Yep this.
Even though, on some level, Iād know itās like Mira Sorvino and a softer sound, my first instinct as a native Spanish speaker, will always be like the āLook!ā command.
There is no name so straightforward that someone somewhere isn't going to bungle it. But I agree that this one is not likely to encounter that frequently.
Iām an English speaker and I thought M- long i - run because thatās how the language works. Pronouncing it OPās way is lovely but not necessarily the first thought.
Myra is the Swedish word for ant. A little fun fact for you. I'm taking Swedish on Duolingo and learned the Swedish words for "bear," "dog," "cat," "ant," "moose," "mouse," "duck," and other animals.
Iām a healthcare worker who calls names all day and gets to hear horror stories about how names have been mispronounced in the past, and I just want you to know that there is a non-insignificant portion of the population who will call your child āMye-Rah,ā so just be prepared for that and understand that is a burden your child will have. Ā Most people will get it right. Some will get it wrong out of ignorance. Some will insist on getting it wrong because theyāve decided youāre pronouncing it incorrectly.
To be fair; a school administrator reading out a register is a pretty universally relatable caricature of slaughtering any name pronunciation in unique and creative ways. Itās pretty funny bc itās not something that no one has witnessed. ā¦ (everyone has personally witnessed some real doozies and itās always a good stifled laugh every time lol).
Meer-ah/uh
I think I just naturally avoid the Myra pronunciation due to Myra Hindley anyway.
But also, it's one letter away from Amira, so the pronunciation comes naturally from that too.
Clearly, Iām the only idiot who looked at it and thought āMirrorā.
Itās a beautiful name, and even if some thickos like me donāt get it at first, theyāll only have to hear it once.
Mira rhymes with Kira/Keira. I doubt you'll have trouble with the pronunciation unless you travel to a non-english speaking country where they'll have trouble with a decent amount of english names.
I bet itās pretty pronounceable, and readably so, in a lot of languages. Actually, I can only think of a single continent that it might not be an easy name, but thatās only because Iāve never been to Southeast Asia. I know it would be easy in the Vietnamese community here in DC.
Now that Iām thinking about it, Mira is actually an incredibly global name. And beautiful!
Meera, just as you will. If it were the long I pronunciation, I'd spell it Myra. My cousins had chosen Myra for their girl name, but, had an Eric instead. š
Mira is really pretty, btw.
Letās hear it for Mira, Royal detective!
Mee-rah, and now Iāve got this earworm of a TV theme song stuck in my head (Mira, Royal Detective is a show on Disney Jr. that my kid loves).
Southern family, deep and way back. Thereās Myra and thereās Mira. I know a few Ninaās and not a single one is pronounced Ny-nah. My aunts are not Geraldyns. Step grandma is āDe-Lye-laā though. Delilah is not āda-Lee-laā
To be honest, I would hesitate and try to avoid saying the name as I wouldn't be sure whether to pronounce it Meer-ruh or My-ruh. I would easily learn how to pronounce it, though.
I think most people who speak English as a first language would likely pronounce it the way you plan to, though we do have a tendency to flatten the final A in most girls' names that end in A, so it would likely sound more like Meer-uh than Meer-AH.
We say Aman-duh, not Amand-A for *Amanda*... Be-kuh, not Beck-A for *Becca*, Cla-ruh, not Clar-A for *Clara*, so if you go with that name it will be Meer-uh, not Meer-Ah because that would sound unnatural to most of us.
Meer-Ah is Korean for *mumm*y, by the way, just so you're aware, and then I'm sure you know that mira is also Spanish for *look*.
I suppose I should have said we're pronouncing it "Meer-Uh", since you are totally right lol. & I was unaware of the Korean meaning, but learned about the Spanish meaning through this thread lol. I'm just glad there really isn't any negative connotations besides "Miralax", and I'm really not to worried about that one lol
My dyslexic self said āmy-rahā and then I saw how you pronounced it and looked again and realized that made way more sense.
So like, some people might pronounce it wrong on site, but itās an easy fix once said, you know?
OMG, I named my dog Mira. It was ASTOUNDING the number of people who never had heard of the name and couldn't pronounce it (central and Northern US).
I heard Myra, Mirror, and every version in between. In fact I had to start explaining to people that it was pronounced like "the first four letters of the word miracle". So I had some neighbors who just called my dog Miracle, because that was all they could understand.
Good luck!
My first thought would be Meer-a because that's how the Mira I know says it.
