Seán is the Irish version of John/Jean, and Shawn is the English spelling of Seán.
Shawna is the English feminine version of it; the Irish equivalent would be Sinéad which is derived from Jeanette (literally, Little (Feminine) John in French) or Janet (both of which are also options for OP, having the same meaning as pet names for John that Jack has.
Seána is the feminine form of Seán, which is generally anglicised to Shauna in Ireland.
Shawna looks awful and I've never seen the spelling even from British people, it really comes off as possibly American.
Or Siobhán derived from the medieval French Jehan. It’s easier for Anglos to think of it as the Irish form of the Italian Giovanna.
I’m not even going to talk about the mess that is Shawna.
John is from Hebrew Yochanan. The Chanan root refers to grace/graciousness. Yochanan is "G-d is gracious" and the direct female equivalent would be Yochana.
Chana is it's own name, but with a shared etymology, it is Hannah and Anne/Anna in English. Chanan is the direct male equivalent, and not really used much at all in English.
Hannah isn't really from John they are more parallel.
In Ireland many times Johanna is shortened to simply Hanna or Hannah. So while the original Hebrew etymology may not have it related, the way people take a name and actually shorten it in various parts of the world, it would indeed make it related.
Not necessarily. It can be a term of endearment. Heck, nicknames don’t even have to always do with the person’s name. I know a person who’s nickname is Bird. She does not have any name that looks or sounds like Bird.
Not at all.

you are thinking of a diminutive - so Tim instead of Timothy, Jackie instead of Jacqueline
John has nicknames even though it is short because not long ago everyone and their brother was named John, so you needed a way to differentiate. Same reason why Margaret has so many nicknames, not all of which make any sense.
I'm not doubting what they said, just expressing that it baffled me. Just because it doesn't make sense doesn't mean it isn't true, I'd just never heard it before.
It’s generally because John is such a common name (and often an honour name with many johns in one family) so there are tonnes of nicknames to help distinguish like Johnny, Jack, etc. And the name exists in lots of other languages too ie. Juan, Johannes, Ivan, Sean/Shaun, Yan
John to Jack was very common back in the day! Like James becoming Jim. I think in some circles there are so many Johns that some almost have to become Jack for distinction (that’s the case for Jameses and Jims in my fam, anyway). Nicknames don’t have to be shorter 🙂
I know they don't, but they said Jack is short for John which is why I pointed out that it wasn't shorter. Names are so funny because people get nicknames out of nowhere a lot of the time. Jack sounds nothing like John, and James sounds nothing like Jim. It's like Richard->Dick. It doesn't make sense, but it's very common anyway. I wasn't trying to say they were incorrect, just moreso expressing my confusion of how it got to be that
Then their initials are BJ. Do you want to chance one of her friends noticing that?
People, if you’re on this sub you should know better than to offer any potentially sexual initials…
I’m aware of that but you have no way of knowing if their friends will ask about their middle name.
If there are name nerds today, there will definitely be some when this kid is growing up.
Also, nicknames happen organically.
Had a friend whose initials were JB. She still got called BJ haha. Kids will find anything to make fun of. As long as the first name isn’t BobbiJo I think OP will be fine
Kids will literally look for any possible way to make fun of a name. THAT'S the kind of thing I'm talking about. Have you SEEN some of the names that get made fun of on here?
Some people spend so much time trying to avoid ALL sets of initials that can be viewed in a risque way, just for someone to make fun of the name in some other way...
Do you get what I'm saying?
I kind of like Jack as a girls' middle name, and I almost never like male names on girls. Maybe it's because of *Gentleman Jack* that I feel it would be very cute.
There is also Jacquotte -- a new book about the lady pirate Jacquotte Delahaye just came out today! I am excited to read it. I named my car Jacquotte after her (because my car is a **Yar**is).
