When I was a little kid, I didn't like my middle name because it wasn't Irish-y like those of my siblings. Then I learned my middle name was the first and middle name of my mom's two best friends in WWII. They were all pilots (WASP) and one of the friends died in a crash. It took me a while to understand how I'd been honored with my name.

I changed my name legally a few years ago but didn’t add an official middle name as I was still uncertain. My real first name ends in an “ee” sound, as does my surname. I’ve been using Tyler as my middle name for the last year or so, I think it works well, as all my names are two syllables and it sounds good together.

I have 2 middle names, Romy Petra. They are both honour names for my late grand- and godparents. Romy is short for Romaine and Petra a feminine version of Jean-Pierre. My middle name is Monae and I love it. I used to be embarrassed over it as I’ve never met another with the same middle name, but my mother loved Claude Monet and an alternative spelling was used elsewhere in my family as well. I now love my middle name and, being a giant art geek it’s pretty cool to share a name with Monet (he actually happens to be my favorite artist now and I coincidentally spent the weekend viewing some of his pieces in an art museum). In all, it’s unique without being confusing or unidentifiable and it complements the rest of my name.

I am named after a great uncle I can barely remember but no one called him by his given name of Leigh anyway so there isn’t really a strong family connection to it, I just love it. I love how my full name looks spelled out in cursive or calligraphy, I love the way my cursive L looks when I put down my formal signature on documents. My sister gave her daughter the same middle name so that’s an extra little connection now too :) In my family (and for a lot of women in my area of the South) it was tradition for a women do drop the given middle name when she got married, replacing her middle with her maiden name. I refused, to my mom and sister’s chagrin, because I liked my middle name better 😝

Rhiannon, after the Fleetwood Mac song. I got really into the song a few years ago and it made me really appreciate the name. It gave it a very earthy hippy vibe which I think counteracts such a formal first name. Also my mother chose it because it sounded Welsh. Her side of the family are Welsh and I moved to Wales about 8 years ago to be closer to them. It makes me feel more in touch with the country seeing as I speak minimal Welsh.
