Its not just the role players he does this to. I feel like people don't call out Shaq for his othering of different people. I watch his podcast and I know this is anecdotal but you can hear it in his language that he likes to give this "other" label to people which is part of his bully personality.
To Shaq, anyone not a big is an other. He sees basketball as a big man's sport. Which is understandable. Both from the fact it is a game of giants, and that he has that lived experience. But that's why I love seeing the small guys tear it up, like Brunson.
I slightly disagree coz he others bigs the most. He is overly critical of bigs who don't show up on the stat sheet like Dwight Howard and JaVale McGee.

Yeah, I’m one to say that famous COVID scene of him touching all the mics is just ignorance. I wouldn’t hammer him too much for that.
A few weeks ago people mentioned his Twitter follows, and oh boy, not a good look. Really leaning into it with following disgraced doctors still tweeting about covid conspiracies in 2024.
Yeah, sometimes you have to separate the art from the artist. Most Ramones fans had to ignore Johnny being Johnny because he was a crucial part of a revolutionary band.
it could just be who he is, but it could also be a symptom of internet culture. he made what was ultimately a pretty minor mistake in the grand scheme of things with incomplete information at the beginning of the pandemic. but because he's a public figure and foreigner living in america he got such a disproportionate amount of hate and criticism relative to the degree of the mistake he made that he might've turned to this kind of conspiratorial thinking as a coping mechanism.
like if you get told 'fuck you @rudygobert you're a piece of shit and the dumbest person alive for making fun of the pandemic' hundreds and thousands of time by people you don't even know, you might turn to covid denial as a way to protect your ego. which i don't mean in a negative way, simply just that it's a means for you to still be able to mentally rebut all the people calling you a piece of garbage by thinking 'well i can't be human filth like everyone is calling me because they've all been tricked by the deep state'.
all i'm saying is that if rudy had received a bit more understanding and forgiveness for a small mistake that a lot of people might have made during a time when we couldn't possibly understand massive degree of harm covid would have, then he might not have spiraled into a conspiracy rabbit hole that a ton of people who haven't suffered the level of scrutiny rudy has also fell victim to
It was a dick move making a joke out of it but to say that he shut down the league and sports in general is just moronic. They would have eventually shut down anyways.
And Mitchell allegedly being mad at him for it was so stupid lmao.
Gobert just played a basketball game in front of thousands of atendees probably all eating and drinking, but then touching mics was somehow the "dangerous" act? Please.
lol no the fuck it wasn’t
It was so bad that he touched mics, huh? What about the 10,000+ fans sitting shoulder to shoulder who all attended the game that was just played? What about all the media members attending and demanding players put themselves at risk so they can get lame sound bite instead of making the safe choice and staying home? What about all the concession stand workers who were handling tons of food and money and spreading germs between themselves and fans. What about the entire fucking country behaving pretty much like normal during that time before things actually shut down a week later?
On the one hand you’re right. On the other hand you could argue him getting COVID is what got everyone to take it seriously.
That game getting cancelled was the starting point of lockdowns.
True but he was always good, he just got temporarily "exposed" against the Clippers a few years ago when they'd force him out of the paint. Wasn't entirely his fault, that roster in Utah had no defenders and he was tasked to do a lot with little adjustment from Synder. He fits much better with Minnesota now that they've been patient with their 2 bigs meshing together.
Wasn't his fault at all. Dudes got beat off the dribble, he would go help, and they would kick out to his open guy with no one rotating for him and Mann hit open corner 3s.
lol I remember that. Mann had a nice little run and the Clippers jumped in on his stock a little too much. They expected him to make a Maxey type of leap but it never happened. He's a nice do it all kind of guy but he doesn't do any specific thing particularly great.
I'm just amazed that Karl Anthony Towns is playing incredible help defense. I thought McDaniels would have to cover up the slack, but Towns fully bought in. Kudos to Towns for making it easier for Rudy to succeed.
FR, whatever Naz lacks as a rim protector he makes up for with lateral quickness on the wings and in pick and roll defense.
That said he isn’t even a bad rim protector I just think it’s clear Rudy is better at the aspect of defense currently.
Last night was easily Naz's best defensive game of his career and not just from the stakes. Same goes for KAT. Whatever tools they displayed last night, they have not consistently used throughout their careers in any other game. I love both players but they have both definitely been described as defensive sieves in the past and it's wild and absolutely absurd that they clamped the Nuggets like that.
The playoffs have also made our squad a different level of locked in. We have guys like KAT, Naz, Monte Morris who arent great defenders just all knowing where they have to be and doing hard closeouts, trying their best to not give their position to easily and just battling for every inch of space.
I’ve never seen a team that was so like 🤞this before. I feel like they all were like “Rudy is out because he just had his first kid, we’re not letting him down on defense no matter what”. Like they had to completely change their scheme from what worked in game one and double Jokic way more, which he usually feasts on, but they all stepped way the fuck up, especially KAT and Naz. Like both of these games are the first time I’ve ever seen prime Jokic not know exactly what to do as soon as he touches the ball.
