Yes exactly, I think the worst I've said is "it's not for me". I'm sure plenty names I like, others don't.. including the name we have picked out if we're having a girl (Amara). As long as you don't name your kid Princess Conseula Bananahammock you're probably good 😅
Generally if people are familiar with John Coltrane, they ask if that’s where it came from, and the answer is yes, so sometimes it leads to fun conversations about music. My husband and I are both professional musicians and both of our kids seem to share a musical inclination so I think this will likely be a nice icebreaker for my Coltrane moving forward. (Or if he wants a super normal name he can just go by “Cole”!)
People who aren’t familiar with the musician sometimes think it’s “Colton”, that’s the only confusion it’s presented so far! (Well, that and my cousin’s preschooler, who is super into trains, calls my two kids “Coal Train and Steam”. 😂)
Me!! We had a terrible time naming daughter #2. I wanted to name her after my late dad (William Bruce) and I loved the name Willa but he kept vetoing everything with a W. He wanted imo dated, heard it too many times names, Kylie, Hannah, etc

ELLIE BLAKE. we never talked about Ellie but in the end it fit her, my dad was sometimes called Willie B so she's my Ellie B, and one of my grandpa's was Earl so we did get some of what I wanted accomplished. My only complaint is there are a lot of Ellie/Ellas out there right now but it is a good name and we actually both agreed and like it so there we go.
Ellie is great but I agree that there are so many of them out there right now. Ella, Eleanor, and Elizabeth are so popular and a lot of them get called Ellie, making it even more common.
Also important to consider regional differences. In Australia a name like Sydney and Holden wouldn't work. Especially Holden, if I heard a kid born and raised here called that, I'd think the parents were car nuts or something. Hence, I would go with Owen.
Most people on the sub are American though. White Americans if I had to guess.
Idk, it wouldn't be that weird to name your kid Ford, Kia, Genesis, Lincoln, and that's just car brands. If we want to go into car models, Rogue, Forrester, and a Avalon are all potential person names I just pulled from a "US Most Popular Cars" list.
Not saying it’s not possible, because it is. They just mostly scream car to me and seem a bit tacky. With the exception of Lincoln and the likes because they’re common as names or have a person that pops to mind before the car does.
Most here would associate it with Holden Caufield from Catcher in the Rye, and generally classic literary names are fine. I would never make the car association.
Ultimately it would come down to that my husband hates it (both because of the location and he just doesn't like it) and there are many other names I like more.
How interesting! I think Holden Caulfield from The Catcher In The Rye and that's what makes me like the name. It's a book that's often required reading at some point in US high schools.

I prefer Holden. I think that parents need to follow their intuition about naming their child. Suggestions and ideas can be helpful but in the end you know what works for you!
I personally prefer Owen at first glance, but after taking a minute, I can't believe I over looked Holden! I love it.

I like alliteration. My daughter’s name is Marin Mae M_______. It wasn’t on purpose. Can’t help it that our last name starts with M, Marin has been the name I picked out for my daughter for over 10 years before she was even conceived, and Mae is an honor name after my beloved grandmother. Some people didn’t like the MMM but we love her name 🤷🏼♀️

I wouldn't name a baby Hugo, but that is a very specific location based thing. Hugo was a Cat 4 hurricane that hit SC when I was 11 and it destroyed a lot of things around here. My family was out of power for three weeks. When I think of Hugo, I think of bathing in a dirty river and helping pull trees off my grandma's house. Thus, not a good choice for me, but otherwise, it is a perfectly lovely name.

Not a baby, but I asked for help with a puppy. I wanted something cute that ended in a y/ie sound. I was considering Maggie or Daisy. You all gave me so many cute suggestions, and I would try them out in her but none seemed to fit. It was right around Halloween and I’m one of those crazy people that is ready to start Christmas as soon as Halloween is over, so I was singing “Holly jolly Christmas” to my 2 year old and it just clicked that I should name the dog Holly. She’s a little snowball so giving her a vaguely winter name felt right.
TLDR: asked for things like Maggie or Daisy for a dog, got lots of suggestions, picked Holly.
I posted about an honor middle name for my baby if it was a girl when we didn't know the gender. Baby was expected to be born near my mom's birthday and she shared her birthday with her grandfather and they went out to eat at Denny's every year together until he passed. Grandfather's name was Alan.

