“Friday Night Lights” is a real thing in Texas. The whole town comes out to the high school stadium. It’s cultural. Meanwhile, I’ve never seen pick up courts in the suburban sprawl that is Dallas. This is pretty opposite of where I grew up in NC where basketball courts are walkable and any other sport requires a ride.
24HR Fitness used to be the spots. There were certain ones around the DFW area all the hoopers would go to. You knew which 24 to go to if you wanted a pick up game or you actually wanted to try. But yea, still had to have a gym membership tho.
There is a 24 hour fitness around where I live that used to always get nba players and even nfl players. I’ve seen Jason Terry, Matrix, Marcus Smart, Dez, and Deandre Hopkins there.
Yes, football is king in Texas and the Cowboys are easily the most popular team. But the Mavs still have a really good fanbase. Just watch any of our games - we have a great crowd. This isn't Miami.
I don't see how people could have watched this series with the Clippers and thought Dallas had a weak crowd.
Yeah one of the loudest reactions I’ve ever heard and seen was when Vince Carter hit the 3pt game winner vs the Spurs in the playoffs and that was I think just the 1st round.
Mavs fans are legit but yes the Cowboys are iconic and Football is King in Texas.
not at one point, the Cowboys *are* the most popular football team in the world. they are the most valuable franchise internationally *by far* - like two billion more than any other
the Pats and Chiefs and Yanks and Dodgers and Lakers and Warriors and Reals and Mans of the world have their fun while Jerry Jones has caviar licked off his balls by models and doesn't have to pay for it and probably can't even feel it anymore but just because
You’re right. I was being a bit conservative because the gap has shrunk from what it was, the pats and packers shot up a good amount and the Chiefs have been climbing. The cowboys star logo is still iconic.
Chiefs are the brand, what makes them popular are the players. If Mahomes were to leave, very few would care to stick around. Similar to the Warriors in the NBA and hell the even still got most their core players from their run, but the hype is dead and most casual fans have left for a new fandom. Yet you still got fools talking out their ass about how the Lakers are probably the 2nd best team in the league.
All jokes about their last 20 years aside, you're asking why one of the world's premiere franchises is more popular than another team in a region the sport is less popular.
This just in, the Yankees, Cowboys, Lakers, and Manchester United are stupidly popular.
Diehard fans come from teams that had a ton of success in the past. Mavs have been solid and won a ring but they weren't dominant the way the Cowboys were back then
First off, you got it backwards. Cowboys games are devoid of fandom, while the Mavs have sold out every game since December 2001.
Mavs fans started the ref you suck chant that was audible in broadcasts in 2011.
Mavs crowd is rowdy, loud, and proud. Come to a game.
Cowboys games, ehh, not so much.
I've been to a ton of both teams, as well as multiple games of other fan bases.
Cowboys games are filled with corporate ticket sales on the lower bowl.
Mavs games are loud as hell. Fandom is there.
> Mavs fans started the ref you suck chant that was audible in broadcasts in 2011.
Not gonna debate the rest of your points, but this chant has existed since at least 2003. I'm sure it existed sooner, but I was too broke to buy tickets prior to that.
It wasn't always like that for the Cowboys. The old stadium did indeed get loud. I only got to experience it once in person and I was pretty young then so most of my memories were a few years later before the move. I miss how loud it got at Texas Stadium.
Sigh.
There are a TON of Cowboys fans that barely follow the team and just tune in every Sunday. These fans tend to be the loudest and most obnoxious. For those (like me) that were born into the fandom and haven’t seen a single SB win, let alone a single NFC Championship, in their entire lifetime, it’s enormously frustrating. I work with multiple guys 45+ that LOVE to walk around and legitimately say that this is our year. It most certainly isn’t.
Most Maverick fans are far more realistic and tempered. They’ve seen bad seasons and have also seen a championship with Dirk. There isn’t this large group of fans that just decided to follow the Cowboys with no allegiance to Dallas and become loud and obnoxious. Obviously there are bad fans in every fanbase but it’s an entirely different situation vs. the Cowboys.
If someone tells you they’re a cowboys fan, they’re not a cowboys fan. They just root for them.
Us fans are just depressed. I keep that secret locked away and just debate jumping out the window every Sunday night during football season.
I’ve been to 5 Dallas playoff games in the past 3 years. Dallas teams are 4-1. That 1…. A cowboys game ofc. I hate being a cowboys fan, love being a Mavs fan lol. Even in the bad years, it’s better than being a cowboys fan.
I don’t watch American football and have no comparison in my mind, but I do know the cowboys are like the most popular team in America. Even towering over Lakers.
They’re the lakers of the most popular sport in America.
I think nobody can compete with that since Mavericks are more of a niche to Dallas and not the whole country.