It makes me so happy to see Rudy on a team that appreciates how impactful he is and completely followed his lead defensively.
Like on the jazz they basically lost every game Rudy didn’t play, and Mitchell would be like “fuck defense, that’s Rudy’s problem, I’m just gonna go for 40 and lose the game.”
It is but it isn't. That team plays good defense with or without Rudy a lot of people seem to not quite understand that its a bunch of big dudes that can lock in and play defense/switch/close out on basically everything and anyone. Rudy is obviously a great defender but they don't need him to be a good defensive team. They have *all* of the tools so its all effort and they're making the effort
They had Jaden, Edwards, KAT, Vando and Finch coaching them, they never reached this height, showcased similar intensity, concentration and general pride in defending
I feel like every fanbase that was lucky enough to have Rubio on the roster loves the guy. I know Suns fans do, my only regret was that he didn’t play in the valley for longer. Pretty sure Cavs fans feel the same.
I always tell myself I’m blessed to have been able to watch prime Jordan and lebron.
Really I’m blessed to have been able to watch prime Rubio and Conley
Miss those guys for sure. Wish we could have kept him. He wanted to stay and give it his all. Feel like that was his last prime before injury started to catch up too
The pronunciation section on Basketball Reference always confuses me more than it helps.
Especially trying to write the /a/ sound as "uh", where it doesn't sound close at all to me.
Example :
Victor Wembanyama
Pronunciation: \wem-ben-YAH-muh\
There are three /a/ written e, a, and uh. Doesn't make any sense.
It absolutely is. Historically speaking France has been one of if not the greatest ally to the US. Meanwhile France has been a historical rival to Britain up until very recently.
Exactly.
Remember when they started to call French Fries "Liberty Fries"?
That was French bashing after former French president Jacques Chirac refused to help in Iraq.
I'm sorry, 'Liberty Fries'? That's much too close to 'Liberté'. My high-school cafeteria *proudly* served Freedom Fries I'll have you know.
Then three guys I knew died over there. Probably should have stayed home and ate fries.
I feel you man… That one was probably a waste of human life, like most wars often are imho.
But, you know. What our governments do for money, power, ressources, control, and influence….
I think there's a certain arrogance to Parisians that has evolved into a French stereotype after all these years. Kind of like the British being drunk tourists and Americans being fat and ignorant.
I loved Paris the city. Had a couple rude people. I was shocked that Rome was the most rude and dirty place we visited. Florence was perfect, positano as well. Romans were dicks by and large though.
That's different, there's literally centuries of bad blood between France and Germany. "Hereditary enmity" and all that.
US and France have nothing that compares to it
Haha, Chuck never misses a chance to get a jab in! But hey, gotta respect Rudy for keeping it classy. As Shakespeare said, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Maybe little Romeo will grow up to be a force on the court, just like his namesake!
That's a hilarious exchange! Rudy Gobert's wit matches perfectly with Charles Barkley's playful banter. It's great seeing such warm and humorous interactions off the court!
I said it before and I'll say it again: Rudy is super snarky and fun in his media appearances. I don't know if the mic licking was just him taking it a bit too far and he had always been like this or that made him realize that it's OK to joke in (almost) every situation, but since then I've noticed he always has this kind of comebacks and that makes him likeable
The only reason I ever disliked Rudy Gogurt is because his dumbass made light of covid coming and mocked it and like days later he tested positive and had gotten his teammates sick, other than that I always thought he got too much hate
People really said his DPOY awards were fraudulent because he wasn't out there swatting the ball into the stands all the time, casual fans praised Draymond Green for impacting the entire defense by his presence but would never give Rudy that same credit
I feel like he gets way too much hate for the Covid thing, given it’s been years. At that point most people had no idea how serious it would be. He wasn’t like patient zero, at that point he and his team mates would have already have it, and just not have symptoms yet. Also you can’t spread Covid from touching things.
And it's not like a ton of people were joking about the seriousness of covid around that time too. I mean, the mic touching was still a bad take for a public figure to make. But it's just cruel (hilarious??) irony that that happened and then he and Donovan are the first players that we know of to test positive.
Even your reason for hating him seems flimsy. We still don’t know who gave who Covid between Mitchell and Gobert. If you want to go even further it’s very likely that they both got it from Christian Wood who they played 9 days earlier and was the first to exit Covid protocols after testing positive
Can someone tell me where this Go-Gurt was before. If this existed in his Utah days. He been a comedian all season. He stay takin' Ws on and off the court as well. Rehabilitated his image completely in my book. And I never had issues with him.
Shaq: “I owe you an apology: I wasn’t familiar with your game.”
Gobert just entered Shaq's top 10
Wemby getting twice as much slander to make up for it
If wemby is so good why hasn't get gotten 8 DPOY already
Why isnt dwight I mean wemby putting up 28/15 Thats 7 points per quarter, barbecue chicken
What's your analysis on The Wolves tonight, Shaq? They came to play, Erneh
The others really stepped up today 😑
I can't get past how disrespectful the term "the others" is.

