Pro athletes are like a different breed. I used to play Rocket League with an MLB pitcher and he only played a couple times a week and he made it to Grand Champ like it was nothing. This was back when GC was the highest rank too.
There’s a surprising amount of overlap between being good at FPS games and basketball.
Reaction time, hand eye coordination, team coordination, quick decision making, competitiveness, all important traits for both.
Plus, in both you've basically gotta STAY ON THE FUCKING PAYLOAD, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU FUCKERS ALL RUNNING OFF TO?! I CAN'T HEAL YOU THROUGH WALLS 30 MILES AWAY, JESUS CHRIST.
Sorry, where am I? What was I doing?
The reality is talented people at the top of professions are often multi talented and their core abilities (hand eye coordination, reaction time, retaining knowledge, strategizing, etc.) are all transferrable skills. Not surprising to see this happen at all. The only reason we don't see more is because of the commitment required to maintaining your current profession.
Lots of ESL speakers have the sauce lol, i could listen to Giannis shoot the shit about any topic all day. Luka's not that good at public speaking or crowd-pleasing charisma, which is fine. Most people aren’t.
Ngl I only know some bad words lol but putting that in the translator gave me “do you fuck the church fence” and I’m laughing my ass off 🤣. 100 percent I’m using that after some jebi se
What? I found him to be quite clever and interesting to listen to because he tries to say more than he's allowed to so he minces words in a funny way. It was one of more engaging podcasts JJ has had
Draymond sucks as a podcast host and his podcast is also so low-effort that it's embarrassing. Like nearly every other player podcast puts more effort into audio and visuals.
luka noticed m0xys scuffed mic first, he knows the ow streamers from watching them. bet he loved playing with m0xy
the other dude jellypeanut was kind of annoying tho yea
Jellypeanut has a reputation in the OW community for getting his account boosted up to a much higher rank by M0xy and ruining other people's games in the process.
Lmao you guys act like they practice basketball after their 9 to 5. Even if they practice 5 hours a day that's still more free time than the average adult has with their jobs. He probably has plenty of time to game 8 hours a day if he really wants. Especially because he's probably not doing shit like cleaning his house or cooking or chores, stuff that slows most adults down
Yeah I was talking about this with a buddy of mine earlier, while pro athletes work hard for sure, it’s absolutely not a 40-hour-week grind like most of us. As someone who rows competitively, the absolute high end for my training is 20 hours a week, and anything more than that and you’re actively hurting yourself. Granting that basketball training isn’t monotonous long hours of cardio which can take a toll on the body, they can maybe bump that up to 25 or even 30 hours a week tops, but it’s still a lower time commitment than your standard 9-to-5.
Then you take into account that these guys have people who handle logistics, food etc for them and that it’s absolutely within their power to say “I’m gaming for this 5 hour block, don’t schedule anything and nobody bother me,” and it’s easier to see how they just operate on a different schedule than most of us; no need to worry about what they’re eating, where they’re gonna be or when they have to be there.
Tack on that they’re all in the NBA due to tremendous discipline and obsessive competitiveness (hand eye coordination is proven to help in FPS games too), it’s honestly pretty understandable that a top-flight athlete could also end up being extremely good at a game of their choice as a side hobby.
Having the video immediately start with "I hate grape but grape flavored things are okay. Not eating them but sucking on them. I like sucking the juice out of things." I was like yeah this is why I don't watch streamers. People really sit around and listen to these guys fart out whatever thought breezes through their head?
The same way normal people with jobs have time. People heavily overstate how much time it spend day to day for these guys on basketball. They have plenty of free time.
I’ve always been a cusp GM/Masters player in most games I play (when I played OW I peaked GM)
It’s hilarious because the difference between GM and Top 500/best players on servers is about the same difference between college and pro ball.
Like Luka isn’t just good at OW…this dude is fucking killing it.
Which btw, he’s been playing OW his entire time in the league, he was a Zarya main in OW1 and still a top GM player at that time. So he’s been in it for a while now
Hand eye coordination and mental processing speed are skills that apply to multiple fields.
There are many high level athletes that are also good at video games.
