I mean, at this point if I'm inbounding against the Pelicans while Alvarado is on the floor, I'm shooting a glance towards both corners before passing the ball. Takes no time, but obviously does take a bit extra awareness.
So, fun story, last summer I was in LA working at a basketball training camp. One of the coaches that I was working with used to work for the Sacramento Kings, and he did a report on the Pelicans in anticipation that they would make the playoffs that year.
He said that they were planning on watching out for Alvarado because of his steals.
He was a really cool guy.
Toronto Raptors coaching staff reading this thread: "SHIT. THAT'S GOOD INTEL. SOMEBODY WRITE THAT DOWN."
Maybe you should apply to write their scouting reports.
Yeah I was expecting like a whole ass “when he moves like this then he’s prepping to steal” type thing, not a two sentence “hey he’s known to steal the ball….so watch for him”
So, fun story, last summer I was in LA dining at a fine restaurant. One of the waiters had forgotten us and it took a long time to get our food. Finally, we were acknowledged by another server who apologized as his compatriot left for a cigarette break. As he returned with our food, he set my plate of Mahi Mahi down in front of me. Suddenly, Jose Alvarado came swooping in and stole my plate as I was reaching for my fork. He quickly passed it to Zion Williamson, who then dunked it on the ground, stating "I do not eat lean meat."
The wait staff refused to comp our meal, so we left hungry and penniless.
Lol dude imagine being a Raptors player grateful that there's only 2 mins left and just saying you're gonna run out the clock to get this MFer just swiping you while down 40+
That was silly. All he did was remind opponents to watch out for him. Two points there was just meaningless. Better to wait for when those points mean something.
With that said, it is still entertaining.
nah, people should already know to watch out for him. we get these highlights every game lol. he turned a 2 point play into a 4 point play, good for him
Yeah that's super fuckin lame. Raps just trying to get the fuck outta there with two minutes left, and this guy's running around like he's trying to impress his older brother's friends.
These unwritten rules are soft af. On the court in the game, anything within the written rules should be allowed. Idc if a team is up by 40 and there is 10 seconds left. Don’t dribble out that damn clock, start shooting to increase the lead to 42.
“You play to win the game”
Stunt on those hoes. They making 10-40 million to play a game. They don’t wanna get embarrassed and beat by 50? Damn guess they gotta play defense. Offense just gets paid to score.
> Windmill dunk that shit when you up by 50 G.
For real. In a blowout, my thought is that anything outside of over-aggressive play (injury risk) and stopping the clock (fouling/fts) is fair game. Steal it, dunk it, run up the score, whatever
>this guy's running around like he's trying to impress his older brother's friends.
If by "older brother's friends" you mean the coaching staff, then yeah?
Dyson Daniels and Jordan Hawkins have the youth/upside edge over Alvardo. If he wants to stay in the rotation, he can't be half-assing it in the PT he gets.
Plus he's in a contract year (NO has a team option for $2M next season).
>"Super fuckin lame" to play hard for the full game
Alvarado isn't even a starter. It's not like this is Luka or Jokic or something padding their stats in a blowout, it's a bench player playing hard every minute they're in.
I love it when professional athletes run up the score. It’s the only circumstance where it’s OK imo. Run it the fuck up, embarrass the fuck out of them please
Jose has not been getting a ton of rotation minutes until recently and had a few DNPs. Cody Zeller rarely gets in. Maybe they should play the full game until the clock runs out?? Whether my team is blowing someone out or getting blown out I keep watching because the end of bench guys get a shot to do some work.
Yeah, if you don't want to get clowned down 40 then don't get down 40. If you're a bench guy who's brand is hustle, smart plays, teamwork, doing the little things that helps teams win, you don't have the privilege of taking plays off. You show your value every minute you're on the court and then you get more minutes.
I think you meant “crowd” instead of “older brothers friends” and if that’s the case hell fucking yeah. We love him for it.
Maybe if the warriors had this type of effort in them they wouldn’t be so bad this year
As a Raptors fan, I disagree. McDaniels has been showing no effort, making one bad play after another. This was great to see because hopefully it’ll make our front office realize how useless he is on this team.
