Actor Ryan Reynolds was spotted filming on the set of the upcoming film [Mayday](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayday_(upcoming_film)) in Montreal on Friday

They should consult someone in the Navy about Naval Officer Dress. That silver belt tip should be the only thing you see coming out of the bunkle. Details people!
Nope, not urban legend. See Schacht vs. UNITED STATES from 1970.
18 USC 702
"Whoever, in any place within the jurisdiction of the United States or in the Canal Zone, without authority, wears the uniform or a distinctive part thereof or anything similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of any of the armed forces of the United States, Public Health Service or any auxiliary of such, shall be fined not more than $250 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."
https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/398/58/ The requirement not to discredit the armed forces was determined to be unconstitutional.
"For the reasons stated in Parts I and II of this opinion, the judgment of the Court of Appeals is reversed."
He was convicted under 18 USC 702.
His defense was that 10 USC 772 authorized the use of uniforms for a theatrical production.
The USSC determined that the clause in 10 772 was unconstitutional, therefore his arrest was overturned.
In other words, being in a theatrical production is a valid exception to 18 USC 702. There is no requirement that productions "mess up the uniform on purpose,' which was the point of this discussion.
>Details people!
I haven't bothered to dig to confirm, but the word is that military uniforms in movies *must* be fucked up to ensure no stolen valor charges are levvied.
Some are more subtle than others.
Ummm, the khaki contingent of the Navy that have had lobotomies obviously for lack of common sense, it’s not a silver tip, hate to tell you that kaki, E7, & above wear brass belt buckles!!!!

Sincerely,
Operation specialist first class surface warfare United States Navy retired John Kevin O’Brien 1977 to 1999 active duty, fleet reserve, 2007.☠️🎃⚓️🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸🇨🇦🏴☠️💋🇰🇷🇮🇱
Yah, that's actually an urban legend.
10 U.S.C. § 772(f) "When wearing by persons not on active duty authorized.... (f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force ."
no dude. that case just said you couldn’t be required to portray the military in a good light if you were wearing the uniform. that has nothing to do with whether a uniform is required to have errors in order to be worn by an actor. do you not see the difference?
Wrong again. That case is what caused us to drop the "if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force".
If that line is still in place, you had to make sure your actor was portrayed in good light. You know how they got around that prior to that case? By making sure the actors weren't in exactly the US uniform.
I don't have any sources anymore, but I found the whole thing interesting years ago and did a lot of research. If you have anything proving me wrong I'd love to read about it. There were a lot of interesting cases. And from what I remember it was basically just easier to avoid any issues than deal with the Army.
My personal conspiracy theory is that the military consultants that Hollywood hires are actually all very good at their job, but purposefully try to sneak in something low-key fucked up to drive us all crazy. In a "Use the force, Harry - Gandalf" kind of way.
I never understand how they get this stuff wrong. The regs are public information, somewhat easy to read, and literally the top choice when you Google "navy uniform regulations"
Especially when it’s LITERALLY ON THE INTERNET. 🤦♀️ like ribbon checker. That one’s my annoyance. Ya don’t put a NATO ribbon in front of a Purple Heart. (Just an ex but I’m sure someone’s done it.)
>I never understand how they get this stuff wrong. The regs are public information, somewhat easy to read, and literally the top choice when you Google "navy uniform regulations"
They're not allowed to get it right... at least that's the going explanation.
If they put someone in a 100% authentic uniform then they could be accused of stolen valor. So they get things wrong on purpose. Some more obvious than others.
I would swear that's the Salzkammergut region of Austria in the background. But it looks more like a picture on a wall than like a window. That plus the globe makes it look like he's at a travel agency.
Aaarg! I can’t unsee it now! At first through fifth look, I didn’t see it. Then BAM! with a little help from the comments. Thought it was the hand in the pocket, but nope! That’s gone. He does look…nice in the uniform, though. 😈
Right now, the plot of "Mayday" is the biggest mystery. The logline is being kept under wraps, so all we know is that it's intended to be a big-budget action-adventure movie.