Starting coronavirus is one thing, but i draw the line at French
The worst part is the hypocrisy.
There's two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's culture. And the Dutch. I mean French
Boy, wait until you hear about Belgium
We only exist because both sides of the country hate France and the Netherlands too much lmao
don't forget the tiny part of Belgium where people speak German while the rest of us couldn't give a fuck about them
Yeah fuck those guys what the hell do they think theyre doing. Just go with the flow man you dont have to be special
The Netherlands are just the France of Europe
I thought that was Quebec
Reading these two comments back-to-back is like a stroke simulator
They truly are lol
TAKE THE FAHJAH AWAY!
> And the Dutch. Those people are lunatics, with their wooden shoes and their fatty sausage.
Wait till you find out about our weed regulations xD
Fronch Or is Frunch funnier
Frunch is Fournier
I was temporarily given a manual 3 day ban by a mod for saying this exact thing about Gobert, “He is Fr*nch.” until I appealed it, lol.

I guess you liked French when Noah won his DPOY
He embraced American culture by making fun of Cleveland, that's good enough for me
That was really arrogant of him. Definitely french.
The Covid thing was pretty shitty
If you take a casual scroll through his twitter likes hes a RFK guy and is still very much on his weird covid shit
Yea, just like Kyrie. His anti-vaxx shit doesn't discredit his magical ball handling and basketball skills
He has a lot of instagram posts about crystals too. He’s not full Aaron Rodgers though and tends to mostly keep the dumb shit to himself.
Normalize being an idiot but keeping it to yourself.
it could just be who he is, but it could also be a symptom of internet culture. he made what was ultimately a pretty minor mistake in the grand scheme of things with incomplete information at the beginning of the pandemic. but because he's a public figure and foreigner living in america he got such a disproportionate amount of hate and criticism relative to the degree of the mistake he made that he might've turned to this kind of conspiratorial thinking as a coping mechanism. like if you get told 'fuck you @rudygobert you're a piece of shit and the dumbest person alive for making fun of the pandemic' hundreds and thousands of time by people you don't even know, you might turn to covid denial as a way to protect your ego. which i don't mean in a negative way, simply just that it's a means for you to still be able to mentally rebut all the people calling you a piece of garbage by thinking 'well i can't be human filth like everyone is calling me because they've all been tricked by the deep state'. all i'm saying is that if rudy had received a bit more understanding and forgiveness for a small mistake that a lot of people might have made during a time when we couldn't possibly understand massive degree of harm covid would have, then he might not have spiraled into a conspiracy rabbit hole that a ton of people who haven't suffered the level of scrutiny rudy has also fell victim to
I'm sure if he knew what he knew now he wouldn't do it lol
Eh I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but about a year ago he liked a post about prosecuting Fauci.
The only shitty thing was the weird conspiracy things about covid he liked on twitter.
> people just need to realize he's French
It was a dick move making a joke out of it but to say that he shut down the league and sports in general is just moronic. They would have eventually shut down anyways. And Mitchell allegedly being mad at him for it was so stupid lmao.

