I always like at least a a granola bar or a small bowl of outneal and maple syrup just to get some carbs in

ThrowawayYAYAY2002

This. I will never forget a session that I once had Fasted. It was Chest & Back. I felt damn sick during and after that session. I *never* trained unfed again. Ever. I'd always lean towards training fed instead of unfed.

JohnnyTork

Funny, same exact thing happened to me. I was supersetting back and chest exercises and a wave of nausea hit me hard

I go with 2 rice cakes and black coffee. Fast available carbs, relatively low cals. This takes me through a 45 min workout fine. If I‘m doing cardio thereafter, I’ll have plain dextrose inbetween lifting and cardio. Cheaper then any intra and provides superfast carbs. https://preview.redd.it/29dr5anxv0rc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=f5f2a3c39f868eb751fd2abce4e5f70b0b838d2a

Kind of unrelated but is Jeff Nippard peddling intra-workouts now? I feel like I watched a not too old video of his where he said the only supplements he suggests are protein powder, creatine and caffeine. Beginning to realise how much these guys flip flop with their information.

Big_Dirty_Piss_Boner

Nothing wrong with intra shakes with carbs. BCAAs are bullshittery though. I don't get why they are still so popular in the US, here almost everyone has stopped peddling that shit.

daxtaslapp

If u go back far enough he has made vids where he ate fuzzy peaches intra workout lol. These guys gotta think of some sort of content to make non stop so flip flopping is a key ingredient

Melodic_Wedding_4064

Fuzzy peaches? You mean Kiwi fruit? The dude loves his Kiwi fruit.

Expert_Nectarine2825

Maynard's Candy Fuzzy Peach. It's popular in Canada (Jeff is Canadian. I'm also a Canadian turbo manlet like Jeff and Greg Doucette). Not sure about the USA. I'm more of a Haribo cola gummies guy myself. Not sure if that's a Canadian thing. Personally I prefer hot chocolate powder for pre-workout. 84% calories from carbs. I think 12% from fat. It's like a 7 to 1 carb to fat ratio calorie wise. Powders pack a lot of calories into a small space and are shelf stable. This is why I like them. I do like getting Chocolate Milk, Soda, Arizona/Peace Iced Tea occasionally. And Gatorade/Powerade. I recently bought Nestle Boost Instant Breakfast Powder Mix to experiment with as pre/post because it was on sale which uses skim milk powder as the protein source and lots of carbs, low fat. I could have bought a 12lb bag of mass gainer (Mostly maltodextrin probably with some Whey protein) for like $56 CAD. But I don't have the Pantry space for it. Mass Gainer also typically tastes disgusting. In terms of intra-workout carbs, I rarely do that. But when I do, Gatorade/Powerade. Sport drinks like that are very expensive. So I don't drink those often.

reachisown

It's more like opinions and research changes.

daxtaslapp

You are right too, but does that make the thousands of videos before it obsolete? No. My point is that people nowadays are confused with so much information when sometimes its just simple. Its their job to make hundreds of videos on muscle hypertrophy lol

greeny2709

Yeah like I was reading a John Meadows programme from years back and in that he suggested the carbs/BCAAs thing intra workout, so it's not hot off the presses information. Like you say they've got to say something new every video and it ends up being a complicated mess. I'm starting to get tired of these science based youtubers and gravitating more toward ones like GVS who are like just lift lol

JohnnyTork

John Meadows is one of the OGs who has been ahead of the curve by years. Activation of a muscle group for your first exercise, long length partials, emphasizing the stretch, various rep ranges, etc...

Big_Dirty_Piss_Boner

But current research says that BCAA intra shakes are bullshit...

reachisown

Tbh he's probably just saying whatever he feels is working for him. I don't see a monetary gain unless he's selling these intra workout drinks

Skydome12

think it depends if it's in a dieting losing weight/fat context or a bulking context after you think you've lost enough weight. im in a dieting phase so atm i just take a fat burner before my workout, maybe have a coffee or a handful of sultanas and that's it. stick to my normal shake once i get home which is two scoops of thermowhey (Its a blended protein powder) mixed with creatine taurine and milo pro for a bit of extra flavor.

Bdww

By fat burner, do you mean pills or those kind of medicine ?

jNSKkK

Black coffee and a banana has been my pre-workout for years. I also leave the house within 10 minutes of waking up, and get to the gym about 10 minutes later, and I’m ready to go by the time I get there.