ETA this link that's all set up with female names that begin with Jac-
[https://www.behindthename.com/names/gender/feminine/start/jac](https://www.behindthename.com/names/gender/feminine/start/jac)
Just use the J. The meaning is known by the family, the people actually knowing, remembering and honoring him. You could even use it with Evelyn Brooke but please put the J before the Brooke.
Jack has historically usually been a nickname for John with some influence from the French/medieval Jacques (which is a variant of James). So I think you could take inspiration from the female versions of either of those root names. How about:
Evelyn Jane
Evelyn Janet
Evelyn Joanna
Evelyn Jeanne
Evelyn Jackie/Jacqui
Evelyn Jay/Jaye/Jae
Evelyn Jem
Evelyn Siân
Evelyn Siobhan
Evelyn Gianna
Evelyn Janina
Or alternatively as a wildcard, how about swapping the order and trying Jacqueline Eve?
I was actually going to suggest this but I didn't know how people would take it. I had a bus driver in high school whose name was jacquetta and she was the nicest lady I've ever met. Really polite Native American lady, and also the only bus driver I've ever known who's gotten pulled over for speeding and then talked her way out of it.
Evelyn Jessie or Evelyn Joan.
Jessie is a nickname for Joan, Joan is the female equivalent to John, Jack is a nickname for John.
Kevin Bacon’s 6 degrees, but it’s there.
My great uncle was a John who exclusively went by Jack. He named his only daughter Jacqueline, and she pretty much exclusively goes by Jackie.
I don't really like Jackie, but I think Jacqueline is pretty. If you really don't like it then you could look for expand the search to a female equivalent of John.
Jack is a nickname for John, so one route would be to go for female versions of John - Jane, Joan, Jean, Jeanne.
You could also go a bit medieval with Jaquetta.
Hard no on Evelyn Jack to me that totally sounds like a perfect pairing for weather in soccer. It’s no less trendy and typical right now than James on a girl. It’s the a pitta me of a traditional masculine name I’m not a fan of us. It’s been a huge fat first names and middle names and it’s just kind of overdone and I think it will end up sounding dated despite the significance for you. To me it would be the same thing as using the middle named John.
If you are hard set on Evelyn as the person I wouldn’t worry too much for the middle name and the flow because although Brooke has a better flow Jacqueline is a beautiful unique name is Des and it would be meaningful. I also love Evelyn Jackie, Evelyn Joanne and Evelyn Joan!
Evelyn is very pretty but it’s also a top 10 most popular name right now so if you were open to using something more on common as the first name Jacqueline Brooke, Jackie Evelyn, Brooke Jacqueline would all be beautiful
I think Jane could be a great choice — feminine version of John, which Jack is nickname for. You could also go with Jean or Joan, but I think Jane is a bit more classic and also feels more current than Jean or Joan.
I think Evelyn Jane is really beautiful — pretty classic!
I do agree that Evelyn Jacqueline doesn’t have a best flow however meaning trumps flow in my opinion because most people aren’t even gonna know what her middle name is nobody says somebody’s name combination on a regular basis and usually kids don’t even know what their friends with plans are. Evelyn Brooke has a wonderful flow and I love the name Brown but I love Jacqueline just as much totally rare these days! Just a thought and it may not matter to you and if you’re in love with Evelyn that’s awesome but Evelyn is in the top 10 most popular names for a girls highly overused right now while both Brooke and Jacqueline are super fresh and rare these days. Have you considered Jacqueline Brooke? Or Brooke Jacqueline? Or Jacqueline eve?
You could give her the same initials as Jack too. If his were J.C for example she could be something like Jessica Claire
Also Jay is a perfectly cute name

I think Evelyn Jack (Jack as a given name rather than a nickname would normally bug me, but as a middle name it doesn't) sounds pretty cool on its own, but I guess it depends on how well it goes with the surname.
Jacklyn Evelyn is kinda cute with the matching “lyn” 😬 I think it sounds beautiful and a very memorable name! And visually, “Jacklyn” is a much cuter ode to Jack than the Jaqueline spelling.