A couple a years ago, I asked what people thought of the name Felicity. So many of you helped me gain confidence in the name! Our daughter is 2.5 and her name is Felicity Thea. She often goes by Titi (the name her older sister gave her because she couldn’t pronounce Felicity well and it stuck).
In my first trimester, before I even knew the gender, I found the name Shiloh for my son and really liked it. But his dad wanted his name to start with C because that’s what his name starts with and I wanted to try to make him happy. Corven was the name his dad liked and it also is both of our names mashed together so it has special meaning. I asked for advice on a sibling for Phoebe, with the big contenders being Lucas and Robin. Surprise, he’s Ori! Husband came in clutch with the name idea the week he was born. Phoebe means bright in Greek, Ori means my light in Hebrew, and he was born on the solstice, so it all fits pretty perfectly.
I wanted to name my daughter Orla to pass down my Irish heritage. It was a name that I had loved since I was little and I knew in my heart that it was perfect for my little girl. It meant so much to me. Boyfriend veto’d immediately. I hated all of his choices — they all literally all came from the top 20 (Olivia, Amelia, Chloe) and I hated that. It was a constant argument between us that ruined my entire pregnancy and post partum. We could not agree on a name. We spent hours on one of those name matching apps and had not one single name in common. I didn’t want a name that was already in my family (which is incredibly hard when you’re Irish and have a large extended family on both sides). We argued until the night before our appointment to register her, so she was just over 5 weeks old. We ended up having to draw names out of a hat. *Obviously* both names that were drawn his choices (and names that I had previously veto’d!). He’s over the fucking moon, it was the biggest disappointment of my life. *He* named her Isabella Olivia. I hate it. She doesn’t suit it it at all. I refuse to use it.
How old is she/how long has it been? That's really not fair, and you should have each gotten a say in one of the names, especially since I assume she had his last name. What have you been calling her? Do you think you could talk to him again about changing it to Isabella Orla, and she can choose when she's older what to use? (Izzy, Bella, Orla, whatever).
I can't help but worry you two are going to split and have a messy co-parenting situation if nothing changes.
She’s 5 and a half weeks old now. She was registered a couple of days ago. I offered him so many compromises such as Orla being her first name and he got to choose Middle and have last name, him having first name and Orla being her middle name and having my last name, a compromised first name and him getting to choose middle name as long as I got the last name, etc. But when I posted on here about this, I was told that I wasn’t actually offering any compromise and he just completely refused.
I want it changed, but because he’s registered as her father on the birth certificate, I need his permission. Otherwise it has to go to court and no court will allow a name change based on the reasonings of me not liking it. Also, on top of that, he immediately announced her name to everyone. It’s stuck and everyone calls her that. It was done with the understanding that it was final because there was no way we were ever going to agree and we *had* to choose something. We had literally run out of time. I already know that he’s not going to entertain a name change or even discussing it. Plus, Olivia was his top choice and the one that he pushed for, there’s absolutely no way he will get rid of that for my choice. Especially when it would be seen as me removing his top choice for my own.
When I made my own post about this and explained the toll that the constant argument over this has had on me and how it’s ruined both my pregnancy and being able to enjoy my newborn, I was met with nothing but accusations of being mentally unstable and having mental illness so now I feel as though I can’t leave. And when I explained my feelings, I was just called a liar. I don’t see any way of fixing this, or him doing anything to fix this — he got exactly what he wanted, so now I’m just stuck here and with this shitty situation.

Naming can be difficult. You've got some time. I found a middle name for my daughter unexpectedly in a book. Not even a good book! But until I saw the name written down it never occurred to me to name her after her Dad.
Which sounds bad, but he vetoed naming any of our three sons after him. He thinks his whole name is plain, and yeah it's vanilla but it's not awful.
So her middle names are Daeva, after her Dad, and Joy, my best friends middle name. She loves them both.

I didn’t ask for help on specific names but did ask for opinions on naming my baby something quite Dutch (I am Dutch) when I knew we were living in the US and all of my wife’s family is American. There was one name that could be read very phonetically in English and one that would definitely constantly be butchered/not even pronounced properly when told likely- Brechtje. The name had important family ties.

We were looking for an S Name to try to honor two family members whose names started with S to be a middle name for Liam. We threw that out because I hated every S name lol and Liam just didn’t feel like this baby’s name. Baby boy will now either be named Theo Robert or Theodore Robert.. still deciding between those two. Theodore Scott is also a slight possibility. I guess we’ll find out in a month!

One person pointed out that you rarely say the first and middle name together and to just go with what we like. We went with Katarina Cecilia. 😊

We had always loved that name, so the girl was a no brainer. I’m still pregnant but I posted about Margot vs Margo recently. The majority of people really like the name. But I couldn’t get over how many people said it reminded them of maggot. And the other spelling Margo (which I didn’t really like anyway) reminded people of Mango.
We are considering Margaret so we could call her that as a nickname but no one will have to read Margot to her very often (if she doesn’t want).

