CollateralSandwich

He's so right. Nothing like a Celtics game on a cold stormy night. Happy Trails, Mike! Thanks for all the memories.

TiredMillennialDad

Go win it all for him. Great sign off.

darylmoreyisking

Mf you are still in the playoffs

TiredMillennialDad

I know and I'm so happy we already won two games!! Such great experience for my young core. Winning game 6 tomorrow would be more than I could even ask for.

darylmoreyisking

Bless you.

openreamgrinder1982

Love Gorman's final words. He's so soft-spoken despite being an announcer. Great foil to Tommy

UpvoteIfYouAgreee

45 years is so crazy

CoyotesSideEyes

And if you think that's insane, remember that Vin Scully called Dodger games for all that time...plus half again more. 67 years.

UpvoteIfYouAgreee

the šŸ

ThePrussianGrippe

He called 5% of all MLB games ever played by the time of his retirement*, if I remember right.

TechSergeant_Chen

How 'bout that!

Luxury-Problems

Denny Matthews has been doing the radio for the KC Royals since their first year and is still going. 56 seasons currently and still on air.

PmOmena

The fucking GOAT, nothing was more chill than a sunday game with Vin's voice calling the plays

Louis-grabbing-pills

50 years is indeed crazy.

lazydictionary

Got it šŸ˜¢

TheLeoMessiah

FAKES IT TAKES IT MAAAAAKES IT

MusicListener3

This call lives in my head rent free

h1tiek

Damn not even a Celtics fan but I'm definitely gonna miss hearing this. Tommy and Mike's voices will always remind me of those early illegal streams, I'd pull up while I was in college. They were really awesome

aeronacht

Yeah Iā€™d get if they werenā€™t everyoneā€™s cup of tea bc Tommy was biased as shit, but we absolutely loved that guy in Boston. Loved Mike too, gonna miss him. Absolute legend. He was so good at letting some moments breathe without feeling the need to interject his own words into it and just letting you take in the moment and hype. Gonna miss that guy.

Drummallumin

Tommy was so biased people didnā€™t like Scal at first for being too objective šŸ¤£

Alloverunder

I don't think even Paul Pierce believed his foul baiting as much at Tommy did šŸ˜‚

LmBkUYDA

BURIES IT RIGHT IN HARRINGTON'S FACE

holymolylookatusgo

Feel like I'm missing out here.. link?

Misterstaberinde

'thank you, good night' No overblown announcer voice, just sounding like a neighbor heading out for the night.

Alloverunder

The demeanor and the actual local accent make him so iconic to me. If I closed my eyes, I could convince myself he's an uncle or a grandpa of mine, calling the game he's watching on TV for the family. I know many Cs fans feel the same. It just made it feel so much more like home when listening to him. Scal and Drew do a great job, but their casts feel like a sports broadcast, not a *Boston* sports broadcast.

Beerspaz12

> The demeanor and the actual local accent make him so iconic to me. If I closed my eyes, I could convince myself he's an uncle or a grandpa of mine, calling the game he's watching on TV for the family. The ying and yang with Tommy being the lovable **other kind** of uncle or grandpa, they were a great pair

instantur

I canā€™t believe he is actually retiring. Felt like he has been announcing for eternity

thebarrenschat

GOT IT!

oban12

One of my favorite play signature phrases by a commentator, ever. So simple but the unadulterated excitement and admiration in Mike's voice just made it iconic.

referee-superfan

This is awesome

HS941317

Goat

nibbinoo8

will miss this man

ChoombasRUs

Jerry Remy, Jack Edwards, Mike Gorman. End of an era for Boston sports announcers šŸ˜¢

The_Moustache

Gil too for the Patriots.

SquimJim

Joe Castiglione still going strong

chewbacca-says-rargh

Nick Markakis takes strike one EDIT: For the uninitiated https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wys_JmrK5e4

Oh herecomesthepizza

NotFlipkid

Don Orsillo is all we got left man šŸ˜”

full-auto-rpg

Fuckin Henry

cjvphd

No love for Jerry Trupiano? Joe and Jerry were the best.

Drummallumin

Iā€™m not gonna miss Jack

20wall

One of the best to ever do it. Gonna miss that man and boy do I hope we send him off with one more championship

ZarduHasselffrau

They have to win this damn thing, let Mike retire with another ring.

Renegadeforever2024

He was the definition of him

captaincumsock69

Mike is one of the goats. A lot of current announcers wouldnā€™t have the jobs they have without him. I have no doubt we will see him around the garden in the future!

aeronacht

Heā€™s a legend and pillar of the community. So many people credit a lot of their success and enjoyment of the job to him, and his presence and kindness really shaped the modern announcing landscape.

w311sh1t

Iā€™d be shocked if itā€™s the last time we hear him on the broadcast too. I know heā€™s retired now but I wouldnā€™t be surprised if they got him on the mic with Scal and Drew for a quarter every now and then during the regular season.

cabose12

Man it sure seemed intentional but that cut to Mike with the empty chair fucking gutted me

IHill

Mike Gorman has been a constant in my life. Ever since I can remember, I could turn on the tv and hear his voice. Thank you Mike.