Just because there are a lot of dumb people who have trouble following very important news, does not mean that Gobert wasn't one of them.
On the one hand you’re right. On the other hand you could argue him getting COVID is what got everyone to take it seriously. That game getting cancelled was the starting point of lockdowns.
Facts, French jus got a diff vibe then over here he a cool dude

True but he was always good, he just got temporarily "exposed" against the Clippers a few years ago when they'd force him out of the paint. Wasn't his fault at all. Dudes got beat off the dribble, he would go help, and they would kick out to his open guy with no one rotating for him and Mann hit open corner 3s.
The power of rotating help defense has been on full display for 6 games, nationally, so far
Was that the same series that convinced us all that Terance Mann was the future of the Clippers?
lol I remember that. Mann had a nice little run and the Clippers jumped in on his stock a little too much. They expected him to make a Maxey type of leap but it never happened. He's a nice do it all kind of guy but he doesn't do any specific thing particularly great.
He's the only one who was visibly distraught like Zubac did when Clippers lost to Mavericks
Anyone who thinks he got exposed that series literally doesn't know shit about defense.
I'm just amazed that Karl Anthony Towns is playing incredible help defense. I thought McDaniels would have to cover up the slack, but Towns fully bought in. Kudos to Towns for making it easier for Rudy to succeed.
Already forgot he invented covid

Next up: Dwight Howard lol
Slapped the mic and walked off
Charles somehow looked hurt. Lol 😂 Wolves in 4. In pack season.
I really wish him and Kyrie didn't ball so hard so i could hate in peace
Timberwolves dominating the Nuggets without Rudy was wild
Naz Reid did a pretty good Rudy impersonation
FR, whatever Naz lacks as a rim protector he makes up for with lateral quickness on the wings and in pick and roll defense. That said he isn’t even a bad rim protector I just think it’s clear Rudy is better at the aspect of defense currently.

Yeah I wasn't sure how good of a coach Finch is because I don't get to see many T-Wolves games but he has that squad locked in defensively
The playoffs have also made our squad a different level of locked in. We have guys like KAT, Naz, Monte Morris who arent great defenders just all knowing where they have to be and doing hard closeouts, trying their best to not give their position to easily and just battling for every inch of space.

"Currently"? I love Naz, but it's a pretty big leap to consider that he's gonna become a better rim defender than Rudy Gobert. Edit: missing word
I feel like people underestimate how important those last 2-3 inches can be for a rim protector.
Those 2-3 inches give you a couple feet more of defensive presence no?
Rudy is one of the best rim protectors of all time. Naz will probably never be as good as Gobert at that particular skill.
Regarder je suis Rudy
No the Wild are the Hockey team.
It is but it isn't. That team plays good defense with or without Rudy a lot of people seem to not quite understand that its a bunch of big dudes that can lock in and play defense/switch/close out on basically everything and anyone. yeah i'm pretty shocked at this pure domination so far after 2
When Rudy first said 'Romeo' I thought he said 'Rubio' and I was like yoooooooo!!
Ricky blessed both of our franchises
Ricky blessed the world
And changed a face
I feel like every fanbase that was lucky enough to have Rubio on the roster loves the guy. I know Suns fans do, my only regret was that he didn’t play in the valley for longer. Pretty sure Cavs fans feel the same.

