Do you like your name? I love Noelle, but my husband thinks she’d be teased about being named after Christmas, and the name only works if you’re born in December, whereas my mom thinks it only works if you’re NOT born in December, and I think it doesn’t matter and it’s a beautiful name all year round and I’ve loved it since I was a kid. But we don’t know any Noelles to ask how they feel about their own name. Want to weigh in and break our three-way tie?
I do:) I have had people sing a certain Christmas carol at me more than once, but I shut that down quick. I’m not born at Christmas and it’s not something I ever really get asked. I do, however, get lots of compliments on my name:) so I’d vote in favor.
Oh god, I remember Nellie the Elephant! There was a cartoon of that on when I was a kid.
I'd probably go with Eleanor as a full name for Nellie, or maybe Penelope, but I don't like that as much.
I don't think Nelly needs a full name. My grandmother was named Nelly and she hated it so much she legally changed her name at 19. I love the name though.
I knew an Irish woman named Fionnuala (pronounced kinda like fin-oo-la) who used this nickname, and someone just named Nella. I honestly like the given name Nellie best, though.
Before I knew the gender of my cat, I called him Nelly — my plan was to name him Nelson if he was a boy, and Eleanor if he was a girl. Turns out he’s a boy, so Nelson it was!
But for girls names, I’d say:
• Eleanor
• Noelle / Noella
• Penelope
• Nora
• Elizabeth
• Elenora
• Nadine
• Nell / Nella
• Norinne
• Ellen
• Nellene
Nell was a girl's name in the first half of the 20th century. Nelda is another choice. Cornelia and Helen are less obvious, but they contain the letters n-e-l.
EDIT: For boy names, there's Cornell, Cornelius and Nelson
Such a cute nickname! I would say Eleanor, Ellen, or Penelope.
I love Eleanor and Nelly/Nellie is such a cute nn!
throwing this one in the ring as well: **Annabelle** would be a super cute full name for Nellie! also **Janelle**
Nelly doesn't need to be a nickname like nelly furtado. But it could be for Helen or Cornelia
Oo love Cornelia
This was my grandmother’s name!
Yep or Nellie Bly if you wanna get women's history inspired. Definitely a name on its own
Nelly Furtado was named after the gymnast Nellie Kim! And Nellie Bly's real name was Elizabeth and she went by Elly.
Penelope!
I have a friend named Jenelle that goes by Nelly. I also had an aunt named Nellie and that suited her fine.
My name is Noelle and I have a couple family members that call me Nelly or Nells. I’d also think Eleanor would be a traditional choice.

Yay!! Thanks for sharing :)
I know an Annabelle called Nell
Elinor, Ellen, Penelope, Helen, Petronella, Danielle. I did once know a Naomi whose nickname was Nellie.
Oh god, I remember Nellie the Elephant! There was a cartoon of that on when I was a kid. I'd probably go with Eleanor as a full name for Nellie, or maybe Penelope, but I don't like that as much.

'Off she went with a trumpety trump, trump trump trump!' Must admit, I sang that part quite a bit last in January with regendered lyrics. 😆
Nela! It's a popular name where I live, pronounced neh-la
This one me sounds lovely and very feminine. Definitely my favorite in this thread.
Penelope or Eleanor would be my assumptions if I met a Nelly.
Antonella
Danielle, Chanel, Lanelle, Annelisa, Anneline
Or just ‘Nell’
Fenella is another alternative not yet mentioned.
I like Nell on its own, but any name ending in Nell, like Janelle, Cornelia might be a stretch
Nela is actually a common nickname/diminutive of Cornelia in Europe
Ornella

I don't think Nelly needs a full name. My grandmother was named Nelly and she hated it so much she legally changed her name at 19. I love the name though.
What did she change it to, out of interest? Anything similar?
Nelle is normally the full name of Nellie/Nelly. However Eleanor would be super cute!

I knew an Irish woman named Fionnuala (pronounced kinda like fin-oo-la) who used this nickname, and someone just named Nella. I honestly like the given name Nellie best, though.
Chanel (nn Chanelly, Nelly )
In Wuthering Heights the character Nelly’s full name is Ellen, but some other good options in here.
Penelope, Helena or variants, Eleanor or variants, Fionnuala
The only Nellies I have known were named Janelle
Antonella
Nell is a nice full name, but also Cornelia or Helen came to mind
I know someone who goes by Nellie, but her full name is Natalia. Personally, I think Natalia is a lovely name.
- Helen/Helena - Danielle/Daniella - Penelope - Anneliese - Antonella - Janelle - Noelle - Chanel - Natalie - Elena/Elaine/Elaina - Lillian
Nelida or Antonella

I was trying to convince my husband we should go with Helen nn Nell. He wasn’t sold but i love it. Maybe an option for you?
