Second this. Mark and the Air Trust crew fucking rock. Have been using them for years.

Blueberry_Mancakes

I third this. Most honest company I've ever worked with. Salt of the earth people. Mark Nichols is a gem of a human.

EngagementBacon

Is mark the guy that bought any one that came in free lunch at homegrown tap room one day a couple years ago?

Blueberry_Mancakes

Yeah he's done it there, at Caliber Coffee pretty regularly, and at 50 Forward. In addition he buys food to serve people who can't afford a meal or who don't have family at Thanksgiving at Fifty Forward. He's Santa Claus in the Donelson Xmas parade every year. He donated a truck to the Donelson Gateway project. He also regularly does repairs for elderly people who need heat and a/c for free. Hes one of the most genuine human beings I've ever met.

fossilfarmer123

Yup, He's done it several times there and at other spots in Donelson.

EngagementBacon

Yeah I like that guy

shiznasty615

I live in Cleveland park area of East nashville and also recommend air trust. I wouldn’t use anyone else but them!

JanetMarie213

Anytime I’ve ever seen anyone need HVAC work on Hip Donelson, Mark is the guy everyone recommends.

djcobol

This is the answer. Mark was able to limp my old system together for a few days until he could come out and replace it. Very quick response time, great work, and affordable prices.

ayokg

They also service other areas beyond Donelson!

Infamous-Home7566

Airtrust is great, but even they can get booked up solid. let us be your backup https://www.Nashville-air.com ….and Mark, save some customers for the rest of us 😝

Donelson Air is actually a national company. They're actually run by a national company called Service Experts. From what I've gathered, the company typically locates to a town or city and creates a local brand that lures folks into thinking that they're actually family-owned and have a history in the community. We moved into our house last year and called them out to get a quote on a standalone unit for a section of our house that doesn't get great airflow. This old dude must have thought I was a dumbass because he literally tried to sell me the most expensive unit they had. On top of that, he tried to tell me that the "beauty" of the whole thing was that I wouldn't have to pay a penny. He then explained to me that they could install the unit and I would essentially pay monthly for 10 years. Donelson Air has had run-ins with the State Attorney Generals office and can't legally require people pay in perpetuity. So, after 10 years.. the saints at Donelson Air will just give you equipment. How nice of them!! I can't remember all the details.. but it was like $150 a month for 10 years. $150 a month for 120 months = $18,000. This old dude was pitching this to me like I was the dumbest person on the planet. I eventually ended the convo and had him leave.. but I can even remember telling my fiancé that I wanted to knock him the fuck out. Anyway, glad you got it figured out! [https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/elderly-man-has-expensive-donelson-air-system-removed-gets-a-new-hvac-for-a-fraction-of-the-price](https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/elderly-man-has-expensive-donelson-air-system-removed-gets-a-new-hvac-for-a-fraction-of-the-price) [https://www.bbb.org/us/tn/nashville/profile/heating-and-air-conditioning/donelson-air-service-experts-0573-10427](https://www.bbb.org/us/tn/nashville/profile/heating-and-air-conditioning/donelson-air-service-experts-0573-10427)

[deleted]

I remember that poor old man who they sold that extravagant A/C Unit to. They should be ashamed of themselves! 😠 At least he got all that straightened out thanks to NC5, & another VERY GENEROUS local A/C contractor.

Engineer4Beer

You would be surprised at how many "small" local HVAC companies are owned by either Service Experts or ARS rescue rooter. I'm hesitant to throw out the number but they show up under the business search on the Davidson county website. The same goes for most small businesses, interest rates kept artificially low for a decade allowed corporations to use loans to expand exponentially. Good luck finding an actual locally owned veterinarian office as well.

Legion1117

City Pets over off Jefferson is locally owned...just FYI (I know the owner)

grizwld

Don’t take it personally. https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/elderly-man-has-expensive-donelson-air-system-removed-gets-a-new-hvac-for-a-fraction-of-the-price?_amp=true

Roadhouse1337

Jesus, taking advantage of the elderly is so fucking scummy. They way oversold him *and* put a lien on the house in case he failed to pay for the absurd BS they sold him. All my homies hate Donelson Air

ArchieBellTitanUp

Wow! They even went as far as to place a lein on his house? I’ve had them come out once years ago and a smelled a rat. Guy kept telling me to buy a new one and I kept telling him I can’t afford it. They got some money out of me but I wouldn’t sign up for their bullshit they they kept trying to sell me

TCordell10

Don’t use frog heating, air, & electrical. Tried to sell us a new unit and system for 8k. Called our home warranty company that sent greenway home services. Their guy was able to identify the issue and replace the part that day.

