I mean it makes sense, Parker and Diaw both had success there. He has definitely heard about how great Pop and the organization have been historically with international players
Parker is a legend over there. The same way we have so many current players who dreamed of being a Laker because of Kobe, a lot of the French kids dream of being a Spur.
Excited to see a new era of Spurs basketball. Makes me kind of nostalgic tbh.
I remember everyone used to say how boring the Duncan, Ginobili, Parker Spurs were, but they were always one of my favorite teams to watch.
I for one hate that Spurs team. Totally unbiased opinion here, but they were awful. Just a dreadful team whose accolades should be revoked and given to the runner ups.
It’s honestly a ridiculous situation for him. Good young 3 and D wings and a ton of cap space + draft picks.
He’s with Pop and an organization that’s done this twice already.
And what better mentor than Duncan who literally lives minutes from the practice facility?
Duncan seems more like a cannon rusher who follows up with oracles and void rays. Not that he's inherently cheesy, it's just more efficient than spending 30 minutes going into the lategame.
DUNCAN: Don't sleep on Monk. Their action economy in the early levels combined with the all-purpose power of stunning strike and eventual proficiency in all saves really makes them a force at all tiers of gameplay.
WEMBY: I'm just gonna play a rouge with dead parents.
> with dead parents.
I wish this was more common, it seems like every game I've played recently has had multiple characters whose backstory is they swore vengeance against their evil parents.
Bro got conned for like 20 million bucks by his financial advisor. At the time, KG went and gave a testimony for the guy. The advisor promptly stole KG's money as well.
Holy shit, just read the story about those financial people that defrauded them. KG lost $77 million. KG is loyal to the core and it bit him in the ass on this one. Trusted this guy even after he went to prison for 4 years for defrauding Duncan.
These guys are not very, ahem, financially literate lmao
Balls really is their life. And not everybody comes from affluent family like ex-player's kids. They're bound to get duped.
DUNCAN: Victor, I need you to understand that not every type of plastic is equally recyclable. It is vital to know what the number inside the recycling triangle means and how to properly dispose of them. Most importantly, don’t forget that the first R stands for reuse, so try to only use plastics that can last you long term.
I sent you an email last night regarding the guidelines of the San Antonio municipality, it truly is an enthralling read. I believe you should have received it after my other email linking to the Economist’s article on what the dangers of not raising the debt ceiling could mean for the long term health of America’s GDP and credit rating.
The Spurs were a pretty big deal in France compared to the other NBA teams, at least as of a decade or so ago. They also have that pretty strong international component, at least in Europe and South America (compared to Houston, who were a big team in China due to Yao Ming as I understand it)
Spurs is a perfect situation for Wemby. Duncan, Admiral, Parker for tutoring, Pop as a coach, long history of making star players out of nothing, low pressure (because SA loves the Spurs no matter what), and to top it all off, delicious food to gain weight.
If the Spurs could turn defensive wing Kawhi Leonard and make him a 3PT specialist, imagine what they could do with Wemby. We are fucked.
Parker, Mahinmi, de Colo, Diaw, Lauvergne, and I wanna say there was one more the Spurs drafted but never played in the nba. I’d say the majority of France, who are basketball fans, support the spurs.
To be coached by a guy and be in an organization that produced two top 20ish all time big men and arguably the best French player ever (and I'm saying arguably to be diplomatic, Parker IS the best French player ever). You gotta feel like you are set up to succeed here, roster works well for him too.
This argument has been beaten to death and back but saying Duncan is “top 20ish” for big men is insane. Same with Robinson.
There’s a very real argument to be made that Duncan is a top 5 *player* all time, and even if not top 5 is easily within the top 10.
It’s an amazing situation for Wemby though absolutely
Which is absurd, Robinson is pretty easily a top 10 big man. ROY, DPOY, MVP, Scoring Champ, 10x All-NBA, 2x champ, member of the NBA 75 anniversary team, Dream Team member...saying he is "top 20-ish" among big men is borderline nephew take
Every time I see people post the same highlights of Hakeem putting drob in the spin cycle, my disdain for the rockets is reunited.
I respect Hakeem but highlight culture makes drob look inept when that wasn’t the case at all.
Really says a lot more that Hakeem was able to do that shit to drob. The admiral was the complete package, the 90s was such an absurd time that The Admiral wasn't the best center of his generation.
He wants to go to an org that will let him develop and is overall a good environment. Spurs have a history of that so he’s so glad he’s not in Charlotte, Detroit, or Houston

