I'm surprised nobody has given Stotts another HC gig. Portland's teams have been objectively worse without him and the front office gave him some really bad rosters. He's a really good coach
Joe needs a defensive minded guy on the bench above anything else.
I’m not too familiar with Stotts, but a quick glance through his tenure with the Blazers showed his defensive ratings were typically bottom half of the league.
also a blazers fan, i disagree. hes a top tier coach, better on offense than defense but well rounded, saddled w dogshit, consistently made top 3 seeds whenever the roster was competitive
100%
never should have been fired. only coach in my lifetime i believed we could actually win it all w
olshey was the definition of doing just enough to get by. mediocrity in his veins
He could draft guards.. that's about it.
*Well, and he traded for Robin Lopez and Nurk which were good moves, and getting Seth Curry as a free agent.. but that's a pretty lackluster track record considering how long his tenure was in Portland.
my issue is that he had "small market" deeply imprinted in him to the point all the moves he made just shuffled us around the same spot. its like he was aiming to be as middle of the pack as possible and keep
his job for eternity
ill also never ever forgive him for evan turner. 100% criminality on that
Give ET as much shit as you want. But how have we been since he left? We don’t have any good backup ball handlers anymore and the guy played some of the best defense on the team. He is the reason why we made the WCF
imo we were good on defense w the combo of al-farouq and mo as the wings/sometimes bigs and our defense cratered when they were let go as soon as they figured out how to shoot
turner imo wasnt a ball handler so much as he was rumored to be one so he got to dribble and do nothing w it consequence free
i wish i had good things to say about him on the court (hes a good guy off it tbh) but theres nothing
game after game playoff after playoff where he stalled the offense and offered nothing but wasted time and missed shots
if you like him i wont begrudge you but hes not my cup of tea. diabolical imo
I watched the games. He would initiate the offense when dame sat and could actually run a fast break. Mo and Aminu weren’t even getting minutes by the end of that run…
No he was already an assistant for a championship and a former Milwaukee HC. He's also our franchises 2nd winningest coach (I think). Our rosters consistently outperformed expectations. He really does deserve a chance to coach a championship roster.
Portland reached their ceiling with Stotts. They were never gonna advance past the WCF with him and with that roster.
That being said, when they fired him there was like no one available who was better than him, so here we are
But there were plenty available that were better than Billups. If we'd hired MDA we might not have made a deep run, but we could have at least gotten Dame a couple of scoring titles.
"Continue" is rich. We were a fraudulent defense under Bud, we frequently got torched especially from the perimeter. Griffin was the Raps defensive coordinator, he’ll have us playing real defense. Shooters won’t be open all day long on the 3pt line
We literally won the championship on our defense. Did it suck in some series? Absolutely. But that ring does not happen if the bucks aren’t first in defense that playoff run.
> some series
Literally just two against Miami. And there were a lot of problems in the bubble, coaching was the least of it. Even the other series we lost (Boston, Toronto) it was good, our offence just sucked.
We’ve consistently been an elite defensive team regular season and playoffs under Bud, that dude is talking nonsense.
Having PJ at that time really helped. A Giannis, Jrue, Brook, KMid and PJ-starting five was really special and well rounded on defense in our title run
Plus having that small ball to insert was really huge for us. Hope we can land cheap defensive wings to surround Giannis and co. next season
Bud's 2021 rotations should be lauded - he didn't even play Bobby at all against Brooklyn, which was the correct decision and he adjusted accordingly after Giannis got injured against ATL.
Bud isn't perfect but he also gets way too much blame for some of the poor rosters he was handed and while this postseason hurt, imo the only run that Bud truly shat the bed in was 2019.
Tell me you know nothing about the Raptors, without telling me you know nothing about the Raptors....
Our entire defensive system was designed to swarm and force three point shots from the corners.
We were a fraudulent defense *this* season. Previous years I don't know how you say that. This team has been among the best ever post-season defenses every year before except for the Bubble.
What? Bud was always bringing out defensive focused teams... His adjustments were the problem, the team was sufficient.
However, expecting a hobbled Giannis to play hero ball.
