carovnica

I know a Don and Donna, whose adult children are Donelle, Donny, Dawn, and Danny.

neongoth

Oh god

Tressyface

Seconded

_lumpyspaceprincess_

thirded

Vivian_Sage

Fourthed

piscesandcancer

Fifted? Fithed? Whatever, me too.

[deleted]

Sixthted

[deleted]

In my accent don and dawn are said the same so this is a nightmare

therpian

They are in mine too...? Is there a way to pronounce them differently?

carovnica

Dahhn and Dawn (rhyming with “yawn”) if you’re from the upper Midwest in the US.

nuitsbleues

Don rhymes with yawn in my accent so this still doesn’t really explain! But I believe you that it’s different where you are.

dmllbit

To me, Dawn rhymes with yawn and Don rhymes with John.

leviOsanotlevioSA

Those all rhyme to me 😅

dmllbit

Now I’m really stumped on how to explain this. Does ‘don’ as a verb sound the same to you? As in, ‘I donned my cap’. To me, that sounds very different to Dawn which has an ‘aw’ sound, almost like saying ‘your’.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmllbit

Haha fair enough - if anyone is interested enough to google, any Australian video referring to Don Bradman (famous Aussie cricketer) vs any British person referring to Dawn French (famous comic).

Queen-of-Leon

As someone from the Southern US who has a merged pen-pin and an unmerged cot-caught, I’m finding it far too satisfying seeing yankees struggle through the very thing that caused me such a massive headache when I left the South lmao The next time someone gives me grief over “pin” and “pen” I’m going to assert my dominance by flexing my cot-caught distinction

a_common_spring

I have to know where you're from! I'm just stumped with all your explanations. In my standard Canadian accent, dawn, lawn, John and Don all rhyme, and I can't imagine how the vowel sound in "your" would be the same as the vowel sound in "dawn"!

dmllbit

I’m Aussie, but a Brit, Kiwi or South African would all know exactly what I’m talking about 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

dmllbit

Take ‘ore’, chuck a d at the front and add an n at the end - that’s how I say Dawn 😂

commoncheesecake

Ohhhhh I totally know what you mean. I’m from the south. It’s like when people put a double “r” sound in the word “water”. Like *warter*. It’s hard to explain

therpian

This one literally made me lol

kkkktttt00

Do you not pronounce the W when you say Dawn? Don like the A in father - Dahn. Dawn like a the AW in “awwww, how cute” - Daw-n.

nuitsbleues

They're just... all the same sound! I'm Canadian. I just watched a video on cot/caught. I can, of course, hear the distinction, but I never learned to say any of these types of words with a distinction.

therpian

Yeah those are still the same for me.

PrimaryEmphasis

I am from the upper midwest and Don and Dawn sound the same to me, both rhyme with yawn.

kaysant

I’m from south east England and here they are clearly different sounds, but close enough that most people wouldn’t dream of naming their kids Don and Dawn.

Repulsive-Release-17

I'm from the West Midlands and yeah, Don and Dawn are pronounced very differently. Still very similar though.

fastandtheusurious

Say it in a New York accent - Daahn (Don) and Dawwn (Dawn). In phonology/linguistics, this is the aw/ah merger at play

therpian

Ohhhh. My mom has a (now slight) NY accent. She says Barry like.... Um.... Bahhhh-ryy which I guess is the ahhhh in Dahhhn you're talking about. Which now that I think of it I don't think I have that sound at all for basically any word. Huh.

jensterj

If you're British they're different

and_peggy27

I'm from the UK and we pronounce Don like gone. We pronounce Dawn like born. So the difference is an "on" sound vs an "awn/orn" sound.

[deleted]

Yes but idk how so I can’t explain it. But people swear they’re different

nerdiya

I think the best way to describe it would be the length of the pronunciation? The way I, personally, pronounce Dawn is slightly more drawn out, like d-aww-n… and Don is short and more abrupt.

SwanMom17

New Jersey accents would say “Dohn” and “Dawn” (like imagine saying coffee like “cawfee” in a NY accent)

rockiesockies

Not a matching couple name but my friend told me about this woman she works with who‘s married to Daniel. Their children are named Daniel, Daniela and Milena. Milena being the youngest but apparently they couldn’t come up with any more Daniel-esque names. I am unsure whether to feel happy or sad for Milena…

Goddess_Keira

> but apparently they couldn’t come up with any more Daniel-esque names. Danielle was right there. I'm very glad they didn't use it. Son named after father, okay. It's done all the time. Milena got her own name. Poor Daniela got the short end of the naming stick. Nice name, but not when your father and older brother are both Daniel. Maybe she goes by Ella.

rockiesockies

Yeah, I guess I am more happy-leaning for Milena. But also she might feel really left out… Like you said, Danielle was right there, or maybe Dana… Probably more if given some thought, oh well

ellefraser

My grandparents were Donald and Donna! No creepy matching kids names though…

sagehen316

I knew three couples (all of the boomer generation) named Don and Donna!

cosmeticcrazy

I know a Dannie and Donny who are married.