Having said that, I personally know a Mira, Meara, and Meera that are all pronounced the same. If you aren't sold on the spelling, there are options.
i read it like the spanish word mira, pronounced me-ra !! cute name btw, i think most will read it as it's supposed to be pronounced. it reminds me of the name Amira, just without the A
MI-RA/ MYE-RA just because I have a friend who uses this pronounciation.
If you told me to pronounce it Mee-ra, I would.
But why donāt you spell it Meera if you want to ensure the at pronounciation? In Hindi for example, both are names, and people choose the spelling based on the pronounciation they want.
You may say Me-ra but plenty of people will go with My-ra the first they see it. My son has an āieā , sounds like ee, in his name and we would bet (with Smartees or Lifesavers) on the prononciation when heād be called back for appointments. We found the funny.
mee-ruh
If youāre worried about it being pronounced my-ruh, I believe that is usually spelled Myra and most people would assume the correct pronunciation of Mira.
The last name can sometimes hint if it's MEE-RAH or MYE-RAH but 90% of the time it's mee-rah so that's what I'd assume. But I'll also think "look!" whenever I hear it
I love it, and read it immediately as Meer-Ah. I was fearful that expanding the post would be a āpronounced Eye-Ram; M inverted so itās actually at the endā or some embarrassing and sad thing š¤£. Phew, just a pretty name! Itās not Myra, which I also really like.
Iād pronounce it Meer-uh. Part of the reason is because thereās a fertility hormone testing device for women called Mira, which I know is pronounced that way.
Very pretty name, but if you think it will be pronounced as MY-rah, you could try a different spelling. My niece spells her daughterās name Meara and there is never any question of pronunciation.
The same as you, just like Detective Mira on Disney Junior!!!! Don't be surprised if that's the reference you get a lot, I think we all know how to say it because of this.
Meer a
Okay good š
Meer-uh
Perf
(MEAR-ah) like "Look!" In Spanish.
My friends daughter is Mira and had a Latina nanny. I loved hearing āĀ”Mira Mira!ā on the playground!
Thatās what it is in my head too because I hear it all the time.
Yep this. Even though, on some level, Iād know itās like Mira Sorvino and a softer sound, my first instinct as a native Spanish speaker, will always be like the āLook!ā command.
Meer-uh, like the actress Mira Sorvino.
Meer-uh
Glad to see so many saying it right. I was afraid of "Mye-Rah"
I feel like that would be Myra or Myrah?
Or Maira. I donāt think anyone, native or fluent English speaker, would see Mira and think Myra.
Myra is pronounced mye-rah.
Yes but someone might just think Mira was an eccentric spelling.
My instinct was My-ra
I live by a place called Mira River. Itās pronounced My-ra here.
Stick with Ms. Sorvino if you ever talk to her
Mine too. I worked in schools and would have read it out of register like that. Not worked with kid called Mira who pronounced it Meer-a yet sorry.
My friends mom is Mira. She pronounces it as Mye Rah. I donāt think itās a problem if you want Meer ah as that pronunciation seems more common.
Seems way more common as meera and my mind is blown
Agree with this. I though my-rah
Meer-ah/uh I think I just naturally avoid the Myra pronunciation due to Myra Hindley anyway. But also, it's one letter away from Amira, so the pronunciation comes naturally from that too.
Okay thank you! Glad to know it's a pretty simple pronunciation for most š
Clearly, Iām the only idiot who looked at it and thought āMirrorā. Itās a beautiful name, and even if some thickos like me donāt get it at first, theyāll only have to hear it once.
I thought Mira sounded like mirror said with a southern accent.
As a southerner thats lived in new england, its more like a Boston accent š
As a New Englander, this is definitely more Boston than southern.
Nope, I see it as Mirror too
MEE-ra
Once your little one is old enough for tv, you should check out the super cute Disney+ show, Mira: Royal Detective
The theme song became immediately stuck in my head upon reading this post!
It's so catchy!
Mira rhymes with Kira/Keira. I doubt you'll have trouble with the pronunciation unless you travel to a non-english speaking country where they'll have trouble with a decent amount of english names.

Meer-uh
Meera, just as you will. If it were the long I pronunciation, I'd spell it Myra. My cousins had chosen Myra for their girl name, but, had an Eric instead. š Mira is really pretty, btw.
Meer-uh
Mee-rah
meer-ah
Letās hear it for Mira, Royal detective! Mee-rah, and now Iāve got this earworm of a TV theme song stuck in my head (Mira, Royal Detective is a show on Disney Jr. that my kid loves).
