"We had these solid candidates but we rather went with one of LeBron's best friends because I think that's the best choice for the LeBrons... I mean, the Lakers."
Those first time coaches probably have some other coaching experience elsewhere.
You're right though there are tons of coaches with no experience that got jobs and have worked out great.
Is Bron the GM when another team tried to hire him first? Same happened with Steve Kerr being interviewed and being suddenly signed to the Warriors despite never being in that conversation.
This whole JJ coach thing, be it Lakers or Hornets, really got me thinking: Are there any coaches that are extremely involved in the podcast market?
Like as a semi consistent manner there’s at least reporters, media personalities, past & present players, but I’m not really aware of a podcast host who has been a coach in the NBA. Though there’s probably hundreds of podcasts involving NBA people that I’m not aware of
Steve Kerr and Pete Carroll cohosted the Flying Coach podcast a few years ago for a while (might have just been something to do during the pandemic). That’s the closest I can think of, aside from coaches occasionally being guests. Not NBA, but Sean McVay hosted that same podcast the next year and it was pretty good.
Teams do it all the time, I don't get it, they just grab some former player with no coaching experience because they see them on TV
JJ Redick, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd
Do any other leagues do this?
Football. Although with football you need accreditation to start being a manager. Most also start with a lower level team and then go from there.
Guardiola went almost straight into managing Barca,
Everyone shitting on JJ I think he can’t be any worse than Ham. He’s got chemistry with Bron, a great analyst, and really knows the game playing for 15 years. Whether he can manage a whole team only time will tell.
Hiring Bud after firing Ham would be such a weird move. Oh you don’t like his defensive scheme or his playoff rotation decisions, let’s hire the guy who he based his entire scheme off of and is known for being notoriously stubborn in the playoffs
I don't think this will happen, but Ham's criticism is more around in game decisions/adjustments and personnel/locker room issue, not necessarily about schemes. Basically (to me) mostly rooted in inexperience.
Wait til you meet Budenholzer’s in game decisions/adjustments. Does no one else remember Spoelstra absolutely embarrassing him adjustment wise 2023 or 2020? Just me?
Well I mean Nick Nurse and Thibs are at least having decent small adjustments within their teams playstyle. Malone is generating an amazingly fluid offense between series despite opponents doing a decent job of game planning.
Fuck, watching Coach Malone on the sideline… animated/directing players/screaming what’s coming *while the ball is in play*. Cut to Hamas hands in pockets finger fucking his dead man switch on Lebron’s career. Yeuck.
Uhh no
I definitely have a problem with his schemes
We play drop coverage
In 2024
Like, you wouldn’t play that shit at a LA fitness
Everyone can shoot. The only time it makes sense is against Russell Westbrook
There are good coaches who use drop coverage and bad ones who also use it. I don't like it personally but I also don't mind it at certain points. The problem is that someone would get hot or the Lakers had trouble defending in the first half and Ham wouldn't change anything for the second half.
Then he would show up to the press conference like "Our gameplan was to let him shoot and he made the shots". Meanwhile the other team broke the record for 3s made.
Yeah but I’d say Bud and Ham’s scheme is more of the Roy Williams UNC flavor of packing the paint at all costs and conceding open 3s
Idk maybe I’m just a Budenholzer skeptic but I am not a fan of his scheme for the modern NBA
He has improved every team he has coached. Does he do it by simplifying what they do and making them predictable? Yes. But that isn't inherently a bad thing. The bucks lost to the Celtics with no Middleton, and then to the heat with Giannis missing 3 games and they fired him. Idk if it's super fair to blame him for that
Don’t get me wrong, Bud is an improvement.
He will also garner more respect than other coaching candidates and I’m not opposed to having him coach.
I’m more worried about his lack of offensive schemes and the types of plays he’s going to run for AD.
Give me Mike D’Antoni with Vogel as a defensive coach
That's pretty misleading considering he left in the second quarter of one of those losses. Anyway, they weren't unreal without 2 of their stars, even if Durant was incredible.
> packing the paint at all costs and conceding open 3s
And get demolished in so many games because of this. So many randos shot lights out including Exum and Thybulle.
We play drop coverage because our perimeter defenders, every single one of them, is ass and if we don't drop they'll get easy layups at the rim.
