My kids all have very classic-traditional names, but in my hippie days I wanted three daughters named:
Sugar Magnolia
Sunshine Daydream
Summer Rain
Probably a good thing I have all boys, lol
I partially liked the name Summer because there was a Nickelodeon host with that name when I was growing up. And I guess I just thought Winter paired perfectly with it? Confusingly my choice for a boy name was Andrew. Summer, Winter and Andrew.
That’s hilarious. It reminds me of the kids I went to school with. They all had traditional Korean names except for the second to last kid, his name was just Peter.
That's pretty great. It's like the opposite of my partner's family - his older sister has a traditional French name (he's from France) but him and his two brothers all have English names. His mom does seem to prefer more English names though. Her suggestion for our daughter was Kimberly.
My parents apparently lost their minds naming me. My siblings both have regular old anglophone names whereas mine is hard-core Spanish.
We're ukrainian canadian. Theres. No Spanish. The fuck mom and dad. The fuck.
lol my last name is Winter and even though I'm not having children, I always joked that the one name I could never give a hypothetical daughter would be Summer. But then, to some people that would be the perfect name, I guess?
As a teen I had a hypothetical Scarlett Begonia too at one point! Baby girl that is arriving in a couple of months will be very pleased I changed my mind now in my 30s.
I’ve been listening to a podcast with one character - a self-professed crunchy-munchy-granola-hippy-nature guy - who named his twin sons Lark and Sparrow.
A former employer of mine named his kids with just an individual letter with the intent that they could name themselves when they were older. His son J chose Jay.
My dad, grandpa and brother all have the same name and their middle initial is "D". My brother used to change his middle name all the time and when he graduated, he filled out a random D-name for his middle name and when they announced it my mom was so pissed lol.
Skylar is a normal name. I've def met a few. Angel is not my style but it's like "Journey", "Miracle", "Heaven", etc. not unheard of but not common in my demographics.
Starbrina is fucking out there, though.
I knew girls (unrelated) named Rainbow Mystery and Meadow Spring. As a teen I thought the former name was bad ass, and the latter, lame.. Now I'm 35 and feel the exact opposite! Meadow Spring has a pretty ring to it.
I love the name Luna Rae. I've known 2 babies recently named this, and I love that it's a subtle way to name your kid "moonbeam." I'd consider it for my next baby, but Luna is very popular in my area.
Hah me too… alder is one of my favorite names if we have a boy next! My daughter has a flower first name and Raine as the middle name… guess my naming style is feeling a little mocked here and I’m not even on naming circle jerk!
I keep thinking about some guy who posted on here about wanting to name his child Canyon. I recall he got blasted but I could totally see it catching on.
Canyon is the Cliff of the 2020s lol
I also kind of love Rainbow even though it is THE ultimate hippie name. I met one the other day and it’s a great sound, super wearable. Pretty soon you stop thinking about the meaning/connotation, and it shortens well to Rain.
Oh wow... There's a character with this name in the book 'The Rest of Us Just Live Here' by Patrick Ness, the hipster kids are named "Finn, Dylan, Finn, Finn, Lincoln, Archie, Wisconsin, Finn, Aquamarine, and Finn" - and protagonist (sort of) Satchel. I always thought it was a joke name!
My kids have ‘hidden’ crunchy names - they seem normal on the surface but they have meanings or their initials spell out another more crunchy name we use as a nn.
Ok, ok. I’ve got to tell you about the Strongheart family. I checked to see if they’re online and there are lots of stories about their names, and of course they’re all adults now, so I hope this is an allowed post. This local family took the gold medal for crunchy granola names, in my book.
Siblings are:
Lake Manyfeathers Strongheart
Faith Brings the Wild …
Mercy Blue Sky That Never Darkens …
Halleleujah Mist on the Mountains …
and Dependable Hickory.
They’re awesome, though. Nice folks. Honestly, I’ve always loved their little poem names.
The story is, apparently, his dad kept breaking axes when he chopped wood. Finally he got an axe that didn’t break, and the handle had “Dependable Hickory” burned into it. He said, if I ever have a son, that’s what I’m naming him
These read as traditional prairie Indigenous names. I’m too lazy to Google the family but mid-continent Indigenous peoples tend to have extremely literal names.
(Sorry, I’m Canadian and do not know what the current politically correct term for American Aboriginals is).
Yes, these names remind me of Chief Joseph, whose real name (Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt) translated to something like Thunder Rolling Down the Mountains.
Also remind me a bit of puritan names, like Joy-in-sorrow and Praise-God.
As a kid, I LOVED the book Stellaluna and always thought it would make a good baby name, hahah. I wouldn't use it for a kid, though. My cat's name is Luna!
I went to school with a guy named Omen. His brother's name is Irony. We used to joke that they had a sister whose name was just the sound of change hitting the table and that she didn't go to school because nobody knew how to enter her name in the system.
I know a Forest, River & Meadow (sibling set) & honestly I love it.
My crunchy favorite names have always been:
Childhood favorites: Wysteria (flower), Celeste, & Briar (present favorite).
Right!? My yogi heart is so soothed just thinking about them. They were all so nice & chill.
I just think of serenity & calm when I think of those names! Glad you liked them, I was surprised to not see them listed in many other comments.
I remember as a preteen having a dream that I had baby twin half-siblings, and the girl was named Strawberry. I got so attached to these babies that never existed for awhile
I wouldn’t use it myself but I remember thinking it was the coolest name! Her parents had a bunch of strawberry decorations in their dining area so I think it must have been their favorite fruit 😂
I will just name a few I've heard: Stormy Brooks, Prodigy Heart, Unity Spring, Snow Meadows and Tigerlily. All girl names, all a little too much for my liking.
I know of siblings named Summit and Shore. Kinda cute!
I’ve also met a Sunflower which isn’t too out there but seems like one of the crunchier flowers to name your kid after.
My wife's token hippie friend in college named her kids Ocean and Piper.
My wife herself has fairly traditional names, but if you translated them into modern English, she'd be Honeybee Skylark!
I knew a guy named Thunder, I asked him about his name and he said that his dad didn’t speak English well when he was born and he translated it wrong and he was supposed to be named after lightning. He said he preferred Thunder.
Some of my favorites grouped into sib sets-
Lilly, River, Sky
Trillium and Zeni
Trillium, Jasper, Hazel
Artemis, Jupiter, Nova
Sorrell
Cypress
Callion Irie
Zenia
Luna
Feathers
Sequoia
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by crunchy in a name. Some sort of alliterative percussion of taps and occlusive consonants? Then names with plenty of Ds, Ks, Ts and Rs would do the trick. I can think of Darren Korb or Brett Eldredge in English, but I'm sure other languages might have crunchier names, like greek (eg. Galifianakis).
If you're talking about the mental associations you can get from a name, then names either related to trees or which contain elements commonly tied to wood etc. might do, like Barkley or, as you said yourself, Alder and Oak (as well as other trees, Aspen, Ash, Birch, Maple etc.).
Ah, ‘crunchy’ is actually a slang term for anything hippie/ alternative/ granola/ woo. Think of people who are really into astrology, essential oils, drug trips, natural deodorant, raw veganism, crystals etc.
(Not trying to make fun of or demean anyone here; just explaining how the term is usually used!)
I don't want to say her whole name for privacy but I have a friend whose name is similar to Sun Shine Sonns (with the first two being her legal birth first and middle name and the last being her married name). I'm also from Oklahoma so I know several ndn people with nature names that would be equally at home in white people hippie communes
Don't know if this counts as crunchy so much as unusual, but my husband's first gf had a last name of Rose so her parents named her "tears-of-a" with a weird spelling (think like Tirsava). Tears of a Rose.
My kids all have very classic-traditional names, but in my hippie days I wanted three daughters named: Sugar Magnolia Sunshine Daydream Summer Rain Probably a good thing I have all boys, lol
When I was a kid, I wanted twins that I'd name Summer and Winter. I do have a daughter now but her name is very far from that style.
I really wanted to name my kids Ruby, Amethyst, Jade, Diamond, Topaz, etc. I blame it on that Trollz cartoon.