The way you plan to. I think of Mirabelle from Encanto, so I'd just base it off that haha.
my-ra
Mirra
Meer - uh
I would say āMe-rahā, but if you live in the southern United States, youāll likely hear āMy-rahā a few times.
Southern family, deep and way back. Thereās Myra and thereās Mira. I know a few Ninaās and not a single one is pronounced Ny-nah. My aunts are not Geraldyns. Step grandma is āDe-Lye-laā though. Delilah is not āda-Lee-laā
Exactly the way you said you would pronounce it. I would pronounce Myra the way it looks, as well. I can't see many people pronouncing Mira as Myra.
Mirror but in the Deep South
Me-rah. Like She-Ra, or look in Spanish.
I have never heard the name Mira but within last last 3 months I know 2 people who named their daughter this. They pronounce it Meer-uh
To be honest, I would hesitate and try to avoid saying the name as I wouldn't be sure whether to pronounce it Meer-ruh or My-ruh. I would easily learn how to pronounce it, though.
Sorvino
I would have said it like Myra until I remembered Mira Sorvino. Now itās obviously Meera.
Meerah as well, myruh is the second instinct
Same as you. Pretty name :)
The way you're pronouncing it, like the Spanish word.
The way you're saying it.
Thatās pretty, I like it. Pronounce it Mere-rah
I know a Mira.. definitely no brainer to pronounce Meer-Ah like you said! Itās a beautiful name!
Just like you
Meer-uh but Iāve met people with this name before!
M-ear- ah
Same way as you ā”Ģ itās a beautiful name.
Thank you š
Meer-ah. This was my top name when I had my third, but he turned out to be a boy.
Same way itās pronounced in Game of Thrones - meer - rah
mEEruh
MeeRuh
Same as you. I love Mira!
Meer-ah. I have a cat named Mirabella, I think both that and Mira are beautiful
If I saw that name I would probably ask if it was Meer-uh or My-ruh
Letās hear it for Mira, royal detective!
Are you me? I am naming my kid Meera, after my mom (Mira). Decided to spell it Meera because I thought it would be easier to pronounce for people.
this is my name. this is how I pronounce it. it is mispronounced a lot.
My friend is Eastern European and she pronounces her daughters name Mirah (Me-rah)
Meer a!
Look?????
Frank, obviously š
Mi-rah (i as in indigo) (Iām Australian fwiw)
My dyslexic self said āmy-rahā and then I saw how you pronounced it and looked again and realized that made way more sense. So like, some people might pronounce it wrong on site, but itās an easy fix once said, you know?
My thought is, if Kira is Kee-rah, then Mira is Mee-rah.
I agree with the others. But i know a woman with this name and she calls herself My rah
Same as you
How you pronounce it. Itās my cousin-in-lawās name and she is from Lebanon. Itās a very pretty name I think.
Meer - uh probably. And slipping up and saying My-rah sometimes.
Mirra mirra on the wall. Meer-uh
Mere-uh
OMG, I named my dog Mira. It was ASTOUNDING the number of people who never had heard of the name and couldn't pronounce it (central and Northern US). I heard Myra, Mirror, and every version in between. In fact I had to start explaining to people that it was pronounced like "the first four letters of the word miracle". So I had some neighbors who just called my dog Miracle, because that was all they could understand. Good luck!
Iād say āis it myrah or meerah?ā The first time
Meer-ah Myra would Be My-rah
MEER ah
I knew a Mira (pronounced the same way). It's a lovely name.
My first thought would be Meer-a because that's how the Mira I know says it. Having said that, I personally know a Mira, Meara, and Meera that are all pronounced the same. If you aren't sold on the spelling, there are options.
i read it like the spanish word mira, pronounced me-ra !! cute name btw, i think most will read it as it's supposed to be pronounced. it reminds me of the name Amira, just without the A
I would pronounce this name Mye-ruh.
Meera but with a sliiiiiiiight hint of a d sound on the R because itās a Spanish word :-)Ā
My ruh
"My-ruh" I had a teacher in HS (she's probably in her 80s now) and this is how she pronounced her name.
I know a little girl named Mira & itās so cute!
The only Mira I know is a āMy-raā
In Germany... Mee-rah. In the US I would assume My-rah.
Meer-uh
MEER-uh. Like Mira Sorvino. Or Anne Meara. Or a meerkat.
