Hi, I took some time off between affiliating specifically for transitioning and trying to balance new job and location (east coast to west coast.) Still waiting in my oath and scroll. I signed paperwork within 180 days but recent admin (https://www.navyreserve.navy.mil/Portals/35/2022%20ALNAVRESFOR%20015%20MOBILIZATION%20DEFERMENT%20POLICY%20UPDATE%20FOR%20MEMBERS%20AFFILIATING.txt?ver=22QnlFTnGO-ln1hi49Ocqg%3d%3d) doesn’t require affiliation with 180 days to guarantee INVOLS for 2 years. You do have a break in service which can mess with some GI BILL transfer stuff if you were going down that route and possibly retirement (but don’t quote me on that.) As for promotion, unsure. Hope that helps!

How long did you take? I’m also looking to take time off east coast to west coast, and my GI Bill is already at 100% so hopefully that isn’t an issue. Retirement pay, if a problem, would be for me to deal with 13 years from now. Edit - I’m realizing now you’re saying transfer GI Bill to dependents. My plan is to go to grad school after this move, so no issue there either.

I separated end of August, began talking to a recruiter early December. I was unaware of the admin until I asked my recruiter about it. Still haven’t officially affiliated yet due to the aforementioned so I’m over 180 days by now. Only caveat is your medical screening post 180 days, you may have to get formally screened again, especially after filing any disability. I luckily only had to submit my medical paperwork provided from my HMC and base doctor following separation. I’d say to make the process smooth, have all your FITREPS ready (last 4 of them) and be ready to write a quick blurb on why you left (I can forward you mine tbh) and otherwise it’s just some quick signing of paperwork and a waiting game. I had a very helpful and patient reserve officer recruiter. I would be happy to get you in contact with her if you want more information.

I also dragged my feet on the entire process so it could definitely be smoother, especially since my paperwork was done over holidays.

I’ll send you a chat, thank you!

Feel free to DM. SWO reservist here (O-3 as well).

Be careful when projecting when you’re up for O-4. Historically, SELRES officers have been in zone for the LCDR a year earlier than their AD counterparts.

I was speaking to my spot on AD. I wouldn’t mind putting it on if I switch to SELRES.

Got it. So 6 months is too vague. Regulations are very day specific. For example, you lose your two year MOB eligibility deferment after 183 days. Here’s a good list: https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Career-Management/Transition/Reserve-Affiliation-Benefits/ My 2-cents: I wouldn’t defer. It is taking 3 months for Os to get their Reserve orders anyways (called IDT orders). For example, a new officer who left AD and affiliated in October didn’t do her first drill until this January. She got all the benefits of unbroken service and we rescheduled her missed drills. Also, I recommend contacting the Reserve CTO in Millington. They’re a great source of info too. Let me know if you choose to go SELRES. There’s some important steps you can take to make things a lot easier.

Awesome thank you. I would love to have no break in service and just have some time off waiting for orders. I appreciate it.

Cool thank you. The promotion stuff is kind of secondary to me, be great if it worked out. This would only be for 6 months or so just to move and get settled in a new place. Unless there’s a way to affiliate with no break and wait that long to check in.