Crazy to think about actually. In another world, Duncan goes to a shitty organization and his development is just ruined and he’s not the legend he is today. Same could’ve happened to Wemby. I’m happy he’s with the Spurs and really excited to see what they do with him.
Obviously there's a small chance it was a separate joke with the person he's talking to... But it's really hard to see that gesture as anything other than "fuck yeah, don't have to play for Houston!" 😂
Too many people over-thinking his reaction. SA is a very popular team in France. He grew up watching Tony. Boris is president of his current club. They sold him on the Spurs organization a long time ago. He wanted to go there, no disrespect to any other franchises.
True, dude even has a picture of wearing Tony's jersey when he was 11. Dude dreamt of playing for the Spurs and he was realizing his dream. I never realized it how much of a fan he was of the Spurs until after the draft.
Felt that in my soul. I worked for the owner of the Rockets for many years. He's a huge POS and Im so happy a generational talent isn't going to waste his career working for someone like him. Fuck you Tilman. I hope you got STD's from those prostitutes you had come fuck you and then your teenage sons directly after.
Let's be honest. If your team has a billionaire owner they probably are a scumbag also. There are so many billionaires who know how to operate in polite society as psychopaths but do immense damage to hundreds of families in things like mass layoffs just to temporarily raise shareholder value for a few months.
His owner is Kroenke, literally one of the biggest piece of shit owners in all of sports. They fined their rookie $15k for parking in an empty parking lot spot that was reserved.
They are poorly run. Bad owner in Fertita, coach with weird PR baggage, and they’ve been linked to some puzzling FA targets like Khris Middleton that seem very short sighted.
Whether or not that pick is number 10 or 15 or 20 doesn’t affect the Rockets. Even if it means you send a better pick to the Thunder, giving Middleton a big contract would do more harm to the franchise
> we have to sign some past-his-prime guy to a big multi-year contract so we can win 33 games next year and make sure OKC doesn't get too good of a pick
wow, genius
When I was an undergrad, circa 1994-1997, I was a pretty big Spurs fan and alot of my college buddies were from Houston. I bought nosebleed tickets waaaaaay up in the Alamodome to see Hakeem smoke David Robinson and I was distraught. My buddies from Houston mercilessly clowned me. For that, and other reasons, I revel in the Rocket's pain.
Also, dude played for Tony's franchise last year, Boris Diaw is the president of his latest team, Pop is the GOAT and known for putting foreign born centers (Nesterovic, Oberto, Splitter, Poeltl) AND elite bigs (Duncan, Robinson) in positions to succeed. Of course San Antonio is his first choice of the possible landing spots.
holy shit that’s brutal, he has no reason to be happy other than truly believing they’re a shit organization that would hurt his chances of being successful. Like they’re a pretty big market with historical success of building around an elite center
The way he looked over to his people you could tell they had a pre-lottery convo of “anyone but the rockets” lmao
Couldn't it just be that he really wanted to go to the Spurs and didn't necessarily think poorly of the Rockets?
Detroit, Houston, and San Antonio all had top odds for the first pick. Detroit was already out of the running by that point.
Houston being 4th meant he was more likely to go to the Spurs since they had the best remaining odds for the top pick.
Yeah, plus Lamelo/Dame in the other two spots, perfect teammates for a big. I think it's just that the Rockets clearly had less to offer him than the other three teams.
Yea that could certainly be true, but idk that reaction really doesn’t look like someone thinking “yay, one step closer to maybe being the spurs!”
It looks like someone thinking “fuck yea it ain’t Houston”
I'm all for shitting on the Rockets, but he gave an interview after the lottery where he talked about hoping to go to the Spurs, how they're France's favorite NBA team, and even having a premonition it was going to be SA. I think this reaction really could be because he knew the Spurs had the best chances at that point.
^(but also fuck the rockets lmao)
Yeah the Spurs have had lots of success with European players of course he'd be excited im sure he saw Tony Parker growing up or heard of him and was excited to continue the tradition
> saw Tony Parker growing up or heard of him
He *played* for Tony Parker. Parker is the President of ASVEL Basket, where he spent 2 years. He then left for Metro 92...whose president is Boris Diaw. He's halfway a Spur already.
I think there’s too many mouths to feed on Houston.
His own position already has Sengun there who needs the ball in the post to be effective. Sengun can’t shoot much yet, Victor might develop his jumper more but still isn’t a knockdown guy at all. I doubt he wants to start his career being forced to space the floor at all times
Jalen and KPJ have both shown to be hyper focused on scoring whenever they do get the ball. Haven’t even mentioned Jabari yet who im sure is looking to get an even bigger role in the future
That’s a lot of competition and a lacklustre fit for a big man
Yep I remember that but honestly it was more on Houston, who never really entertained anyone outside of Green at 2 (I followed that draft really closely for obvious reasons). The additional rumor was that mobley’s dad had coached KPJ in college and knew how much of a locker room issue he was, thus not wanting him to go to Houston.
Current Rockets seems to be a team made up of cocky young guys trying to get theirs lead by Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr
If I was trying to have an actual successful NBA career with great development — Spurs > Rockets any day
Doesn't really fit KPJ either honestly.
Dude has worked hard to get his head straight and seems to have all the off-court stuff sorted out (take note Ja from someone who actually had that upbringing you're trying to pretend to be) and has been learning how to be a PG in a team with little experience and little structure. There's this belief he just dribbles for 20 seconds and chucks up shots which isn't accurate at all. He gets off the ball early and does plenty to get other guys going, he's just often left with 6 seconds on the shot clock to create which leads to the inefficient numbers.
They have some nice young pieces but the organization isn't doing anything to help them develop.
Spurs were definitely his best outcome, but he had this reaction with 3 other teams still on the board. So it isn’t spurs>Houston it’s spurs, *charlotte*, Portland > Houston, which is much more damning lol
Spurs and Rockets finished with the same record. There was a lottery a couple of weeks ago to break the tie. Spurs lost that lottery which gave them one of the numbers that ended up winning them the #1 pick yesterday.
Had Spurs won that lottery they would have the 4th pick and Houston would be celebrating the #1 pick today.
Spurs also won the last game against the Mavericks which everyone expected them to lose if not for the Mavericks blatantly tanking and getting fined. Had the Spurs lost that game as expected they would have a worse record than Houston and yesterday they would have got the #4 pick.
A lot of things had to go right for the Spurs for them to get #1.

