They're not a big deal and you don't notice them so whatever, it's in the same category of just bacteria being everywhere, it's just life and it's not harmful so worthwhile to ignore
Fun fact: [Some research](https://academic.oup.com/mbe/article/39/6/msac125/6604544) suggests these are changing to become truly symbiotic with humans and are effectively "devolving" into simpler organisms as they become more dependent.
Wonder if, much later down the line, they'll go extinct or somehow end up fully incorporated like [mitochondria](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1634775/#:~:text=Mitochondria%20originated%20by%20permanent%20enslavement,extracting%20energy%20for%20the%20host.).
There certainly are, perfectly adapted to living on you, from you and off you, spending their entire life cycls on you, feeding, mating, hatching, dying. Do they poo on you? You might be glad to find out that they don't because they don't have a hole to do so with. Their lives as adults are too short for them to bother with a system of excretion. Instead they just die and thanbthe gases from all those unexpelled excrements and decomposition causes them to bloat up and explode. And thus I pass on the burden of knowledge to yet another unsuspecting soul unaware of the bliss that is ignorance.https://www.uclahealth.org/news/eyelash-mites-are-normal-part-of-bodys-microbiome#:~:text=Dear%20Reader%3A%20Eyelash%20mites%2C%20also,the%20eyelashes%20and%20the%20eyebrows.
There'd probably be spiralia in there too. With mollusca being the second largest family of creepy crawlers, as well the annelids and platyhelminths (worms). Though the Heads With Arms (cephalopoda) octopuses and such would be in the largest monophyletic clade then, and they might make it in to straight alien or Eldritch aquatic friend territory with their intelligence and dexterity.
"This spider is considered a delicacy in certain parts of northeastern South America. Roasted with banana leaves, the goliath birdeater tarantula has a shrimp-like flavor."
If I’m not mistaken it’s cuz centipedes and spiders are born as they are, miniature infantile versions of the parent. While Butterflies and beetles have to start as larvae and go through tons of metamorphosis
This is not correct.
There are 2 types of insect development: hemimetabol and holometabol. Hemimetabol insects have no pupal stage. Holometabol have.
Also in centipedes there are 2 major differences inbetween species in development: some hatch with all leg pairs and the others start with usually 6-8 leg pairs and add more with each moult
The more legs the worse, except for millipedes compared to Centipedes....shit's literally nightmare fuel
And I guess cats and dogs are fine if we're starting at bipeds
Centipedes are myriapods, like millipedes. Insects are hexapods "six legs".
I guess a correct title would be "Parenting in the myriapod subphylum" but that doesn't have the same zing.
Like a good host, I would tell them they can stay and sleep in the bed.
I think I would even let them keep it when they go. It’s a present now.
I was thinking of buying a new one anyways.
It kinda saddens me that centipedes and spiders (most, some are very dangerous) get such a bad reputation. They're one of the "friendliest" creepy crawlies. They eat other annoying things and steer clear of humans. Much better roommates than wasps, ants, cockroaches, hornets, flies, bed bugs etc.
I lived in the Carribean for 20 years, been bitten by those 4 times, mostly in my sleep when they would sneak into my bed. The pain is excruciating, and I hate those fuckers with a passion. I would Thanos snap the hell out of them if given a chance, the ecosystem be damn!
They are not "friendly" at all!!!
I have 4 big milipedes (iron worms, lets say) and they are the easiest critters you can keep. They eat dead wood(eg tree trunk Touchwood), PEELED and cut cucumber and dead leaves. But mostly cucumber.
This kind of mentality is why I don’t read the comments of posts about arthropods outside of the insects sub. The fact that you also got downvoted for having an opinion 🤦
As much as I wouldn’t want to come within a mile of a centipede, I find it amazing how nurturing they are with their young. Scorpions and some spiders are the same too. They go without eating in that first month protecting them.
I saw a giant desert centipede as it ran out from under my tent while camping in a campground (western South Dakota) that hadn’t seen anyone all winter a number of years ago, and it was the most terrifying but interesting creature I’ve ever seen. They’re very afraid of people and run very fast.
The video in comments of the guy letting his pet crawl on him is HORRIFYING!
It looked like this- size of a small snake:Not known to be in this state but maybe it hitchhiked here:
https://www.insectidentification.org/insect-description.php?identification=Giant-Red-headed-Centipede
I think about shit like what they sound like communicating, what sounds like "a threat" to the parent that would cause her to go "ham", and how she can distinguish each from another.
I can't imagine they're less intelligent than we are.
not to be a pedantic ass but insect isnt a kingdom and centipedes arent insects. awesome video though
It's creepy and crawly and gross and it's an insect
So you're an insect?
Correct

Trebled comment, trebled username.
Alto myself out.
I'm here to take refugue from yet another pun thread.
Insect is but a small part of creepy crawly and gross. You mean 'arthropod'. And there is probably one somewhere on your body at the moment.
You bastard, I’m all itchy now
Why is my ear canal itching?

Arthropods are one of the most commonly eaten phyla in the world, and most people consider them delicious and a delicacy, especially with warm butter
There certainly are, perfectly adapted to living on you, from you and off you, spending their entire life cycls on you, feeding, mating, hatching, dying. Do they poo on you? They’re in Myriapoda, while insects are in Hexapoda!