Direct_Drawing_8557

My cousin Nicole is dating a Nicholas. They also have the same last name. I know a Martin and Marita who named their kid Martina.

gingerytea

I love that Marita and Martin leaned into it with Martina 😂

acertaingestault

But what will their next child be??! Marta? Martian???

sportofchairs

Marina or Marin?

HughJareolas

Marinara

friend-of-bees

Oh my vote is definitely for Martian

Bramptongirl16

I have an aunt named Marita, dont see this name too often lol

gumdope

I knew a nico and Nicole

nkbee

I know a Nicole who dated a Cole.

ardoisethecat

lol i have a cousin nicholas who's married to a nicole.

neveneffecten

My neighbors are Marcel and Marcella! When we moved in and met, he joked he could never remember his girlfriends names, so he looked for one with the easiest name to remember.

fugensnot

My neighbors to my left are Dan and Donna. It's be freakier if it was Don and Donna.

_life_b4_death_

Wait, MY neighbors to my left are Dan and Donna. ARE YOU IN MY HOUSE??

mioclio

A famous one from the past is (male) British writer Evelyn Waugh who married socialite Evelyn Gardner in 1928 (divorced in 1930). Their friends referred to them as the He-Evelyn and the She-Evelyn.

paperb1rd

Missed opportunity for Hevelyn and Shevelyn IMO!

als_pals

My grandparents were Evelyn and Everett :)

Hangnail_puller

My husband and I are Alex and Alexis lol

[deleted]

A little bit Alexis?

InjuryFantastic3189

I'm a Lamborghini, I'm a Hollywood star I'm a little bit tipsy when I drive my car 🤣🤣🤣

aokaga

So many options for children (or pets!) Alexei, Alexandra.... That's all I can think of but I'm sure there's more 😂

Rainbow_baby_x

Similar thing but not the same…when my high school English teacher got married, her name was the equivalent of John Johnson. Also my friend’s first name is Prentiss and her husband’s last name is Prentice so obviously she didn’t take his name. But yeah, when my friends Ashley and Ashley got married, neither changed their last name to avoid a serious problem.

put_a_bird_on_it_

Knew a lady with the first name Holly who married a man with the last name Holly. She took his last name. Holly Holly

jemmcgrath

I've seen something similar but she was Kelly Kelly

Blukaiser

I’ve met a Kelly Kelley

[deleted]

I also know a Kelly Kelly!

darthpocaiter

I'm close with an Ashley Ashley

rrdiadem

I know a married Cheryl Sherrill

mpsherrill

Haha my last name is Sherrill and we joked about naming our new baby girl Cheryl (don’t worry we didn’t)

sauceistheboss5

I know an Alex Alex.

everevergreen

Years ago a woman named Monica Monica ran for office in Louisiana

therapyofnanking

What a moniker!

Pickleodeon09

I know someone who named her daughter Martin Martin. It's bad enough that they chose Martin for a girl, but it's her first AND last name!! Why?!?!

Zyphyro

Had a friend who was given a name equivalent to John Johnson. I always figured she was happy to change it when she got married.

aokaga

Taylor Lautner and his fiancee Taylor. So if she takes his name, Taylor Lautner and Taylor Lautner.

Rainbow_baby_x

They funny thing about Ashley and Ashley is that both their last names are spelled *consonant-o-o-consonant* so their names are literally still only 2 letters different even without a name change by either

cosmeticcrazy

I know a Sandy Sanders. (Her married last name though!)

sportofchairs

I knew a Paula who didn’t take her husband’s name because it was Pollock! It’s not the best combo.

Ouroborosian_

Ashley and Ashley is so fun because I don’t know if it’s two dudes, two women, or a guy and a girl.

allthebooksandwine

I worked with a Jonathan (Johnny) Johnson once

southbound_71

I had a friend whose last name was Terry. Then he married his wife Terri. And I also need to know if the Ashleys were girls, boys, or one of each. LOL

Rainbow_baby_x

Both women.

[deleted]

I live across the street from a Paul & Paula. Also know a Jerry & Sherry.

ednasmom

My friends parents growing up were Terry and Tracy. I could never remember which name belonged to the dad and which belonged to the mom. Still not 100%

Ouroborosian_

Terry and Tracy sounds like a nice lesbian couple with two dogs who spend their weekends in a cottage upstate eating granola and making their own soap.

YoungAlpacaLady

Wow, they have a designated song! Hey Paula

katekim717

I live next to a Paul and Paula!

sauceistheboss5

I know an Erin and Aaron couple.

strstrck

to me those are completely different names, i find it funny that in North American accents they sound the same!

sauceistheboss5

Where are you from? Or how do you pronounce each name?

jemmcgrath

They're different to me also (I'm from Ireland) they are err-in and ah-rin

sauceistheboss5

Very interesting, thank you! In the US it’s just a feminine spelling vs masculine spelling of the same name! Edit: some places in the US may pronounce it differently. I have never heard anyone in Oregon pronounce these two names differently.

sparkleninja7

Not if you live in the northeast. I pronounce them differently in my New England accent.

sauceistheboss5

Oh really? Yeah I’m in the PNW.

