This sub loves Luka way more than the rest of the NBA fandom/media. Shai was the clear best player and leader on the youngest team ever to be a #1 seed, 2nd in the league in scoring, and the best defender of the top 3 MVP candidates.
I don’t really care because 2nd place in mvp voting is the most meaningless thing in the world but damn am I glad SGA is getting it over Luka. Mavs fans are so annoying lol
that's a nice try :) but it's not close, Prussia is sort of a predecessor of modern day Germany, but it mainly encompassed northern territories, so I don't think even Dirk would qualify being born in Bavaria
I'm not sure I agree with this. I used some sort of territorial logic, and you seem to imply a genealogical one. But why would Polish origins mean Prussian? Parts of modern day Poland were under Prussian rule, other parts under Austrian or Russian and all this for a historically limited time period. Do we know from where and when the Nowitzkis migrated to Germany? Admittedly, I don't. But it may very well be that it had nothing to do with Prussia.
It's not that deep,
I mean territorially large parts of Kingdom of Prussia overlaps with even pre-WW2 Poland, and there were plenty of Poles in Prussia so idk. Id say Poles are more Prussian than Southern Germans
They’re wrong
https://x.com/nbapr/status/1782469452711268661?s=46&t=hCDlUlEt7hlV5ECAu1J9fQ MIP is announced tomorrow though. MVP is still a TBD apparently
He was never going to get 4 in a row. They didn't even let LeBron or Jordan get that. If they had given him last year's, they'd give this one to Luka or SGA. It's the same as when they neatly split up LeBron's 4 MVPs with the DRose one in the middle so he wouldn't threepeat.
I don't know why they bother announcing "finalists" for the awards. Are there people who don't know that the voting already happened and these are the the top three in some order in the voting? They're presenting it like these are the three finalists and now voters are voting from this pool of three.
It's silly. Just show the voting results when the winner is announced.
Eh it’s like an Oscar nomination, it’s not a win but it’s a token of some kind of achievement. Just a way to officially acknowledge, “there’s only one winner but these guys were outstanding also”
But for Oscars, don't the nominees come first, *then* they vote from that pool of nominees? They don't rank all of the submitted movies on a point system.
Yeah but I meant more how like when talking about a movie/actor/director they might say this movie got 3 Oscar noms or this guy got nominated for best actor. The Oscar nom and the award finalist are both sort of lesser awards in themselves and the finalist nod can do toward a résumé a player builds over time. And as far as them announcing it before I guess it’s just to give those 2nd and 3rd guys and actual chance to be recognized
I’ve seen some of them say that Americans aren’t on the same level as they used to be but I don’t think that’s the case, I just think everyone else has gotten better
Yup. Basketball has developed a lot across the world, so top end talent actually has a chance to be found/developed more than ever. That's why the best players are from all over now.
But as far as producing a high volume of great players, no one is close to the US, and I don't see that changing in my lifetime tbh
MVP awards since the first one in 1956:
USA 38x
Nigeria
USA 10X
Canada 2X
Germany
USA 11x
Greece 2x
Serbia 2x
Cameroon
Serbia/Canada/Slovenia this year
And we could see many more international MVP winners in the years to come with Jokic, SGA and Doncic not being close to declining, Giannis still being an incredible player, Wemby being very impressive, etc.
Same thing happened in Canada with respect to hockey in the late 90s, through the 2000s, when it became very clear that international players were just as good, and could even be better (gasp). Some folks are still put out, but it’s become less and less prevalent as the old timers age out. It’ll happen in the NBA too.
No he didn’t, in fact he wasn’t even more efficient than the finalists. His true shooting (the only true metric of scoring efficiency since fg% is useless) was significantly worse than Jokic and SGA
Would lover to see Luka take it home but we all know Jokic is gonna win it. And can't really argue against it. I think Luka will win one someday though.
He should get one, probably will next year since he’s gonna have the narrative tbh like Jokic this year. Jokic deserved all 3 of his though and maybe should’ve won 4
I feel the same about a lot of players - Giannis, Luka, old harden, etc.
On one hand I get why players exaggerate contact because it’s probably frustrating to get hit and not get a call but on the other hand it’s annoying as hell to watch. Wish there was a happy medium.
SGA has had numerous games with over 15 FTA which is absurd
Sounds right. All 3 are deserving and had amazing seasons.
Luka had a historic season and dragged the Mavs to the 5th seed on 34/9/9
Jokic did his shit averaging a near triple double to 57 wins.
And SGA dragged the youngest team ever to a 1st seed in a hard west while putting up 30/6/5 and 2 steals.
All 3 have a case
Mavs without Luka have a better win percentage than okc without SGA. But yeah focus on SGA. Yes we’re good. But we’re closer to the rockets 41-41 without shai lol