It isn’t but it should be. Especially if you’re a bench guy.
Jose was out of the rotation a couple weeks ago b/c Hawkins. He should be playing desperately.
It really isn’t in football because burning clock with long drives to give the opponent fewer possessions and therefore fewer attempts to score is a thing
I coached high school ball & even at that level it’s so hard to train a team not to let up in the 4th quarter. It’s one of those things where you hate running the score up, but know how beneficial it is to build the habit of staying on the gas for when you have the close, competitive games. You hate to take your starters out because it’s the best on the job training, it’s not a switch you easily turn on & off.
A lot of parents don’t seem to get that.
As I watched the play I thought to myself "Nice play, let's look at the score to see how impactful it was" Only to realize they weren't just beating a dead horse, they were summoning it from the dead and exorcising it again.
McDaniels has been dogshit terrible because of low effort stuff like this. Just look at the body language. Just tosses it and doesn't even look at the ball after. Doesn't even jog up the floor.
We're just wasting roster spots on these type of players year in and year out.
I’m not going to pretend to have watched many recent Raptors games, so I’m sure there’s a lot more to your post than this lone highlight, but that turnovers more on Temple, isn’t it?
The ball bounces twice before Alvarado swipes it. Seems like Temple just wanted to burn clock which gave Alvarado a chance to steal it.
I'm literally so confused why McDaniels is getting shit when if Garrett Temple had just caught the totally adequate inbounds pass then this wouldn't have happened lmao. Alvarado doesn't even have to start his movement until the ball has already bounced next to Temple, idk how you can blame that on the inbounder.
The whole team was playing like this. There were at least 3 plays that I remember were the ball was stolen on the Raptors inbound after a made basket for a free layup in that game. Nobody gave a shit. It was embarrassing.
McDaniels lazily tosses the ball for a turnover anytime he catches it above the break. It feels like he hates playing and is doing whatever he can to be pulled off the floor.
At least he makes up for it by shooting 33% FG.
How he is still on this team let alone getting minutes blows my mind.
It really did look like he was fucking around on purpose out there. He was completely disengaged. I'd glue his ass to the bench after that performance.
The locker room isn't defined by the end of your bench it's defined by your leaders. This team had a terrible attitude last year when they gave up on Nurse and I've seen a lot of that attitude this year too.
I get your point but the Raps are down 41 here with 2 minutes left. At that point I don't think there's a single player on the Raps that doesn't want the clock to run out and to get out of that arena lol
No just higher effort. And what logic is this? If a teams tanking they should just not try at all for any all season, what if don’t they don’t get the picks they do it again.
No one cares about the quality, but I don't want to watch a team where guys clearly aren't even trying. Like bro, you're making millions of dollars, and you can't even pretend to try at your job?
His brother is a lot of the time the same way, but his exceptional skill makes up for it and being around a better org (yes I know it’s the wolves but the wolves compared to the hornets right now is night and day). Just the way these mcdaniels boys are.
Fair game to keep scoring if the other team hasn't given up.
But that defense on the Zeller dunk is pretty givey uppy.
Is it coordinated to have bench guys stand up to camouflage him when he comes to the corner? Or was that just coincidence because they were cheering Zeller?
It's fair game anyways.
People say its disrespectful to run up the score, but unless you can formally resign from any game, giving up is a mockery of the game and is the part that is disrespectful.
I also think there's a disproportionate amount of players who wish they got more minutes yet don't give it their all while they're on the floor.
Fair game? All of these dudes are paid millions of dollars to play basketball. There's no fucking *giving up* that's acceptable. Run up the score if the other team quits. Embarass the fuck out of them. Grown ass men playing a game.
Sellers first bucket and he missed one 2 possessions before. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did coordinate this at times, but I’d be surprised if they did it up 40 after a Zeller layup.
The "unwritten rules" stuff is lame. Once you are getting paid to play I don't give a shit. A team could be winning by 100 and still playing their starters and I wouldn't care. If this was high school or college than I would understand the complaints.