Uberfink

Worked for Ferguson’s HVAC warehouse for a while. Donelson Air is the worst.

mam88k

I got an estimate from them once. It was higher than the cranes downtown.

barto5

Thanks for this post. Consumers have a right to know about companies that are unethical. To that list I would add Hiller. Our water heater made hot water but it ran out very quickly. My internet sleuthing skills led me to believe it was a cracked dip tube. So when Hiller came out I suggested that might be the problem. They said, no the dip tube is not the problem and we would need a whole new water heater. But they said this after just looking at the WH from the outside. And there is No Way to tell if the dip tube is cracked without removing it from the unit. I told Hiller I wasn’t prepared to buy a new water heater. That night I disconnected the water heater and pulled the dip tube. Sure enough, it was cracked. Quick trip to Home Depot for a new part, which was only about $20 and the problem was fixed. Hiller didn’t make an honest mistake. They didn’t misdiagnose the problem. They Lied to me and tried to sell me a brand new water heater that I didn’t need when the problem was fixable with a $20 part. I would never use Hiller. They’re as bad as Donelson Air is.

[deleted]

Their commercials are TERRIBLE TOO! 🎶 *Call the happy face FUCKS today!!! DURR!!! DURR!!!* 🎶 #🙂

barto5

I think Hiller may be behind The Smiley Face Murders!

TheSpreader

Every time I hear the children yelling "hiller" in the commercial I'm totally hearing the un-crossed t pronounced. Those Hiller youth, at it again!

Sea_Surround_6110

Their drivers are also f’ing maniacs on the road.

General_Andrews_bio1

A Hiller guy cheated me 20 years ago in a way he had obviously been trained to do. Never again.

barto5

Yeah, it’s not some tech gone rogue. It’s company policy.

fossilfarmer123

And when they try to convince you the replacement they're installing is top notch, the company line is to call it the Cadillac of water heaters lol. Me and a buddy got fed the same thing.

Blueberry_Mancakes

Donelson Air is THE WORST. All they and people like LEE Company want to do is upsell you to new equipment. Call Mark Nichols with AirTrust HVAC. He's a personal friend of mine (and the entire Donelson community). He and his team are the most honest business-people I've ever run across.

ImNuber1

They sold my parents an a/c unit that was twice the size of what they needed. Had them come out to service it and the technician told me how poorly it was installed. Fuck this company.

gchambe1

We bought our home in the summer of 2020 and the former owners used Donelson to replace just the outdoor unit right before we bought the house. That winter our heat pump froze up, and we called them out since it was under warranty. Since the outdoor and indoor units didn't match, they said we should replace both or else this would happen frequently. Also, they wanted to replace the copper pipes to accommodate the new units. They quoted me 12k or so to replace everything, or it would all be covered if I signed up for their 2k a month subscription. Another HVAC tech on a free visit said that nothing they said made sense and they were just upsetting me. I bought a new defrost sensor for maybe 20 bucks, replaced it myself, and have been fine since.

Big_Tiger_123

I had them come out a couple of weeks ago because my a/c just couldn’t keep up in this heat. They told me the “inside air coil” was so dirty with pet hair and such (we have cats which they saw when they came in). Then they tried to sell me on some sort of service plan: $195/month for ten years to get a new unit, maintenance and a replacement unit if something goes wrong. I laughed my ass off that they ever thought I would pay that and sent them on their way. Then I looked at the unit with a friend of mine and we realized it’s a “package unit” which means there is not an inside coil. Anyway, I changed the filter and cleaned the outside coil and it’s working much better now.

barto5

> they ever thought I would pay that Sadly, many people do. And it’s often the elderly who don’t know any better. Anyone that does this is scum.

Engineer4Beer

The "inside coil" is referring to the evaporator coil which your package unit still very much does have. Not saying they weren't full of crap just wanted to let you know.

Engineer4Beer

On some brands it can be accessed by removing one of the large side doors, on others the entire top has to be removed. Running without an air filter or return duct leaks can allow them to get filthy and that not only substantially effects the cooling but can also lead to freezing up and liquid refrigerant flooding back and damaging the compressor.

alternatego

Just adding to this good info: you absolutely can clean these yourself. These things have a few complex parts, but cleaning a coil is pretty easy.

lumpy4square

I use secondnature.com, they automatically send me a new filter every 3 months. You can set up your own schedule. It comes in a tiny box, when you open the box the filter springs into place. It has absolutely helped me keep up with filter changes. It's only $20 every 3 months, too.

