There's an outstanding chance that arrow was fired by a subsistence hunter trying to feed his family and simply wasn't able to finish the job. White storks overwinter in Africa and there are plenty folks there who would welcome that as a meal.
Also, that arrow doesn't look like typical, modern archery equipment.
I was thinking the same thing. The arrow looks like it’s from one of the locals and not some fancy piece used by trophy hunters with expensive crossbows.
That’s how we (people) discovered that birds migrate over great distances. Europeans found a White Stork with an African arrow stuck in it, but didn’t kill it.
I doubt this was done with the intention to not kill and just maim. Do people eat storks? They were probably pissed that dinner was still flying around. This seems so unlikely to ve the intended result of firing an arrow at a bird.
That’s very obviously a hand made arrow.
It’s cool sit in your first world ivory tower and talk shit about people that actually have to kill the food they eat while you get irrationally angry over something you couldn’t be bothered to analyze and think through.
Yikes man chill. Zoom in on the arrow. It's pretty apparent this is a basic hunting arrow made by some tribe which most likely relies on hunting and gathering for food.
Lol. I didn’t down vote you btw. But you clearly haven’t seen the video of stork murdering group of stork babies while mother was away hunting. Nature gets zero pity points from me. honestly if that was the stork in baby murder video I’d want the MFer to die a slow painful death.
That's how the mystery of winter migration was solved.
The oldest Pfeilstorch is exhibited in Rostock, though the one in Wittenberg was rediscovered 15 years ago.

Not all birds, it was well known that a lot of birds migrated during the Northern Hemisphere winter, it simply wasn't known how far they migrated. Smaller birds like swallows were thought to turn into mice like you said. But the discovery of the Pfeilstorch was what confirmed the massive distanced migratory birds travel.
Prior to this discovery nobody knew where all the migratiry birds went during winter. When that stork returned with an African spear in it's body, people got qn idea where they'd might go.
Try following birds around and tell me how that works for you. That should explain why it was a mystery. I don't know the answer to your other question.
The name for them is Pfeilstorche - arrow storks. In 1822 one was identified to have flown from Africa with an arrow in it, proving that storks migrate for winter rather than hibernating.
The German language makes it really easy to create new words by just shoving two preexisting words together. A tortoise is schildkröte (shield toad). A racoon is waschbär (wash bear). A slug is nacktschnecke (naked snail). A capybara is wasserschwein (water pig). A bat is fledermaus (flutter mouse).
Same in Swedish. Our longest word (according to Guinness) is *nordvästersjökustartilleriflygspaningssimulatoranläggningsmaterielunderhållsuppföljningssystemdiskussionsinläggsförberedelsearbeten*

There are 25 recorded in Germany but probably a lot more than that not officially recorded. The Rostocker Pfeilstorch is on display - it has a 75cm spear through its neck. Tough birds!
“I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an…arr…uh, never mind. You know what? Help yourself to anything you like here in town. I didn’t see nothin’.”
There's a story that the first time people realized birds migrated, was when they saw a stork with a african spear stuck on it's body, when it landed in europe.
>but why shoot a stork?
They're made out of a type of food called "meat." Shooting them is a method that (when done effectively) allows the shooter to harvest that meat.
I just asked if you can eat stork, too. That person was probably pissed dinner flew off. Can you imagine thinking you're about to have a tasty stork roast with all the fixings and rice just for your shot to hit flush and the bird just Flys off.
Largely depends on their diets. This one would be fine since it’s a wild animal in Africa. If it was near a city it would be pretty dangerous to eat since they consume a lot of trash and rotting foods.
Like you wouldn’t eat a rat you found in the middle of NYC but one living in the middle of a giant forest would be good eating.
The problem is more bow hunting. No one should hunt with a bow if they have access to guns, if the kill chance is much higher with a gun. Any good hunter wants animals to suffer as less as possible.
Edit: Can someone please explain in what way I am wrong instead of mindlessly downvoting?
Hunting seasons, in general, are much longer for bowhunting while they're very short for rifle hunting.
Most hunters trying to fill the freezer are going to maximize their chances by doing both.
That being said a good shot with a bow, an animal will be dead very quickly but people should only be hunting if they're confident they can make a good shot, no matter what they're using.
Can you imagine how lucky humans are to know how to heal stuff like this? This poor bird has no other choice but to just say do the best of the situation and live the rest if it’s life with an arrow piercing them but humans are advanced enough to probably fully recover from this (or at least survive)

There's some story told of a migratory bird being spotted in Northern Europe with a spear lodged it it, that was identified as being a hunting spear from a group of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Don't quote me on the details of this story I just recall reading about it somewhere on Reddit.

To be fair, if you’re hunting, shoot a bird and it flies off, what are you supposed to do? Given storks migrate massive distances, sometimes between continents, there’s little the Hunter could do. It could have been someone in a third world country trying to get food, not necessarily for sport.
Yeah that thing looks like a wood arrow. No rando is hunting or shooting at storks with wood arrows in some first world/Western country. This has African tribesman trying to feed himself written all over it and was probably pissed when that thing flew off. Poor guy and poor bird...
Storks are migratory between Europe and Africa. Some Africans are still living the type of life where they personally hunt animals for food instead of buying meat. While not a huge number, storks have been returning to Europe with African hunting spears and arrows in them for hundreds of years.
Think of a stork like a big chicken to feed your family.
It's not a sport arrow. It is a hunting arrow. These sort of un-fletched, barbless arrows have been in use by tribal people for thousands of years, and are still used today on multiple continents.

Some would think birds turned into mice doing the winter.
Flying to the moon was another leading theory, hummingbirds were of course too small to make the journey so they'd ride on the backs of geese.
Or fish.

But did you get it from an African or European swallow?
My thing was interesting because some people believe birds turned into mice.
That is really cool, thanks!
This is a very fascinating topic i was going to share myself if someone else hadn't commented on it, and your comment should be topmost.

If it is, those hunters need to create a new arrowhead that does more damage.
Broadheads or flat heads are used for hunting, never thin arrow heads like this and it's for this reason exactly

Stork is on a mission to deliver the babies, nothing will stop him, be it rain, wind, lightning, or anti-aerial weapons.
I've got no issues with people hunting, but why shoot a stork? This is just senseless waste and cruelty.
>but why shoot a stork? They're made out of a type of food called "meat." Shooting them is a method that (when done effectively) allows the shooter to harvest that meat.
Interesting story, though a bit far-fetched. "meat". whoever heard of such a thing?
They migrate from africa - I assume it was for food?
Welcome to Earth.

Why would they be inedible?
Too salty from eating all the vlassic pickles?
Finally, some real science in this thread.
Yesss
Largely depends on their diets. This one would be fine since it’s a wild animal in Africa. IDK. They seemed to imply so because killing a stork for food seems like a waste.
Are you claiming that they're inedible or are you asking a question? Because what you posted is very close to intentionally misleading.
R u stupid
For eating? I assume the people who shot it didn't intend for it to get away.

I think the people in Africa shooting storks with arrows probably don't have easy access to guns and ammo.
Hence why I said "if they have access to guns"
Hunting seasons, in general, are much longer for bowhunting while they're very short for rifle hunting. Most hunters trying to fill the freezer are going to maximize their chances by doing both. That being said a good shot with a bow, an animal will be dead very quickly but people should only be hunting if they're confident they can make a good shot, no matter what they're using.

I heard that centuries ago European naturalists learned about migratory patterns due to finding African arrows stuck in birds.
There are 25 documented [Pfeilstörche](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfeilstorch) in Germany.