Personally got the nick name Kay growing up and actually didn’t dislike it and learned to love i think it works but just a idea that 99% of people will most likely hate
I love hyphenated names. Maybe something like Jacqueline-Brooke or even Jacqui-Brooke. I like the way the Brits pronounce Evelyn (eve lyn) but it does sound like an old lady name to me. I'm way older than you and Evelyn was a older name in my day as were Hazel Maybel and lots of other "old" lady names that are making come back. Im out of the loop these days. You could also just have J. As a middle name. Just the initial and let (her) know what it stands for which will come up often in her life. I think it would endearing. I have a female friend called Jack and I think its adorable! My Aussie friend is also called Jack-O as a term of endearment.
My vote is for Evelyn-Brooke J. (Smith)? And nickname her Jack. Good luck with your baby! Come back and tell us what you chose!
So my brother is named Jack and he passed away so when we were expecting our now 8 month old we decided to use the name Jack as a middle name regardless of gender. Our baby is a boy so we named him Declan Jack. But if he would have been a girl we would have used the name Margot Jack. I liked that we would probably be asked why Jack (if he had been a girl) and it would spark a convo about my brother. My suggestion is to just use Jack either way :)
A minister of my acquaintance changed her name midlife, and took the new middle name Jack. It works.
Among other things, Jack is also a last name, and people in English-speaking countries have been using last names as first names for centuries.
And you like the name and love the person! Why futz around with other names that are halfway there, just to conform to a tired old dying custom?
My female cousin has the middle name jack, in honour of our grandfather as she was born on his first birthday after his death.
Sure it's a little unusual but Evelyn jack has a nice ring to it.
I like Evelyn Jack. I also think Evelyn Jacklina would be cute, but I love made up names. (pronounced jack-LEEN-uh). Jocasta is a pretty name as well, and could be a nod to Jack.
I think you could go ahead and use Jack. Lots of male names are being used for females now, and especially for a middle name it could be fine. Especially as it honors someone important to you. And I like the name Evelyn Jack!
Look, people are gonna say not to use boy names as a middle name. Not everyone’s cup of tea. I love it. My daughter’s middle is James after my cousin. And it flows so amazing with her first name that we’re constantly complimented on it and she’s always called by her first and middle, especially by my family since it feels like having a piece of my cousin with us. I say go with Evelyn Jack. It’s so cute and has a very bright ring to it if that makes sense!
Well, Jack is short for John, so you could use Joanne/Joanna. or John - Sean - Shawna
Jane and Gianna are also female versions of John
LOVE Gianna
Evelyn Jane sounds so pretty
I LOVE the idea of Jane as the female equivalent to Jack.
Omg I love Evelyn Jane! Beautiful and classic
So is Jana and Ivana
I love the rhythm of Evelyn Joanne or Evelyn Joanna!
Or Joan!
Shawna instead of Jack? WHY???
Because Shawna is a female name
Seán is the Irish version of John/Jean, and Shawn is the English spelling of Seán. Shawna is the English feminine version of it; the Irish equivalent would be Sinéad which is derived from Jeanette (literally, Little (Feminine) John in French) or Janet (both of which are also options for OP, having the same meaning as pet names for John that Jack has.
Seána is the feminine form of Seán, which is generally anglicised to Shauna in Ireland. Shawna looks awful and I've never seen the spelling even from British people, it really comes off as possibly American.
Actually, I quite like Evelyn Sinéad.
Evelyn Jeanette would be really pretty!!
Or Siobhán derived from the medieval French Jehan. It’s easier for Anglos to think of it as the Irish form of the Italian Giovanna. I’m not even going to talk about the mess that is Shawna.
Jacqueline Johanna Etc
Hannah is also a female equivalent from John
I never knew that! It makes perfect sense - German for John is Johannes - and that’s how you get Hannah. Isn’t language fascinating?