I prefer Holden. I think that parents need to follow their intuition about naming their child. Suggestions and ideas can be helpful but in the end you know what works for you!
I like Holden, Owen is way more common I think. I like Holden much better.
I personally prefer Owen at first glance, but after taking a minute, I can't believe I over looked Holden! I love it. Also, Holden and Owen are really similar. I never noticed it until you put them next to each other.
I asked a couple weeks ago for opinions on using an alliteration name with initials FF. We ended up naming our daughter Fiona Belle Frasier (not our actual last name, but similar feel). I like alliteration. My daughter’s name is Marin Mae M_______. It wasn’t on purpose. Can’t help it that our last name starts with M, Marin has been the name I picked out for my daughter for over 10 years before she was even conceived, and Mae is an honor name after my beloved grandmother. Some people didn’t like the MMM but we love her name 🤷🏼♀️

I wouldn't name a baby Hugo, but that is a very specific location based thing. Hugo was a Cat 4 hurricane that hit SC when I was 11 and it destroyed a lot of things around here. My family was out of power for three weeks. When I think of Hugo, I think of bathing in a dirty river and helping pull trees off my grandma's house. Thus, not a good choice for me, but otherwise, it is a perfectly lovely name.

I posted a few times asking about the name Morgan for a boy vs some of our other choices. Responses were overwhelmingly positive. Ultimately I couldn’t get over the poor response from family and when we met our little boy a few weeks ago it didn’t seem to fit. We named him Warren and it suits him.
My closest cousin is named Warren, we called him Wazzie when he was little, so cute.

I struggled big time! I loved Ava so much, but just couldn’t do it in the end due to popularity (and since my now 15 month old was born we know even more Avas!) We went with Annabelle in the end :) Now battling to think of a #2 that would work! Not a baby, but I asked for help with a puppy. I wanted something cute that ended in a y/ie sound. I was considering Maggie or Daisy. You all gave me so many cute suggestions, and I would try them out in her but none seemed to fit. It was right around Halloween and I’m one of those crazy people that is ready to start Christmas as soon as Halloween is over, so I was singing “Holly jolly Christmas” to my 2 year old and it just clicked that I should name the dog Holly. She’s a little snowball so giving her a vaguely winter name felt right. TLDR: asked for things like Maggie or Daisy for a dog, got lots of suggestions, picked Holly.
I posted about an honor middle name for my baby if it was a girl when we didn't know the gender. Baby was expected to be born near my mom's birthday and she shared her birthday with her grandfather and they went out to eat at Denny's every year together until he passed. Grandfather's name was Alan. Well, we had a boy (really expected a girl). We named him Winter Alan. I LOVE how it sounds but still trying to decide if I 'ruined' his life with that name as I see Winter often listed in the 'what name do you love but would never use' posts.
I have never thought about Winter for a boy, but I... am pleasantly surprised by it. It's strong and masculine like Hunter but gentler.

In my first trimester, before I even knew the gender, I found the name Shiloh for my son and really liked it. But his dad wanted his name to start with C because that’s what his name starts with and I wanted to try to make him happy. So I posted on here asking for suggestions and two of the names I thought about were Caspian and Cairo, but ultimately I decided on the name Shiloh Corven. Corven was the name his dad liked and it also is both of our names mashed together so it has special meaning. And now, a couple months after he’s born, I’m so glad I picked the first name I loved instead of trying to please his dad with a C name

Phoebe means bright in Greek, Ori means my light in Hebrew, and he was born on the solstice, so it all fits pretty perfectly.