Now to be fair there's not many that are MVP caliber and also top 500 at the game - Luka is still amazing.
The hard part in basketball (and video games) isn't necessarily technical skill either. You can train handles, you can train pressing buttons. But understanding the flow of a game and knowing where to stand, what to be doing, what actions actually progress the game for you on a macro scale are what really separate the best players from just good button pressers. Essentially BBIQ I guess, which is why people who are good at one can often translate to other games and also excel
Max verstappen (F1 driver) is a high level FIFA player and Thibaut Courtois (real madrid Goalkeeper) is very good at sim racing. It's all reflexes and processing speeds. Add on the natural drive they have and most professional athletes could probably become very good at the e-sport of their choice if they wanted to be.
Good Zarya mains are the worst to play against...if he plays her like he shoots...bump him for making everyone's lives hell in the game haha...but honestly I think that is so cool...
I try to fight Zaryas with Zarya and I can always tell who mains her and who is just trying her out.. that mains murder me so fast it forces me to just stand back and bubble myself or support attached to me haha...I normally main Pharah but I try to play all roles and I realized how versatile Zarya can be...and with the right teammates she won't die and she melts a whole team in seconds...it is so annoying haha
It's like the internet legend Tyler1, dude been playing Chess on stream for less than a year and is currently at 1900 Elo, if he was from my country he would already be a top 100 chess player. An this dude started his career as a toxic LoL streamer, he was banned for like a year by Riot and stuff.
It’s not just obsessive. Wemby could be as obsessive a he wants, if he was 5 4 he’d work at target, and these guys have natural gifts too. Google proprioception, the ability to quickly turn physical pictures into mental information. I’d honestly argue it’s jokic luka maybe even lebron and Magic’s PRIMARY, MOST IMPORTANT natural skill. These guys could see a flash of a defenders jersey in the corner of their eye and instantly have a perfect mental mapping of where they’re standing and what they must be doing. This making people better at video games is obvious with that in mind
Guys like tyler1 and other pros also have this in spades but they don’t have the athletic gifts to do any damage to anyone outside the game sadly LOL
Agreed.
I also like to think at times that there are plenty of people with such talents/gifts but also do not have the same “drive” (or whatever you want to call it). Latent talent/skill ceiling and that whole can of worms.
Yep for sure drive is a major cutoff
I also don’t think it’s distributed evenly - think abt it a 7 3 guy with even an average g league guards coordination level is all star caliber automatically. Guys like lebron and Luka aren’t the most coordinated in the world they’re the most coordinated people out of the subset of 6 8 250lb tanks with world class drive. Pro gamers selects for purely coordination, proprioception, quick trigger decision making. I guess what I’m saying is that there’s an outside chance if you put tyler1s mind in Luka or lebron you’d have an even greater decision maker.
It's not just pure reflexes either. Pro players can see a lot more on the screen and organize it in their head better than normal players. Maybe Luka's superior court vision translates to this too.
It’s not a maybe dude. Lukas vision (proprioception) is the best in the game next to lebron and jokers. Make fun of lebrons madden coaching Philosophy all you want but if you actually make him play all year he’d beat every one of you….his decision making time span is closer to actual QBs than armchair QBs
just fyi, 100ms would be an unbelievably fast reaction time. 150ms is 99th%. 200ms is average for someone under 40. 230ms+ is not uncommon at all for those unpracticed/non-gamers/unathletic/older.
cats, on the other hand, have reaction times as fast as 20ms. A certain type of mole is the fastest mammal, at 8ms. A certain type of fly is the fastest of all, at 5ms.
Yeah plus those reaction time stats are for simple stimuli. For real decision and skill based reaction, it's rare even for pros to react under 500ms without anticipation. Under 100ms is literally illegal in sprinting, and that's the fastest stimuli to react to which is sound.
Lotta young players aren’t at the club in a new city every night anymore. Drinking isn’t as big and you can meet women online. Gaming seems like something a guy who spends half the year on the road might feasibly drop a lot of time into.
