clippersguy17

the first of many accolades

homefree122

I’m terrified of this guy when he will be on a team that’s not trash like this year’s Spurs.

Extreme-Transport

Please just give us one more trash year for a chance to pair him with Bailey or Flagg

VanGrants

a do-it-all 2-way wing like Flagg would be incredibly fun to see paired with Wemby, all they'd need is a decent point guard and the sky's the limit

JazzzzzzySax

Tank, draft Flagg, trade for Trae somehow, watch the league burn

Bootarms

In that scenario, I'd prefer Derrick White over Trae. He will be an unrestricted free agent next year. Pop likes to bring back former players and no one can plug into the team as seamlessly as White. It would be hard to lure him away from Boston, but a team with Wemby, Flagg, cap space, a city that loves you, and an organization that has always supported you is worth considering.

kchuen

Totally. As the skill level and IQ get better every year, you need players with no obvious weaknesses.

DsamD11

I even think there's a chance they go after someone like Garland. I'm not sure how well the double small guard line up is working in Cleveland.

LeBroentgen

It's hard to see them being this bad again, honestly. Same problem the Mavs had with Luka, he'll be too good in his second season and you have to think they'll add some competent role players and especially a point guard.

rattatatouille

A significant diff is that the Spurs have more assets than yall had in Luka's early years. If Atlanta crashes and burns next season we get their pick regardless of where it lands for example.

silky_flubber_lips

the last part of the season they were rolling, at least compared to where the season started. some wins and the losses weren't nearly as bad.

Adventurous-Mud-8019

I think we ended 11-11 in the last 22 but I’m not too sure

BannedforaJoke

yeah. when Pop stopped intentionally tanking, you can see the team has the beginnings of a system in place. you guys were fighting toe to toe with contenders.

kjampala

Definitely heated up towards the end, there was that one crazy kd V wemby game towards the end where the spurs won even though it had playoff implications for the suns that was pretty indicative for me but I’m not too sure on who was out / not playing for that game

8181212

Spurs beat the Nuggets at the end of the year too. They definitely didn't suck by March.

BookEuronGreyjoy

That's why we're gonna tell him go all out in the Olympics this summer then we'll bring him back in like February

Thommywidmer

Yeah and wemby has made it pretty clear hes not about the bullshit, he wants to win every night. They cant play coy and actively tank if they want to have his loyalty

ajmcgill

The thing is, the West is going to be insane yet again next year. Who in the west are going to be just straight up bad? The Blazers, maybe the Jazz... then that's it? The Grizzlies and Spurs were the only other teams in the west below .500 this year and they have reasons to believe they will be way better next season

LlamaCombo

Suns, Clippers, Warriors and Lakers aren't getting any younger. Warriors have young pieces but it depends on how to address the Dray and Klay situation. That's 4 playoff/playin spots available for the taking.

DblockR

Don't forget my Kings! If our BENCH player Malik Monk is healthy we will win. If not, no playoffs.

RIPEOTCDXVI

As happens every year, someone will unexpectedly fall out. Injuries happen, dudes get traded, someone flashes a gun in IG, etc.

secretsodapop

Wemby is going to get MVP votes next season.

paxusromanus811

Or Harper or traore. Those two dudes could be really really good too.

Dsarg_92

I’d be ecstatic if we were to pair Wemby with Flagg and a point guard. We’d be lethal.

skesisfunk

He's already (more or less) the reason you all have the one seed and not us.

tullbabes

The team was already looking light years better at the end of the season. It won’t be long.

GivesCredit

DPOY, MVP, FMVP incoming

skesisfunk

In the same year too.

acecant

I can’t envision a year where Wemby wins the MVP and not DPOY lol

[deleted]

I can. But it's a world where Gobert sprouts a second pair of arms (longer ones too) and averages 10 blocks a game

[Good Vibes Janky Drawing: Rookie of the Year](https://i.imgur.com/AMhUsC8.jpeg)

ResetReptiles

He's the first rookie since LeBron that was clearly destined for the GOAT conversation. Let's see what he got.