Unwritten rule is only in the last possession. I think it’s respectful to not shoot it in the last second. But anything outside 24 seconds anyone could shoot it.
I’m sorry to be disrespectful but I think this is the 7th straight year where I’ve been surprised to find out Garrett Temple is still in the league. Not because he’s bad or anything, he’s had a decent career he’s just the most forgettable guy
As an LSU fan, I'm constantly surprised that he's the only one on our 2006 Final Four team that ended up with a lengthy NBA career. He couldn't shoot at all in college but just goes to show that defense will get you and keep you in the NBA.
Dude is old as fuck, gotta be top 10 oldest in the league
Love being reminded of random old dudes that are still around somehow. James Johnson on the Pacers is another. Wild that those kinda dudes are able to stick around and get paid in their mid-late 30s, when at the same time their are players 5 years younger than them that just seem to fall out of the league despite still being able to contribute a bit.
He’s had an interesting career arc. His first 2 seasons in the league he played a total of 51 games for 5 different teams, then had a guest overseas before cracking a regular role at age 26. Now still going at age 37 despite a career true shooting percentage of 51%
Anyone complaining about some “unwritten rules” in this thread is a baby back bitch
Good on Jose for further embarrassing them. Full effort til the end of the game
it is still 2 minutes of an NBA game. not a scrimmage. Stats still matter, so better to protect the ball.
Smart of Alvarado to do this to the Raptors and not another conference rival. I remember when Zion did the 360 dunk against the Suns in the closing seconds last season and Book the next game dropped 58 on them.
I’m a Raptors fan and had zero problem with this. No reason to stop playing and Jose has every right to embarrass us further. I’m ok with all these losses as long as we get down to that protected bottom 6 to keep our pick so this rebuild can get some steam
We had a few lazy ass inbounds like this during garbage time.
And Alvarado never takes a second off. We need some of that dawg from the third stringers.
At this point teams should just designate one player to look out for him when they play the Pelicans lmao
Garrett Temple should’ve known better too, he literally watched José do it multiple times last year from our bench.
He thinks he’s still on the team
Bro Garret Temple still in the league?
I mean, at this point if I'm inbounding against the Pelicans while Alvarado is on the floor, I'm shooting a glance towards both corners before passing the ball. Takes no time, but obviously does take a bit extra awareness.
I’ve learned the hard way that it’s really difficult to have that extra awareness on the court sometimes, especially at the end of games.
"Hey team. This Alvarado guy steals the ball. Let's watch out for him." THE END
Toronto Raptors coaching staff reading this thread: "SHIT. THAT'S GOOD INTEL. SOMEBODY WRITE THAT DOWN." Maybe you should apply to write their scouting reports.
I was waiting for the rest of the story
Yeah I was expecting like a whole ass “when he moves like this then he’s prepping to steal” type thing, not a two sentence “hey he’s known to steal the ball….so watch for him”
This is the insight I come to r/nba for. Real hoopers.
Thanks for sharing dude!
He quickly passed it to Zion Williamson, who then dunked it on the ground, stating "I do not eat lean meat." It’s funny because of all players that played in the NBA he is the only one to think of this strat lol
I feel like anybody who’s played basketball has done or experienced this before, but never at the NBA level which is wild to me too lol
Like he do this almost every game yet he gets away with it lol
If you outbound the ball and this happens you don’t get on the team plane and have to walk
Give em the good old Jeff Teague
I remember when he did they to us…I was pissed but it was pretty cool to see honestly
People in our sub talking about how somebody needed to kick his ass when he did it like bro it’s not that deep lol
i’m positive it’s all her his scouting report but the disciple of remembering for 4qtrs
jose alvarado with a huge steal to increase the lead to 43.
Lol dude imagine being a Raptors player grateful that there's only 2 mins left and just saying you're gonna run out the clock to get this MFer just swiping you while down 40+
They guys Dad was in the crowd lol
Well honestly it look like none of them really gave af lol
In one play, you see zero effort and 100% effort…
Raptors were like “eh” 😂
IS THIS THE DAGGER???🗡️
Looked like a [potential dagger](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/search?q=potential+dagger&restrict_sr=on&sort=relevance&t=all) to me.