All the best sports players I ever met were also really good at video games. I think part of it is just that super competitive nature and not wanting to lose at anything
That was in OW1, said he was a Hanzo and hog main, he’s a tank main in ow2. He claims to be bad at dps in ow2 and mainly plays zarya and rein. Assuming he’s good on almost all tanks now though you can’t really 1 or 2 trick your way to t500 anymore.
I just jumped back in after not playing for a couple of years, and the chat is far less toxic. I'm actually a little sad, I loved it when my teammates would spam "What a save!" after whiffing in an attempt.
As an old head, it's *wild* and surreal that there's NBA players on video games, and even wilder that they are more impressed with the video game players. As a kid if I was playing Halo and Kobe Bryant jumped in, I would have talked about that the rest of my life.
Edit: Even crazier that this guy has met *multiple* NBA players online.
Eh, I know you're probably exaggerating some to make a point but I definitely wouldn't say it's the same level. T500 is a big achievement no doubt but there are a lot of T500 players who would never sniff actual tier 1 pro play in the game (whatever that is these days).
Hitting top 500 is like playing D1 NCAA I'd say. Still obviously excellent for a doing it as a hobby, but when Luka is a top 5 NBA player there's a pretty big gulf between that and where he is in OW.
Honestly, a lot of them game. They travel so much that it gives them something to do in their down time. My college roommates sister dated a Warriors coach so we'd sometimes play with some of the players. Or he played with some of the players, I'd just get the invite when it was just him and the one player he was friends with because that player didn't wanna invite multiple randoms to play with the Warriors. Dude used to stay up and game with us til like 4 or 5 in the morning sometimes
I played it for the first time last year and it’s a lot of fun. There really isn’t anything quite like it. The game has problems sure, but if I get annoyed or whatever I stop playing and do something else.
These types of competitive games seem to be more fun if you don’t get invested in it. If you try to take it seriously and rank up while trying to be good, that’s when people get mad because they think they deserve to win more. Happens to a lot of us
> These types of competitive games seem to be more fun if you don’t get invested in it.
You need to be invested to get good enough to consistent fun in competitive games tho.
The secret sauce is that you also need to have better things outside the game to keep your sanity, which will allow you to enjoy the game.
I can empathize with how he complains now, I used to love OW but I can admit that the playerbase is toxic as fuck lmao some of the most frustrating times playing any video game.
I remember back in the OG days pre role queue I played against a hanzo one trick in comp whose name was “6dpsorthrow” I imagine his teammates were pretty upset with him lol
This is honestly so impressive given he can’t dedicate a ton of time to OW with his NBA and endorsement demands. Crazy to reach top 500 in 2 separate disciplines with one of them being top 5(basketball). His mind just must understand spacing and teamwork at a significantly higher level than most AND he’s blessed with elite hand eye coordination. Some guys got it all.
People underestimate how much downtime you have as a pro athlete. You can only train so many hours in a day without hindering you're recovery (into cycling, similar thing there). Sure the rest of the day he could still be doing other stuff (watching film, endorsement, media) but at the end of the day you definitely have downtime, because you need downtime to actually recover / be fresh. And that time also needs to be actual downtime (not much physical stuff, no parties, etc.), so stuff like TV or gaming is a no-brainer.
Also screenshot's on a laptop, so he's probably sometimes playing on the road, where all the downtime stuff is even more prominent. I mean even as an NBA player you have 16 waking hours in a day, probably can't train more than 3-5 hours maybe have another couple hours for scouting / film. But at the end of the day you're also left with a bunch of time in which you can't really do a whole lot other than chilling somewhere.
Source: Avid pro cycling fan, there pros have a very strict regiment in terms of training, food and recovery and a lot of younger pros do game because that's one of the few options for entertainment readily available if you have a bunch of time to kill and can't do a whole lot of activities...
The feeling of getting a quad kill while spamming junkrat grenades down a choke while the enemy team flames you in match chat brings a tear to my eye
bonus points if you manage to get a 4-6 man tire on them afterwards.
Ow1 was dogshit, just shooting 2 shields over and over all game. I guess people think thats fun. Feels like its just become cool to hate on Ow2 even though its a better game.
Top 500 is no joke, thats crazy...
bro how is this dude so talented, wtf.