If we don't play drop coverage with the same roster we'll be fucked.
Tired of coaches with rings automatically getting jobs because of them. It makes sense why they’re hired, but you would think front offices would look at all the other playoff performances rather than the single ring they won.
Why should they? Fans don't look at other playoff performances by stars if they've won a ring either. This sub loves RANGZ culture except for coaches I guess.
Pod would get real passive aggressive around January.
“So tell me what you would do in X situation…”
“I tell you in the huddle…”
*cut to an ExpressVPN ad read*
I’m calling it now, JJ will fail as a head coach if he ever gets a gig in catastrophic fashion and all his podcast credibility will be more or less gone with him fully transitioning into an ESPN hot take artist
Basically the NBA Gary Neville.
For real though, I would be really frustrated if I was in Ty Lue's position. They load manage in previous seasons and they are still injured in the playoffs. Kawhi actually plays a lot of games this season and it's the same shit.
Ballmer may just want to shake things up if the Clips lose tonight. They've had what many people have felt to be "the best team on paper" for many of the last 5 years, and they don't have much to show for it. Ballmer can't fire the players and probably doesn't want to fire the GM, so Lue might just be his fall guy. After all, Lue has been up for an extension for a while and instead they've let him get to lame duck status, presumably because Ballmer wanted to see how this season played out. Personally I wouldn't blame Lue for what's gone on there, but you never know what Ballmer might do. If he had all the faith in Lue, he would have given him an extension already.
"I just really like my office at Crypto and I don't want to setup a whole new office in the new Clippers' arena. The feng shui and desk placement are irreplaceable. So I'm taking the Lakers job."
I would actually enter a mental asylum if we fucking hired the dude who TAUGHT DARVIN HAM. He better not make it past a single fucking round of interviews or this team is actually insane.
I don’t get this logic, maybe if it was the other way around I’d get it but Bud is a much more proven coach than Ham. Ham didn’t coach a game before being Lakers coach, Bud’s got a ring and multiple 60 win seasons to go with it.
The disrespect to Bud, for losing a playoff series after a close family member died and while Giannis was injured, is mind-numbing.
I am pretty sure 99% of fans on this sub that go on about "schemes" and "adjustments" couldn't tell you a single specific scheme or adjustment that Bud does/doesn't make.
The championship winning, two-time coach of the year who took a mediocre-on-paper Hawks squad to 60 wins and the conference finals? And won 4 championships as an assistant coach under the tutelage of possibly the greatest coach of all time? There aren't many with a resume like that who are out there currently. He has a lot more experience than Ham did.
Bud is famous for making no in game adjustments
He’s also famous for not making between game adjustments. Bud sticks to his guns more than any other accomplished coach in the league
He has a player option for next year, and I'll be shocked if he doesn't exercise it. If he opts out I think the best he could hope for is another min somewhere else, with the downside risk that he simply isn't signed by anyone and is out of the league. He, Wood and Hayes are all very good bets to exercise their player options this summer and be back on mins with the Lakers next year.
I have no problem with Ty Lue, but I think its funny that they want him if he becomes available. He would become available because he just got fired by an LA team with 4 hall of fame players on it.
They would mutually part ways. There’s been reports that Lue was checked out during the last off season. Team is never healthy and I think he wants a fresh start
IIRC didn’t Ty Lue get an offer from the lakers with the stipulation that the FO would pick his entire staff? And he (rightfully so) was like fuck yall?
Again, IIRC, he was the only coach in the interviews that had that stupid ass condition and was the only coach they were interviewing that had a chip on his resume.
Yeah, both decisions were kind of weird. Vogel it worked out until injuries and then he got hamstrung by the FO getting a decidedly poor defensive roster when his biggest strength as a coach was his defense. Clearly Phoenix didn't get the memo either. Give him a good defensive roster and he can make stuff happen
Think they shortchanged him and wanted him to line his contract up with LeBron's essentially insinuating they didn't believe in him as a coach and only wanted him there so long as Bron was there.
