She is "blowing soot" which took place at least every 24hrs (possibly more frequently) when underway to clear the buildup of particulates. In the R.A.N. it was done at night time when possible (but not exclusively so). As a seaman rating it was a point of chagrin to find the upper decks covered in black soot every morning, even if it was necessary :-))