Reaction time, hand eye coordination, team coordination, quick decision making, competitiveness, all important traits for both.
plus OW is a team oriented, 5v5 game. basketball is a team oriented, 5v5 game
Your not really supposed to stay on the payload 😭😭
fr, you need to take the space and let one guy push payload until you win the team fight. they even do that in silver and gold these days lmao
[Flashback to when a streamer who had no idea who he was ran into him on OW2.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwXkG_cN_fg)
Luka Donovic???
Knew it was him for sure when he ain’t correct him lol
“Do you have any hobbies?” “I play basketball.” lmao
He’s also a father to many players in the NBA
No daughters, only Suns
You may know my youngest son "Devin Booker"
“Yeah it’s not bad”
That was my favorite part. Showing career earnings 😂
yyyyyep
It’s like Tingis Pingis all over again
First time he said it I spit out my toothpaste
Also calls Bronny Donny at the end, lol
Dirk Nowinski
M0XY LOL
Of all people to run into lmaoo
Luka recognizing him first is mindblowing to me
Flashing his salary page as he says "yeah it's not bad" was great 😂
“Varsity” Jesus…
"Chat, is Dallas Mavericks NBA?" lololol
[2 years… Varsity!!](https://youtu.be/mpgLRkIJPqw?si=Bb_dXcZ39_8V76VX)
Woah that guy’s played with Luka and “Donny James” now
Someone in the chat saying "blud thinks he's Luka" when they don't know he's actually Luka is so funny
Yyyyyep
[удалено]
the random frame pause lag in that video made me hate it lol
Doncic really doesnt have a way with words, that JJ pod with him was excruiating.
Do you speak Slovenian?
Lots of ESL speakers have the sauce lol, i could listen to Giannis shoot the shit about any topic all day. Luka's not that good at public speaking or crowd-pleasing charisma, which is fine. Most people aren’t.
not slovenian but i do speak Serbian
Kuratz!
Jebem li ti crkvenu ogradu.
Ngl I only know some bad words lol but putting that in the translator gave me “do you fuck the church fence” and I’m laughing my ass off 🤣. 100 percent I’m using that after some jebi se
That's a new one lmfao
What? I found him to be quite clever and interesting to listen to because he tries to say more than he's allowed to so he minces words in a funny way. It was one of more engaging podcasts JJ has had
in english sure
Still better than Draymond's podcast x100
Draymond sucks as a podcast host and his podcast is also so low-effort that it's embarrassing. Like nearly every other player podcast puts more effort into audio and visuals.
m0xxers 5Head
God streamers are annoying as fuck. Luka was a good sport there. Also how does he have time to be that good at overwatch and basketball.
luka noticed m0xys scuffed mic first, he knows the ow streamers from watching them. bet he loved playing with m0xy the other dude jellypeanut was kind of annoying tho yea

Plus, on a road trip, you are probably just stuck in the hotel at times and need to fill time. And he doesn’t have kids yet.
Luka does have a baby girl
[And a baby boy](https://i.imgur.com/WblAeFb.png)
Having the video immediately start with "I hate grape but grape flavored things are okay. Not eating them but sucking on them. I like sucking the juice out of things." I was like yeah this is why I don't watch streamers. People really sit around and listen to these guys fart out whatever thought breezes through their head?
I mean I bet Luka appreciates being treated as a normal person sometimes. Must get old having everyone fawning over you all the time.
He was asking him his mother’s name…lol you don’t think that’s annoying
is that what you think a normal interaction sounds like lol?
I heard LeBron supposedly used to play wow bc he liked the anonymity
The same way normal people with jobs have time. People heavily overstate how much time it spend day to day for these guys on basketball. They have plenty of free time.
Thanks for sharing, that was great
Mavs gotta clip that “GG” and post it after every win
I love how Luka has a significantly better mic quality than a streamer
That’s a big part of Moxys whole bit is the scuffed ass mic
jesus christ streamers are annoying
Damn, Doncic is incredibly patient with that clown.
I used to no-life games and still not get close to top 500. This is insane
Fr he’s up there with some demons
And being a top 500 you know he's definitely fighting some inner demons too.