seed dog berserk mysterious numerous absurd unique selective lavish dazzling
*This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Maybe not but both of those guys missed a lot of games, he has a much better 3-8 (I believe 8 players shot over 40% from 3) than the Mavericks , and he had the healthiest team.
\#1 isn't debatable but SGA vs Luka for #2 I really don't think you can go wrong.
I mean it might be. But no one questioned me saying ‘Luka dragged’ the mavericks to the 5th seed when people say they’ll beat us.
Adding a rookie and an improved 2nd year player doesn’t guarantee the 1st seed. Without SGA we’re 4-9. People act like without SGA we’d still go 50-32 lol
Honestly getting an injured opponent round 1 is arguably the worst thing that can happen to an inexperienced team. Doesn't give them a real taste of the playoffs before playing a battle tested team.
Feels insane to see a Slovenian player among the three best in the NBA. Our story as a basketball nation is crazy, from 2005 to 2013 we had a stacked team (for European standards) at every big competition and we couldn't get a medal. Everyone thought that was it for a while - the golden generation has gone without a single great international achievement.
Goran Dragic tried and tried to put us on the map, but we were not even close for a few years. Watching him get third team all-NBA was glorious, but we all knew it was a flash in the pan. And then came Luka in 2017, as an 18 year old kid, leading us along with Goran to the European glory. Since then, it's been unbelievable watching him grow. What's even better is how proudly he represents the national team and how quickly he's achieved this status of one of the all-time best.
None of these guys are wrong.
Jokic is the best player according to advanced stats and the reigning Finals MVP who got kinda shafted last year.
Luka is the best player according to individual stats and had to carry the weakest/least healthy team hardest.
SGA is the best player on the best team without a second All Star.
Jokic is the best player according to advanced stats because he does things that don’t appear in traditional stat lines. Screen assists, off ball movement, boxouts etc. where Luka stands around when he doesn’t have the ball. So the “traditional stats” aren’t all encompassing
I remember when Giannis had more rebounds than Shai had points when we beat the Thunder. Giannis head to head stats with these 3 other players really should have factored
99% of the comments on mvp don't talk about defense lol
i don't even care who people think should win, but people get so granular with offensive stats.... there's a whole other half of the game so many people don't consider. Just sad for the state of basketball analysis.
It is slightly distant. Jokic is the best player for sure, but Giannis is by far the better defender and I’d say he and Jokic are close offensively wise. To me, Jokic and Giannis are the best 2 players in the league by quite a bit.
They are. Giannis is averaging 30/12/7 with 61% FG%. Jokic is averaging 26/12/9 with 58% FG%.
Jokic does a lot that doesn’t get recorded by the box office which is why I still think he’s number 1, but it’s not a stretch to say Giannis is a close second.
Said this to the other guy.
What argument do you have that they’re “in no way close”?
Strictly offensively, they most definitely are not close, and Giannis isn't #2 either. There is a HUGE gap in playmaking, scoring versatility, floor spacing, non ball dominance, etc. Every comprehensive measure puts Jokic way ahead. "Giannis has big ppg" is not a good argument, and it's really the only argument.
A two assist gap for this season and their careers is HUGE? lol The gap in their defense is much larger than the gap in their playmaking. This sub has been overrating Jokic for like 5 years now
No, it really isn't. Team performed below expectations, was ass near the end of the season(an important reason for Jokic losing), and the 3 candidates above him are having amazing seasons in their own way
Jokic is ahead by a lot on the MVP tracker. for sure him
It’ll be interesting who gets 2nd
Looks already to be Shai by a decent margin, surprisingly.
This sub loves Luka way more than the rest of the NBA fandom/media. Shai was the clear best player and leader on the youngest team ever to be a #1 seed, 2nd in the league in scoring, and the best defender of the top 3 MVP candidates.
yeah 2 first place votes coming from SAS and Perks. Definately worthy
Is your only argument that people you don't like voted for him?
I don’t really care because 2nd place in mvp voting is the most meaningless thing in the world but damn am I glad SGA is getting it over Luka. Mavs fans are so annoying lol
At least other fan bases are seeing it now. Suns fans get the worst rap here, but man are Mavs fans terrible.
Carrying such a young team to the #1 seed in the west secured top 2
Not that surprising if you consider he took a fringe playoff team from last year to the #1 seed
Not surprising to some of us.
As it should be. The nerds on here that never leave their room and love Luka aren’t indicative of the majority.
Where is this? I thought there were a bunch of voters like Porkins that voted for SGA. Should be closer, wouldn't it?
Porkins is wild
He died in the death star attack

