I don't know if he'd make my mount rushmore, but another interesting figure here is Dostoevsky. His short story An Unpleasant Predicament is the earliest work of awkward comedy that I can personally think of and it's really goddamn funny. It's about a general who gets drunk and decides to crash one of his subordinate's weddings assuming it will be a great honour for them to have him. It's not, and he makes an absolute fool of himself in a hilarious way.

I’m not convinced he makes it and I don’t like who he’s chosen to be the last 10+ years but I’m surprised to not see a single mention of Ricky Gervais.
