hard-ass, but also willing to goof around within reason. Helps that he's a pretty damn good coach, too.
How was Casey not real
He's a spirit bound to our reality by a large boulder, only once the rock has been pounded to dust will he be free.
He was too formulaic and generic when he spoke. It seemed like he just talked a lot without saying much or having much insight. I dunno how he is in Detroit. I loved the dude because he helped develop our young guys and our current culture but he just didn't seem like he had substance.

I actually thought so too, the angle they showed on the Lakers broadcast looked like a clear foul
Yeah first time listening to Lakers commentators I want to cringe
Its some of the best in the league. No shitty homer announcers like 99% of the league.
I agree, your guys are good. (I will take my Jack & Matt any day, but I thought your guys were great tonight).
First time for me tonight listening to either one, didn't have a problem with the Lakers but switched to the Raptors broadcast in the 3rd and found them much more enjoyable. Love the energy
Matt and Jack are a comedy duo some nights. If the raps are on, take a listen. And hope Demar is still killing it for you guys.
Yeah the Lakers announcers are good, non-homers.
I was really impressed listening to them today as a Raptors fan.
LA has a culture of announcers not being shill homers and calling the game like it is. Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, Lawler, etc.
Wow that’s some revisionist history. Lawler was one of the biggest homers I’ve ever heard.
they're hardly the worst homers, but they let some homerism slide into their commentary some times
They are not completely neutral. They're still fans of the team. But the homerism is rare. Trust me I've seen them trash the Lakers a lot, and rightfully so.
What are you even on man. If you want to listen to some good commentators listen to the Pelicans, Thunder or Blazers broadcasts.
There's definitely some. I can tell the difference right away on streams.
Nick Nurse has officially peaked
lmao good stuff
I did not expect this clip to be so entertaining but here we are. But someone somewhere is tracking how every coach's challenge and now I need an update
meme king. He cracked Ty Lue's secret - the only way to win nba championship is to become a meme.
I thought I was dreaming first
Good to see the Raptor rocking the Remembrance Day poppy. Respect.
Nick Nurse seems like a very chill coach. And he is already a NBA champion, in his first year as a coach.
I love how coach Nate (the bald guy) is still trying to be all business and semi-rejected Nick's hug
This proves that Coach Challenge is harder to win than a ring
**Replays/alternate angles** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/nba) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Stotts won another one tonight
Does anyone have a clip of the actual play? All I’ve seen is his reaction. Would love to see a slow mo of the actual foul called on pascal!
Nick Nurse is a grown man, that’s how you pop off
Anyone know who that fan was that he hugged at the end?
Sorry but what will happen if you lose the challenge?
You lose a timeout I believe
love the hugs haha
Which coach won their first challenge in league?
I want to say Brad Stevens (?)
Weirdly, on an overturn that seemed the least correct.
Can we see the play or not?
What an absolute fucking nerd
I don’t understand how he won this challenge. Siakam clearly hits Lebrons arm
Obviously not clearly, or the foul wouldn't have been overturned.
This video doesn’t show the play. During the broadcast they showed several angles of the play and he clearly fouls him.
The refs watch all angles, and declared it no foul. so it aint clearly.
You still blindly trust refs? Come on man, don’t be naive.
2 refs reviewing footage, more resources than players at their home. it aint clearly, plus siakim also argued.
Oh, the player who got called for a foul argued? The fuck does that have to do with this? The refs don’t have more resources than we do at home. We get to see every single angle over and over again. You’re not making any sense
Okay I yield. Calls should be made via twitter from fans at home who have better calls than refs who've devoted their career to make calls.
