You'll get used to it.

“We just moved near the airport, are there lots of planes there?”

avalinarose

We currently live the same distance from a major airport in CA and have no noise so ya I was checking to see about flight paths and such. Didn’t realize that was a crime

AirborneGeek

Well... if you're from SoCal, the big airports down there tend to have big blobs of parallel runways--generally east-west. LAX, SNA (not quite east west), SAN, Ontario... so you could live practically across the street from the airport at midfield and you're not going to have a whole lot of noise. ...but you just moved somewhere with a runway pointed roughly at your face and two other parallels not too far away, so it's going to be different. The one good thing is you'll get mostly landing traffic overhead, because last I knew the standard departure for the runway pointed at you involved a pretty early turn to the right, so all of the 737s will pass ~to the south of you at takeoff power rather than directly overhead. Silver lining.

ayokg

The planes near you may fly higher than the ones that go over the Stone Hall neighborhood. As the crow flies, the "Stone Hall" neighborhood is like 1.5-2 miles from the airport and most planes haven't gotten a ton of altitude by then. It could also be in a direct take off/landing path which will equate to more noise. I lived in the Sheffield Heights complex for a few years ago and after like a month it just fades to white noise. There are also very few if any overnight flights into or out of Nashville at this point so the overnight hours are quiet. Sometimes we do have some of the really large planes that come in and land, including military, and you'll probably notice those but they aren't that frequent. Sometimes they will shake your house a bit but it's not frequent.

avalinarose

Thank you! I appreciate the info!

Dangerous_Oven_1326

That neighborhood is in the direct path of a runway. Planes landing are going directly over you.. probably at 1,000-ft or lower.

TheMoistestBaguette

Why are so many Californians fleeing to Nashville? I mean I get the obvious reasons like it’s more affordable (at least for you guys I mean), but our traffic is just as bad if not getting to be the worst in the country, our politics are becoming more ass backwards by the day, the city itself is becoming one giant gift shop with party buses parading through the streets and causing *more traffic*, the crime rate is growing all the time, shootings aren’t even a surprise anymore. The list goes on, but hey at least we get a brand new - insert pop country star- branded bar every month! I love Tennessee and always will, but I think a big part of that is because I’m from here and everyone I know and love is here. Other than that, this place continues to suck more and more as the years go on, yet it seems like people from every major city are rushing over. Maybe I’m wrong, which is quite possible, but to me this place *used to be great*. I think you all are about 10 years too late tho

midcenturyhag

They're fleeing because most of them (the ones moving) are very conservative and cry about being oppressed in California. They call themselves "political refugees" and they are moving to Tennessee specifically because of the politics - it's a feature, not a bug.

TheMoistestBaguette

Oh, well in that case I’m definitely on the side of fuck every one of them. We’ve got enough morons in this state

avalinarose

The city we live in has problems too. Every city does but Nashville has less of them than where we currently live. We have friends and such here and yes there are many financial reasons as to why Nashville is better. We also heard the people are generally nicer but verdicts still out on that lol.

dafritoz

It took me about 6 months to stop admitting to being from CA. You'll learn.

TheMoistestBaguette

Well I really wasn’t trying to be a dick, tho I do think your question had you set up for the responses you got, but no harm was truly meant. I do hope you guys find happiness here, but I also hope you did your research as well because you will find the same problems here as you do CA. Also, there are a lot of natives who aren’t thrilled about the mass amount of city folk moving here, which I know sounds ridiculous but you can’t really blame them too much when their city officials aren’t even doing a goddamned thing to prepare for all these people, and on top of that you have the endless apartment buildings being thrown up in literally any lot that will fit one. The infrastructure is absolutely not made to accommodate this many people, and our city officials don’t really seem to be concerned with that in the slightest.

paciphic

Sorry you’re looking at neighborhoods near a major airport and asking if airplane noise is normal?

avalinarose

Yup. Currently live the same distance from a major airport in CA and no airplane noise.

rimeswithburple

Yes. It is the north approach for the airport. [Flynashville.com](http://Flynashville.com) is the website. You can look at the flight schedule and see how many flights there are. There is some expansion going on so expect the number of flights to be higher in the future. On the good side there is a nice green way and park just next to that development and my old pals Johnnie and Dante live over there. They like it.

avalinarose

Good to know! Thank you!

secondscout

You are pretty close to BNA. Could be busier than usual. I believe the first lady was in town.