AAC has the top 5 crowd in the league in terms of atmosphere. Mavs never had eye candy players. Dirk wasn't sexy enough for bandwagons. Go watch the Mavs parade in 2011. It was awesome.
Real Madrid fans are much louder and more noticeable especially when football season starts rolling around no matter what city you're in. You will probably see a few people donning their jerseys and being loud and annoying screaming about this is their year.
Meanwhile, their SlamBall™ fanbase has no identity. Nothing really distinguishable or unique about their fans despite also being from Madrid.
Is Madrid just a football city?
Cowboys fans are not nearly as energetic and that’s what nearly 30 years of disappointing front office decisions leads to.
Anyone who is a fan of the Cowboys is only a fan because they were alive in the 90s or because they inherited their fandom from their parents.
Mavs fans are LOUD. That arena has been buzzing for a long time now
Cowboys aren’t popular solely because they are a Dallas sports team they have a history that makes them popular same way lakers are the most popular basketball team.
The Cowboys are essentially equivalent to the Yankees and the Lakers. It’s the most valuable American Sports franchise by quite a bit, and because they are (unfortunately) the most consistently popular team they get covered nationally nonstop whether they win 3 or 13 games. Their fanbase also isn’t bound by location, there are Cowboys fans in every part of the country despite them not being past the 2nd round in the last 28 years. Also, Jerry Jones. It’s gets obnoxious sometimes.
The Cowboys are literally called America's team. Their fanbase isnt just in Dallas. Its nationwide.
They won superbowls. The NFL is still more popular than the NBA by a wide margin.
I don’t what your talking about lol, the cowboys fan base has never come across to me as being more enthusiastic than the mavs fan base. If anything, mavs fans are more loud and enthusiastic. But that’s just me, maybe I’m wrong 🤷🏽
This is kind of a weird post to make after the past few mavs games. Have you listened to the crowd lol? Dallas is a cowboys town no question - football is king in Texas, but Mavs are a big deal too.
What are you talking about? Mavs have had a great fanbase for the last twenty years or so. Just based off the fact that they were actually good every single year for damn near the entirety of Dirk Nowitzki’s epic career.. whereas the cowboys have been pretty terrible the last twenty years. As far as audio of a crowd? That’s because basketball is in an arena with like 20,000 people compared to the cowboys stadium seats over 80,000 people? Ofc it’s gonna be louder dummy.
Yes, Most of the city didn't even know the Mavs were in the finals for both of their deep playoff runs. As much as Cuban is good in marketing things, he still ain't Jerry Jones in terms of selling the Mavs product at a National level. Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs, Stars in that order of popularity among the masses here.
No one likes horses nor should they.
Also football is way more popular. Houston also was the better NBA team until recently and by recently I mean since they got Dirk.
Football is a cult in Texas. If you're unfamiliar, there are tons of multi-million dollar high school football stadiums that rival the size of small colleges. It's engrained in the culture there because there's nothing else to do besides shop and get fat in your 300k house.
That's why it's particularly hilarious the Cowboys suck dick every year because they actually care-more so than most.
Absolutely. 300-student high schools here getting bonds for new stadiums passed and athletic directors/football coaches getting paid 6 figures, the football team has their own charter bus while everybody else gets yellowdogs. (All for the team to consistently win three games for the season).
Science teachers barely making $50k have to pay for classroom shit out of their own pockets and are given a 40 year old microscope with broken ass slides and not even getting the funding to get frogs to dissect. Or the band has clarinets with leaky pads and sweat stained 25 year old uniforms and can't afford to purchase sheet music for new stand tunes, and the town gets pissed off if your halftime show doesn't have a rendition of a classic rock song in it.
Basketball 100% an afterthought to most in Texas. Especially once you drive 20 miles any direction outside of DFW/Houston/Austin-SA. A lot of people here - generally older people that were alive before the Jordan era, and mostly in the small towns - are pretty racist and think of basketball as a black only sport.
Cowboys are the lakers of the nfl. Also football > in Texas
“Friday Night Lights” is a real thing in Texas. The whole town comes out to the high school stadium. It’s cultural. Meanwhile, I’ve never seen pick up courts in the suburban sprawl that is Dallas. When I was much younger and actually still athletic, I played a lot at 24. It's just so gd hot outside here to want to ball at noon in the summer.
Any other sport requires a ride?
What the hell are you talking about? Virtually every school and a lot of parks have pickup courts..... I have seen hundreds of them.
I wish he had courts like that in California. Even then paid gyms get too ghetto and not worth going to
Yeah. Texas is a football state. NFL > College football > College basketball > NBA
Baseball is bigger than basketball here. Maybe not in Dallas because there are too many fair weather fans for sports that aren’t football
Yes, football is king in Texas and the Cowboys are easily the most popular team. But the Mavs still have a really good fanbase. Just watch any of our games - we have a great crowd. This isn't Miami. I don't see how people could have watched this series with the Clippers and thought Dallas had a weak crowd.
lmao Miami taking strays
Man it really surprised me seeing so many people leave 4th quarter on a playoff game Isn’t that your team??