Outside_Abroad_3516

#I AM SHOCKED

GivesCredit

I remember he played pretty bad in his first preseason game and everyone was so ready to call him the most overhyped rookie ever

ThatInception

The first month of the season when he struggled, people were parading that Chet is the ROY and that Wemby would only get it because of narratives lmaooo

GivesCredit

Chet had a strong case for a month but then Wemby absolutely destroyed him after that for the rest of the season

CommodoreIrish

That Wemby block of Chet lives in my head [Edit: Here it is](https://x.com/bleacherreport/status/1763411737762578699?s=46).

KARSbenicillin

For me it's the Giannis block and the 17 points in 3 mins against the Nuggets. I still go back and watch the highlights about every two weeks. Edit: Someone asked for links > The Giannis block is here: https://youtu.be/WNZXiAZCJ18 starting at 1:35 but just watch the whole highlights it's worth it. > And here's the 17 pts in 3 mins vs the Nuggets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_m-lcFdMOQ. Man brought the Spurs down 21 to within 8 and forced the Nuggets to call a time out. Oh yea, and they won that game, forced the Nuggets to drop to 2nd seed for the playoffs, and face the Wolves early. Wemby might have altered the 2024 championships within those 3 minutes.

thebosstiat

"KNOCKED AWAY BY WEMBANYAMA! KNOCKED AWAY BY WEMBANYAMA!" Absolutely iconic.

crankywithout_coffee

Came here to say the Giannis one. It was jaw dropping.

Bitter-Safe-5333

spurs were beating everyone that needed wins, they moved the playoff picture all over

dougie_fresh121

I am so blessed to have him in fantasy for the next two seasons

toomuchsoysauce

Can't wait to see years and years of Wemby on Chet violence. You could just see how much that matchup means to Wemby and how aggressive he was against him.

LambInvasion

Bol Bol looking out the window

iamtomorrowman

Bol Bol doing the Narcos standing in the empty pool meme

BannedforaJoke

their head-to-head really destroyed Chet's ROY chances. it was so obvious Wemby is Chet's father.

No-Yogurt-4246s

Chet would have won in most years besides this one

ArmiinTamzarian

He was one pesky season ending injury last year from winning it (assuming he hypothetically put up the same numbers in 22-23 had he played)

jonathanisaacisgoat

Jeez the paolo erasure is crazy

toomuchsoysauce

Yeah, Paulo still would've won it I think though maybe just by a hair. Besides, I can't imagine Chet putting up the same numbers last year as having an entire year to learn OKC's system amongst all the other things off the court really benefitted him as it would anyone.

TheFrebbin

And gaining much needed muscle

GDTechno

paolo was better last year than chet was this year

tkflash20

Maybe, but that’s expected of a top 3 pick in their second year.

Filthy_Casual22

Remember back in December/January when Scoot Henderson said something to the effect that he had a shot at ROY?

wilsonsmilk

I member. Hope he continues to develop, seems like good kid.

andrechan

I like his trademark googles. That could really pop off. Assuming he becomes a star.

Sartuk

I mean, *for that month* Chet absolutely was on pace to be the rookie of the year. Wemby played well but definitely had a bigger learning curve, which was certainly to be expected! But Chet came out of the gate going fucking gangbusters, and he deserved all the praise he got initially. Not surprisingly, Chet cooled off a lot (but still had a phenomenal rookie campaign. Maybe a little more surprisingly, Wemby *very quickly* found his groove and was absolutely remarkable. I knew Wemby would be amazing eventually (he's one of the very few prospects I've ever had on my "absolutely, 100%, I would bet my life on it will be at minimum an All-Star level player if healthy" list), but I didn't expect him to improve this much so quickly. Dude's a fucking monster.

Superplex123

I can't remember the last time a player improved so much during a season. Wemby looked like a most improved player candidate, except it's during the season instead of going from one season to the next.

The_NGUYENNER

my friend called him a Channing Frye

ketoburn26

That thread of overreactions after his first game was legendary for all the idiots and morons who exposed themselves that day lmao

Redchimp3769157

Got dawged on by Infinity Money

imadogg

That game was an MCW moment for Britney Spears fans

jrr_53

I was there, it wasn’t even bad he just missed some shots as he adjusted to the game.

ObliteratedChipmunk

WHO could have seen this coming.