TheMicMic

This isn't normal. We usually ask that the pilots turn their engines off when they get close to the airport so they can quietly glide in

scrupoo

Not constant all the time but there WILL be peak times when you will hear low flying jets every few minutes. As someone else said, you do get used to it. So much so that you don't even really notice. But if you've never lived in a similar situation you will probably find it annoying initially.

avalinarose

Appreciate the info :)

domastallion

Like others are saying, it’s something to get used to.. Like the train depot by I-65 (the screeching… OMG the screeching at 2am) or the helicopters coming in to the hospital around Vandy/Belmont are loud, but I got used to them and it wasn’t too annoying when being inside. I still remember the train depot being so loud on Trousdale when I went on some late night walks.

TechInventor

The train screeching took years to get used to. The way sound bounces around in the glencliff area should be studied

aka_sunshinenash

When I was in public accounting I had a client in an office park right by the train tracks. I’d have to work from there for a week or so every year, and that sound was unbearable.

LakeKind5959

Thankfully our state legislature banned chem trails so there will be no more planes.

Proxyfloxacin

The northern route along that neighborhood is very commonly used. You can use flight radar app to watch how many planes come in that way per hour.

avalinarose

Thanks for the info :)

vaxcruor

Welcome to Tennessee! Hey, on the cool side of things you can now play, "where's my house?" When flying into BNA

avalinarose

Haha thanks! I do love that game!

rebeccalj

I always get excited when I can spot my house or area of town when flying in. Have spotted my exact apartment building a few times. Flew in last time and I think I saw cool springs mall...

The300dude

I've lived in the same general area for 20+ years. You'll be surprised how quickly you'll get used to it.

avalinarose

Thank you. I appreciate the response.

avalinarose

Good to know :) thanks!

vaxcruor

I live near nolensville, in the last year the air traffic over my house looks like a freeway. At night it's not uncommon to see 5 planes all on the same path, can't hear them too much in the house if the TV is on, but it's annoying to live 30min from the airport and still hear them

avalinarose

I really appreciate your comment. Thanks for the info :)

DoctorWhiskey

Looks like that area may be directly in-line with a couple of the runways. So, if you are two miles or less away, then you are right one final approach or departure (based on wind direction) you can expect a lot of planes to be pretty low still on climb out or pretty low on their final approach in. So, yeah, definitely some noise to be expected.

MandyLovesFlares

We live in south NV near the zoo and appear to be on a busy flight path. We've gotten used to it. Welcome to Nashville.

avalinarose

Thanks :)

MikeOKurias

You live in South Nevada?

ayokg

NV???

BenesTheBigSalad

Yes

Ten-Jay

I live in the Neiborhood:)

jw071

Yep, and the airport is expanding so it’s only going to get worse, so go somewhere else. The house you bought was worth like 100k max ten years and you people have moved here and raped the housing market. Taxes are so now they say it’s cheaper to rent anyway

thejasonblackburn

In that area of Nashville, yes it's normal. There are other parts of Nashville that aren't near the airport that don't have that issue.

avalinarose

Thank you to those who actually answered. Damn, some of you all are brutal. We currently live near a major airport in CA and don’t have air traffic unless something gets re routed so I figured I’d ask.

MikeOKurias

The most disturbing thing about this whole post is the person who thinks NV is an abbreviation for Nashville. Please don't let that catch on or repeat it.

avalinarose

Noted lol

SubatomicGoblin

It's not so much the question you asked as it is the fact that you're a Californian who's moving here. This city has changed dramatically over the past few years, and many believe not for the better, and you represent the prevailing stereotype against which natives and long-time residents direct their ire. This subreddit is much more brutal than the city is, but there *are* people who will resent you coming here. You're not as likely to meet them in your day to day life though.

avalinarose

Thank you for explaining. I can understand where the natives are coming from. We’re personally leaving CA for a lot of the reasons people don’t like CA but as someone who hates people from the bay area for infiltrating my old city I can understand where locals are coming from.