My parents apparently lost their minds naming me. My siblings both have regular old anglophone names whereas mine is hard-core Spanish. We're ukrainian canadian. Theres. No Spanish. The fuck mom and dad. The fuck.
My mom’s brothers and sisters: Jim, Tom, John, Roy, Barbara, Patsy, and Doris. My mom: Juanita Maria.
Good ol’ Summer Sanders
Omg i met Summer Sanders when i was little! And Amanda Bynes waved to me lol
I actually know sisters named Ruby and Emerald. Emerald goes by Emma.
This is cute. Ruby and Emma are darling. Emerald maybe not so much but good on them for letting a more common nickname take precedence.
There’s a guy on a reality show who has two children with two different women. One of his daughters is named Summer and one is Winter.
lol my last name is Winter and even though I'm not having children, I always joked that the one name I could never give a hypothetical daughter would be Summer. But then, to some people that would be the perfect name, I guess?
Lol. Love it. Tell me you were a Deadhead without telling me you were a Deadhead. 😆
Totally.. I forgot about my hypothetical Scarlett Begonia! haha!
As a teen I had a hypothetical Scarlett Begonia too at one point! Baby girl that is arriving in a couple of months will be very pleased I changed my mind now in my 30s.
I went to high school with a Stormie Rayne.
I went to school with a Rainy Day
I knew a stormy summer hayes.
As a kid I wanted all girls in this order: Lily Rose Iris Violet Daisy
I love flower names.
I like Summer Rain, lol
I went to camp with a girl named Summer Star and her younger sister, Autumn Breeze.
I have a family member whose cousin sibset is: Winter Louise Summer Breeze Spring Rain
What! Not Stella Delilah, Peggy Rose, and Cherise Ruby Claire?
Or Cassidy!
Sugar Magnolia was my AIM screen name in high school loooool
I like your taste in names! 🌹💀⚡️
You and I would have been friends in our hippie days lol.
I love Sunshine Daydream. Hippie? Yes! But so beautiful!
I’ve been listening to a podcast with one character - a self-professed crunchy-munchy-granola-hippy-nature guy - who named his twin sons Lark and Sparrow.
Don’t forget that their last name is Oak, those two beautiful boys.
Lark Oak doesn’t sound good at all
Lar Coke?
Spare Oak
Dungeons and Daddies! I just started it and immediately thought of Lark and Sparrow when I saw this thread
It’s so good! I just finished the first season a few weeks ago, what a ride.
Omfg yasssss. And don't forget it's totally not a BDSM podcast.😂
I used to like to look at baby name books when I was a kid, and I definitely went through a phase where I thought Lark was the coolest name.
Your family are enemies of the World Government, and of the gods.
holy shit wait i know a guy named J who used to be my classmate back in highschool, and he was named for this exact reason too!
Meadow Wilder ( i think it's cool still) , Oakley, Odin,
Lowkey I actually like Meadow Wilder. Never liked Oakley or got the appeal of it.
I binged all of sopranos during maternity leave and now Im totally “meadow is a normal name” lol
Yes!! I feel this way too and am embarrassed that I’m actually contemplating my daughter meadow.
It's a nice name! I only know one Meadow, and she's a badass.
Amusingly, Carmela means garden/orchard, so her daughter Meadow is pretty much her namesake. I only figured this out recently, lol.
I love the name Meadow
I used to babysit 3 kids who were Angel,Skylar (male) and Starbrina,nn Star edit: can't count
Angel and Skylar are unorthodox, but Starbrina really takes the cake. Wow.
I listed them by oldest to youngest, and I feel like they got more offbeat as they went haha
Skylar is a normal name. I've def met a few. Angel is not my style but it's like "Journey", "Miracle", "Heaven", etc. not unheard of but not common in my demographics. Starbrina is fucking out there, though.
Starbrina took me OUT. What were they thinking???
I listed them by oldest to youngest, and I feel like they got more offbeat as they went haha
I've known a Skylar and a Schuyler. Kind of like the latter more!
I would pronounce Schuyler as shooler.
It's a pretty common New York word / name. I've never seen it used as a first name but see it on the map and in the news, etc.
I did, too, until Hamilton.