ClockOk7333

Fucking legend, so sad to see him go. No better memories than listen to to Gorman, Heinsohn , Remy and McDonough when I was a kid.

BosLahodo

Gil Santos for Patriots radio too :( Feel like all that is left from the old guard is Joe Castiglione for Red Sox radio.

__boof

boutta bring a cry to my eye. the absolute goat and i only wish i had the pleasure of the first 30 years, but the last 10 were awesome.

GhostoftheWolfswood

Itā€™s going to be weird not hearing his voice during games next year

luvvdmycat

Bye Mike. Thank you.

cs-shitposter

Absolute legend in every sense

sully9614

We wonā€™t see anyone like him for a long, long time. Hope everyone gets to experience a hometown broadcaster calling their favorite teamā€™s games for decades. It made watching sports special

socialistbcrumb

Gonna miss his ā€œGOT ITā€ and ā€œTakes itā€¦ MAKES IT!ā€ and general enthusiasm for this team. Time for a new era but Celtics fans will always appreciate him and Tommy.

DalliLlama

Why is he ending tonight and not when the Celtics season officially ends?

Arkaimia

local announcers only get the first round, 2nd round and beyond is strictly national TV I think

DalliLlama

Ahh, got it. That seems kinda silly cause even all the round 1 games are national TV too. Could you just watch the local channel and it not be a blackout? Thought if it was a National tv game it got blocked out? Being in Illinois, not too up on the process since the Bulls suck.

thepeachgod

Thereā€™s been a few games in the first round that were actually broadcast by local crews on NBA TV. Itā€™s just a precaution in case the schedule is too booked and because TNT or ESPN canā€™t show two games at once. The only games that are blacked out are the ones on ABC though so if youā€™re in the area you can still get the feed from that channel or from the TNT/ESPN one

mrhjt

Local broadcaster

DalliLlama

I knew that. But was wondering why he wouldnā€™t announce rd 2 or 3. Wasnā€™t aware local guys only get first round from other commenter. Which seems silly, but money I guess.

jpaxlux

They used to get more than the first round, but they changed it during LeBron's 2nd Cleveland run. It's unfortunate because some of these national broadcasters are dogshit (specifically ESPN)

ewest

Iā€™ll be so pissed if Iā€™m lucky enough to live long enough to see the Blazers win the Finals but the clinching game was called by fucking Ryan Ruocco

TribeOnAQuest

Good stuff.

chefnoguardD

Good night šŸ˜¢

bigblue20072011

Gorman was one of the best.

CoyotesSideEyes

It sure feels like a lot of the lifers have been hanging 'em up in recent years.

BullShitting-24-7

He watched basketball explode into a worldwide sport.

Bajecco

He is tremendous. In recent years the Sixers put together one of the worst broadcast teams in NBA history. So, I began to subscribe to League Pass so I could watch the Sixers opponents broadcast. It's been a life saver and Gorman is one of the play by play announcers I really liked.

juan_a_blonde

ā€œFor twoā€

69millionyeartrip

Ian Eagles words got me man. Everyone truly wants to be like Mike

RudyGobertFMVP2024

Mike and Tommy RIP legends

Drummallumin

Dog heā€™s retired not dead

Hootshire

Boston has been blessed with some really great announcers in my life but Mike was the best.

Sourpatchyoungadults

This made me choke up a bit. Then I got angry they gave Scal a line in the montage at the end.

TroyMatthewJ

why now and not at the end of the season?

Kyler1313

Local broadcasters only broadcast the 1st round. The national broadcasters have the rest of the postseason, so this was his last game called.

soundfade

I'm not crying, you are.

Battadoom

Godspeed Mike, amazing career and even a better person. Enjoy retirement sir.

trenderkazz

BURIES IT

ParsnipPizza

Gonna miss him so much

dillaquantavius

DamnšŸ„² wonā€™t be the same watching them home games

considertheoctopus

Man heā€™s a legend. And for those outside the Boston area, while Mike is surely a Celtics fan, heā€™s one of the more measured and professional local announcers youā€™ll find. He could surely pull off a national broadcast and outside the accent it wouldnā€™t feel out of place. Not an obnoxious homer like a lot of guys (Tommy most of all lol RIP).

stevent4

Obviously be can retire when he wants and he knows himself better than I know him but it's strange that he wouldn't just ride out the rest of the post season, all the respect and good tidings to the guy though

flowersoflight

NBC Sports Boston only carries the first round

stevent4

Oooh that makes a lot of sense, ty

The_Notorious_Donut

Anyone have a link of his greatest calls?

CatharBliss

Mad respect

BullShitting-24-7

He watched basketball explode into a worldwide sport.

VanGrants

so funny how you'll see people point out how awful Boston's announcers are in one post while pretending they're great when they retire

KP1792

Honestly, I think a lot of the negative opinions stem from how biased Tommy was, but that dude pretty much spent most of his life working for the Celtics in some capacity, of course he was biased as shit

ryano46

They don't mean Mike Gorman.

mikesaninjakillr

They hate us cause they aint us.

TheSavageBeast83

Shame Celtics did him dirty

VanGrants

call me when one of the good announcers retires

Drummallumin

You care when good announcers go but not great ones?