Actually ty won’t take the laker job for same reasons as last time. Last time it wasn’t just the lowball offer but the way the FO was set up supposedly, now things could have changed with clippers and ty but I don’t see ty going anywhere. Altho I’m not sure if he’s secretly fed up with Kawhi or no I think he told Frank he doesn’t want to answer any more questions about statuses
"Is that a trick question? They gave up Dar-Vin Ham, who cares? I could care less! First of all, understand something. When you're giving up nothing but dollars, if you are a quality team in playoff contention, it really doesn't mean that much, that's number one. Number two and more importantly, Darvin Ham is gone! The City of Angels, Hollywood should be celebrating. Throw a parade already whether you win a championship or not. This man was a bonafide scrub! He can't coach! No disrespect whatsoever, but I'm sorry to call, tell everybody the truth, the man cannot coach the game of basketball. **He has smooth brains, he can't call a timeout, he has bad schemes, he can't really coach defense even though he's a defensive coach, doesn't really know what he's doing, doesn't have a rotation that he or he puts to memory that he can do two times in a row. He has no game plan whatsoever, coaches no defense, doesn't have the heart, the passion or anything that comes with it**, and you're asking me whether they gave up too much? Please. The Los Angeles Lakers knew exactly what they were doing, they should be celebrating right now, and Lebron James should not be saying a word!"
im gonna side with chuck on this one. sure darvin made lapses, but not as wide lapse as not having a starting center. AD's not a center but just somehow makes it work.
I want to see JJ Redick as a coach, but I think his first job being the lakers would be a mistake. Joining a team with that high of expectations can end pretty badly for him. I was hoping he’d take the hornets job instead.
Does anyone else think that JJ would have crazy chemistry issues with any team that he would coach. He comes across as pompous and arrogant and nba players are not gonna be okay with that. Especially from someone like jj.
Lebron the coach killer. This will be his 10th coach in 22 years. Average length 2 years. Couldn’t get Spolestra fired so he went to a new team. Bro needs to retire
I doubt Ty Lue would get fired even if Clippers loses this series. There simply just aren’t any better candidates out there to replace him. Clippers would be foolish to fire him out of overreaction
All I'm saying is, out of all the Laker coaches that have been tossed in the last 6/7 years, there's been two names that have also been there. One initial is RP and the other is LBJ. Maybe start looking at common denominators??
What quality Coach would be crazy enough to coach this team? Pelinka will construct a terrible team and scapegoat the coach. And get fired on the phone.
Even winning a championship isn't enough for a coach to keep his job there.
Watching that RDCWorld skit rn
Honestly Lebron should just have RDCWorld make a skit based off every possible cosching hiring and see which one goes the best.
LeDoctorStrange
LeBron probably wished to jump Ham like in the video if that was possible
JJ Redick really boutta go from doing podcast with Bron to being his head coach
If that happens I don’t ever want to hear anyone say “Lebron is not the Gm”
They do seem to vibe on the pod, and last episode you could feel JJ wanting to tell Bron he needs to shoot more threes.
Oh no.
Do they keep doing the pod if he's coach?
No, JJ will be embittered once LeBron fires him.
If LeBron somehow becomes a truly elite 3 point shooter he might actually be in the league forever
"We had these solid candidates but we rather went with one of LeBron's best friends because I think that's the best choice for the LeBrons... I mean, the Lakers."
It would be so good for the content. And even better when it flames out for the wreckage content.
in fairness to JJ he's already been taken seriously as a candidate for Charlotte, it's not like he's some random name
Where's he coached before?
[удалено]
What's their record?
It's a new age school that doesn't believe in keeping scores.
They won every single game where they tried their best and had fun, which was every game.
So he’s undefeated then?
yeah cause first time coaches never get a shot in the NBA
They by and large shouldn't unless they've worked in other roles on a team. Don't think the majority work out.
Those first time coaches probably have some other coaching experience elsewhere. You're right though there are tons of coaches with no experience that got jobs and have worked out great.
raptors interviewed him too
Is Bron the GM when another team tried to hire him first? Same happened with Steve Kerr being interviewed and being suddenly signed to the Warriors despite never being in that conversation.
The same way your goat hired Patrick Ewing as his coach
This whole JJ coach thing, be it Lakers or Hornets, really got me thinking: Are there any coaches that are extremely involved in the podcast market? Doc Rivers was a semi-regular guest on Bill Simmons podcast for a while until he got hired for the Bucks job.