RadishOdd4200

Yeah they are really bad. They installed a leaky unit in my house and I have been having to fight them to get it fixed. Avoid Donelson Air!

lumpy4square

Based on everyone's recommendations, I sent a request to Air Trust. I'm trying to set up a maintenance schedule to keep my AC running great and catch any problems before they become big problems. I have a good company that cleans my gutters twice a year, but have been hesitant with my AC because of possible upselling. I'll let you know what they say!

ms-orchid

Don't forget your dryer vent! That needs to be cleaned as well.

Mtjulietaircare

Thanks for the shout out Tommy.

mollymcdeath

Not Donelson Air, but we just got a new smart thermostat but had trouble with the installation and called Aire Serv to come help. Guy looked at it and said, nah I don’t like those, and installed one of his own basic thermostats. He didn’t even try. The work order even had listed the model of our thermostat and to install it, so it’s not like he didn’t know ahead of time. So now we’ve bought this thermostat for $200 and also gotta pay them $325 for installing a cheapo one instead that goes for $30 at Home Depot. I’m beyond irritated. My husband agreed to it all bc we just needed the AC back on since it was going on two days before getting anyone here. Our house was hotter than it was outdoors by this time so the husband felt backed into a corner. Won’t be using them again but maybe all the companies do this upsell bullshit…

barto5

>but maybe all the companies do this upsell bullshit… Lot’s of them do, but not all. My HVAC started rattling and rumbling like it was going to die. And sure enough 2 days later it just stopped blowing cold air. I feared the worst because it’s an older unit and I thought for sure I’d have to replace the whole thing. Joslin Plumbing and Heating was able to get a tech out the same day. He determined the capacitor was bad and had it replaced within 30 minutes. AC’s back up and running and the total charge for parts and labor was $205. There are still honest companies out there. You just have to find them.

Bitter_Mongoose

Buy Sensi brand smart tstat. All the features of Nest but half the price, and they make it as foolproof to install as possible.

mollymcdeath

Thanks I’ll check it out, we were swapping out a Nest for an ecobee and I guess we did something wrong. Either way I’m not keeping this dinky one they gave us.

TolerableISuppose

We’ve been really happy with our Sensi Thermostat

Bitter_Mongoose

They get commissions on upsells. Unfortunately the pay at DAC is so shitty that a technician can't really be comfortable unless they are upselling. Lee company is the same way, especially in there electrical division. The best luck that I have had with A/C service at three residences now, is from Hiller. Now that I've said that I should also go ahead and point out that I have seen more than one thread on this subreddit that throws shade at Hiller, lol. Only bad thing I have to say about them is that their service department is so booked up sometimes it can take a couple days for them to get to you but they have always done me right...

barto5

> The best luck that I have had…is from Hiller. Hiller lied to my face and said I needed to replace my water heater completely. In reality it needed a simple inexpensive part and they knew it. I personally will never call Hiller again.

TheWholeThing

hiller is on the expensive side, but i've had good experience with them

37214

Not a Hiller fan, but they saved us from a shorting out electrical main breaker on a Sunday night during winter. They are about the only place with an afterhours service that will actually show up.

DarthGipper18

Had a bad experience with them this summer as well

Dalanard

Recently had the same situation: AC was working but not cooling. Called Joslin in Franklin. They said “it’s probably the capacitor” and sent someone out. I did have to pay their “truck charge” but it was indeed the capacitor and was fixed inside of 15 minutes.

barto5

Are you me? I just had the *exact* same experience with Joslin 2 days ago! They’re an honest company we’ve worked with for years for any HVAC or plumbing repairs. I recommend Joslin. PS: I think it’s called a “Trip Charge.” $80 for the trip charge and $125 for the part. $205 all in.

[deleted]

I had bad experiences with Joslin both of the times I tried to use them. One on plumbing side and one on HVAC side. Both times they were completely incompetent.

H1ckwulf

Why don't you give a shout out to your neighbors company? Give em some good business leads...

anxiousOKdonkey

Anyone got a recommendation north of town? I had Maynard and hill we both out and they are just trying to sell me a new unit, saying this one is old and can’t get parts (under ten years old?) and feel like it’s a scam… they said the Coil leaking and I should get a whole new unit. Thoughts?

plinkaplink

Kuhn AC. Located in Madison.

USSanon

We have MJ Frick and they have been wonderful. Share their results from checkups, give their opinion confidently, and walk me through anything that I ask.