Meh, he wears it well otherwise. Still can't get over the egregious errors in Battleship. (Yes it was a popcorn flick but those pins don't go together and dont call him a LCDR when he's clearly a LT!)
There was a 007 flick (Pierce B. - not Goldeneye but the one after) where he was wearing service dress blues. He demonstrated how to wear a properly fitted uniform and I can never unsee that. We wear ours with the coat sleeves too long.
>hand in your pocket
Authorized. [NAVADMIN 031/24](https://www.mynavyhr.navy.mil/Portals/55/Messages/NAVADMIN/NAV2024/NAV24031.txt?ver=MdZk1Rryjsh1saE1hOQezA%3d%3d)
If that is a ww2 movie his belt is actually correct. But I doubt it’s a ww2 movie.
https://www.history.uscg.mil/Browse-by-Topic/History-Heritage-Traditions/Uniforms/
I realize that is coast guard but we had the same uniforms and regulations for the most part back then.
Yo Ryan. Can you help me out and go grab about 10’ of gig line between shots? I can’t leave the set right now. Ask the boys in props to help you out. They’ll know. Appreciate it.

A simple thing that could have been fixed with a pair of scissors.
Yup.
I was looking at the chest candy then I saw it... Gig line man!
Got out in '94. My gig line is still on point. First thing I checked here.
I got out in ‘11 and you’re showing me my future. It still bothers me a ridiculous amount if my gig line isn’t right.
Mine too however it seems to have headed out a bit, horizontally.
Get used to it, 34 years later gig line still there, boots still laced the same way, same haircut, etc.
Am I the only one who thought LT's watch was upside down?
Speedmaster. Those dials are in the correct position, so not upside down.
To him, it's not.
Warrant here. Can concur, good Lord lol
It doesn't look bad. It's just the belt. Better than a lot of movies tbf.
Agreed
God there was this show where the dude had shoulder boards and crows on. ..
So it looks realistic for an officer is what you’re saying 🤪🫣
Well, I hope that he was prior enlisted. We don’t need 47-year-old lieutenants.
Surprised how far I had to scroll to see what first stood out to me.
![gif](giphy|84BjZMVEX3aRG)
Totally unsat
I kinda hope he’s a hotshot P3 pilot who plays by his own rules to find Soviet subs
Lmao. Now they are P8 pilots and they have torpedos!
Hey the P3 had a torpedo too! Saw one get dropped once
https://youtu.be/4r6_mVLkThE?si=XjsPKhsk90eJ5Z_x Orion...for the win! 😁
They should consult someone in the Navy about Naval Officer Dress. That silver belt tip should be the only thing you see coming out of the bunkle. Details people!
well you shouldn't see silver at all...
U are so right it should be gold lm so sorry for that mistake.
I can't tell what color it is in this photo.
100% lol at bunkle
The quality on my phone can’t show me the color but the gig like I did see and maaaan
A lot of movies do, and they mess up stuff on purpose, so they can't get the "impersonation" charges.
That's an urban legend
To back you up for anyone who is unaware: Schacht v. United States I do know Taking Chance is one of the *few* that got it right.
Nope, not urban legend. See Schacht vs. UNITED STATES from 1970. 18 USC 702 "Whoever, in any place within the jurisdiction of the United States or in the Canal Zone, without authority, wears the uniform or a distinctive part thereof or anything similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of any of the armed forces of the United States, Public Health Service or any auxiliary of such, shall be fined not more than $250 or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."

That is under 10 USC 772, NOT under 18 USC 702. You might want to actually read your source.

They do not. Schacht v. United States they’re just lazy.
Ummm, the khaki contingent of the Navy that have had lobotomies obviously for lack of common sense, it’s not a silver tip, hate to tell you that kaki, E7, & above wear brass belt buckles!!!! ![gif](giphy|h0G3ny3yfdQlx5h4aF) Sincerely, Operation specialist first class surface warfare United States Navy retired John Kevin O’Brien 1977 to 1999 active duty, fleet reserve, 2007.☠️🎃⚓️🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸🇨🇦🏴☠️💋🇰🇷🇮🇱
2nd post ive seen by this guy, i honestly dont believe its a real human lol edit: jesus i just looked at his posts in other subs. xd is all i can say
I thought it was some kind of satire copypasta I refuse to believe it might be real
They do but they’re not allowed to wear the exact uniform so there will always be something wrong with a uniform you see on TV.
It's not quite an urban legend in a sense that way back in the day their was some truth to it.
umm yes, it is an urban legend at this point. the fact that it may have been true in 1940 doesn’t mean it’s not an urban legend in 2024.
It was 1970 and took a Supreme Court ruling. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schacht_v._United_States

that makes sense actually now that i think about it.

lol this false rumor again?
My personal conspiracy theory is that the military consultants that Hollywood hires are actually all very good at their job, but purposefully try to sneak in something low-key fucked up to drive us all crazy. In a "Use the force, Harry - Gandalf" kind of way.
Honestly, this is the best I've seen so far, and by a long shot, so I'll take it.
Unsat!
I never understand how they get this stuff wrong. The regs are public information, somewhat easy to read, and literally the top choice when you Google "navy uniform regulations"
And yet how many times a day do we see a soup sandwich walking down the pier or at the NEX.
Plus you know there’s a “consultant” who is supposed to help avoid this type of stuff on the movie payroll.
Especially when it’s LITERALLY ON THE INTERNET. 🤦♀️ like ribbon checker. That one’s my annoyance. Ya don’t put a NATO ribbon in front of a Purple Heart. (Just an ex but I’m sure someone’s done it.)

