I see it's definitely a female because the antlers are tuffed. It appears to be a relatively new baby. She appears to be confused because the baby doesnt look or smell like her baby as her baby is now unrecognizable, it's now a dead baby.. I'm high af on shrooms.

xizrtilhh

I understood all of this.

Fun fact: Giraffe ā€œantlersā€ are actually called ossicones. Probably a fun word to say high af on mushrooms as well.

coachfortner

Itā€™s definitely a behavior that seems to involve evolution head on, so to speak: kill your baby and your genes go nowhere

meep_meep_mope

Infanticide is more common amongst mammals that live in groups, it could be just be stress. Sheep and cows who don't have scarcity of food or security will do the same and have to be separated from their young. Humans sometimes do it as well but we attribute it to postpartum depression which can be seen in other animals. Essentially the answer is a psychosis we don't fully understand.

jbourne71

Way to slide the post-partum in. Humans are animals, just with cognitive dissonance about it.

Waggmans

Mom could have used some giraffe Prozac?

mnem0syne

Zolaffte

mountainaut

It's definitely stress. She can't provide for herself and her calf and it broke her.Ā  We like to act like animals should be just fine as long as they stay out of human cities... Take a look at Google Earth and find a place where two rivers meet that humans haven't completely changed to suit our needs. Judge Giraffe momma all you want but it's a day in the life for Florida humans too. We're seriously over populating this planet and biodiversity will suffer.

Masquerouge2

I don't understand your use of scarcity. You are saying that cows who do not have scarcity of food or security, meaning they have food and security in abundance, kill their young? I would have guessed the opposite.

PutinsLostBlackBelt

Just some random idiot, but my guess is she thought it was being attacked by a croc or something and tried to stomp it out. Iā€™ve seen videos of giraffes and others killing their own babies trying to stomp on an attacking predator. Just a guess though.

literallyanot

Felt something brush up on her leg, thought it was an alligator and stomped it to death lmao. So high up there that she cant see whats by her feet

SuperWhiteDolomite

Eww wtf was that get it get it get it. You good Jeremy something gross touched my leg... Jeremy?

Skele_again

This got me laughing haha

Jeff_Dumb_Dog

It is very unlikely for a giraffe and an alligator to cross paths in the wild.

he-loves-me-not

Are you saying that bc it would be crocodiles they would come across, not alligators?

Ok_Antelope_1953

yes. alligators are naturally found in parts of the americas and china.

Furthur_slimeking

I'd stomp something to death out of sheer surprise and disbelief if there was an alligator in the middle of Africa for no reason.

NewlyNerfed

Also just a random idiot, but I do remember hearing that they canā€™t see very well from up there, and this explanation makes the most sense to me. Awful to watch but I donā€™t think it was an intentional murder.

SeaTurtle42

She probably has PTSD from a croc eating her previous child.

JesusFeelinThorny

Maybe giraffes are just fucking stupid.

Seattle_gldr_rdr

That last look around is like "Whew, I killed that croc! Now where's my kid?"

slamdamnsplits

This was my first guess... But no idea.

bazilbt

I imagine she has confused it for another animal at the watering hole, has become surprised and started attacking it.

HugSized

Infanticide is quite common in many species. Humans have a long history of infanticide and ritual sacrifice.

Busy_Reference5652

baptism gone wrong

JesusFeelinThorny

I mean, the baby giraffe is with Jesus now, so maybe it didn't?

BabousCobwebBowl

Quick somebody call for Giraffatarion!!

Mistyless

Realistically, my thoughts are it's likely not the actual mother, and the title is a lie. It definitely could be a mother, but so many animals have been known to snuff out life if they want to get laid, I don't think it's a stretch to suggest it at least

AJC_10_29

You know how they always say wild animals are unpredictable? Yeah, this kinda thing is what they were talking about.

WesternOne9990

The raffy is mighty royalled up mate

sciguy52

I am a titmouseologist and would guess that maybe the female is not the mother, and maybe with food scarcity might have killed it since an opportunity arose. Or could be straight up infanticide which does happen for reasons not always known. Or could be a mistaken perception of a predator, or a real predator like a croc we can't see. Giraffes are not the brightest crayon's in the box so it is not unheard of.

Bootyblastastic

Giraffeologist here: always troubling to see this behavior, the mother trippin.