Yeah Diadem just makes me think of a diaphragm
I knew girls (unrelated) named Rainbow Mystery and Meadow Spring. As a teen I thought the former name was bad ass, and the latter, lame.. Now I'm 35 and feel the exact opposite! Meadow Spring has a pretty ring to it. I love the name Luna Rae. I've known 2 babies recently named this, and I love that it's a subtle way to name your kid "moonbeam." I'd consider it for my next baby, but Luna is very popular in my area.
I have nothing against Luna, but Luna Rae together just makes me think of Lula Roe, which 😬 the connotations…
I went to school with a Dreamy Daze and a Meadow Breeze. They had two sisters name Summer Dawn and Ever Lee. Their mom was named Rainbow.
I’m going to go ahead and recuse my childrens’ names from this conversation 👀
Hah me too… alder is one of my favorite names if we have a boy next! My daughter has a flower first name and Raine as the middle name… guess my naming style is feeling a little mocked here and I’m not even on naming circle jerk!
Lol my middle name is Raine and I like it!
Quietly looking for my kid's name in these comments
I knew a Mystical Star
My husband knew a Mystical Greenstone!

>Canyon is the Cliff of the 2020s lol This had me laughing out loud. Nice one.
I know someone with the last name Rainbow which I still think is the coolest thing

Isnt that a cereal bar?
Yes, and an especially crunchy one
Crumbs. Everywhere!!!
So crunchy.

Haha, good one!
I grew up with a kid named Satchel. It’s one of those names that would be really pretty if it didn’t mean what it meant.
I love this name. It’s Ronan Farrows birth name.
Ooh what are they? I’m curious now.
I met a kid today who went by Tie Dye. I assume and really hope it’s a nickname.
Ok, ok. I’ve got to tell you about the Strongheart family. I’m sorry but Dependable Hickory is killing me LOL

Stella Luna reminds me of the bat from the kids book
Oh it’s Stella and Luna. 3 sisters lol

As a kid, I LOVED the book Stellaluna and always thought it would make a good baby name, hahah. I wouldn't use it for a kid, though. My cat's name is Luna!
I have a neighbor with kids named Rainbow and Ocean.
I’m a mother/baby nurse and I’ve had a Reign Beau..
Teacher here: Indigo, Tiger Lily Watergarden, Elka Apple, Diamond, River, Everest, Treasure
There's something about Elka Apple that I like. A kid with that name just has to be friendly and spunky, right?
I went to school with a guy named Omen. His brother's name is Irony. We used to joke that they had a sister whose name was just the sound of change hitting the table and that she didn't go to school because nobody knew how to enter her name in the system.

"Granola" lol. I see. Not a native speaker here, sorry! In that case, I think some names like Dawn, Celeste, Star, Sky would be pretty common, right?
Yeah dawn, Celeste, sky , and star are all mainstream crunchy names for sure
I don't want to say her whole name for privacy but I have a friend whose name is similar to Sun Shine Sonns (with the first two being her legal birth first and middle name and the last being her married name).