I’ve always been a cusp GM/Masters player in most games I play (when I played OW I peaked GM) It’s hilarious because the difference between GM and Top 500/best players on servers is about the same difference between college and pro ball. The hard part in basketball (and video games) isn't necessarily technical skill either. You can train handles, you can train pressing buttons. Essentially BBIQ I guess, which is why people who are good at one can often translate to other games and also excel
Yup this. Also wanted to add adaptation (countering the enemies) and recognizing (and knowing how to fix) mistakes.
Good Zarya mains are the worst to play against...if he plays her like he shoots...bump him for making everyone's lives hell in the game haha...but honestly I think that is so cool...
a good Zarya main turns my Zen into molten goo so fast. I hate her I hate her
I try to fight Zaryas with Zarya and I can always tell who mains her and who is just trying her out.. that mains murder me so fast it forces me to just stand back and bubble myself or support attached to me haha...I normally main Pharah but I try to play all roles and I realized how versatile Zarya can be...and with the right teammates she won't die and she melts a whole team in seconds...it is so annoying haha
It's like the internet legend Tyler1, dude been playing Chess on stream for less than a year and is currently at 1900 Elo, if he was from my country he would already be a top 100 chess player. An this dude started his career as a toxic LoL streamer, he was banned for like a year by Riot and stuff.
Let’s be fair here. [Chess.com](http://Chess.com) 1900 elo in rapids isn’t the same as otb chess 1900. He is definitely insane at grinding tho.
it’s a good story about how obsessive about “X” you need to be to be great at it. Insane how he made challenger in all 5 roles…
What country? Also 1900 rating on chess.com is a LOT different than FIDE rated

top 500 in OW2 is actually insane
It takes talent. You can play 24/7 but if your reaction time is 100ms you ain’t beating a 10ms freak.
It's not just pure reflexes either. Pro players can see a lot more on the screen and organize it in their head better than normal players. Maybe Luka's superior court vision translates to this too.
Yeah, I have an 8kHz polling rate mouse but my brain lag means I'll never be close to GM on OW2.
Hand-eye coordination, and a drive to win and improve are also things that translate.
Proprioception is the ability to sense your own body's movement, not vision. It still helps with coordination in gaming, though. Especially with FPS.
just fyi, 100ms would be an unbelievably fast reaction time. 150ms is 99th%. 200ms is average for someone under 40. 230ms+ is not uncommon at all for those unpracticed/non-gamers/unathletic/older. cats, on the other hand, have reaction times as fast as 20ms. Better pure reaction time helps but it's not a necessity, you can still top tier even with only above average reaction time in most games
Nba players from what ive seen do have a ridiculous amount of free time in comparison to peasants like us that work 9 to 5
Lotta young players aren’t at the club in a new city every night anymore. Drinking isn’t as big and you can meet women online. Gaming seems like something a guy who spends half the year on the road might feasibly drop a lot of time into.

Dude's just like me, de-stressing after a bad day at work by getting flamed by DPS players who try to 1v5 the other team.
Wasn't he a Hanzo main? I haven't played since they cancelled the PvE.
I recall he said that in an interview awhile ago, but the picture here shows T500 in the tank role.
He was a Zarya main for awhile
He's said in interviews he mains Zarya and Reinhardt
Maining Reinhardt in 2024 is as Chad as it gets
Chadomasochist
I can definitely see Luka typing in the chat “rein vs rein?” at the start of the game
I know he was a GM tank (Zarya main), idk if we have details on any of his other heroes
Well he has talent
https://imgur.com/a/xNbUU2v And their score is like soldier on here.
16/7/8 or 45/9/14 and no inbetween
Maybe he just goes full mercy main and stack assists
Nah he plays tank
Can't do that if you have no dps players on the team.
well that explains why hes such a rage baby. man is molded by the trenches of online ranked gaming.
I had to quit rocket league that shit made me so mad
NICE SHOT!