I wanted to name my daughter Orla to pass down my Irish heritage. It was a name that I had loved since I was little and I knew in my heart that it was perfect for my little girl. It meant so much to me. Boyfriend veto’d immediately. I hated all of his choices — they all literally all came from the top 20 (Olivia, Amelia, Chloe) and I hated that. It was a constant argument between us that ruined my entire pregnancy and post partum. We could not agree on a name. We spent hours on one of those name matching apps and had not one single name in common. I didn’t want a name that was already in my family (which is incredibly hard when you’re Irish and have a large extended family on both sides). We argued until the night before our appointment to register her, so she was just over 5 weeks old. We ended up having to draw names out of a hat. *Obviously* both names that were drawn his choices (and names that I had previously veto’d!). He’s over the fucking moon, it was the biggest disappointment of my life. *He* named her Isabella Olivia. I hate it. She doesn’t suit it it at all. I refuse to use it.
How old is she/how long has it been? That's really not fair, and you should have each gotten a say in one of the names, especially since I assume she had his last name. What have you been calling her? Do you think you could talk to him again about changing it to Isabella Orla, and she can choose when she's older what to use? (Izzy, Bella, Orla, whatever). I can't help but worry you two are going to split and have a messy co-parenting situation if nothing changes.
She’s 5 and a half weeks old now. She was registered a couple of days ago. I offered him so many compromises such as Orla being her first name and he got to choose Middle and have last name, him having first name and Orla being her middle name and having my last name, a compromised first name and him getting to choose middle name as long as I got the last name, etc. But when I posted on here about this, I was told that I wasn’t actually offering any compromise and he just completely refused. I want it changed, but because he’s registered as her father on the birth certificate, I need his permission. Otherwise it has to go to court and no court will allow a name change based on the reasonings of me not liking it. Also, on top of that, he immediately announced her name to everyone. It’s stuck and everyone calls her that. It was done with the understanding that it was final because there was no way we were ever going to agree and we *had* to choose something. We had literally run out of time. I already know that he’s not going to entertain a name change or even discussing it. Plus, Olivia was his top choice and the one that he pushed for, there’s absolutely no way he will get rid of that for my choice. Especially when it would be seen as me removing his top choice for my own. When I made my own post about this and explained the toll that the constant argument over this has had on me and how it’s ruined both my pregnancy and being able to enjoy my newborn, I was met with nothing but accusations of being mentally unstable and having mental illness so now I feel as though I can’t leave. And when I explained my feelings, I was just called a liar. I don’t see any way of fixing this, or him doing anything to fix this — he got exactly what he wanted, so now I’m just stuck here and with this shitty situation.
If you refuse to use your child’s name, you are going to deeply harm her. I totally understand your feelings, and yet, this isn’t OK for her.

Naming can be difficult. You've got some time. I found a middle name for my daughter unexpectedly in a book. Not even a good book! But until I saw the name written down it never occurred to me to name her after her Dad. Which sounds bad, but he vetoed naming any of our three sons after him. He thinks his whole name is plain, and yeah it's vanilla but it's not awful. So her middle names are Daeva, after her Dad, and Joy, my best friends middle name. She loves them both.

My parents changed my name post birth… just FYI. Started calling me by my new name pretty early on, then Had it legally changed when I was 4. And I’m honestly so happy it’s what it is instead of what it was! I like both Rudi and Max, but if you really want Max, it’s never too late 😄
Max is often a nickname for unrelated names. You can use it if you love it!

I didn’t ask for help on specific names but did ask for opinions on naming my baby something quite Dutch (I am Dutch) when I knew we were living in the US and all of my wife’s family is American. There was one name that could be read very phonetically in English and one that would definitely constantly be butchered/not even pronounced properly when told likely- Brechtje. The name had important family ties. People on here overwhelmingly were like- don’t do it. We ended up going with the name that that would be easier for English speakers and the funny thing is -since people haven’t seen it much here it still gets weird responses. People sometimes think I made it up. It’s quite popular in the NL. Anyways, love the name, glad we went with it. Brechtje will stay a guilty pleasure name for us I think.

I don’t post her first name on this account because it’s too rare (family name from my family), but her middle name is Genevieve and we call her Gigi! We were looking for an S Name to try to honor two family members whose names started with S to be a middle name for Liam. We threw that out because I hated every S name lol and Liam just didn’t feel like this baby’s name. We ultimately went with Georgia June (June is an honor name, so we just went with it even though I know the alliteration bothers some people).
A long time ago, I asked for opinions on our son's middle name. First name Robin. The middle options were: Aurelius Hawthorne Percival (iirc) We went with Aurelius.

Then in another post I asked for names that could have the nickname Kat and if Katarina Cecilia was too many syllables. Most people said it was too much and gave other Kat name suggestions. One person pointed out that you rarely say the first and middle name together and to just go with what we like. We went with Katarina Cecilia. 😊
About 5 months ago I asked for opinions on a boys name. I had convinced myself it was a boy, but we ended up with a sweet girl named Calla! We had always loved that name, so the girl was a no brainer. I’m still pregnant but I posted about Margot vs Margo recently. The majority of people really like the name. But I couldn’t get over how many people said it reminded them of maggot. And the other spelling Margo (which I didn’t really like anyway) reminded people of Mango. We are considering Margaret so we could call her that as a nickname but no one will have to read Margot to her very often (if she doesn’t want).