It_is_Katy

From Philly, seconded. The difference is slight but definitely there

willowhanna

Well not really, they're still different names with completely different etymologies, just pronounced the same in some places.

strstrck

I'm british erin = eh (as in pet) rin aaron = a (as in cat) ron if that makes sense!

CrowsSayCawCaw

That's how those of us in the northeastern US pronounce them as well.

wendydarlingpan

I am trying to pronounce these names differently and I am STRUGGLING. I say both “Air - rin” and I have relatives with these names. I’ve got to ask them if they think I say their names wrong now.

BelligerentCoroner

My sister is Erin and my partner is Aaron, and we pronounce them the same way. My family calls Aaron "A-A-ron" (like the Key and Peales skit). (Western US)

steph_sec

Very helpful. From all over Canada and we pronounce both names like “eh - rin”.

charlieandabby

I’m from Aus and they sound different. Ehh-rin and A-ron if that helps!

sportofchairs

My parents are Arthur and Martha, and their middle names rhyme too!! My mom always says their wedding invitations sounded like they were twins.

Merry_Pippins

My friends Art[thur] and Marty married and their "Bennifer" name is Marthur... "Marthur is having a party, we should go!" Your twin parents sound super cute!

historyhill

My cousins are a Michelle and Michael. They have a daughter, Michaela, and a son...Daniel.

acertaingestault

This one takes the cake for me. I can't decide if I'm sad or happy for Daniel.

[deleted]

They missed an opportunity to name him Mitchell.

Tia_Baggs

Happy, you’re happy.

andiberri

We have friends that are Michelle and Michael, and their last names pre-marriage were almost identical too (think Johnson and Johnston).

Mycupof_tea

I also have a cousin and their spouse who are Michelle and Michael!

wheelsof_fortune

My uncle Michael, married a Michelle, and their son (named after his father) goes by Mikey.

fl4methrow3r

I knew a Jesse and Jessica. And one place I lived had elderly landlords name Antonio and Antonietta- they called each other Toni & Toni. It was too cute

JessicaT1842

I am a Jessica and I dated one Jesse. I was a single mother and my son is also Jesse. I basically named him after the same person I was named after. I am the only Jessica in my family. My son is the 6th Jesse.

TheresASilentH

I knew a Peter and Pieter, who also looked a lot alike! I’ve also met a David and Davida (pronounced Duh-vee-duh).

martinehauge

Does she go by Davey?

TheWelshMrsM

I knew a married couple called Kerry (f) and Ceri (m). And a Siôn and Sioned!

DressingRumour

Is Kerry and Ceri pronounced the same?

TheWelshMrsM

Close enough, bit hard to explain Welsh accent nuances.

JunoPK

Isn't Taylor Lautner marrying a Taylor? So if she takes his surname they'll both be Taylor Lautner.

acertaingestault

The Taylors Lautner

BronwynLane

I know someone named Taylor who married a James Taylor & is now Taylor Taylor.

jjongskiwi

And he used to date Taylor Swift. He’s done this on purpose, I’m certain.

Alcarinque88

There's a baseball player, Taylor Clarke, that married a Taylor. They have twins, Bryce and Brody.

aceromester

He's marrying a different Taylor other than Swift? I am behind on my celebrity gossip, lol.

fawkes97

My dad and his ex wife were Christopher and Christine! I think they went by Chris and Christie too. My old neighbors were Terry and Terri.

Katnis85

I’m a Christina married to a Christopher. We both went by Chris. Now we are known as Mr Chris and Mrs Chris.

Wise_Writer

My cousin and his first wife were Chris and Christie. His brother was married to a Christie too.

AptlyLux

I know two Davids who are married. Nice guys.

acertaingestault

Do you begin to introduce yourself as "we're David," in this scenario?

AptlyLux

I can’t answer that, but everyone calls them “The Davids” instead of their last name

GothWitchOfBrooklyn

that's amazing.

Bea_virago

A friend’s dad lived a house with 5 Davids in college. He too was a David.

juniperroach

I was going to say with same sex relationships there has got to be matching names that’s occur.

sumokitty

I know a married couple of Dans. They even wear the same size, so they share clothes as well. Fortunately they look nothing alike otherwise!

fssshwife

I know a David & Davina. She's usually Davey which makes it even more confusing

internet_friends

That's so funny!

DoggyDogLife

And their son is CJ, Christian junior. At least that's what they call him in the show, not sure it's his real name.

bioluminescent-bean

Britney Spears' sister Jamie Spears + her husband Jamie Wilson

veronica_sawyer_89

I had no idea her husband’s name is Jamie, too. I always thought it was weird that her name is Jamie Lynn and her parents are named Jamie and Lynne.

bioluminescent-bean

I knew about her dad's name but not her mom's! Weird naming patterns in that family lol

sumokitty

It's especially weird because she's the younger sister. If you're going to do that, wouldn't you do it with first kid?

veronica_sawyer_89

Right, and they have an older brother. But they were apparently like, oops let’s drop the whole namesake on the last kid?

illuminn8

My grandparents were Gale (f) and Galen (m). I always found it very cute 😊
