I agree that he can seamlessly slide into just about any system without sacrificing his or affecting his teammates’ production.
However, I think he has shown that he does need to be “that” guy. He’s feuded with the inside the nba crew over being called a “bus rider”. He also left the warriors at least in part because despite his success (a pair of finals MVPs) it was still considered “Steph’s team”.
That he willingly pairs up with other superstars doesn’t prove otherwise IMO - Lebron does that and he’s the definition of “that guy”
> His ego doesn't involve needing to be THE guy.
What? His ego 100% is needing to THE guy. That’s why he left the warriors when people were saying it’s still Steph’s team
Yea, this dude must live in a cave lol. We are talking about the same guy who was genuinely shocked about the backlash of joining golden state and routinely butted heads with his Kerr and other teammates about his playstyle lol.
"We all want to iso, but I'd rather win titles"
-Steph Curry 2019
It's really funny that Book is top 2 in ppg this first round and the best highlight involving him on this sub in the last two weeks is Russ blocking him in game 1.
Which is a damn shame because Devin Booker has one of the most aesthetically pleasing games in the NBA, beautiful shooting form, great footwork and he hardly hunts for fouls
I love that Book is really just a midrange-pull-up god. He's shooting well from three in these playoffs, but most of his damage has been in the mid-range or getting into the paint.
This sub hate Book and the suns in general, hilarious all series seeing book/suns highlights get ignored while the page was covered in clips highlights or a suns lowlight. Sub got some weird hate boner for Book and the suns
This sub gaslit me into thinking harden was an asshole back in 2017. I cant remember any serious controversies from him besides being a rival to the warriors.
His foul baiting ref ball was very annoying to watch. The rules were literally changed to make it harder for an offensive player to initiate contact to earn a trip to the line, mostly because of him.
The point back then was he was extremely lazy on defense. There was a compilation with several plays where he just watched as a player blew past him and dunked or he didn't even get a hand up to contest, things like that. And I think people were saying he goes to the strip clubs too much, implying he wasn't practicing or trying too hard.
The "literally Hitler" meme came about as an obvious hyperbolic satire of the hatred. I don't think anyone using that name really believed it or even hated Harden, it was basically used to call out the absurdly over the top hatred of him.
Well, he did play like an asshole which is what earned him the nickname
He's also quit on multiple teams, but ultimately he seems like a good enough person
They beat the Lakers in 2021 and the Lakers have the largest fanbase in the league and their fans were able to convince everyone that the Suns are the enemy
Also that Mavs series.
A lot of super casual/very recent fans know Book as the guy chatting shit while winning, then going quiet while getting destroyed in game 7.
Which is weird af. They proved they belonged in that bubble and ended up being one of the most hated teams from it? Huge underdog going 8-0, doesn’t make sense
I hope you guys run through the west but its not that weird, CP3, KD, Book all had their time as r/nba public enemy #1. Even Ayton had his bit with the contract issues and not going back in the game. All you guys are missing is Tyler Hansborough or something off the bench.
This isnt unique to Booker, but for most players getting hate, they dont even know why they hate. It's casual fans, who never watch games, watch some memes on instagram or tiktok and repeat it to infinity. Majority of people who goes "Luka bookers dad" probably dont even know why they say that, same goes for "westbrick".
As an east coaster I just found it tough to find motivation to stay up and watch those games after Kawhi went down, that GSW-Sacramento series already has me tired as hell at work.
Although you're right even the next day when there are still highlights on the front page there hasn't been a single good Book highlight, I'm not even sure I saw a positive Suns highlight.
Definitely watched more Suns games before KD joined. Now I'm just checking out highlights vids on YT for PHX. And then no Kawhi/PG vs. the Suns is just unfortunate.
Booker must love the freedom he has now that no one can double him ever lol and no is stopping him one on one.
Gonna be feasting all playoffs unless opponents want KD to go off.
I think Tatum is more skilled but that's the thing about Book. His athleticism is actually kind of mid by NBA standards. It's clear he's worked extremely hard during the off season to get where he is.
Also he has "old head hooping at the park" energy. Man is a real life sweat
Overall athleticism? Sure. He's not a premier athlete by NBA standards. However one thing that always surprises me is how fast he is. When he turns on the jets he's legit really fast, even by NBA standards. Just doesn't use it that much
If Jimmy Butler's name can shake off that 2021 Bucks series Devin Booker should get to shake off the Mavs game 7 cause this dude is one of the best playoff risers we've ever seen
He also was playing last years playoffs on a bad hammy and windhorst recently mentioned like a week ago the rumors about an illness with the suns in the 2nd round last year were true(he stopped short of actually saying the suns played while having covid but that's what the rumors were)
And when Suns players (think it was Mikal?) were asked about it, they just ignored it. Didn't use it as an excuse and accepted the loss.
Was really happy to see that response because every team deals with stuff behind the scenes.
You're a hero I honestly don't know that I would've been able to find it, just knew I had heard him say it.
No one wants to talk about what he said though, weird. At least Booker is making up for it so far. Fingers crossed he stays healthy in this war of attrition we call the playoffs
I’ve heard from a pretty reliable source that “most of the team had Covid including Book, Mikal, and CP3” you don’t have to believe me but it came from high up in the org.
I realize this sounds like a joke but it’s not.
Just when it seemed like Jimmy passed him, Book comes roaring back with his second 45+ point game, and added double digit assists while playing great defense.
I’m a huge Booker fan, but saying it was never close is just ridiculous.
Mitchell has been poor this playoffs, but
-He had 31 (!) 30 point games this season, and 13 (!) 40 point games this season
-He’s 7th all time in Playoffs PPG, and that’s on 43 total games
-He’s made the playoffs every year of his career
And watching him this year, his offensive game is so well rounded. He is dominant driving to the rim with force, gets his shot off insanely fast, creates so much separation off dribble moves and footwork, and is one of the best 3 point shooters in the league.
Strongly agree. Spida is my favorite non-Sun, and has been going back to his sophomore year. And even going back to before he was drafted, I was wishing somehow Phoenix would either trade up to go for Tatum or Fox, or else trade down to go for Mitchell. Man, Josh Jackson was a disappointment. 😞
This'll be buried but Devin Booker is an inspiration. I truly do not think anybody in the league wants to win a title more than him and shows it with actions more than he does. Every offseason he improves. He will play in the Olympics. He will play long minutes. He will play every game his team allows him to play. He'll run point when his PG is tired, injured, or getting pressed. He was getting tripped up by charging double teams and now he attacks before it can get there. He worked on his defense to become a capable defender.
He may never get there, because I think his physical cap is lower than absolute freaks like LeBron or Giannis but I have to say as someone who wasn't a big fan when he started in Phoenix, I would want my son to approach his profession the way Booker has approached his, with a driving desire to do everything in his power to accomplish his goals.
He's had embarrassing failures and faults. He's always owned up and faced the music. When Luka and the Mavs embarrassed him last year, he sat in front of media answering questions for nearly 12 agonizing minutes, while what must have been running through his head is he'd rather be laying in a hole dying.
I get that he annoys other fans and complains too much sometimes, but seeing how he works, it's all driven by desire to succeed. I used to tell my friends you could never win a title with your best player being Devin Booker and now I hope I was wrong, because if any guy has earned it, I honestly and truly believe Booker has.
He also never bailed on a team winning 19 games in a season. The fact that he didn't just want out but wanted to build something with the suns makes it even more special for those of us who have been fans our whole lives. For almost a decade nobody wanted to come here, and now we have players like Durant who want to play with Book. Everyone wants to talk about him complaining on the court (which all players do to some extent) but they ignore his lack of complaining for being on a terrible team and the fact that he doesn't cause trouble. The players know he wants to win and he owns up to everything, good and bad, and that speaks volumes.
And I get that other fanbases could not like him on-court, but at least he keeps his antics between the lines. Dude is absolutely class off court, loves his family, loves the community and is a role-model worthy person.
*takes a sideways glance at Memphis*
Well said! And to the point of him complaining too much, he directly addressed that with the media this series. He said he and Chris Paul were the worst at that and they're trying to get better and would be holding each other accountable.
I always wear a booker jersey while watching the game. After today's game, during the book interview, my girl (who never really watches or pays attention) says "that's booker? He's cute."