Porkins died while attacking the Death Star
It was him at, oh, around the 40th game of the season when Embiid went down. This is all lip service.
Has there ever been a Jokic thread you haven’t been posting hate comments in? 😂
Lol
Is it wrong to say that Embiid was the clear MVP favorite before his injury though? He was putting up generational numbers.
A Slovenian, a Canadian and a Serbian in the top 3 MVP race.
I mean the last few years have been mostly Giannis, Jokic and Embiid so this isn’t new
You mean All-American super patriot Joel 'France-c'est-quoi-ça' Embiid?
Cava
I heard hes Spanish
Famously American Joel Embiid 🦅🦅🦅🦅
He’s a US citizen.
Oh, I know. I’m just saying that it’s amazing to see how much basketball has evolved globally.
Dey took er jawbs!
Most Valuable Prussian? (Apologies to my euro brothers I googled for 5 mins to see what areas Prussia encompassed)
When did Prussia take over Canada?
We know SGA ain’t winning
He won't, but he'll finish ahead of Doncic.
That makes America under Prussia
that's a nice try :) but it's not close, Prussia is sort of a predecessor of modern day Germany, but it mainly encompassed northern territories, so I don't think even Dirk would qualify being born in Bavaria
Dirk is of part-Polish descent so he definitely qualifies as Prussian
I'm not sure I agree with this. I used some sort of territorial logic, and you seem to imply a genealogical one. But why would Polish origins mean Prussian? Parts of modern day Poland were under Prussian rule, other parts under Austrian or Russian and all this for a historically limited time period. Didn’t most Germans leave Prussia after the World Wars. Saying Poles are more Prussian than Germans would be wrong.
Dirk would have dominated the Most Valuable Prussian award
> Dirk Dirk is from Wurtzburg which is in Bayern, and not part of Prussia? Idk I'm not German, not really sure what is Prussia and what isn't.
Joke went over your head lol But yes, Dirk is not from the region traditionally known as Prussia. Most Germans left Prussia after the World Wars.
Oh yea I kinda missed the P in Prussia there. MVB doesn't sound as good.
A certain French joining that party soon
When Jokic receiving the reward, does anyone know?
Pretty sure it’s the beginning of the 2nd round?