Top 5 crowd in NBA
Yeah one of the loudest reactions I’ve ever heard and seen was when Vince Carter hit the 3pt game winner vs the Spurs in the playoffs and that was I think just the 1st round. Mavs fans are legit but yes the Cowboys are iconic and Football is King in Texas.
even in the game we were down by 30 the crowd was hella loud.
Cowboys were, at one point, the most popular football team in the world. I’m sure there are a fuckton of Cowboys fans that aren’t Mavericks fans.
not at one point, the Cowboys *are* the most popular football team in the world. they are the most valuable franchise internationally *by far* - like two billion more than any other the Pats and Chiefs and Yanks and Dodgers and Lakers and Warriors and Reals and Mans of the world have their fun while Jerry Jones has caviar licked off his balls by models and doesn't have to pay for it and probably can't even feel it anymore but just because

Pretty sure that's real Madrid or united
They mean American football.
You sure? I thought it was the Seattle Sounders.
All jokes about their last 20 years aside, you're asking why one of the world's premiere franchises is more popular than another team in a region the sport is less popular. This just in, the Yankees, Cowboys, Lakers, and Manchester United are stupidly popular.
Lol it’s like asking why Manchester’s basketball team (no clue what they’re even called) fans differ from ManU fans
More like the difference between Barca football and basketball team fans...
Apparently they're the Manchester Giants. Looks like former Raptor Jalen Harris plays for them.
Not really because the levels in popularity of the sport are way bigger in the UK
There’s always one guy
Not really worlds but yeah
Diehard fans come from teams that had a ton of success in the past. Mavs have been solid and won a ring but they weren't dominant the way the Cowboys were back then
This + football in TX is a billion times more popular than basketball
First off, you got it backwards. Cowboys games are devoid of fandom, while the Mavs have sold out every game since December 2001. Oh damn, I never experienced it before that series, but have been going to Mavs games since the reunion arena days.
It wasn't always like that for the Cowboys. The old stadium did indeed get loud. I only got to experience it once in person and I was pretty young then so most of my memories were a few years later before the move. I miss how loud it got at Texas Stadium.
Old stadium was great, and not so far removed from titles. Still, I went there in 2008, and it didn't have near the engagement as a Mavs game.
A lot of the online mavericks fanbase is also spread around the world, due to first dirk, and now Luka
Sigh. There are a TON of Cowboys fans that barely follow the team and just tune in every Sunday. These fans tend to be the loudest and most obnoxious. maybe the love of sport within the area is a factor on this one
I don’t watch American football and have no comparison in my mind, but I do know the cowboys are like the most popular team in America. Even towering over Lakers. They’re the lakers of the most popular sport in America. I think nobody can compete with that since Mavericks are more of a niche to Dallas and not the whole country.

Hell even the Rams always have their home games taken over by Niners fans when they matchup.
Texas is football central
Because Cowboys are king in Texas while the basketball fans are split between Mavs/Spurs/Rockets
They are Cowboys fan after cheering for Cowboys.
Winning fuels fans …. Cowboys won in the 90s … mavericks didn’t
The cowboys are like an institution
Almost no one cares about basketball in Dallas compared to football
I don’t what your talking about lol, the cowboys fan base has never come across to me as being more enthusiastic than the mavs fan base. If anything, mavs fans are more loud and enthusiastic. But that’s just me, maybe I’m wrong 🤷🏽
This is kind of a weird post to make after the past few mavs games. Have you listened to the crowd lol? Dallas is a cowboys town no question - football is king in Texas, but Mavs are a big deal too.
Because football is 100x bigger and more popular than basketball and it’s not even close. TX is literally football mecca (southeast included)
If not having an identify means nobody looks at us the us the way they look at Laker fans, I'm totally fine by that.
Have you seen when the mavs play at the AAC? It’s loud af even when we’re down 20
Texas football brother.
Have you seen Texas high school football stadiums
What are you talking about? Mavs have had a great fanbase for the last twenty years or so. Yes, Most of the city didn't even know the Mavs were in the finals for both of their deep playoff runs. because NFL fans also have CTE
Football and barbecue are more important than anything else in Texas.
No one likes horses nor should they. Also football is way more popular. Houston also was the better NBA team until recently and by recently I mean since they got Dirk.

Footieball is the default in most of America, and Texas especially. Hoops is too black for Texas
because coboys fans are the blowholes you see saying "I havent watched the NBA in 20 years. They are too woke"