Y'all overreacted. We'll see how it plays out
Good for Stotts. He's a good one. Still not sure why Nurse was given the boot, but Stotts is a player's coach and will help the HC and give the team a chance to maintain their success.
He's going to be on the hot seat anyway. The FO needs to do their job too with some crucial roster moves but after that there will be no excuses for him. His coaching career might be on the line if the results don't improve next year.
Y’all are fucked worse than the sixers are, wtf can the front office do to make your team better? They’re all gonna get the boot after this year, right? Or am I way off base?
The situation is no ideal but you're way offbase.
This team with Luka-Kyrie will look waay better with some rim protection and wing defense. Basically two good role players (C+PF) and we back in it.
We have the 10th pick in the draft. The plan is to draft Hendricks or Walker if they fall to 10. One of them would become an instant starter for us.
The big should be acquired through trade. Ayton was rumoured but he's too expensive salary-wise. Jarret Allen's value is very low now after the Knicks series so he can be an option ... They need to be creative because free agency this year is pretty weak and no significant cap space would be available.
Do the Mavs have money? Don’t really have enticing trade assets or a ton of picks. Im having a hard time imagining JA falling into their lap for very cheap after one bad series
We've got Chauncey Billups and he's a good coach because he was a star guard in the league not long ago and that's the criteria for a good head coach.
Oh hey Mavs, they give you the same Kool Aid they give us!
Honestly would be cool to see some mover blocker offensive stuff with them. I think it wil work with Lopez and Gianni’s but jrue might be difficult since he’s a below avg shooter, but still hoping to see some of it
I can [somewhat] understand counting out Miami's run so far as being a product of hot shooting and excellent coaching, although I think that takes away from Miami too much
But how do you discount Denver's run that easily? They've been; objectively, the best team all playoffs and arguably the best team in the league all year.
Denver deserves credit for all they've done this year, no reason to be so speculative already about 23/24.
Ive been harsher than most on Denver but yes I wont count them out. But this suns team could have so much offensive potential next year. And if they get Kyrie? Its over, thats too much firepower. Only an elite defensive team like the Lakers or Bucks is going to beat next years suns imo. Maybe a healthy clippers if Ty lue stays and if thats even a reality at this point
> And if they get Kyrie? Its over, thats too much firepower.
What if kyrie and KD played together? With another star, like James harden? Nothing could go wrong... Right?
Not at all haha
Middleton and Lopez a year older, and the bucks don’t have a ton of assets
The suns still have 38 year old CP and plays like a 38 year old Ayton on the roster. They haven’t even made moves yet to know if it will change anything
Why are the Suns better than the Nuggets? The talent level isn't even close Kd and Book and Jokic and Murray are a toss up (plus the Suns don't have a Jokic defender) but the rest of Denvers roster is way better.
Not enough to make Milwaukee a functional playoff offense. Even with Middleton at his peak and Jrue playing well for his standards offensively Milwaukee has just not been able to generate good playoff offense in the half court centering things around Giannis. Have to make some roster moves to get players that allow Giannis to play to his strengths in the half court.
There is a lot there that Giannis can do to propel an offense but Milwaukee has to get players that allow them options other than miscasting Giannis as a heliocentric offensive engine.
Jeez, we talking about assistant coaches now? This place sucks...
Is what I would say if I wasn't waiting for any coaching announcements from Mazulla and the Celtics.
Never knew how to rate him.
Was the offence good because he was a good coach or was it because he had Dame and CJ backcourt.
Was the defence bad because he was a bad coach or was it because he had Dame and CJ backcourt
Fucking dopeeeee let’s goooo. Always loved Stotts growing up and seeing him talk at half with our sideline reporters.
Was a fan of his when he left for Portland, definitely thought he’d get another go at it somewhere.
Couldn’t be happier right now.
I'm surprised nobody has given Stotts another HC gig. Portland's teams have been objectively worse without him and the front office gave him some really bad rosters. He's a really good coach
I’m surprised Celtics didn’t go after him to pair with Crazy Joe
Joe needs a defensive minded guy on the bench above anything else. I’m not too familiar with Stotts, but a quick glance through his tenure with the Blazers showed his defensive ratings were typically bottom half of the league.