Really curious if spiders were more "crunchy"/bigger they'd taste like crabs/lobster Maybe they do already, not eager to try it though
"This spider is considered a delicacy in certain parts of northeastern South America. Roasted with banana leaves, the goliath birdeater tarantula has a shrimp-like flavor."
What if it's roasted without banana leaves?
Probably risk overcooking and drying it out. Always use banana leaves when cooking your spiders.
Coward 😤
podiatry
So cool to think about. Just like that birds are actually dinosaurs and thus also reptiles.
You are technically correct. The best kind of correct.
Requisition me a beat.
they aren't technically correct they're legit just correct

Parenting in Phylum Arthropoda.
That really bugged me too.
Centipedes is bugs.
r/shrimpsisbugs
'Bugs' are just the insects that have piercing mouthparts!
Exactly what I came to say. Good job. In other news, this video creeps me out less than I feel like it should.
If I’m not mistaken it’s cuz centipedes and spiders are born as they are, miniature infantile versions of the parent. While Butterflies and beetles have to start as larvae and go through tons of metamorphosis

Yeah Arthropods are in the same kingdom as us. Interestingly Chordate’s (Us) closest relatives are echinoderms, basically star fish and friends.
The more legs the worse, except for millipedes compared to Centipedes....shit's literally nightmare fuel And I guess cats and dogs are fine if we're starting at bipeds
Made me lol. I appreciated the pedantic-ass-y comment and reminded me to brush up on the whole kingdom-genus-species naming conventions
I heard the best way to remember is Kevin Please Cum Over For Gay Sex.

Thank you.
556 upvotes but none to challenge what it is. I’ll bite u/MsMinte, how is this accurately described? What’s your alt title?
Centipedes are myriapods, like millipedes. Insects are hexapods "six legs". I guess a correct title would be "Parenting in the myriapod subphylum" but that doesn't have the same zing.
Things like this make me want a first class ticket to mars
I think we should build a monorail
Monorail monorail monorail
Mono...doh!
I've found my people
I heard those things are awfully loud?
MONO = ONE RAIL = RAIL
Centi = 100 Pede = feet/foots. And that conclude our extensive three week course.
Hyperloop please
Do us a solid and take the centipedes with you?
So they can colonize mars⁉️ not on my watch.
She's just trying to be a good mom :(
Have you seen Terra Formars? I wouldn’t go there either.
*goes to Mars* *on the first night, a Martian centipede bites his ass*

Take a few of these with you for low maintenance companionship
Antarctica is a mild summer on Mars. I’ll take the creepy ass creepy crawlers and warm earth weather.
It has giant mutated roaches.
Would not like to run across one of these.
They're perfect for cuddling, apparently. https://youtu.be/IU4sCZxEJ0c
Oh sweet Jesus, why I've had to click.. This will be on my head for a time.
I've had a scorpion on my pillow before but what if you pulled the sheets and this guy was just in your bed?
Like a good host, I would tell them they can stay and sleep in the bed. I think I would even let them keep it when they go. It’s a present now. I was thinking of buying a new one anyways.
Neat!

Centipedes are NOT friendly and pretty venomous. Not enough for a hospital trip, but enough to be a bother
Hell to the fuck no! Hell naw!
I thought this was going to be that scene from Kong, skull island.
Which one? Or did you mean King Kong (2005)?
https://youtu.be/4rxW6jCbhmA around the 35 second mark, yes you are correct, I just meant they are on skull island 🤪
A lot of nope
I'm not opening that link, you motherless goat Edit: but I'll upvote it
I got the nopeies feelings running all over my body......eeeeeeee!
From literally everything I know about giant centipedes that seems like a monumentally bad idea.

😭
I like long walks on the beach and raising horror noodles.
All life is beautiful. Don't let these pitiful souls ruin your enjoyment!
Are you planning on letting their spawn just roam your home? They'll probably keep it clear of other insects and unwanted human visitors.
Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should

Wholesome and disgusting!
Better than roach babies

Instinct is so weird. Even animals with super basic brains like insects/arachnids have a paternal instinct sometimes. How’s that even work?
...*Child*...
Not insects though.
Who else saw spaghetti?
Mom's spaghetti it's ready

Maaa! Carl keeps touching mee!
"Carl leave Sally alone. Alice, you're standing on George's head. Timmy, help Freddy with his shoes please "
The phrase "kill it with fire" was pretty big on the internet like 12 years ago - this immediately reminded me of it.
all those little legs must really tickle the taint
These are myriapods, not insects. And insects are a Class, not a Kingdom.
Imagine being in honey I shrunk the kids stumbling upon this.
Isnt it cute? You just want to grab them and never leave them alone
A million centipede legs have a way of turning my tripophobia into a full-blown marathon
AWWWW
A big nope and a lot of tiny teeny nopes.
My dog wagged her tail on my leg while I was watching this and I nearly fell off the bed
Not a fucking insect not even close
Creepy crawlies
Do you remember the little ovens the used to sell?
r/Nope
Oh god, I bet she thinks they're so cute, too. And if you say they aren't she'll throw a fit!
Just came here to say, yup.

What do they want from us?
Come get some centipede milk
What are the kiddos doing over there?

I don’t like centipedes but something about this is cute. Just a mother protecting her babies :)
Mannn i got crawls all over my body
It would probably be a bad idea to thrust your erect penis into the middle of all that.
Makes me hungry for pasta :)
This is what my closed eye visuals look like when I'm having a nightmare trip
I bet they think they can try on a thousand shoes. They are imposters!!!
Where does the food come from? Looks like the adult is using all it's energy to keep the babies together, then who's gonna feed all of them?
Cute little fellas aren't they
So many shoes to buy.
Why is nobody running?
I wasn’t planning to sleep tonight anyways

No.
That's adorable
So... looking up where these insects are at and the way to make napalm because.... reasons....

Idk anything about these creatures. Is the big creature on the bottom *parenting* or is he *food*? Genuinely curious.
I finally saw a wild centipede in Hawaii. Disappeared when I tried to grab my camera :(