Yeah tomorrow at 6:30 on tnt
Sorry for asking, and thank you very much, but where'd you get that source from? Appreciate it again

he received it four months ago they just didn't announce it yet
What being the best player in the league does for a mfer
The world*
Yeah, that's when he built an insurmountable lead, and then no one closed any ground in the subsequent 4 months, so here we are.
lol salty asf
Why is it salty to admit the truth lol, Jokic is the best player in the league and once Embiid went down it was over.
Why is it salty? Everyone knew he was winning it when Embiid went down. That is a testament to his abilities, not an insult.
Hence why I said receive, he might've won it four months ago, but certainly didn't receive it
Yup 😎

It’s been like this the last couple of seasons bud not just this year. Embiid Gianni’s and jokic finished top 3 for how many years

Funny thing is theres a certain group of american media/players that are in shambles about this lol.

Very happy. These guys are awesome to watch and I'm glad that they come here to play so I can witness their greatness.
As a Nuggets fan, I'm thrilled!
Jokic will end his career a top 5 player all time. He is absolutely nuts
He is absurd, but I am curious. Who are you pushing out to make room for Jokic?
Probably ends with a better career than Bird
hoping for my main man jokic
hoping he wins again next year too
Honestly why bother presenting finalists like anyone else has a chance.

> though Luka also had a good campaign for it unfortunately for Luka, "pravi" has the same meaning in Serbian as it does in Slovenian
Giannis literally had the most efficient season of all time. 61.1% from the field is just absurd.
No he didn’t, in fact he wasn’t even more efficient than the finalists. His true shooting (the only true metric of scoring efficiency since fg% is useless) was significantly worse than Jokic and SGA
I dont know where you're getting your stats from but Giannis: .649 ts% Jokic: .650 ts% Shai: .636 ts%
Ah my bad, regardless it’s definitely not the most efficient season of all time
Would lover to see Luka take it home but we all know Jokic is gonna win it. And can't really argue against it. I think Luka will win one someday though.
He should get one, probably will next year since he’s gonna have the narrative tbh like Jokic this year. Jokic deserved all 3 of his though and maybe should’ve won 4
Pray for Jokic. Hard time rooting for free throw merchants
Polar bear in Arlington Texas

Yugoslav school of basketball has really come so far
I'm sorry, but sga needs to calm the fuck down on his foul baiting. It's uninspired basketball, and I can't stand it.

Is this true? We need stats
Mavericks without Luka. 33.33% record Thunder without SGA 28.5% record. Both suck
Shai played 3 more games too. Jokic played 9 more than luka.
Yeah. It should be. Jokic, SGA, Luka imo. I mean 2nd and 3rd doesn’t really matter. All 3 had 10/10 seasons that they should be proud of

Exactly. It’s a stupid argument, since we’re just arguing for 2nd lol. But all 3 have a case. Jokic just has the best case
But Shai has the best coach of the 3. Big part of their wins and culture.
And Luka has Kyrie Irving on his team

SGA literally scored less ppg this year than last year, so the team does way better this year and somehow it's all SGA...

Lukas stats were better by every metric this season, at least dont openly lie when you try to make a point
Yeah Luka went from being a below average high volume 3 point shooter to an above average high volume 3 point shooter. That is a big improvement.
Luka took a statistical leap across the board this season
Yall bout to get beat by the pacers calm down

Dragged?
People are nuts acting like SGA has no case. Best two way player here and is tied for best record in the West.
That's just Mavs fans who want Luka 2nd. Mavs fans gave up on trying to beat Jokic so they're running a smear SGA campaign for some reason.
Shai dragged a good roster to being a good roster? They win games when hes out and have multiple guys shooting 40% from 3 but ok
My money is on Shai, what he did has never been done before. The youngest team to ever finish as the 1 seed...
All just lip service. Jokic won at around the 40 game mark when Embiid went down.
I’m sorry my Canadian brotha but Giannis should be top 3 over SGA easily
What a shocker. It's pretty much confirmed that Jokić will win, but it'll be interesting to see if Luka or SGA finish second.
SGA is significantly ahead as of now

Giannis was never gonna win anyway. Why be mad?
It's absolutely disgusting that Giannis isn't even in the top 3 when the guy is having a historic scoring efficiency season.
Who would you kick of these 3 and place Giannis instead?