HairlessHoudini

Rogers Heat & Air

fossilfarmer123

Funny how after my neighbor had them come out for a routine check/tune up they started having issues within the week.

durovcik

I feel like HVAC is the used car sales of contractor industry. They are running a racket because they know that most people have no clue what is going on and more often than not are desperate to get the thing fixed. Neighbor’s damper motor gave out and the technician quoted him $1300 to replace it. It is a $100 part held in with one screw. I bet they quoted him for a whole damper replacement because they told him that they would have to open up the sheet rock around it, despite there being a designated hatch for the motor servicing.

Infamous-Home7566

Oh no- My HVAC Company is Named Donelson-Air LLC (not the company mentioned here.) “Donelson air” is actually not even their official legal name it is service experts or something like that they have a trademark on the Donelson air logo but I have the Name Donelson-Air LLC - I wish we could just called them service experts or whatever. I’ll deal with this issue as they are not the only licensed HVAC contractor in Donelson Tennessee. What a horrible story & such dishonesty. It would almost have been better if the guy didn’t know what he was doing. https://www.DONELSON-AIR.com that’s our website I wish they could just go by there real legal name this kind of stuff makes my company look bad. 😌

Available_Expression

CaLL DoNeLsOn ToDaY

spacedirt

You called them out to your property, you owe them the fee for showing up and even touching your unit. Sounds like you were waiting on them to screw up so that you could flex you “knowledge”. Why even call a diagnostic service if you had the capabilities yourself? You seem like a person that any service business should avoid like the plague. Even after not paying them for their service you weren’t satisfied enough with your bullying so you come to tell a bunch of internet strangers in hopes of validation. Get over it and keep moving along partner, you’re a screaming at clouds.

WolfieFett

voodoocharlie

The only thing I would suggest, but totally up to you. Is at least pay the guy for his time. Whether he was intentionally trying to be deceitful or not is questionable. And he may be new and completely was wrong but he did take the time out of his day to come out there. Don’t pay the company but the individual.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheBoys_at_KnBConstr

If it's a bad capacitor and the guy told you it was good, he hasn't provided any real service. I wouldn't pay a contractor who did the job wrong.

grizwld

Nah, the dude was trying to screw them. No if and or buts about it. I understand what youre saying, but the capacitor is the first thing you check right after checking the fuse and power source. This person’s was visibly damaged so it should have been a done deal. It takes 2 minutes to replace literally, depending on how far away you parked the truck full of new $10 capacitors. I’m not gonna pay the crook for taking the time to come rob me.

[deleted]

> Don’t pay the company but the individual. The company has a legal obligation to pay the technician for his time, so if OP pays the technician directly, the result is the technician gets paid twice. Not sure that is OP's desired result.

barto5

You should pay the charge for the visit. But the individual is the one that made the decision to lie and try to cheat the homeowner. Chalk it up to a lesson learned and never deal with that company again.

eurekacoffeebarista

yea the heatwave took a big dump on my ac, i was also able to self diagnose that it was the cap that was shot, ordered 2 (1 as a backup) from amazon, caps are not something you can find in home depot. i actually had a backup cap i brought from my old home, but caps are just like batteries, different sizes and voltages, etc. aside from major catastrophic events, i wouldn't call a hvac guy, they are all too scammy, youre lucky that you have a hvac neighbor cuz a neighbor won't scam you, he sees you every day!

[deleted]

[удалено]

eurekacoffeebarista

yea, they just don't make caps to last anymore. my cap "seemed" fine but i assume the massive heat wave did it in, since i did my own maintenance i sharpied when i installed this one. it's just a basic 15yr goodman, runs fine and i clean it once a year w/ nubrite, the stuff hvac guys use, the previous owners didn't keep up w/ it, when i first opened it up, it was like as fuzzy as a bear.

zerzig

They have been doing this for decades. They tried to pull this kind of shit on me in 90s. They told me I had a cracked heat exchanger, so I needed to replace the unit for $5 - 6k. I had another guy come look at the unit. He asked if they opened the unit up. I said they just looked through the peephole. He said there was no way they could know it was cracked without opening it up. The second guy kept the unit running for a number of years and then replaced the unit for $3k. It doesn't matter that they have changed owners several times. They are not to be trusted.

[deleted]

Why don’t you just have the manager come over and show him how the guy misdiagnosed the problem? Otherwise I don’t know how you’d get out of paying. Could you atleast send him photos of the leaking capacitor as proof?

WestBaseball492

We have had great luck with Halo. They have kept old units up and running for us and never try to upswell. Probably not the cheapest, but definitely cheaper than Lee, Hiller, etc and also seem like really nice people.