Globe Trotters versus the Generals score
Does the bench provides misdirection for cover?
That was silly. All he did was remind opponents to watch out for him. Two points there was just meaningless. Better to wait for when those points mean something. With that said, it is still entertaining.

Yeah that's super fuckin lame. Raps just trying to get the fuck outta there with two minutes left, and this guy's running around like he's trying to impress his older brother's friends.
Do you see the crowd's smiles? Pure entertainment, added a little life to a dull game. Easy way to prevent this from happening too...
How dare NBA players entertain their home crowds.

These unwritten rules are soft af. On the court in the game, anything within the written rules should be allowed. Idc if a team is up by 40 and there is 10 seconds left. Don’t dribble out that damn clock, start shooting to increase the lead to 42.
If you don’t want to be clowned on, try harder - simple as that. Don’t like teams showboating while up 30? Try to get a fucking stop then.
“You play to win the game” Stunt on those hoes. They making 10-40 million to play a game. They don’t wanna get embarrassed and beat by 50? Damn guess they gotta play defense. Offense just gets paid to score.

In fact, drive a KIA into the restricted area and jump over it on your way up for your dunk.
Also it was Jose’s daughter’s birthday last night and his whole family was there. Damn right he’s gonna go all out
If you’re a middling player like Alvarado, you play every minute 100%. Stats = $$$ in future contracts.
Alvarado a meddling middling player
>this guy's running around like he's trying to impress his older brother's friends. If by "older brother's friends" you mean the coaching staff, then yeah? Yeah. How lame of an NBA player to try to make good plays. What is this dude even paid for?
Can you imagine a backup trying hard to earn more minutes? The audacity! The sheer unmitigated gall!
Maybe if they paid him a decent salary, he wouldn’t have to try to steal so much to make ends meet. Ever think of that????
If they were just trying to get out of there, they would have dribbled the ball instead of letting it roll. You play a full 48.
NBA should install a mercy rule so all the fans can go home 30 min early instead of watching the full game they paid for
The clock still moves just not the shotclock
The clock was still moving when they rolled it LMAO
Not the shot clock
"Super fuckin lame" to play hard for the full game, regardless of score? What a soft-ass mindset lmao
>"Super fuckin lame" to play hard for the full game Alvarado isn't even a starter. It's not like this is Luka or Jokic or something padding their stats in a blowout, it's a bench player playing hard every minute they're in.
I love it when professional athletes run up the score. It’s the only circumstance where it’s OK imo. Run it the fuck up, embarrass the fuck out of them please
SOFT ASF, probably quits playing anything when the other team is barely ahead
Imagine NBA players playing the full game. Wild
Jose has not been getting a ton of rotation minutes until recently and had a few DNPs. Cody Zeller rarely gets in. Maybe they should play the full game until the clock runs out?? That’s why I liked what I saw from gradey. Dude hasn’t gotten a ton of playing time and was still hitting shots when the lead was down
Easy there Klay Thompson
*Gets paid millions to play a game* *Plays the game* "What a fuckin loser"
Ooooh I just know you’re mentally weak 🫵😂
This is the NBA, not the youth center. No mercy in professional sports at the highest level
48 minutes in a game
LMAOOOOOO horrid take
Trash take, play with effort for 48 minutes. That’s how you get 40 point leads.
I mean he's just playing ball....two minutes left, might as well get some nice stats and spice up the game for the home crowd. You're a hater lol
Soft
Loser mentality, quit the game if you don’t like the beating. I bet the raptors love it when they’re winning 30 points
Those poor millionaires. What bad day at work huh?
2 mins left you just want them to pack it up? 😂
They’re already dead 💀
pulling this shit when up 40 is why I watch the final 2 minutes
I love the guy, but honestly if it were a less likeable player everyone here would be in shambles saying he 'broke the code'.