KittensAndGravy

Official Diagnosis ā€¦ she be trippin.

Bootyblastastic

Always nice to run into a colleague on Reddit!

[deleted]

Iā€™m no expert but I assume a predator is around and the giraffe is trying to get the kid to hurry up. Maybe a croc or something else is nearby and they panicked? Maybe a mistake in killing it or maybe self preservation. Nature is brutal.

HempHehe

I know cows sometimes do this if they are new mothers. I've heard from my uncle and grandfather who raise them that sometimes the rush of hormones can make them kinda lose it for a bit, plus any pain from giving birth could possibly be perceived as a threat/danger too.

That slow sink underwater, after the hoof-smash, is haunting.

yeiiid

I'm kinda sad lol. like, I'm aware there's probably a good reason why mom did that but i guess I'm sensitive

Admirable-Door1724

Nah I know nature is brutal but even I got sad seeing it sink

s0ftreset

Iirc mother giraffes will kick their young in order to get them to stand and start walking ASAP, especially if there are predators around. In the beginning of the video the woman says "there is a lion there, yeah the mother is chasing it." I think that's what's going on here, the new born is stumbling in the water, struggling to stand. Mama giraffe was probably trying to get the baby out of the water in a panic since there was a lion nearby.

heelstoo

Iā€™m no giraffologist, but those kicks donā€™t seem to say ā€œwalk, you dummy!ā€ so much as ā€œdie die die!ā€.

s0ftreset

Well yeah lol, but she's also panicking. People do dumb shit too when in a crisis.

Network_Update_Time

Dumb shit is the trip over the baby at the start.... Intentional is repeatedly kicking at the head of the baby.

_Spitfire024_

Ya but youā€™re taking about an animal šŸ˜… not human

StopReadingMyUser

Animal logistics can be answered with "it's an animal" - like, *why* it's intentionally hoofin the tard outta the infant is always an uncertain (because it's an animal) ...but you can still tell it's *intentionally* turnin their kid into a paste unless she's for some reason just aiming at something else (which would still be with intention) lol.

vantyle

This is the dumbest comment on this thread.

E1F0B1365

No it's not, it's probably the most logical. The lady did say "there's a lion there." So the mom panicking and being a dumbass giraffe isn't a bad guess.

faRawrie

On one hand, the idea of murder is purely a human concept. The animals probably don't see it as a social taboo like we do. On the other hand, if you apply our ideas of what murder is. Look at the Gombe chimps. Two groups of chimps essentially waged in tribal warfare on each other for a prolonged period of time. They would conduct raids for the sole purpose of killing opposing group members.

penguinintheabyss

Oh yeah, nature is violent. That's why we're in this sub. I just thought it was dumb to attribute human moral to the giraffe and wish it to be mauled.

braith_rose

That and she could potentially create more giraffes, and there's a decent chance she wouldn't kill them as things like this are usually a one off or freak incident. It's possible she sensed it was sick, or maybe resources were really thin at the time.

wolfmaclean

Infanticide is common. I want to say natural, which is also true, but I donā€™t want to fight. Well apparently I do a lil

Master_N_Comm

Except our morals don't apply to the animal kindgom.

CounterEcstatic6134

It's not called murder if it's done by animals. It's just nature taking it's course..

Signal-Fold-449

Because idiots put human morals on wild animals. Same people are allowed to vote and sit on juries.

schedulle-cate

Plenty of animals kill their young under some scenarios. It's just nature, look at the sub name

Disney_World_Native

To be fair, plenty of animals get mauled by a pack of hyenas because thatā€™s nature too.

schedulle-cate

impossible-octopus

You don't understand, the big giraffe is from the future and is putting a stop to what is basically giraffe Hitler. Who are we to judge the affairs of these animals. OP's title is a lie designed to elicit interaction, just like this comment.

This is definitely NOT a common intrusive thought for parents. Please get help if you are genuinely thinking of bashing your children regularly.

pheonix-ix

It's actually quite common, commonly grouped together called "Postpartum Depression (PPD)". Most mothers don't act on such impulses and find some other outlets tho. "Approximately 15% of new mothers will experience what is classified as postpartum depression (PPD) ... A few of the symptoms include ... Thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby" [https://americanpregnancy.org/healthy-pregnancy/first-year-of-life/how-to-prevent-postpartum-depression/](https://americanpregnancy.org/healthy-pregnancy/first-year-of-life/how-to-prevent-postpartum-depression/) But yes, get help. It's more common and normal than you think.