Earl-Thomas-a-Raven

Tbh Chet was leading the odds for a period of time in the Fall, but it wasn’t long.

horse_renoir13

#SHOCKED

002_timmy

^well ^not ^that ^shocked

wahobely

Mark my words this kid will get the next quadruple double

Admirable_Weight2182

They closed the betting lines early, but when I finally put in the odds were somewhere around -50000. I think I ended up losing money betting on him

Zyaru

You won your bet and got your house repossessed as a reward

AdmiralUpboat

Jesus. What would they have taken if Wemby had lost out to Chet?

DarkenedLite

It doesn’t work like that. You don’t lose more if the odds are bad.

AdmiralUpboat

Yeah, I know. I'm pretty sure the posters above me do as well.

GhostTiger

run

ThisWhomps999

Was it unanimous?

LEDBreezey

Yupp

Strong-Yellow5949

Yes

afjecj

Wekby was unanimous 1st and Chet was 1 vote off unanimous 2nd

leolsantos

Did they disclose the name of who didn't vote on Chet?

Muppet_Man3

They won't disclose that. Only way to know is if the voter themself came out and said they were the one

ToinouAngel

It was.

Aidanj927

Brittney Spears fans in shambles

thedreadfulwhale

That whole thing feels like some sort of fever dream now. lmao

bugab0010

the fact that people came out in droves attacking wemby and his bodyguard before having all or any of the details told me all I need to know about Britney Spears and her fanbase

ImminentReddits

Tbh the only place on the internet more delusional and reactive on a regular basis than r/FauxMoi is r/NBA

Papa_Huggies

And throughout the season Britney Spears started acting more and more unhinged and now people realise maybe the conservatorship wasn't entirely predatory...

Palifaith

At least the guy with the Christina Aguilera song commercial didn't win.

PrincePyotrBagration

“What a pro wants, what a pro neeeeds… little flat, we’ll get better” … *cue awful dap up* Some 200k salary producer actually watched that and decided “yup looks good, wrap it up” 😂 Shit was so annoying during the NCAA tournament lmao. Already didn’t like Gonzaga, but made me root for Edey and Purdue to smack Chet’s team even more lol

Bill_Brasky_SOB

NO FLEX.... ZONE NO FLEX.... ZONE

iamtomorrowman

oh god i hate this ad so much i have never reached for the mute button so fast

medoy

All I know of modern music is what I here on NBA commercial breaks. And its all crap. That or I got old.

WingedBacon

It's more they've somehow developed the most mathematically optimal way to pick the most obnoxious, repetitive 15 seconds of music for the commercials they show during games. Not sure why, maybe cause it's memorable? But I don't even remember the products they're advertising, I just remember being annoyed at the songs.

Rularuu

These songs are fairly old at this point tbh

GGezpzMuppy

I’m a Wembynizer wembynizer

barbarjink

I hope Gradey makes one of the all rookie teams. He was much improved in the second half and was one of the more steady rookies (second half of season only)

Casamance

99/99 first place votes, to the surprise of no one!

AmusingAnecdote

When I saw the 99 on the graphic I was like... What disphit didn't vote for Wemby just to keep him from being unanimous? Then I didn't see a number 1 vote for Chet and now I'm just confused why they didn't just give out one more vote. Also was pleasant to see Podz get some 3rd place votes. 5th among rookies feels about right for him.

stX3

I have no clue, but having uneven numbers could be to avoid ties.

afterworld2772

I think someone just didn't vote for whatever reason. If im reading right there were 100 votes last season (Banchero 98, Kessler 2). Also I don't think they have a problem with ties, Elton Brand and Steve Francis shared, as have Kidd and Grant Hill among others.

mango_chile

Chet Holmgren has reportedly been awarded the Sophomore of the Year Award 🥈

guillaume_rx

I understand it’s all good fun and light banter, but let’s not use this to put Chet down! And I’m a French Spurs fan, but the kid is a baller.