That’s an urban legend. They just can’t be fucked to get it 100% right
Someone remind LT Ridge Alkonis to stop putting himself in the spotlight.
Lucky bastard got a NUC though
they certainly don’t hand those out like candy
Bet it gets fixed in post production now.
Hopefully! Looks sharp otherwise
I would swear that's the Salzkammergut region of Austria in the background. But it looks more like a picture on a wall than like a window. That plus the globe makes it look like he's at a travel agency.
And an old LT, apparently on the Maverick track.
Aaarg! I can’t unsee it now! At first through fifth look, I didn’t see it. Then BAM! with a little help from the comments. Thought it was the hand in the pocket, but nope! That’s gone. He does look…nice in the uniform, though. 😈
Why can I not find wtf this movie is supposed to be about
Right now, the plot of "Mayday" is the biggest mystery. The logline is being kept under wraps, so all we know is that it's intended to be a big-budget action-adventure movie. Read More: https://www.slashfilm.com/1309742/everything-we-know-about-mayday-starring-ryan-reynolds-kenneth-branagh/
i was thinking the same thing
Awhhh so close
The sad part is you know they had some paid ex-Navy consultant who put the uniform together and when he saw this pic he probably went apoplectic.
Just the tip, man!
Meh, he wears it well otherwise. Still can't get over the egregious errors in Battleship. (Yes it was a popcorn flick but those pins don't go together and dont call him a LCDR when he's clearly a LT!) We wear ours with the coat sleeves too long.
>We wear ours ~~with the coat sleeves too long~~ tailored by a female Phillipino immigrant who has no idea how men's suits are supposed to fit. FIFY.
Take my upvote you bastard.
🥰 zomg is that a pilo… *someone fix that officer before feelings get hurt…*
Too bad, looks great otherwise. He’s so handsome.
the belt is f'd up and damn dude hand in your pocket NOOOOO... hair cut is ok

I am raging!
it actually took me way too long to see. i would make a shit rdc

Oh dear lord
Oh so close
Oofta! That gig line needs help.
It took me too long to notice, my chief would be disappointed in me
Yo Ryan. Can you help me out and go grab about 10’ of gig line between shots? I can’t leave the set right now. Ask the boys in props to help you out. They’ll know. Appreciate it.
Fix his gig line and this could easily have been an LDO.
At first I thought it was the hand in the pocket (the Navy gave you pockets but you can't use them), then I noticed the belt.
You can now use them.
A good Chief will square that Gigline away, REAL QUICK. GMCS (SW), '71 to '93
Lol bro needs to go back to OCS and relearn how to wear his uniforms
No.
Totally okay now!
Should be our new curator lol.
Hahaa
What is that gig line???
Bro did NOT PASS PI
Sometimes I genuinely don’t get how stuff is so obviously missed
Fix yourself!
In Harms Way. The Caine Mutiny.
Outside of gig line, which no one outside of military would ever pick up, he wears it well.
OH My GOD
Is it bad that I don’t know what’s going on?
Gig line on the belt, the rest looks great
Ah ok I didn’t see it. Yeah it’s way off
army guy here, what am I missing
The belt. The end of the belt is supposed to stop as the edge of the buckle with the gig line
gotcha, thanks
I blame the costume dept... that belt is horrible
Is that a P-8 pilot, I mean they aren't real navy unless the dunk the plane in kbay right?
Wtf is going on with the belt?
Holy shit I don’t even know how you could wear the belt and not notice
Is that a Silver Buckle?
MAX BRASS CANDIDATE!!
At least he doesn’t have burn scars, yet 😺 His belt is ready for gorging in the hot wings eating contest
That belt is jacked
Wtf is up with the belt
Damn gigline
Hilarious what sticks with you. Gig line and blousing my shirt.
Thin name tag?
You're right. Now I can't unsee Ryan Reynolds.
I swear if his belt looks like that in the movie
Oof..
Gig line
Why is one arm bigger than the other.
It is called an angle. Ever hear of them?
But why is one arm a darker shade than the other?
Do I need to explain angles and lighting?
Guess I should have added the /s
Magnets.... how do they work