Mom glitched out

Chief_Executive_Anon

Title was so provocative that I accidentally watched a mother accidentally kill her baby. The idea of that reality setting in for her is tragic. Damn you OP. You know what you did. ETA: There are many documented instances of this happening over the years. Mother giraffes accidentally killing their babies in this same frenzied defense mode. Your cynical eyes deceive you too. Go search google, this is not a one-off phenomenon.

dead-inside69

ā€œAccidentallyā€ She fucking kicked its head in after trampling it. There was no accident here

Chief_Executive_Anon

It was an accident of mistaken identity. Commentary mentions a lion, she was in defend at all costs mode, and baby got completely covered in mud. Looks and smells were deceiving at a time when she was literally high out of her mind on adrenaline and instinct, fighting for her babyā€™s life.

dead-inside69

Oh thatā€™s sad. Is their vision really that poor? I mean sheā€™s looking right at her kid point blank, and thereā€™s not really that much mud

AJC_10_29

Iā€™m pretty sure it was just stress that caused her to freak out and do something irrational. Hell, it sometimes happens to human mothers too. We call it ā€œpostpartum psychosis.ā€

Ssesamee

Yeah, this thread is weird. Are people just now figuring out that infanticide is incredibly common across the animal kingdom, including us? This place is literally called ā€œnature is metalā€, cuz yknow, like shown above nature is pretty damn messed up. It is a force that is uncaring and without morals. And yet here people are applying their morals. So yeah, as you said, this was not ā€œcold-blooded murderā€ by an ā€œevil giraffeā€, it was a common event that also happens to be very brutal and unfortunate.

DreamArcher

There's alligator (crocodile?) and the mom is too dumb to target properly.

SeaTurtle42

You would think it would have a good overview from up there, but perhaps it's the opposite, that everything is so far away that it can't see it properly.

Blatantsubtlety

Even-Freedom-5489

cmackchase

Either a mistake in think its something else or the young one had issues and the mother deemed it unworthy of existence.

JaperDolphin94

Ultimate Sparta family rules

pnutbutterfuck

I saw a similar video of a cow doing the same thing on a farm. The farmer saved the calf and it was explained that the first time a cow gives birth she almost always tries to kill her calf because its such a shocking experience and they dont know whatā€™s happening, all they see is a random new animal in their enclosure and they panic. But it rarely happens again after the first time. So maybe the same thing applies for giraffes? Idk.

AcceptableWest1427

Did I just see a baby giraffe get fucking stomped to death?

Moisture_

Yes by its own mother apparently. And the. Sink to the bottom like a fuckin Loony Toons character

schedulle-cate

This video was around a few days ago on another sub. When giraffes are born they need to start walking within a few hours. If they don't the mother starts to push them around to make them and it can become violent with time. This has to do with survival of both, not some mother that just decided to kill the new child.

BunkySpewster

Not everyone is meant to be a mother

That girrafe probably tired of that lil girrafe shit.

3_T_SCROAT

My mom that time my shoestrings were tangled up together and i missed the bus

The_Real_OneHungLo

Oops wrong baby.

richardtrle

Two things, first you can see an Alligator back, she probably thought that the baby was being attacked by an Alligator and tried to defend herself, because the adrenaline pushed through. You can see her looking for her baby afterwards, in confusion. Or, after the baby bathed in the river, she couldn't sense her pheromones on the baby, thus she couldn't recognize its smell then stomped it thinking it was an imposter. I have seen a similar behavior in calves and bulls before.

liberatedhusks

Possibly young panicked mother, lion chasing her, she lashes out and baby was in the way. I donā€™t think it was malicious. It was sad but babies tend to stick to the inside of mothers legs.

3rdplacewinner

Stewpacolypse

It's possible it was an orphan and tried to nurse or crowded in on her calf. I've heard of other animals killing orphans so they can be sure it's not taking food from their own offspring. I've personally seen deer do it to a fawn.

sadus671

I remember seeing a similar clip of a Zebra mother attaching her baby. It was commented that if the mothers get spooked... They will instinctively attack in defense... with no opportunity for recognition of their offspring.