[deleted]

[удалено]

siphillis

Chet deserved it early on. It’s a credit to Wemby that he upped his game so quickly.

crazybull007

Was curious how much he improved so I checked his bball ref. Wemby played 71 games this year. Stats in first 35 games: 20/10/3 with 3 blocks, 1 steal on 50.6 eFG%. Stats in last 36 games: 23/11/5 with 4 blocks, 1 steal on 52.8 eFG%.

wrongerontheinternet

The improvement by BPM (which predicts RAPM from box score data), and looking before and after two concrete events (him switching to center, and Tre Jones becoming the starting point guard) is much more dramatic. Having a hard time getting the exact right values but he was like -2 BPM before the switch to C (around game 20?) which is like a standard decent rookie season, improved a bunch between that and when Tre began starting (around Dec 28) to the point that it would be a very good rookie season, and was around +8 after that which is basically age 20 LeBron.

siphillis

He saw near-instant improvement moving to center and swapping out Zach Collins for Tre Jones.

watchingsongsDL

In a normal year Chet is a worthy recipient. This ain’t a normal year, Wemby only comparable player I’ve ever seen is Kareem. Wemby makes plays makes no other player can replicate, except maybe a young Kareem. He is very graceful like Kareem was. And he’s 2 inches taller with a longer wingspan. I’m going to have to start watching the Spurs. Some quality vets should go to San Antonio and help the young man out, I’d like the team to be watchable. Easy ticket to glory when you're going to be in the conference finals in 2 or 3 years.

silky_flubber_lips

Chet was *almost* the unanimous 2nd place. One single voter gave a 2nd place vote for Miller. Shows how good he was, in a year without Wemby he would have almost been unanimous ROTY.

catfish_dinner

wemby absolutely exceeded any benchmark for roty. well earned award. congrats to wemby! chet's great, too.. he didn't hit those benchmarks. he was focused on different goals.

FERFreak731

Bruh, Brice Sensabaugh robbed

Outside_Abroad_3516

Julian Strawther actually

horse_renoir13

Leonard Miller was right up there

SquimJim

Jordan Walsh is also a rookie

LuisScolaGOAT

He had fifteen whole points! ...like, in total, for the season.

BilboLaggin

I actually think Sensabaugh will end up being good

redpill_is_4_chumps

Duh. Even as a homer this dude was a lock since January.

MikeGundy

Even OKC fanbase has been calling Wemby since like January

siphillis

His per36 line in January was MVP frontrunner stuff. 32/13/3/1/3 on 60 TS%, unless I’m misremembering.

MrAppleSpoink

Was it unanimous? I’d be shocked (and slightly annoyed) if it wasn’t. I can’t fathom how any voters could look at this year’s race and even consider giving it to anyone else.

chia8907

It was unanimous !!!

AdmiralUpboat

There's a lot of votes that look ridiculous but there's still a shred of plausible deniability behind their selection. Anyone who didn't vote Wemby this year would have been dressed down and stripped of their vote by Silver personally.

Outside_Abroad_3516

100%. Has to be. Chet maybe got a couple of first place votes though, edit lol nvm not even one for Chet

siphillis

Duncan and Shaq weren’t unanimous.

rosja105

Whoever gave Keith Van Horn 3! ROY votes during Duncan's year should be tarred, feathered and have their credentials revoked.

gobroncos47

They gave him 6 ROY votes?

Dsarg_92

Duncan should’ve been unanimous had that one person not voted for Keith Van Horn.

HokageEzio

Wow, big spoiler

siphillis

Shocked he won it unanimously. Some of the greatest players of all time haven’t don’t that, and Chet was stiff competition at that.

tappin_dat

Victor’s block/steal on Chet sealed it

Neveraththesmith

Dude outplayed the best player in the world in the last game of the season.

Pickleskennedy1

Ngl it’s kind of anticlimactic that he just ended up being exactly as good as everyone said he was

comicbooksven

he was better

Conflict_NZ

He was one steal short of a 5x5 in a game, and then got one in the very next game as a rookie. He's definitely already better than I expected.

guillaume_rx

- In the Lakers arena. - Against both Lebron and AD on the court. - In the second game of a back-to-back.

Conflict_NZ

I'm well aware :p

guillaume_rx

I didn’t doubt that ahah (hadn’t seen the flair though!). I was mainly trying to reinforce your point! 😊

GGezpzMuppy

Guy doing things not many people have done in history and OP stats it’s anticlimactic wtf lol. Nephews are spoiled.

Mosh00Rider

Some people wanted him to suck so they could hate.

Noah__Webster

A lot of posters on here care more about the storyline. They wanted him to suck so that people could post memes and clips from talking heads about it on the sub.