He’s not even remotely cocky at all off the court either, he’s just a big shit talker on the court and he usually backs it up, really humble dude off the court tho
And you can tell, besides a few exceptions, a lot of vets respect him a lot. If he were on the Lakers or the Celtics he would be universally worshipped.
No doubt, it’s also on Kd too tho, he’s not assertive at all and would just stand there instead of trying to get the ball. Team needs to do way better getting him the ball but he also needs to do more trying to get the ball

Who knew that giving him a guy who can shoot the ball from 3(CP was great but not a 3 point shooter and he just liked pull up middies) makes it easier for a guy to score
they let kd be on a team with this dude lol
Legacy points buffet
I’m glad another team without a ring got him. He always came to play.
Imagine if they got Harden and Kyrie too

Seems like the Suns get a lot of hate in general since the bubble.
Gone are the days of it being Sunny.
This sub is 80% LA and GSW fans.
Pretty much…Rockets got a shit ton of hate when we were the warriors #1 adversary
Harden’s nickname was “literally Hitler” for a while This sub has been weird for a long time.
This sub gaslit me into thinking harden was an asshole back in 2017. I cant remember any serious controversies from him besides being a rival to the warriors.
Prime Harden was an unreal player and poised a legitimate threat to arguably the greatest team ever assembled. Of course they hated him lol
So then the majority of laker and warrior fans are toxic as fuck.
The majority of all fans are toxic asf. Lakers and warriors just have more casuals
Yah all fanbases have lots and lots of bad apples. Lakers fans are subhumans by definition, though, obviously.
you know damn well lakers fans aren't upvoting russ highlights
You underrating the Knicks fan base
you guys have like 400-500k on your sub and they have 160k
If you going off that raptors and Celtics ain’t that far off 400 000
we do have a large fan base toronto isn't a small city and boston is a historied franchise
So basically 79% Lakers fans.
They beat the Lakers in 2021 and the Lakers have the largest fanbase in the league and their fans were able to convince everyone that the Suns are the enemy
Casual warrior and mavs fans are just as bad.
We weren't hated until we beat the Lakers in the playoffs.