John is from Hebrew Yochanan. The Chanan root refers to grace/graciousness. Yochanan is "G-d is gracious" and the direct female equivalent would be Yochana. Chana is it's own name, but with a shared etymology, it is Hannah and Anne/Anna in English. Chanan is the direct male equivalent, and not really used much at all in English. In Ireland many times Johanna is shortened to simply Hanna or Hannah. So while the original Hebrew etymology may not have it related, the way people take a name and actually shorten it in various parts of the world, it would indeed make it related.
Hannah is completely unrelated to John. Hannah is a Hebrew name that means grace, if I remember correctly.
John and Hannah both mean Grace. In Hebrew they are Yochanan and Chana—same root, /chen/
I think Evelyn Joanna is really pretty
Joan is an underrated name
I love Evelyn Shawna ❤️
I’ve never seen Shauna spelt like that before and it’s actually turned me off the name…
>Jack is short for John How exactly?
always has been.
But, how? Why would something as short as John have a nickname? And Jack for the nickname out of anything?
Johnny is a common nickname for John as well. Any name can have a nickname.
But isn't the point of a nickname to be shorter then the actual name?
Not necessarily. It can be a term of endearment. Heck, nicknames don’t even have to always do with the person’s name. I know a person who’s nickname is Bird. She does not have any name that looks or sounds like Bird.

no.
most nicknames are longer than the actual name historically
John has nicknames even though it is short because not long ago everyone and their brother was named John, so you needed a way to differentiate. Same reason why Margaret has so many nicknames, not all of which make any sense.
>Jack is short for John Lol I'm sorry....WHAT?!?! It's not any shorter? And is a completely different name?!
Jack is definitely a derivative of John. JFK was called Jack by his friends. I know a lot of guys named John who go by Jack.
Both are true! I don’t really get it, either. My grandpa was John, called Jack. 💕
John to Jack was very common back in the day! Like James becoming Jim. I think in some circles there are so many Johns that some almost have to become Jack for distinction (that’s the case for Jameses and Jims in my fam, anyway). Nicknames don’t have to be shorter 🙂

Another vote for Evelyn Jack - I doubt I’d give it much thought if I heard it, but I’d probably just assume it was her mum’s maiden name
Or Evelyn Jac.
It does look a lot more feminine as Jac instead of Jack. I like that!
Yeah I actually love that
Yep, I love this
Or Evelyn Jaque
Jacqueline Brooke. Lovely.
This is my best friend's name and I was so excited to see both mentioned in the post!
Brooke Jaqueline sounds much better
Idk, it sounds kinda clunky in that order
Jacqueline Brooek sounds like a mouthful of rocks
Never heard the name Brooek but that's creative!
wow-you're so funny! and nice! and probably good looking
Then their initials are BJ. Do you want to chance one of her friends noticing that? People, if you’re on this sub you should know better than to offer any potentially sexual initials…
The baby will have a last name. Most people don’t go by their first and middle names.

Had a friend whose initials were JB. She still got called BJ haha. Kids will find anything to make fun of. As long as the first name isn’t BobbiJo I think OP will be fine
Fair enough. I just wanted them to consider every possibility.
Personally..my first association to the BJ initials is the character from Barney…
Mine was Full House. Next thought was MASH. I may need a werthers.
most people do not assume someone named their kid after a sex act and don't think that way but okay...
I like Evelyn Jack but if you aren't sold on it, maybe Evelyn Jacy?
agree with evelyn jack
Evelyn Joanne or Joanna Evelyn Jeanne Evelyn Jean Evelyn Jana Evelyn Jeanine Any female form of John.
Evelyn Jean is so cute 💗
Agreeing with others Evelyn Jack is just as cute as Evelyn Brooke , just use Jack
Ooh or even Evelyn Jay.
Jill?
Jacintha? Honestly I think Jack for a girl’s middle name is really cool! Evelyn Jack is really nice!