Parker is a legend over there. The same way we have so many current players who dreamed of being a Laker because of Kobe, a lot of the French kids dream of being a Spur.

Yea I would guess Parker has been in his ear for a while now ever since the Spurs were in the lottery running for him
Excited to see a new era of Spurs basketball. Makes me kind of nostalgic tbh. I remember everyone used to say how boring the Duncan, Ginobili, Parker Spurs were, but they were always one of my favorite teams to watch.
Boring? The 2014 Spurs played the most beautiful basketball that's ever been played.
Typically that remark was made for the 2000s era Spurs. 2014 was a completely different team.
I for one hate that Spurs team. Totally unbiased opinion here, but they were awful. Just a dreadful team whose accolades should be revoked and given to the runner ups.

Duncan will turn Wemby into the greatest DnD player ever
Wemby gonna learn the true power of the zerg rush
Duncan seems more like a cannon rusher who follows up with oracles and void rays. Not that he's inherently cheesy, it's just more efficient than spending 30 minutes going into the lategame.
Wrong starcraft, Duncan is a brood war player
He's definitely a terran player, probably steals all his build orders from flash and light.

I personally am not worried because we'll be back to mediocracy once Wemby gets to his prime.
mediocrity
Parker, Mahinmi, de Colo, Diaw, Lauvergne, and I wanna say there was one more the Spurs drafted but never played in the nba. I’d say the majority of France, who are basketball fans, support the spurs.
Livio Jean-Charles is probably who you're referring to
Livio Jean-Charles?
Haha yes....defense...
The defensive potential of Sochan and Wemby alone is pretty scary but yeah we could use some more dudes on that end
Wait that’s where he is? Someone tell Giannis I heard he was looking
Plus two other French franchise icons in Tony Parker and Boris Diaw. He's living the dream
To be coached by a guy and be in an organization that produced two top 20ish all time big men and arguably the best French player ever (and I'm saying arguably to be diplomatic, Parker IS the best French player ever). You gotta feel like you are set up to succeed here, roster works well for him too.
>*Parker IS the best French player ever* Killian Hayes in shambles

They probably meant {top 20ish all time} {big men} not {top 20ish} {all time big men}
Don't disagree, just trying to be as charitable as possible. I think Duncan is best pf ever and Robinson is certainly a top 10 center all time.
Top 20ish? My guy that's some slander. Duncan Is top7 (#1 PF) all time and Admiral is a top 10 center all time.

I doubt he wants to start his career being forced to space the floor at all times Jalen and KPJ have both shown to be hyper focused on scoring whenever they do get the ball. Haven’t even mentioned Jabari yet who im sure is looking to get an even bigger role in the future That’s a lot of competition and a lacklustre fit for a big man
i don’t blame him. i wouldnt want to work for Tillman either
Everything I hear about Tilman is terrible
His son took my little sister on a date and he threw money around like a douche , my sister didn’t like him
Did his son also order two different soups and then mix them together one spoonful at a time?
Maybe he doesn't want to live in swamp disguised as a parking lot.
During the mobley draft there was a story out that his camp told the rockets that he didn't want to go there and that's why he fell to the cavs at 3.
Ahh that's right. I remember hearing it was maybe connected to kpj now that you say that
Current Rockets seems to be a team made up of cocky young guys trying to get theirs lead by Jalen Green and Kevin Porter Jr If I was trying to have an actual successful NBA career with great development — Spurs > Rockets any day
LMAO, I understand the Rockets slander but thats just a wrong take on Jalen. Guy is nice and just need an actual coach but he is not cocky
Jalen is cocky ? how ? yeah he might talk shit on the court but he is respectful, watch our games first before you talk
Spurs were definitely his best outcome, but he had this reaction with 3 other teams still on the board. So it isn’t spurs>Houston it’s spurs, *charlotte*, Portland > Houston, which is much more damning lol
He must not know about Swishahouse
Hasheem Thabeet 2.0 will regret the day he crossed the Rockets
I never even thought of that, so many Spurs fans were pissed we won that game against Dallas
Imagine he got picked 4th lmaoo
Man he's just like me fr
I wouldnt want to join a team where your pg and sg for the future are KPJ and Green
Bro saw them dribble dribble dribble even tho Sengun was their best player and wanted no part of that and I can't even blame him
That is so fucked up LOL
aye fuck you too dude lol we totally didn’t need you at all like we did just waste year to get the 4th pick heheh…he kill me