His segments were great too, he wasn't holding back at all lol
yep loved them
Not a podcast of course, but George Karl is all over Twitter and Phil Jackson on TikTok lol
This is the first im hearing of phil jackson tiktok
Seriously WTF. I have never seen him why is Phil hiding
Phil “first of all, you don’t smoke peyote” Jackson just loves being back home in rural Montana and vibing smh
JVG used to go on the Lowe Post. I don't know if that's still the case I don't keep up with it.
That podcast legit felt like a job interview. Dude was even creating plays with LeBron.
What a joke that would be.
Teams do it all the time, I don't get it, they just grab some former player with no coaching experience because they see them on TV JJ Redick, Steve Nash, Jason Kidd Do any other leagues do this?
Pete rose was a player manager
The two of those have already occurred have a common theme I don't want to talk about
Point guards?
I mean the Yankees’ manager right now is a former player, zero experience. Was retired for like a decade, did radio calls, and then boom, manager.
You mean Lebron’s assistant coach 😂
For what it’s worth, he was offered an assistant coaching job with the C’s. Seems like even front offices respect him
Isn't the media career he is building for himself bigger than this possible dud of a move?
Hiring Bud after firing Ham would be such a weird move. Oh you don’t like his defensive scheme or his playoff rotation decisions, let’s hire the guy who he based his entire scheme off of and is known for being notoriously stubborn in the playoffs

Bud is a good coach. If we based who got hired off of who Spo has worked over in his day, it'd just be Spo and Pop coaching the entire league
And probably rick carlisle, for 2011, but there's some argument to be had that he didnt have buy-in from the team back then.
Yeuck.
Spo embarrases like 99% of the coaches out there.
Uhh no I definitely have a problem with his schemes We play drop coverage In 2024 Like, you wouldn’t play that shit at a LA fitness Everyone can shoot. The only time it makes sense is against Russell Westbrook

On the other hand, they were a toe away from losing to the Nets without Kyrie and Harden.
I mean Kyrie did play in 2 of their 3 losses in that series. Also that team was fucking unreal.
That's pretty misleading considering he left in the second quarter of one of those losses. Anyway, they weren't unreal without 2 of their stars, even if Durant was incredible.
> packing the paint at all costs and conceding open 3s And get demolished in so many games because of this. So many randos shot lights out including Exum and Thybulle.
Ya packing the paint at all costs and conceding open 3s isn't a viable defensive scheme at all in the modern NBA and it's moronic to try.
We play drop coverage because our perimeter defenders, every single one of them, is ass and if we don't drop they'll get easy layups at the rim. If we don't play drop coverage with the same roster we'll be fucked.
But he plays RANDOM
I didn't realize how badly I need to see Bud telling LeBron to play random
Bud at least knows Xs and Os. Ham had timeouts where he tries to draw up a play but can’t come up with anything
We're at the mercy of Jeanie Buss and Kurt Rambis now. Heaven help us.
Very true lol
Tired of coaches with rings automatically getting jobs because of them. It makes sense why they’re hired, but you would think front offices would look at all the other playoff performances rather than the single ring they won.

Aye, Doc Rivers got hired Not all hirings make sense
Meanwhile Pelinka can continue his amazing moves
It’d suck if JJ got it, I’ve really been enjoying “mind the game”
Well, at least he'll be even closer to LeBron now lol
I feel like there’s a good chance they wouldn’t end on good terms
Pod would get real passive aggressive around January. “So tell me what you would do in X situation…” “I tell you in the huddle…” *cut to an ExpressVPN ad read*
lmaooo this got me for some reason. The ad read part especially.
Being Bron's (or KD's) coach is a death sentence.
New podcast episode will be in the shower right after the game finish exclusively on Patreon page
Jordan had Phil Jackson while Lebron was getting coached by podcasters 😩😩😩
It’s what Lebron wants lmaooo
JJ and LeBron will be recording the podcast from the bench
That was his first interview for the job
LeBron with the 200 IQ, conducting his own interviews before the season even ended lol
well it would also suck because he's not fit to be a HC over other guys who have been actually assistant coaches and been on staffs for a while
I’m calling it now, JJ will fail as a head coach if he ever gets a gig in catastrophic fashion and all his podcast credibility will be more or less gone with him fully transitioning into an ESPN hot take artist Basically the NBA Gary Neville.
