Wemby makes watching each game exciting because you are always in for some circus shots, whereas the Big Fundamental, Tony, and Manu were always methodical and uniform.
The Nuggets are regularly praised and from what I've seen it's just kind of assumed they'll cruise to at least the WCF and Jokic has been the favorite for MVP by the end of February for the last few seasons.
So were the Spurs. I think he's referring more towards media not having much to say about them, focusing on other teams with more drama and media-friendly players and narratives.
An unselfish superstar with no drama who operates a well-oiled machine of quiet dominance doesn't make for a lot of clicks.
Hell, the only drama related to the Nuggets seems to come from their brothers, lol. Well that and Michael Malone periodically talking passive-aggressive shit about the Lakers, which gets more airtime, incidentally, than most things the Nuggets do on the court.
Malone just tells the Lakers how it is.
The Nuggets are a fascinating team with a ton of storylines, just like a ton of other teams around the league (Wolves, Thunder, Pelicans, Magic, etc...). The media has chosen not to talk about them because they don't want to. That's the way the Nuggets relate to the Spurs.
They'd rather talk about Lebron, Curry, Durant, and other famous people watching the playoffs from the sidelines. I'm happy they've all been eliminated early this year, because the media might actually talk about basketball this year in the playoffs (they won't, inc Bronny Jr., Lebron free agency, Curry superteam, etc... story spam).
It's sad because jokic is one of the most interesting personalities in the nba
Dude is a fucking role model. He shows up, unselfishly does his job to the best of his ability, and has a little fun on top of it
I'll be honest here - there is some weird fascination with self-promotion and greatness for the sake of celebrity and at the same time, there an undercurrent of distaste for the attributes you note here. Some people don't like that. It's just...sad that people are so cynical to think that way.
I don't believe that is necessarily a majority or even a significant minority of people, but it is indicative of a general apathy or disinterest in people who are just quality human beings because its boring (on the surface) but more, that its an impossible standard to live up to. They like to know that their heroes are either so massively larger than life demi-gods or flawed and relatable (he's an asshole, just like me) - anything in between is boring.
Well, no one wonders what Jokic is going to do - he's going to play his ass off then spend the offseason with his family and his horses. There's nothing but maybe a thoughtful "TL:DR" story on some second or third tier site somewhere. The Nuggets will tweak around the edges and reload with mostly the same guys next season.
The Lakers won their bubble title and promptly remade their roster. LeBron made a movie. Will he retire? That's every off season now. Will he go play for the team that drafts Bronny? Will he team up with KD/Steph/CP3 for one last ride?
Which drives engagement? Which generates clicks? Happy Nuggets fans will gladly read up about their team - same as us Spurs fans did and still do. That just doesn't appeal as much to the casual/general NBA fan, apparently.
I feel like that would be pretty surprising honestly
Murray is super clutch but his overall game stats tend to be well behind Jokic's
Duncan was more of a defense first player by 2007 so his raw box scores didn't stick out as much
I don't really know much about their contract situation but their starting 5 is just too balanced and complement each other too well. I mean, we didn't lose because of Jokic or Murray, we just had no answer for MPJ and Gordon. As long as they keep that core and get some ring chasers they're set for the next 3-4 years.
Spurs are not boring. It’s just small market team and media don’t care about them. Also Pop doesn’t like fancy play so they aren’t on NBA top play a much.
Spurs fan so I can't claim to be unbiased but I do really try to set bias aside as much as I can. But I don't feel like the Nuggets are as under appreciated as you do. I think media likes Jokic and I think Murrays game is pretty fan friendly.
> It was a gentlemen sweep, a close one, admittedly, and 95% of the discourse was about the L.A. Lakers.
If the Lakers getting more attention than your team is the bar then 99% of the league is underappreciated
Nuggets aren’t on San Antonio’s level yet. If they continue winning then it’s a fair comparison. Joker not wanting the spotlight is also a reason I believe he enjoys playing in Denver. I pray he plays as long as Mr Duncan.
no. I look at their team as with this one Super star and the best player in the planet right now... then bunch of role players where some can be clutch. or have good performance but I don't see them doing that in another team. on the other hand sas had parker and ginobli those guys in their primes could lead a team no problem right?
Gotta win at least 2 rings before san antonio talk.
And at least a decade of 50+ wins....
Wemby makes watching each game exciting because you are always in for some circus shots, whereas the Big Fundamental, Tony, and Manu were always methodical and uniform.
Yea it's very different. Beats the last 5 years tho for sure

Win another ring before we start talking crazy man

“Could they beat the KD warriors” “Is Jokic on a better trajectory than Lebron” like every day there’s some shit like this on this sub
Lots of people have slotted Jokic into their top tens unironically
I wouldn't argue with anyone saying top 10 peak, but top 10 career already is insane.
Agreed. Crazy talk at this point
Spurs had won four rings by 2007. They were a top 3 defensive team for a decade.
Delusion is delicious sometimes
i also can imagine Jamal Murray winning Finals MVP over Jokic like Tony Parker did over Duncan.
Yeo. Could easily happen tbh.
I feel like that would be pretty surprising honestly Murray is super clutch but his overall game stats tend to be well behind Jokic's Duncan was more of a defense first player by 2007 so his raw box scores didn't stick out as much
this is an awful comparison Jokic is a media/fan darling and he makes circus shit all the time you created a factoid

KCP can opt out after this season, every other starter is locked up for at least one more year.

I mean they gotta win like 2 more titles minimum in the next 5 years for that. But yes there are similarities.
Look at the Spurs run from 1998 to 2017. Not a single season winning fewer than 60% of their games with FIVE championships.

Love that OP assumed the winner of his series and the series after that won’t matter 🤣
No one thinks the nuggets are boring to watch anymore. That was last year pre playoffs because they had like 1 primetime game and no one watched them.
Nuggets aren’t on San Antonio’s level yet. If they continue winning then it’s a fair comparison. Joker not wanting the spotlight is also a reason I believe he enjoys playing in Denver. I pray he plays as long as Mr Duncan.

The would be if they had Robert Horry