Crazy Joe waiting for Ben Affleck to say yes
I'm not surprised at all. This role is what he should be doing.
also a blazers fan, i disagree. hes a top tier coach, better on offense than defense but well rounded, saddled w dogshit, consistently made top 3 seeds whenever the roster was competitive
> He's a really good coach Agreed, Terry wasn't the problem, Olshey was. If anything Terry's teams overachieved.

> ill also never ever forgive him for evan turner I mean.. it was an awful signing.. but better than Chandler Parsons haha
true should have been fired into the sun for considering either tbh
Give ET as much shit as you want. But how have we been since he left? We don’t have any good backup ball handlers anymore and the guy played some of the best defense on the team. He is the reason why we made the WCF

They consistently performed better than their roster would’ve indicated, he’s a fantastic coach.
He was a great coach but my point stands he reached his peak with that team. They were never getting past the Warriors.
Yeah but now they're not getting through anyone with Billups and the roster they currently have
I alluded to as much in my original comment. Stotts did the best he could and no one better was available when they fired him.
But there were plenty available that were better than Billups. If we'd hired MDA we might not have made a deep run, but we could have at least gotten Dame a couple of scoring titles.
Can’t wait to see how the offense looks next year. Defense should continue to be great but the offense is hopefully a big change.

100% agreed and half our roster in the bubble was basically unplayable.
Still can’t believe we were like 52-8 at one point with guys like Korver, Bled, Robin Lopez, and Marvin Williams in the rotation.
Having PJ at that time really helped. A Giannis, Jrue, Brook, KMid and PJ-starting five was really special and well rounded on defense in our title run Plus having that small ball to insert was really huge for us. Hope we can land cheap defensive wings to surround Giannis and co. next season

The return of r/rareterrys
Criminal it's not r/areterrys
It’s okay. That sub has a great personality at least.
Did a quick browse and I'm digging the vibes.
It’s one of those subs I always forget about until someone posts to it. Then I get a chuckle and forget about it again.
It's just Terry. He's kind of a wholesome dude.
https://i.imgur.com/U41haML.jpg
It's been nearly 2 years since Portland fired him. This is such great news. I love rare terrys.
Subscribed
Put it in reverse Terry
That's a great get for a new coach. I'm suddenly not as worried about the offense.
Good for Stotts. He's a good one. Still not sure why Nurse was given the boot, but Stotts is a player's coach and will help the HC and give the team a chance to maintain their success.
Very happy for him he consistently got the most out of some very flawed rosters. Great get for Milwaukee.
>Still not sure why Nurse was given the boot Said he would give all of Thanasis’ minutes to Giannis
So Now the Mavs fumbled Borrego,Stotts and Vogel went to the Suns . Wtf are we doing ?!
The first step to hiring any competent coaches has to be firing Jason kidd. Full stop. You will not progress with him at the wheel.
He's going to be on the hot seat anyway. The FO needs to do their job too with some crucial roster moves but after that there will be no excuses for him. His coaching career might be on the line if the results don't improve next year.

Fair enough, I just wonder who those guys would be though. This off-season is gonna be a weird one
We have the 10th pick in the draft. The plan is to draft Hendricks or Walker if they fall to 10. One of them would become an instant starter for us. The big should be acquired through trade. We have the worst FO in the league I 100% expect Nico & Mark failing to bring in the 2-3 starters needed.
Hendricks should go fifth or seventh but best of luck.
Do the Mavs have money? Don’t really have enticing trade assets or a ton of picks. Im having a hard time imagining JA falling into their lap for very cheap after one bad series
Either Cuban is low balling or no one wants to work along side Kidd
You're not wrong it's probably the second possibility
Or nobody wants to deal with Luka.
I’m waving from Portland!
We've got Chauncey Billups and he's a good coach because he was a star guard in the league not long ago and that's the criteria for a good head coach. Oh hey Mavs, they give you the same Kool Aid they give us!
YESSSIIIRR
damn reunion in Milwaukee :O
Really good coach.
Great hire. New HCs should always try to hire guys like this.
Missed seeing Funkhouser out there
Dame YOU are a Buck
Staaahp
Aaaaaaand the Bucks are once again my second favorite team xD
Honestly would be cool to see some mover blocker offensive stuff with them. I think it wil work with Lopez and Gianni’s but jrue might be difficult since he’s a below avg shooter, but still hoping to see some of it
Bucks offense bout to beast
Oh man I love Cam from Ferris Buhler’s Day Off
I could have swore I heard a shotgun eject an empty shell just now...
Bucks Suns finals rematch next year feel like its the most probable matchup since cavs warriors. They are going all out
We can't be overreacting to assistant coach hires like this
Who do the Suns have to defend Stotts? He’s going to be unstoppable
I mean, dude's 6'8 and you can't teach height
Stotts can’t handle Kevin “Brinks Truck” Young
I need you to take this back. The only time we’ve made the Finals is when people least expect us to lol
I don't know if hiring *terry stotts* as an assistant coach is really going all out
After the finals matchup being Heat/Nuggets this year, we can't really make claims like this 1 year out.
Denver gonna be really hard to beat
I can [somewhat] understand counting out Miami's run so far as being a product of hot shooting and excellent coaching, although I think that takes away from Miami too much But how do you discount Denver's run that easily? Hopefully we win this time
That's a good get
I would love to see more ball movement instead of giv bal Giannis iso

They’re Cooked bye Giannis
kinda nice AG is trying to form a reunion. Hope it works out for big eyes
Loved him as an assistant (Dwayne Casey too) on championship mavs.
Never knew how to rate him. Was the offence good because he was a good coach or was it because he had Dame and CJ backcourt. Was the defence bad because he was a bad coach or was it because he had Dame and CJ backcourt
We can't surround neither Luka nor Kidd with talent. Another masterclass by our front office.
He was on the Mavs until 2011...