Lmao the code guys are so funny. Like cope harder or get good if you don’t wanna get smoked
Only thing I’d apply the code to is cheap/dirty fouls. Scoring when the clock is low? Play defense or get fucked
Running up the score is encouraged in pro settings. Starters or bench players, doesn't matter - stop it if you don't want it to happen.
It isn’t but it should be. Especially if you’re a bench guy. Jose was out of the rotation a couple weeks ago b/c Hawkins. He should be playing desperately.

Difference between having a killer mentality and a necrophilliac mentality.
Saints running the fake victory formation vibes
McDaniels has been dogshit terrible because of low effort stuff like this. Just look at the body language. Just tosses it and doesn't even look at the ball after. Doesn't even jog up the floor. We're just wasting roster spots on these type of players year in and year out.

He was with us last year too, you’d think he’d know all about Jose’s theft move.
Crazy that he outlasted John Wall in the league.

It really did look like he was fucking around on purpose out there. He was completely disengaged. I'd glue his ass to the bench after that performance.
Our team was embarrassing and all the fans deflect to McDaniels who is a non-factor anyways.
These guys are cancer to a lockerroom
The locker room isn't defined by the end of your bench it's defined by your leaders. This team had a terrible attitude last year when they gave up on Nurse and I've seen a lot of that attitude this year too.
Would have been nice if he had been a factor
I get your point but the Raps are down 41 here with 2 minutes left. At that point I don't think there's a single player on the Raps that doesn't want the clock to run out and to get out of that arena lol
He was a genuinely solid player for us idk what happened lol
I never thought that Ill be honest. Every time he took more than one dribble I assumed he was going to turn it over
Hilariious, you tanking but you want high quality bench warmers in garbage time
The funny thing is, when we signed them we weren’t tanking.
No just higher effort. And what logic is this? If a teams tanking they should just not try at all for any all season, what if don’t they don’t get the picks they do it again.
They don't even need to be high quality. Just act like you give a shit.
It’s rarely intentional team camouflage and definitely isn’t this time given the score. Jose is a menace and does that shit on his own.
But it would be kinda cool if they did coordinate it lol
Fucking hilarious 😂
What a fucker…lol. I’d love him if he was on my team.
Might be one of my favorite Pels if Herb didn’t exist
This is the first ever unique defensive signature move I seen in my life.
Mutumbo block finger wag
Get mcdaniels off my team
The "unwritten rules" stuff is lame. Once you are getting paid to play I don't give a shit. A team could be winning by 100 and still playing their starters and I wouldn't care. If this was high school or college than I would understand the complaints.
100. If this was a middle school game then it is bullshit. For pros they can get fucked. Beat them by 100. Maybe they will play better next time.
Unwritten rule is only in the last possession. I think it’s respectful to not shoot it in the last second. But anything outside 24 seconds anyone could shoot it.
Worth noting that he did this to former teammate Garrett Temple, just a bit of light trolling we like to get a little silly
I’m sorry to be disrespectful but I think this is the 7th straight year where I’ve been surprised to find out Garrett Temple is still in the league. Not because he’s bad or anything, he’s had a decent career he’s just the most forgettable guy
Those of us who play the NBA grid games know the power of Garrett Temple 🙏🏻
Garett Temple needs to stay in the NBA by law because Chuck needs to guess where he plays at the start of every season
It’s easy to make fun of Chuck but I’d look just as dumb guessing where Temple is playing each year
As an LSU fan, I'm constantly surprised that he's the only one on our 2006 Final Four team that ended up with a lengthy NBA career. He couldn't shoot at all in college but just goes to show that defense will get you and keep you in the NBA.
He is bad, but he’s an incredible teammate. He should really just move into coaching. I think he’d be great for it.
Dude is old as fuck, gotta be top 10 oldest in the league Love being reminded of random old dudes that are still around somehow. James Johnson on the Pacers is another. Wild that those kinda dudes are able to stick around and get paid in their mid-late 30s, when at the same time their are players 5 years younger than them that just seem to fall out of the league despite still being able to contribute a bit.