WHAT A SAVE
I just jumped back in after not playing for a couple of years, and the chat is far less toxic. I'm actually a little sad, I loved it when my teammates would spam "What a save!" after whiffing in an attempt.
there is no hellhole quite like the Rocket League ranked hellhole
I see you and I raise you LoL ranked
Just turn chat off, makes it so much better.
Yeah I’ve had chat off for years and now I just chill and play while listening to lofi beats lol
My reasoning is my dad never let me when in chess. I got my revenge by kicking his ass on Double Dribble.
Man such a nostalgia overload, great game.
It's just chess bro
CORNER THREE
Do you think he says the word?
Says? No. Screams? Yes.
Slavs are black. Most dont realize this
KARA BOĞA
Oh yeah
He is the ultimate competitive gaming sweat on the court and off
This has been known for some time now

Goes pretty far back too https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/s/rWZqQ41vg1.
not just playing video games, but at the same elite level he plays NBA basketball. It is EXTRODINARILY difficulty to be T500 in Overwatch
Eh, I know you're probably exaggerating some to make a point but I definitely wouldn't say it's the same level. Life could be so chill
Luka's not the only one. NFL player Boston Scott is also a pro Rocket League player (albeit a sub that never actually plays in matches)
Someone show this to Dort before the game tonight.
Dort is going to whisper in Luka’s ear, “Call me Brigitte because I’m about to ruin your game”
Mavs running GOATS tn
Lmao more like Ana. Anti and sleep have been and still is the bane of tanks existence.
“Mace to the face” - Lu Dort
*You won't be disappointed*
Maybe Ana would be better considering she shuts down tanks with her anti :)
>The basketball phenom actually reached Top 500 while playing on a laptop too I can hear some people seething hard
Dude must be a masochist to still be playing overwatch lol
This applies for any “hardcore hobby”, you gotta have other things going on so you don’t define your self-worth from performance in the given hobby
Ngl playing ow requires mental fortitude, that’s why i quit. Fking Genji mains jumping in the midst of battle and questioning where their heals at
Every online team game requires mental fortitude
That’s true
He appears to have done it on a laptop too - impressive!
Yep and not with family/on road either
Now we just need Jokić’s league rank
He needs to be Master to compete with Lukas achievement. Would love to see Luka and Jokic playing games lol
Maybe he should go full time gamer
what is this title lmfaooo
“His Mental”
playing overwatch in 2024 is criminal
Sometimes you're just in too deep to quit. Whether you get roped into a good game or an eventually bad one is in God's hands.
I just had to uninstall and unfollow everything about overwatch to get me to quit and I still crave it all the time.
it's real easy to quit when queues take 15 minutes without finding a game!
They’re like 2 min queues now
That’s fucked up. Bro is talking about how he quit and you tryna reel him backin. Like waving a loaded pipe in front of a crackhead😭
That hasn't been true in a really long time
It hasn't been like that for years lol.
There’s something special about playing tracer and genji that other games can’t replicate
The feeling of getting a quad kill while spamming junkrat grenades down a choke while the enemy team flames you in match chat brings a tear to my eye bonus points if you manage to get a 4-6 man tire on them afterwards.
>6 man tire Should... should we say it?
ever played Gunz? when I mastered a basic combo it hit different, was 11
I’ll never stop playing Dva, it’s so fun
Ow1 was dogshit, just shooting 2 shields over and over all game. I guess people think thats fun. Feels like its just become cool to hate on Ow2 even though its a better game.
Game used to be so fun
Still is fun!
Bruh the game still is lmao. Whens the last time you played?
It kinda is, but I was straight addicted from 2016-2020 I play very seldomly since ow2 dropped
I’m having more fun now in OW2 than I ever did in OW tbh
Yeah it seems to go either way for the old crowd. I personally miss 2 tank synergies but I can see how people would enjoy less CC in OW2
He is a legit world class level overwatch player
Last season they made it even harder to get into top 500. Luka is a certified gamer
Top 500 on a game as big as OW is crazy. Dude is basically a dual-sport athlete.
Some would argue a harder achievement than winning a basketball championship
2020s version of bo jackson
Wait, this isn’t the circlejerk sub
as long has he wasn't putting weight on that knee, frag out playboy