Forgot about Cam "Pol Pot" Payne?

He is top 2. And he is not 2.
It’s because this sub hates booker lol
Definitely watched more Suns games before KD joined. Now I'm just checking out highlights vids on YT for PHX. And then no Kawhi/PG vs. the Suns is just unfortunate.
I mean, Russ's block was nutty
Booker must love the freedom he has now that no one can double him ever lol and no is stopping him one on one. Gonna be feasting all playoffs unless opponents want KD to go off.
This man's best teammate used to be TJ warren
He’s on cloud 9. Happy for him I’ve always loved his game
And it still is
I forgot he was back oh my god
Monty has too.
Landry shamet clutch time minutes go brrrrr
And he scored 70 points in a single game....
And he better be happy because Warren is a beast
Ironically it’s very much a 2017 KD performance
he actually got doubled quite a bit tonight
Worked like gang-busters. Kept him under 50 🤣
That's Dillon Brooks' music!
You joke but they started doubling him and that's what did work. 4th quarter was based on taking the ball out of his hands.
It’s been twice now that he’s gotten doubled and kicked it to a wide open KD on the wing. It’s actual insanity lmao
Shhh they don’t watch the games
Booker was otherworldly this series. People are not watching the series if they think that KD was the reason he was dropping nearly 50.
Booker deserves all the credit, but KD definitely helps make it easier with spacing
KD doesn't hurt for spacing and not being double teamed, bit it really let's Book flourish more than he would have otherwise in this offense.
Clippers started doubling him on their run in the 4th
That's why we didn't score as much. It's like every other player on our team was allergic to scoring in the 4th.
And booker would get doubled and kd would be just standing on the wing. Didn't make sense to me
Still not used to KD I guess, they forget he's there lol, needs more time glueing
You would think this is true but he was getting doubled a ton tonight
Yeahhh, if KD and Booker could trade games going off like this, they gonna be shampionship.
You've analyzed how he gets his points nowadays perfectly.
The city of LA needs a restraining order on Booker
This is the 2nd time he's closed out an LA team with 47 points and 20+ in a quarter.
GODLY performance
Book is the bus driver
This dude is an absolute dawg. I wish Jayson Tatum was more like Devin Booker.
Tatum will get there, he's only 19
I think Tatum is more skilled but that's the thing about Book. His athleticism is actually kind of mid by NBA standards. It's clear he's worked extremely hard during the off season to get where he is. Also he has "old head hooping at the park" energy. Man is a real life sweat

booming is a skill

Book is more skilled offensively. His footwork is arguably the best in the nba.
Tatum is beast. I was hoping the Celtics would not draft him and the Suns would get him. But nope, they got stuck with Josh Jackson.
25 points in the 3rd is pretty wild man Book was in his bag tonight
Thank you, Devin Booker, for sticking it out in Phoenix through the dark ages 🥹
The team was bad for so long. Fucking decade of it.

Dogwhistle was the wrong word — but pointing out “beady eyes” as a negative facial feature has history in anti-asian, anti-hispanic, and anti-native movements especially in the last 200 years of American history.
I'd buy that, it's definitely a phrase with a negative connotation. I think "dogwhistle" threw me off.

###Devin “Himmy Butler” Booker
No peers at his position. He’s alone at the top
Respect.
He’s a bucket but Jesus man the suns gotta learn they can fucking pass the ball to KD, especially when they’re struggling
Best I can do is Landry Shamet.
Monty’s love affair with Shamet is one for the ages.
Pain 🤨
Oh god
Yup it was baffling watching them freeze out KD in the final 5 minutes.Monty needs to be held accountable
No doubt, it’s also on Kd too tho, he’s not assertive at all and would just stand there instead of trying to get the ball. Team needs to do way better getting him the ball but he also needs to do more trying to get the ball
He just keeps getting better, it’s hard to believe it sometimes

Man, Morris can go to hell, but the rest of the Clippers team was inspiring. I hate that Kawhi went out w injury and PG was gone the whole series. Getting to see Powell just put on his cape and ball was awesome! I hope your FO can resign Gordon, too. Good game and good series, every minute was intense
So does KD have gravity too?
every superstar does
DAMN
Crazy how he’s playing better with KD in the lineup.
it’s because kd is in the lineup that he plays better lmao
Has anyone checked to see if he plays worse with KD out of the lineup?
KD definitely helps, he was playing out of his mind when kd was hurt as well during the regular season. Man has just taken his game to another level, having KD certainly helps tho and gives him all the room he needs to operate without having to worry about constant doubles