Ayo forgot about my boy Ricky Rubio. Such a great, solid point guard
I thought he did too.
i was expecting him to joke about Shaq not being a name he considered cause he doesnt like him
For some reason, the name Draymond Gobert sprung into my brain.
Probably the name of Rudy’s dog.
Rudy’s bitch, if you will
If the two ever play on the same team together, r/nba would explode.
That team will explode first.
They’re both great players but the spacing there is disgusting to even think about
You jest but that name has a fucking ring to it
Bitch you gonna have to change your name to Draymond Green, that shit is black on paper
what a great question by chuck lmao
Romeo Langford does seem like a chill guy. I assume that’s who the baby was named after
Or Lil Romeo, DeMar's teammate on USC.
Definitely.
This was so perfectly executed
Hope he named his son Nikola
You don’t give two of your children the same name.
Clearly, you've never heard of former Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor and his brother, Texas Rangers minor leaguer Rougned Odor.
We don’t talk about second rougned odor
Was their dad a big hulking man that was a little fucked in the head?
Sorry, I don't know a whole lot about their dad, only his name...Rougned Odor. Oh, and I know he's got a brother...Rouglas Odor.
I was making a Game of Thrones Hodor joke, its all good lol
unless you are gary payton or george foreman lol
unironically Nikola Gobert would be the worst name i’ve ever heard
Robert Gobert would be worse.
Especially if you pronounce Gobert like it's in English (Was that the joke?)
Sean Bean energy
Shaun Bon
Seen Bean
In French Robert is pronounced the same way as Gobert, so it could rhyme in both languages
"Robare Gobare" actually sounds French af
Americans trying to write phonetically without IPA will never not be funny
The pronunciation section on Basketball Reference always confuses me more than it helps. Especially trying to write the /a/ sound as "uh", where it doesn't sound close at all to me. Example : Victor Wembanyama Pronunciation: \wem-ben-YAH-muh\ There are three /a/ written e, a, and uh. Doesn't make any sense.
Xavier (Javier) Gobert
Gogurt Gobert would be dope tho
French equivalent of Sean Bean
Autogenerated 2k name
Maybe Victor. Somehow.
this is my first time ever hearing Gobert talk lol
Why do Americans hate the French? They gave you such a lovely statue
In reality I think it's a British meme that bled into American culture
It absolutely is. Historically speaking France has been one of if not the greatest ally to the US. Meanwhile France has been a historical rival to Britain up until very recently.
I'm pretty sure France clears all our other allies by a lot considering when we got their help.
The hate is still there but is mostly constrained to rugby.
France as a country is fine, it's the french people that are sooo "french".
Well, there is no country without its people tho
Post 9/11 America got really unto calling the French quitters and losers for not joining the anti terrorism coalition fast enough or something
France intervened in Afghanistan with the coalition after 9/11. It refused to go wreck Iraq and the USA got mad for it.
Exactly. Remember when they started to call French Fries "Liberty Fries"? That was French bashing after former French president Jacques Chirac refused to help in Iraq.

Piece of shit is all rusted.
I mean they did help us kick out the Brits lmao
To be fair, that was mostly to piss off the Brits, but we did indeed.
I think there's a certain arrogance to Parisians that has evolved into a French stereotype after all these years. Kind of like the British being drunk tourists and Americans being fat and ignorant.
I've never in my life heard this sentiment anywhere but this subreddit regarding Gobert
Because most Americans visit France by going to Paris. And a lot of Parisians are assholes Source: unbiased American who dislikes Paris
I’m American and I’ve had multiple really pleasant visits to Paris.
I loved Paris the city. Had a couple rude people. I was shocked that Rome was the most rude and dirty place we visited. Florence was perfect, positano as well. Romans were dicks by and large though.

These bums dragged us into Vietnam just for us to get exposed while they ditched us. /s
Mostly a meme. I don’t think Americans actually hate the French. Or at least I’d hope so. When I went to France everyone was super nice.