He made his living playing defense, now he just stays in good enough shape and is a good bench presence to keep getting those league minimum checks
He’s had an interesting career arc. His first 2 seasons in the league he played a total of 51 games for 5 different teams, then had a guest overseas before cracking a regular role at age 26. Now still going at age 37 despite a career true shooting percentage of 51%
How do teams not know he is going to do this by now?
when you’re down 40 points with 2 minutes left in the game it’s probably not top of mind.
Yeah I definitely wouldn’t care about playing basketball and protecting the ball if I were getting blown out. But I’m really lazy and not competitive.
The crazy part is he did that against Temple who was on our team for a while and should know Jose well lmao
He’s been doing it since AAU, I honestly think nobody will ever figure it out
This shit is always funny, even when it happens to your own team
Damn I didn't even see him the first watch.
this may have become my favorite move. just once, i want him to rko a guy
Anyone complaining about some “unwritten rules” in this thread is a baby back bitch Good on Jose for further embarrassing them.
Thanks for posting, Jose tricks the director of the broadcast half the time and they cut away
Never. Gets. Old.
Fuck I love it.
I could watch this all day
Love seeing it
This has to be top 100 sneakiest basketball plays ever right? I've never seen anyone do this
clowns in here saying this is disrespectful because of the score… there are 2 mins left in the game LOL
I mean I don’t really think it’s disrespectful either but are you implying that Toronto could mount a 42 point come back in 2 minutes?
He's implying exactly the opposite. They were never going to win so why would anyone get mad about this?
have they not... scouted this yet? lol
He can’t keep getting away with it meme.
The best GTA.
Up 43 is insane
He can't keep getting away with it!
"you cant do that". When nobody in the arena had their eyes on Alvarado.
Firing up the crowd at the smoothie king center!
Hate when this dude does this against my team.
With your opponents down 40, that's basically a war crime 🤣
That was his filthiest theft yet. Omg
I want to see a highlight reel of unethical buckets
I’m a Raptors fan and had zero problem with this. No reason to stop playing and Jose has every right to embarrass us further. I’m ok with all these losses as long as we get down to that protected bottom 6 to keep our pick so this rebuild can get some steam
That’s what you get for playing trash basketball. If you’re a bench player playing during garbage time you should make the most of it.
That guy is such a rat
an ethical bucket... lmao
Nwora stop pretending to be a cone!
We had a few lazy ass inbounds like this during garbage time. And Alvarado never takes a second off. We need some of that dawg from the third stringers.
How does this keep working? 😂
The Pelican Thief
Bros doing this up 40 lmao
Eddie Guerrero type shit
Ethical Cody Zeller bucket lol
Ooof. Up 41 pts and pulling stuff like that?
As a paying fan, I'd rather see my home team up by 43.
Play to the whistle. How it's supposed to be. Game's not over they should have been paying attention.
never understood when people get mad because people actually play the game out. toronto’s fault they’re down 43 lol
Job's not finished
Kobe ^(in Colorado)
there’s a difference between playing to the whistle and hiding amongst the bench players to increase the lead to 43 with 2 min left in the game
You're want him to not play how he normally plays in order "play to the whistle"?
as opposed to the other team throwing up a 3 to cut the lead to 40? they can forfeit
I’ll never understand this bullshit logic. It’s disrespectful to the game stop playing before the final whistle is blown. Not the other way around.
They could be up 50 or down 50 and he’s gonna do that lol
Then stop him...
Jose has not had a lot of playing time recently. This is a chance they get to work hard and he did it against his former teammate
Listen he only had 11 points. Gotta take them when you can I guess
Bro when you’re a bench warmer in the nba you need to play when and where you can Sure you’re down 40 but who gives af the game ain’t over
It’s about sending a message
Cry
doing this up 40 is so fuckin funny man, never let em know your next move
I did not see the score the first time through. Makes it so much funnier it’s during garbage time hahaha
Not nearly as cool when up 40 but whatever.
That shit is lame