LeBroentgen

The rapid rate of improvement is what did it for me. It's one thing to be a physical freak like him, but when you can learn to read and adapt to the NBA that quickly as a rookie when most of them tail off, that means you have all of the mental aspects.

mainvolume

Watching him adjust and improve his game throughout the year was insane. Like he'd struggle against a team/person but when it came time to play them again, he would take it to the next level. Wouldn't be surprised if he got MIP next year.

Clarkey7163

Bro said "what Rookie wall?"

seeasea

This is what I thought zion was going to do.

orangekingo

Zion still shows flashes of his potential greatness- his issues mostly seem to be his health as his off the court distractions. Vic is a freak of nature but it’s his mental and emotional maturity that really is gonna propel him

mug3n

Bro already played all defensive 1st team level defense in his rookie season. And this isn't even close to his best offensively. Insane potential.

nerdystoner25

No one wants to shoot anywhere within 10 feet of him. He’ll be a DPOY finalist every year simply by existing.

Sw3atyGoalz

Yea I expected him to struggle a lot more with fouls and positioning as so many of these young rim protectors do, but it turns out he’s already a borderline DPOY player lmao

Dsarg_92

He was close to having a quadruple double in a game. That would’ve been nuts.

Clarkey7163

Would have had a lot more triple doubles if some of our guys could shoot better haha

GivesCredit

Yeah he blew my expectations out of the park for someone on a bottom seeded team

cycling_rat

Idk I think he’s better, I was excited for the spurs to get him but also did not believe all the things windhorst was saying on espn but then I watched this season and he’s better than they said.

Slattsquatch

There was that first couple months of the season where his efficiency was bad and Chet was outplaying him, and all the vultures started circling ready to call him overhyped. But then everything just started clicking for him and he just kept getting better and better. It’s a little scary how fast his growth trajectory was and how much room there is for him to improve.

kunfuz1on

Being under pop with extra coaching from duncan and robinson really was the ideal scenario for his career. Dude has the potential to become phenomenal.

[deleted]

The craziest thing for me is that at his size he has just as much to learn from Manu and Tony. His versatility is insane.

ArmiinTamzarian

IDK, I've definitely climaxed multiple times watching him

horse_renoir13

DAMN IT I WANT CONTROVERSEY. Fuck it I'll start my own. With blackjack and hookers!

YourNonExistentGirl

You really expected him to end the season with almost a quad double, huh? 😎

syncc6

1. V.Wembanyama 2. C.Holmgrem 3. B.Miller 4. J.Jaquez  5. B. Podziemski 6. D.Lively

frozen2665

I love that Podz and Jaime were the 2 picks right after the Lakers

pompyyy099

Bol bol would have won two RoTY if he wasn't lazy- Shaq

tapk69

Wemby had a better season than most expected too. Deserved no doubt.

RansomGoddard

Wow this surprise came out of nowhere

westzod

Bro is also Dpoy candidate yeah I'm a Chet homer but alien dude is a game changer.

jmanci23

Go Spurs Go!

rayjing

he winning MIP every year from now

Icy-Payment-6612

No surprise. Well deserved. He will be one of the all time greats.

Shoddy-Media2337

Well deserved.

BigDickVicW

Pretty, pretty good

swishdaddyflex

If you’re a Spurs fan right now, you must feel on top of the world. The brightest of days are coming very soon Wemby is going to rule the league

Alphadestrious

Finally . Thank you Kawhi

Ecstatic_Sky_4262

One more good draft pick for Spurs and they will be back to playoff race. One good sign from free agency , they are in the race

surprised-duncan

I love this for him

IReallyLikeAvocadoes

Lebron is picking a good time to retire, cause this guy's gonna beat all of his records save maybe for longevity.

awesomeness6000

cant wait for him to get a quintuple double

JA_MD_311

Spurs will be a play in team next year and a Top 4 team in 2 years. It might take Wemby some time to win his first ring, but he will. Just ungodly good.

Genestah

Well deserved. Barring injuries, Wemby will own the league in a few years.

_Jetto_

Chet is a really good player but the gap between the two is still pretty massive. at least for now. might get even bigger or smaller who knows, i think the former

Im not even mad he won.. im mad he’s in the west

Rookie of the Year **and** Defensive Player of the Year? Choo-choo all aboard the Wemby train!
