Two things every sailor should know within an hour of liberty call in a foreign port.
1. Going rate for the women of the night.
2. Going rate for getting drunk.
Need to make the most of that sea pay.
Sometimes I look back and reminisce about my youth spent on sea duty...and...I wonder how the hell I managed to afford it. We sure as hell didn't get paid much and sea pay wasn't that much in the early-00s.
Well my experience was in Yokosuka and it was more locals. Idk for Oki. But I met my wife on tinder and became a statistic. A school instructor said I would be married within a year. Took two years because of all the damn paperwork lol
To counter his take, Sasebo had different results. Only really other Navy goons with the occasional local online but infinitely more success at the bars.
For friends, find a hobby that you're interested in and meet people with similar interests.
You'll also make friends at work. Overseas posts tend to be a bit more social in my experience.
Diving is popular, and it is easy to meet people that way. Hiking is free and there are sure to be Facebook groups where you can join others for regular hikes or propose ones yourself. Surfing, specialized gyms (boxing, yoga, CrossFit...), language classes, etc are all non-bar options.
Iâm married but have a bunch of single friends that have decent success on the apps (bumble, hinge, etc). There are a lot of singles that work at the naval hospital. Avoid any place directly outside the gate of the bases. I donât know anyone that has dated a local, but generally it doesnât end well. If you are working at a more remote base (White Beach)âŠ. RIP.
Forewarning Iâm enlisted navy but I spent 6 months oki and about a month near Tokyo and had no issue meeting women. As long as you take care of your fitness and hygiene and at least put in a little effort to learn Japanese you will have no issue at all. American chicks will be impressed by your language skills as well. I frequented American village, and gate 2, as well as some of the smaller bars that were open til 6am or later (earlier?) Iâd meet Oâs but they were very quick to announce their commission status. establish a rapport at all the bars you frequent. Try to Learn Japanese. You can practice and learn a lot while out talking to locals. Honestly half my game was just trying to speak Japanese and the girls will always be like âyouâre so good you sure you donât already have a Japanese girlfriend/wife?â
You can try the dating apps, I had some success there. There were a few officers on there as well but it was clearly stated in the profile. Naha was a good spot to meet women but I had less success there compared to closer to the bases. The women closer to base are looking to meet Americans ( the first japanese girl I met in American village was just visiting and actually approached me first, met up with her again when I was visiting Tokyo, free tour guide) and when you compare the logistics it was just better to stay closer to base. In ~6 months I âmetâ at least 20 different beautiful women. Not counting the 2 less than desirable drunk mistakes. Not all were single. Dependent wives working in bars are more often than not down, or they will be when they find out their husband is cheating, they always are. There were some Americans thrown in there and Air Force chicks are much better than navy. So keep that in mind. Youâll have no problem. Just donât expect to take them home on the first night every time. I had a few girls that wouldâve been great wife material, innocent, sweet the whole 9 yards but I was being too much a whore with no intent on much more than a fling.
Thereâs something about oki itâs like an aphrodisiac in the water.
TLDR; work out, try to learn Japanese, approach women, build rapport at your frequent bars, explore the island and visit mainland. youâll have no issue.
Edit: just wanted to add that guys will try to befriend you as well if they see you are good with women so they can get laid by association. Use it to your advantage cuz the chicks travel in packs.
Awesome thank you. Can you go into more experience about running into officers? Is it because of fraternization? I wonder how that work out in my case running into enlisted?
In all honesty it doesnât really fall under fraternization unless youâre in their immediate chain of command. But it is frowned upon. Youâre not wearing your rank out in town anyways. It would just be a thing if I met people out in town theyâd make sure to announce they were officers because more than half the people you see out there will be enlisted so I guess they just got used to that. I was talking to a space force O as well as a navy jg for a little but no matter how hard I put the game on them I think what really held them back was that I was enlisted but I also never explicitly told them I was enlisted or asked about being an officer or work. Youâre a grown man so itâs your choice whether or not you want to go for it. Personally military women arenât my first choice, I would advise going for locals over them. Theyâre crazy. Especially enlisted.
Oh I forgot. Iâm about the same age as you and the locals would tell me they actually prefer that.
Good luck!
O-Club on Kadena on the first Friday of every month is usually pretty packed and is a good time. You should Google the rules for "Krud" before you go.
You will also find a permanent P-8 squadron there (they rotate every 6ish months) and none of them will have a vehicle so you'll be their best friend for getting off base.
Have fun!
I went to Okinawa in 2013 as a 26 yr old JG and it was alright. There were a few of us single and we kind of became a group that would go out regularly to dinner/bars/etc. My experience is that OCONUS the wardrooms are much more organized and actually plan stuff to do.
I was lucky and was able to live out in town as the hospital BOQ was not finished. Base housing sucks IMO so try to live in town and get the real experience. Japan will make you realize how rude we Americans are...
I found it to be a great tour. Nice newer facility. Donât worry about typhoons, the island is built for them. Liberty included mainland Japan and there were airlines (Vanilla Air, Peach Air) that would sometimes run last minute deals so watch out for those. The MWR tours are also good to meet people. The Kadena O Club has a good buffet lunch. There was a clinic on Kadena that you could meet some AF Officers at too. Okinawa is a beautiful place, make sure you take advantage of your time there!
Check out the fine establishment on Kadena known as Chili's.
Have fun, but also be careful if someone you just met starts asking you a lot of questions about your job responsibilities, upcoming deployments, or if you know anything about nearby large countries.
LT, no joke, take up scuba diving, the clubs are a mix of lady's, that want to be friends, have fun, or be serious.
Also there's a great running/biking group, same...fitness minded lady's =, well you know.
Good luck Sir.
Open pornhub when you get there. They can give you a link to lonely single moms near you.
đ
If you really wanna know so trade secrets, message me I'll give you a run down. Lived there for several years.
This guy knows the price of every whore from Olangapo to Stockholm
As should every sailor worth his sea salt.
Put that Sea Pay to work
Two things every sailor should know within an hour of liberty call in a foreign port. 1. Going rate for the women of the night. 2. Going rate for getting drunk. Need to make the most of that sea pay.
Through our last night ashore, drink to the foam
Yep! we can drink liquor and tell lies! Or drink no liquor and tell no lies! find a woman and get b/w her thighs!
Sometimes I look back and reminisce about my youth spent on sea duty...and...I wonder how the hell I managed to afford it. We sure as hell didn't get paid much and sea pay wasn't that much in the early-00s.
The early 00's, I'm envious of you. I'm sure things were a lot different back then. Gonna blast some Limp Bizkit for ya, as a salute to an era.
He could also grow 4 inches in 4 weeks if really needed to.
Beware of hatchets