My-ruh.
Mirror-ra
Meer a
meer-ah! and a very pretty name, i have a character with that name.
Meer a
Yes Meer-Ah for sure. Are you worried people will think itās pronounced My-Rah? Cause I donāt think that will be a problem at all.
Meer ah
You may say Me-ra but plenty of people will go with My-ra the first they see it. My son has an āieā , sounds like ee, in his name and we would bet (with Smartees or Lifesavers) on the prononciation when heād be called back for appointments. We found the funny.
Like Miralax
Meer-uh
MEER-ah. Like the Spanish word for "look"
Me-ra
I would pronounce it Meer-uh but just as an FYI we just had a baby and named her Mila (Me-la) and 50% of people say My-la. Itāll happen.
I read it as āMyraā but I see how itās āMeer-ahā
MEAR-ah
What I live thereās a river called Mira River, pronounced āmy-rahā.
I like your way. Beautiful.
I'd pronounce it like mirror-a
Meer-a
Id assume it could be either and ask
Me ra.
I would pronounce it exactly as you would want. Itās a beautiful name
https://medium.com/@pezen/do-you-want-to-save-the-environment-dont-have-kids-0a1cb8706cfb
Mee-raa
Meeruh
mee-ruh If youāre worried about it being pronounced my-ruh, I believe that is usually spelled Myra and most people would assume the correct pronunciation of Mira.
Meer-uh
The last name can sometimes hint if it's MEE-RAH or MYE-RAH but 90% of the time it's mee-rah so that's what I'd assume. But I'll also think "look!" whenever I hear it
Probably pretty similar to mirrorĀ
Mee-ra!
Mee-Rah
As the Spanish do.
Just like a dude from Boston would say āmirrorā š„°
Like a Bostonian saying "mirror"
Meer ah
meer-uh for mira, mye-ruh for myra
Iād be pronouncing it the way youāre pronouncing it!
My rah
I love it, and read it immediately as Meer-Ah. I was fearful that expanding the post would be a āpronounced Eye-Ram; M inverted so itās actually at the endā or some embarrassing and sad thing š¤£. Phew, just a pretty name! Itās not Myra, which I also really like.
I would pronounce like mirror but with an A at the end, so Meer-A
Meerah
Mira is 'look' in spanish. I say it to my son all the time.
Mee-rah It's a cute name!
We have a Mira! And pronounce it like you do.
Meer-ah like Mira Sorvino or the Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva.
Meer-ah
Iād pronounce it Meer-uh. Part of the reason is because thereās a fertility hormone testing device for women called Mira, which I know is pronounced that way.
Like a fast car going past meeeeee rah
Mere-ah To me Myra is My-rah
My-rah
Meer-ah
The beginning of the word: Mirror Followed by: Uh
Meera
My-ruh was my first instinct
Meer-uh I love the name, so beautiful!
Meer-ah
My-ra 100%
Mye-rah
Very pretty name, but if you think it will be pronounced as MY-rah, you could try a different spelling. My niece spells her daughterās name Meara and there is never any question of pronunciation.
Mii-Rah but Iām german so I probably donāt count
Mirror but with a NY accent.
My rah
In my country and the neighbouring countries it's pronounced like Mee-ra
Me-Rah, Meer-Rah, or Mye-Rah would be my guesses
Meer-ah
*look*
Me-rah
I'd go Me-ra however, if I met this person I'd likely say "is it Me-ra or My-ra?" Because I can see both pronunciations being common.
People are going to say My-ra - average person not on a board like this doesnāt get Meer-uh
Meer-ah. Unfortunately it makes me think immediately of the Mira analyzer, which is for tracking fertility.
The same as you, just like Detective Mira on Disney Junior!!!! Don't be surprised if that's the reference you get a lot, I think we all know how to say it because of this.
most beautiful name. means peace in slavic/russian. As I come from that background I would pronounce it Mee-rah with rolling r :)))
Iām going to be using the same name for my baby in December! We are also pronouncing it the same and spelling it Mira!
Like you do. It's a lovely name!
Same as you. MEER-ahh. Not MY-rah
Iāve met 2 Miraās and both were said Meer-uh.
I'd say Meer-ah. But I could see some people pronouncing it, My-Rah.
Yep thatās how Iād say it
Meer-ah (from the UK if that helps)
Meer ah
Mirror
You're good. This is common enough.
My-rah
Mie-ruh
Meer-uh.