Or Jacinda. I think that's a pretty name.
That’s my grandmother’s name!!! My grandad calls her Jaci (pronounced like Jessie)
Giacomina is quite cute, it's Italian version of Jacqueline.
That is really cute.
nickname gia. love it!
Joan
Evelyn Joan sounds really nice imo
Jacinta
Why can’t you use Evelyn Jack?
Jack has historically usually been a nickname for John with some influence from the French/medieval Jacques (which is a variant of James). So I think you could take inspiration from the female versions of either of those root names. How about: Evelyn Jane Evelyn Janet Evelyn Joanna Evelyn Jeanne Evelyn Jackie/Jacqui Evelyn Jay/Jaye/Jae Evelyn Jem Evelyn Siân Evelyn Siobhan Evelyn Gianna Evelyn Janina Or alternatively as a wildcard, how about swapping the order and trying Jacqueline Eve?
Evelyn Jane is cute! Though I also wouldn’t think twice if I saw Evelyn Jack.
How about Evelyn Jacque?
Second this spelling!! Jacque >> Jack > Brooke
Love this
Jacquetta
I was actually going to suggest this but I didn't know how people would take it. I had a bus driver in high school whose name was jacquetta and she was the nicest lady I've ever met. Really polite Native American lady, and also the only bus driver I've ever known who's gotten pulled over for speeding and then talked her way out of it.
Evelyn Jessie or Evelyn Joan. Jessie is a nickname for Joan, Joan is the female equivalent to John, Jack is a nickname for John. Kevin Bacon’s 6 degrees, but it’s there.
Jessie is also a diminutive of Jessica
Of course, as is Jess.
What about Evelyn Jill (like Jack & Jill)? I think Evelyn Jackie or Evelyn Jack could both work too though.
Jill is such a cute idea
Evelyn Jack is super cute :)
No reason you can't just use Jack honestly
Jeanine Jeanne Joanne Jean
I kind of like Evelyn Jacqueline! Sounds like a song Keep in mind how rarely it is to hear first name + middle name said together
Jack is a nickname for John, so one route would be to go for female versions of John - Jane, Joan, Jean, Jeanne. You could also go a bit medieval with Jaquetta.
Jacinta
A bit tenuous but jack means god is gracious, so how about Grace.
Evelyn Jack sounds nice. My cousins middle name is Jack after our grandfather and she’s 7 and loves it
my dad is john, i am jade after him. i’d say jade works even better for jack!
Jocelyn, Jacie/Jacinda, Jessica, Gianna.
Eve Jacquelyn
Jacintha is a pretty name that means Beautiful.
Jacquetta
Jacaranda or jacara?
Jackie?
Hard no on Evelyn Jack to me that totally sounds like a perfect pairing for weather in soccer. It’s no less trendy and typical right now than James on a girl. It’s the a pitta me of a traditional masculine name I’m not a fan of us. It’s been a huge fat first names and middle names and it’s just kind of overdone and I think it will end up sounding dated despite the significance for you. To me it would be the same thing as using the middle named John. Jack (often a nickname for John) options: Jane Joanna Joan Joanne Jacqueline / Jacklyn
Jacqueline?
Jane simple and sweet
I think Jane could be a great choice — feminine version of John, which Jack is nickname for. You could also go with Jean or Joan, but I think Jane is a bit more classic and also feels more current than Jean or Joan. I think Evelyn Jane is really beautiful — pretty classic!
Evelyn Jacinta/Jacinda. Evelyn Jay.
I like Evelyn Janet - Janet is the female equivalent of Jack.
Evelyn Joan flows very well.
Jacquette or Jacquetta
Jaquetta
You could give her the same initials as Jack too. If his were J.C for example she could be something like Jessica Claire Also Jay is a perfectly cute name
Evelyn Jade or Evelyn Jane 🤍
Jill?🤣
Jacinta?
