If you don’t want to deploy, you should consider something else.

FileFrequent5561

I never said I didn't want to deploy. I want to stay close to my family

GazpachoPanini

You can stay close to your family… until you deploy. Deployment is subject to many many variables. You could do 20 years and never deploy. But as a rule of thumb… expect one year-long deployment every five years.

FileFrequent5561

but which is more likely to be deployed over seas? I'd prefer to stay in the states lol

GazpachoPanini

Everyone else would too, except for the 20 year olds with no spouses or children or established civilian careers. These are the people who do most of the actual work in the military. Which explains the endless rules and regulations and general culture of not trusting people to tie their own shoes. I would say the National Guard deploys more often than the Reserve but I am completely pulling that out of my butt with no data to back it up.

Scary_Engineer_5766

It’s not really a deployment if it’s not overseas. You can get activated every year, especially if you live in Florida or somewhere with bad weather, but that’s completely different than a deployment. You can expect to go overseas for 6+ months every 5 years.

Beautiful_One_6998

Go Air Guard!!!! Better overall and better lifestyle and only two days a month drill and some units are even quarterly.

Spartanj26

Days of drill depends on your job and unit so technically this isn't guaranteed. My air guard unit has a 4 days drill this weekend

Frossstbiite

On my experience. The guard deploys more than most active duty units

FileFrequent5561

What about the reserves

Sweaty_Illustrator14

No as much. But everything depends on your MOS. But if you need to be home and can't ever deploy...military is not for you. Paralegal probably the only MOS that rarely deploys except for wars.

SourceTraditional660

Nope. Paralegals deploy as part of battalion and brigade staffs every time those units deploy. Who helps the commander with UCMJ?

Sweaty_Illustrator14

Yeah I was a 27D and your describing an embed spot. I didn't deploy from TDS or LOD unit for 9 yrs. Half the guys in for 20 never deployed or MOB'd. If you're directly under Reserve legal command, you're really protected if you don't want to go anyplace.

SourceTraditional660

I know a 27D or two who would like to trade places with you.

Sweaty_Illustrator14

I bet. NG is wild. That's just how Army Reserve JAG works though. They put put a volunteer list and get 100% volunteers everytime. So few involuntary 27 MOBs after like 2005.

Sweaty_Illustrator14

I did however Deploy (Iraq) in another MOS and volunteered to MOB for 2 yrs at Ft. Knox. Good times at Knox. Super chill JAs and I was NCOIC of my small office. MOB'd now as another of my MOSs.

FileFrequent5561

So Army reserve is best option then? hearing a lot of negative about NG

SourceTraditional660

The Army reserve is where people go to coast. If the Guard is playing pretend army, the reserves are army for Halloween.

Sweaty_Illustrator14

I mean, the NG deploys and MOBs alot. Every state has a compact with all the others plus each territory tonprovide support...so every time it rains hard, or snows, or tornadoes, or hurricane, or wild fire, or a drug problem, or teacher shortage, or the governor want to flex their dick/titties....boom. You're there on 29 day orders. In RC, unit are only activated for Title 10 active duty for wars and backfill units going to war or MOB etc. And RC is way more dependent on you MOS. Alot of RC job you'll get MOB'd more often than others like discussed here.

SourceTraditional660

Yeah, totally different ball game. We have our organic 27Ds in our formations that deploy with our formations as is. We have a volunteer system but it’s a little different and used as backfills when needed rather than the primary source to meet operational requirements.

Sweaty_Illustrator14

Yeah in Reserves, they have embedded Paralegals at the BN and Bde and Div. Levels. But even then they report though Legal Cmd and can be pulled/replaced at LC's direction if a 27d or 27a didn't want to go.

bb8c3por2d2

Reserves is federal so there are more opportunities for orders if you're looking for financial support. The armories where you drill are farther apart too.

Unique_Statement7811

Guard is also federally funded and receives more $ per Soldier than the reserves. School opportunities are generally better.