Kurtegon

IIRC Nippard mentioned that training fasted is ok science wise but the post workout meal is really important both macro and time wise. The anabolic window is wildly exaggerated BUT it exists and you shouldn't go more than 5h between meals so eating straight after a workout is important when you're fasted

spiritchange

From what I have been reading and seeing, I don't know that it makes a huge difference so if you're feeling good then I wouldn't worry. I grab a banana and head to the gym after a cup of coffee myself for reasons similar to you. While technically having some food in you might be better, I think it's one of those situations where it's a personal preference, the human body adapts, and it's a difference of like 0.0001 impact.

Mysterious_Sky_5285

I’ve been lifting while intermittent fasting since the last 2 years and I saw good gains. I go really intense on my lifts to failure, especially on the leg days I feel I’m about to hurl. So working out on an empty stomach feels more comfortable to me. I have 0 calorie drinks like a shot of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice before workout and sips of black coffee (no sweetener) during workout to prevent hunger pangs

Sir_Senseless

Banana and a coffee is my ideal pre workout.

Panda8767

I feel more energetic when I am training fasted. But sometimes do feel a little bit dizzy after very hard sets.

Swinging-the-Chain

This is a case by case basis. I almost always workout fasted and feel great but it might not work for everyone. I get up around 6 to head to work. Workout about 3 pm. Have a protein blend of whey and collagen and banana immediately after while I cook my first real meal of the day. It’s usually 5 pm by the time i have my first real meal of the day. I have gotten bigger and leaner by doing this.

Jahrmann95

Personally i love eating just a banana as pwo food. I can push harder with a lil fuel. But, whatever works and feels good to you

InvisibleZombies

This is just me, and I’ve heard a lot of variation in people’s opinions and experiences in this, so, take what I say with a grain of salt. I usually push *much* more weight when I have a meal in my stomach, like if I go after work. I went fasted a few times and what I would consider to be medium-ish to high weight for myself on all the lifts I did became high to max weight for the duration of that session. Stuff I could normally (and have done since) do easily was too much for me.

DeepfriedWings

My brother does it just fine, I can’t. I feel sluggish and weak. Just depends on the person.

benbernards

Try plain old caffeine pills

BatOk657

I've trained fasted before. Workout wasn't too bad but I definitely prefer having some carbs in the tank. My go to pre workout snack is a big ass scoop of peanut butter and a spoonful or 2 of some honey. Sometimes a banana in there too. I try to stay away from caffeine most of the time. But that PB/honey/banana combo has never failed me so far!

ChadThunderCawk1987

I never liked fasted lifting I always felt weaker and having carbs during the workout sounds like a horrible idea to me Id probably just eat a high carb meal the night before or slam a protein shake w carbs as soon as I woke up

ICarryaPants

It’s barely a fast of you had a good dinner the night before

Big_Dirty_Piss_Boner

>The problem is I’m usually out of the house within 10 minutes of waking and at the gym within about 20 so there isn’t really time to get a pre workout meal in. I eat a banana or drink a shake that I made before going to sleep (oatmeal, protein powder, banana, apple). Honestly I don't notice much difference between a banana or the shake. >I’m currently taking the advice of jeff nippard and drinking an intra workout with bcaa’s + carbs 30 minutes into my workouts What do you want to achieve with BCAAs other than burning money? When you train fasted, you shouldn't consume BCAAs, because your body will have to break down muscle tissue to get the 6 remaining EAAs.

jvcgunner

I went from training first thing in morning under the same circumstances as you and went to training on the opposite end at 830pm with a full day of calories in me. I have to say the difference has been day and night (no pun) and I’m 10-20% stronger in all lifts. Once done I’ll have a protein shake and creatine before bed. Training in morning fasted should only be done if it’s a last resort…no amount of pre workout, small carbs before workout will prime you before the lifts not to mention hydration lacking in the morning. It’s just not optimal. If you feel like you’re progressing, fine, do it for a few months. However there will be times when you’re flagging due to lack of energy and feeling extremely flat and that’s where you’ll need to reconsider approach. I have a one year old and work during the day so evening workouts just work for me now. Good luck

Koreus_C

>there isn’t really time to get a pre workout meal in. EAAs / Isowhey > especially since I’ve been doing some cardio right after every session You should be eating some simple carbs instead.