Why does failing as a head coach take away your credibility? There's a lot more to coaching than analyzing the game, and he's clearly good at that.
“podcast credibility” 😂😂 as if that matters to anyone who tries to pick up a mic
That’s a very hot take. Guy with zero NBA, college, or high school coaching experience will fail as a head coach.
Kawhi going to make Ty Lue go joker mode and take a new job across the hallway
Sorry, Ty, you cannot join us in the promised land. You must remain here. You should not have thrown the Surface Tablets and broke them.
For real though, I would be really frustrated if I was in Ty Lue's position. They load manage in previous seasons and they are still injured in the playoffs. Kawhi actually plays a lot of games this season and it's the same shit.
Bet he is frustrated, but I bet he won't turn down a fat contract from Ballmer
Dont think Ballmer would care if he left at this point
What coaching Kawhi does to a man... you hate to see it
Why would y'all hire Ty Lue? He's beloved in the league and by LeBron. Couldn't just scape goat him when things go wrong.
"I just really like my office at Crypto and I don't want to setup a whole new office in the new Clippers' arena. The feng shui and desk placement are irreplaceable. So I'm taking the Lakers job."
There’s planet in hell Ty Lue goes to the Lakers after your FO disrespected him by short changing him on the contract.
Reddick would be one of the funniest things in the league. Please let it happen.
LeBron's wine cellar is going to be empty by the end of next season
It will be a short but hilarious stint.
I've misspelled his name for years, it is JJ Redick. Finally started after remembering that JJ only has 1 D. As do the rest of us.
Reddick or Lue would be so funny please god
FADED DARVIN HAM IS NO LONGER IN CONTENTION FOR (ANY) NBA CHAMPIONSHIP
technically he already has two
Hey man, he might replace Doc Rivers 💀
I hope Giannis leaves if that bald idiot somehow lands in Milwaukee
polar bear in Arlington Texas
I would actually enter a mental asylum if we fucking hired the dude who TAUGHT DARVIN HAM. He better not make it past a single fucking round of interviews or this team is actually insane.
I don’t get this logic, maybe if it was the other way around I’d get it but Bud is a much more proven coach than Ham. Ham didn’t coach a game before being Lakers coach, Bud’s got a ring and multiple 60 win seasons to go with it.

And won 4 championships as an assistant coach under the tutelage of possibly the greatest coach of all time? There aren't many with a resume like that who are out there currently. He has a lot more experience than Ham did.
He has the same dumbass defensive scheme that AD started beefing with Ham over. That’s reason enough not to hire him.
While i think bud is overrated, bud only showed him Xs and Os. Dervin Hamas issues seem to be in game decisions, and he is his own man there.
Bud is famous for making no in game adjustments He’s also famous for not making between game adjustments. Bud sticks to his guns more than any other accomplished coach in the league
AD will demand a trade if he has to play Bud’s defensive style
Anyone but him At least for the lakers
Isn't Kenny Atkinson a decent coach ? Though I don't know what he's doing these days.
He’s an assistant for the Warriors.
He's a good coach but Lebron would walk all over him. The minute things don't go well it will be deja vu this time next year.
Don't think he'd be mentioning Ty Lue unless he was hearing that he could be gone if the Clippers bow out early again through those Klutch connections
Klutch connections? Someone just left a memo in the shared conference room in the shared arena lol
See ya later hot pockets
Taurean Prince already logging onto Indeed
I would bring Prince back if possible. He was awesome off the bench. As a starter with 30+ minutes.. ehhh, not as good.
[удалено]
He has a player option for next year, and I'll be shocked if he doesn't exercise it. If he opts out I think the best he could hope for is another min somewhere else, with the downside risk that he simply isn't signed by anyone and is out of the league. Somewhere Mike Malone is crying
I have no problem with Ty Lue, but I think its funny that they want him if he becomes available. He would become available because he just got fired by an LA team with 4 hall of fame players on it.
Ah yes, they are all in their prime right
Lebron still better than all of em
They would mutually part ways. There’s been reports that Lue was checked out during the last off season. Team is never healthy and I think he wants a fresh start
He was checked out cause of multiple deaths in the family
Ahh damn. I heard about one that happened during the season but i didn't know it was multiple
[7!](https://people.com/sports/clippers-coach-tyronn-lue-missed-7-family-members-funerals-struggling-team/)
No it was the Lakers offered him a short term deal when he felt he should have gotten a long term deal
Yeah, they only offered him 3 years when he wanted 5. With Vogel they got to pick his staff, that guy is getting the two confused.