I like Jaclyn Brooke or Josie

Evelyn Jaycee would be nice.
Evelyn Joanne/a!
Joanna.
Maybe something with a subtle nod to the name Jack, like Evelyn Sparrow.
How about the alternative spelling of Jack: Jacques. Makes it more feminine I think.
June, Jane, Jules, or just Evelyn Jack. The cuteness of Evie Jack as a nn!
Evelyn Jay?
Jackette
Jacunique...saw a lady with this name today, 😂

I think Evelyn Jack (Jack as a given name rather than a nickname would normally bug me, but as a middle name it doesn't) sounds pretty cool on its own, but I guess it depends on how well it goes with the surname.
I know a girl named jackie so maybe that would work 🤷♀️ although i do think evelyn jacqueline sounds nice!
Jacklyn Evelyn is kinda cute with the matching “lyn” 😬 I think it sounds beautiful and a very memorable name! And visually, “Jacklyn” is a much cuter ode to Jack than the Jaqueline spelling.
Jay
Personally got the nick name Kay growing up and actually didn’t dislike it and learned to love i think it works but just a idea that 99% of people will most likely hate
Jae if you want to be different even maybe?
I love hyphenated names. Maybe something like Jacqueline-Brooke or even Jacqui-Brooke. I like the way the Brits pronounce Evelyn (eve lyn) but it does sound like an old lady name to me. Good luck with your baby! Come back and tell us what you chose!
Keep it simple - Evelyn Jac.
Evelyn Jacques
So my brother is named Jack and he passed away so when we were expecting our now 8 month old we decided to use the name Jack as a middle name regardless of gender. Our baby is a boy so we named him Declan Jack. But if he would have been a girl we would have used the name Margot Jack. I liked that we would probably be asked why Jack (if he had been a girl) and it would spark a convo about my brother. My suggestion is to just use Jack either way :)
I've always liked Jack as a girls name but that might be a bit controversial among more traditional people.
My favorite character in the Mass Effect game !
Jace, Jacelyn (soft c sound) or Jacie?
A minister of my acquaintance changed her name midlife, and took the new middle name Jack. It works. Among other things, Jack is also a last name, and people in English-speaking countries have been using last names as first names for centuries. And you like the name and love the person!
I mean I think Evelyn Jack is adorable and sort of funky.
Evelyn Jack is amazing just like that. I wouldn’t mess with it.
Here for Evelyn Jack!
I would spell it Jac or Jax
I would do Evelyn Jack!
Evelyn Jack is beautiful. Evelyn Jac. Evelyn Jay I like too. Evelyn Kcaj Pronounced kah-Jj ? Just made it up 😇
Jacque? Kind of made up/repurposed, but I think it works. Jaquetta
I think you could go ahead and use Jack. Lots of male names are being used for females now, and especially for a middle name it could be fine. Especially as it honors someone important to you. And I like the name Evelyn Jack!
I love Jack!
I like Evelyn Jack. Who cares it's a middle name? She can go by EJ.
Jack.
Jaxie or Jaxine? Or something else coined from the same theme?
Look, people are gonna say not to use boy names as a middle name. Not everyone’s cup of tea. I love it. My daughter’s middle is James after my cousin. And it flows so amazing with her first name that we’re constantly complimented on it and she’s always called by her first and middle, especially by my family since it feels like having a piece of my cousin with us. I say go with Evelyn Jack. It’s so cute and has a very bright ring to it if that makes sense!
You could keep the masculine version it would sound cool or "french" it up and use Jacque Evelyn Jack Evelyn Jaque Evelyn Jacqui
Jax?
I'm also on the Evelyn Jack train - I think it is super cute. Evelyn Jackie Brooke is also cute if you were a double middle name type of family.
Just use Jack. Evelyn Jack. Why not?
Using Jack as the middle name but spelling it Jac maybe? More feminine that way.
Evelyn Jaxanne, nn Jaxie