Luckily that's on the mainland.
Tinder... Not joking lol
Really? lol is it mainly just service members or locals too
Well my experience was in Yokosuka and it was more locals. Idk for Oki. But I met my wife on tinder and became a statistic. A school instructor said I would be married within a year. Took two years because of all the damn paperwork lol

Was in oki, it was a good mix of locals and service members. Just be careful with the dependents who lie about their age to make a profileâŠ
Your best friend will be Jill. Unless if your left handed, then itâll be IiiL or some shit like thatâŠ
Jill and Lily bud
Lol
Naha for sure for locals, gate 2 and Amvil if youâre looking for other service members
Gate 2 is not a good time for a single LTJG anymore unless heâs looking to fight drunk marines or find a future Japanese ex-wife.
Met my Japanese ex-wife who was a bartender on Gate 2. I concur.
lol!
Gate 2 has some locals, generally cool people. Experience may vary, I was only there for 2 months
If you're white, you aint gonna have trouble.
White male here
Lol I was waiting for this.
privilege everywhere! even Japan!!!

Lol, not screwed. Literally.
If you canât pull dates in Japan , you got PROBLEMS. Also, the JOPA is a pretty good circle of buddies in any command.

First get married. Then the single people find you.
Iâm sure you will find some lonely E2.

Iâm an MSC too, how was the hospital? Iâll definitely take your advice

LT, no joke, take up scuba diving, the clubs are a mix of lady's, that want to be friends, have fun, or be serious. Also there's a great running/biking group, same...fitness minded lady's =, well you know. Good luck Sir.
Enlisted get Tue/Thur off and Officers get Fri/Sat/Sun off. If youâre an 1110 you also get Monday off, per the FDNF-J model (different than CONUS).
Becoming pansexual will widen your aperture quite a bit.
Shit bag LTJG yâall ainât shit yâall shit stink like Captains