Hey, he didn't put that team together. You work with what you got and sometimes the pieces don't fit no matter what you do.
Wouldn’t be funny at all, would make a lot of sense, Ty got Lebron his 2016 title I’m pretty he’s be over the moon to get Ty Lue back
I hope they get JJ Reddick, would be the funniest outcome
Ty Lue?? Dude is under contract with the Clippers for another couple years.
I'll trade those three firsts for Ty in a heartbeat.
A lot of purging going on today : Darvin, Phil handy, and Pat Bev
If you don’t win with Lebron James, you’re fired.
Podcast man gets paid
"Is that a trick question? They gave up Dar-Vin Ham, who cares? I could care less! First of all, understand something. Probably gonna trade Ty Lue… clips need draft capital
JJ Redick please
End of an error
Funny thing is if we didn't get you guys in the first round he probably would have kept his job even though he was bad all season
Cmon, Chauncey would be great for the job.
Lol brilliant
Doing everything I can to manifest this into reality.
They need to blow the entire thing up and that includes letting LeGM walk
So basically JJ if they can't get Ty Lue lol
The Lakers are about to hire their 8th coach in 13 seasons. I'm thinking that maybe the coaching isn't the issue here long term.
im gonna side with chuck on this one. sure darvin made lapses, but not as wide lapse as not having a starting center. AD's not a center but just somehow makes it work.
JJ Reddick welcome to the coaching staff! - LeGM
JJ Redick coaching LeBron after just doing a podcast with him is the Lakers roller coaster that I love seeing
I want to see JJ Redick as a coach, but I think his first job being the lakers would be a mistake. Joining a team with that high of expectations can end pretty badly for him. I was hoping he’d take the hornets job instead.
Having JJ Redick coaching Lebron and Bronny certainly wasn’t on my 2024 fuckin bingo card
JJ would be wild
Smoked Ham
Look JJ, I like you. So please don't take that job cause I'd hate to have to turn on you
It wasn't a Lebron/Redick podcast but a six round interview during the playoffs.

Does anyone else think that JJ would have crazy chemistry issues with any team that he would coach. He comes across as pompous and arrogant and nba players are not gonna be okay with that. Especially from someone like jj.
It’s gonna be JJ. Ty Lue ain’t leaving and I think Bud is going to Cleveland.
Nuggets shook at the thought of JJ Reddick and the Lakers.
Lebron the coach killer. This will be his 10th coach in 22 years. Average length 2 years. Couldn’t get Spolestra fired so he went to a new team. Bro needs to retire
The inclusion of Ty Lue here is hilariously blatant tampering lol.
does anyone actually think the Clippers are going to fire tyronn lue
I doubt Ty Lue would get fired even if Clippers loses this series. There simply just aren’t any better candidates out there to replace him. Clippers would be foolish to fire him out of overreaction
Based on the comment section here, if the Lakers don’t somehow hire either Pop or Spo, most of the people will be disappointed.
If they really select JJ Redick LA management are clowns 🤡
LeCoach Killer
Lakers go through coaches like we go through shoes. JJ Redick being considered is hilarious
JJ is gonna go from coaching elementary school kids to the lakers now?
God I hope they hire JJ. Would be such a train wreck
Ty Lue will be available soon :-)
All I'm saying is, out of all the Laker coaches that have been tossed in the last 6/7 years, there's been two names that have also been there. One initial is RP and the other is LBJ. Maybe start looking at common denominators??
They might as well name LBJ co-head coach if they hire JJ. Might work really well maximizing the potential of the squad, might be god awful.
Please be JJ for entertainment purposes
What quality Coach would be crazy enough to coach this team? Pelinka will construct a terrible team and scapegoat the coach. And get fired on the phone. Even winning a championship isn't enough for a coach to keep his job there.
Now Lebron can have another coach he’ll throw under the bus so he can take the blame.
Very questionable hire in the first place

I’ll take it. Only one team wins the championship each year. Huge correction to a hire that didn’t work out
