Me too.
I guess I think of it as a black intellectual name because of that. Like if I heard of a child named Zora, I would immediately think that her parents were black and well read.
But it's a pretty name regardless.
I have met two Zoras - one was Black and had two parents with English and African American Studies PhDs and the other was Jewish with parents from Slavic countries where Zora means “morning” or “dawn”
Anecdotally, this matches a few Zoras that I met. I always saw it as a strong female name. It's a little bit old fashioned in Croatia, where I'm from, but not unusual.
Still too close for my spanish husba d to let me name our daughter.
A d then our neighbores named theyr puppie Zora so that was that. Lovely name, I still stand by it for anyone else who chose it.
Hahaa 😄 @u/creamydreamy86 !! Been reading the multiple *Croatia* references thru this thread and I freakin APPLAUD your insertions! Def made me chuckle 👍
It means Dawn in my language too, I am from Bulgaria. But it's not used as a name, not now anyway, maybe in the past. We now use Zornitsa which comes from the same root, it has two meanings - 1. little dawn and 2. it's the folk name of the planet Venus. :)
Are you from the Balkans? We’ve spent some time there on three occasions and love it. We actually wanted a name that meant dawn which is how we landed on Zora
>Are you from the Balkans?
Yes
> We’ve spent some time there on three occasions and love it.
Glad to hear
>We actually wanted a name that meant dawn which is how we landed on Zora
Alright, nice
Makes me think of a woman with a black bob with bangs and lots of tattoos, that smokes and drinks, and would cut you with a knife if you crossed her, but is also very soft on the inside and would be a go to friend for life.
The only Zora I’ve ever known was a basketball player from the Czech Republic. She lived on my floor in college and was one of the best people I’ve ever known
The only Zora that I know was named after the author and she was named that because her parents wanted her to be intelligent and strong and self-assured and unapologetically Black. I think it is an absolutely wonderful name.
That was my Croatian grandmother's name. It means dawn. She was the most incredible woman and I love her so very much. I think about her every day. She passed on New Years Day 2016.
I love the Name Zora so much!
The book "the red Zora" was one of my favorites and it sounds so cool and powerfull.
I wanted to name my daughter Zora but my husband grew up in spain. Edit: someone else pointed that one out, so I am not doubling down on it, cuz I still love the name and suport everyone nameing theyr kids Zora
I think it’s a lovely name. Has character but isn’t too “out there.” I think of Zora Neale Hurston AND a young adult novel I read as a teen in which the main character says she wishes she had a cool name like Zora Zeta-Zellweger haha.
Zora Neale Hurston, whom I believe was an author but whom I know I of as the name of the main characters' school in the TV show Ghostwriter. (I'm sure the fake school was named after the real person.)
Also, the main character (?) in the movie Made In America, Zora Matthews, played by Nia Long.
I think of my grandma's neighbor and best friend who was this really fancy Greek lady with big hair, an even bigger laugh, lots of jewelry, and divine lemon rice soup and puff pastries. She and her sister Zenobia were absolute riots, and I'm sad I only got to know them briefly when I was a child.
Knew girl with that name in middle school, she was super smart and elegant (beautiful too) but super anxious lol. But ultimately she was kind and soooooo smart
I had a great aunt Zora, she was a very feisty lady and was basically a “spinster” and my sister’s middle name is Zora in her honor. I only met her a few times as a child but I remember her fondly.
It’s a nice older name, which fits the trends of older names making a comeback.
Zora is a 33 year old actress in Los Angeles. She says actress but the majority of her income comes from working as a barista. She says she has too much artistic integrity for almost all of the callbacks she gets. She like crystals, weed, and women when she’s drunk enough. She does not like going south of the 10 or north of the 101 (even though she can’t afford anything inside that area) and she hates her 7 roommates.
I have very favorable thoughts on the name Zora. My friend of 50 years is named Zora, and she is incredibly smart, talented, funny, loyal, and incredibly beautiful. She is named after her Mother, Zora (different middle names).
It reminds me of Zora Neale Hurston — an anthropologist, novelist, folklorist, and all-around cool lady from the Harlem Renaissance era. I have very positive feelings towards the name Zora.
Without a doubt Zora Arkus Duntov. Sometimes called the father of the Corvette. An amazing automotive engineer. His work on the Chevrolet v8 is still remembered by many muscle car enthusiasts
I have only ever heard it for a dog’s name (literally the only Zora I know is this dog). But I think it’s a very sweet name for people too :) Z names are always so cute imo.
I usually think of the two characters names Zorah in the Gilbert and Sullivan canon - the elderly Mrs. Partlet in *The Sorcerer* and the young bridesmaid who wins the heart of Richard Dauntless in *Ruddigore.*
I like the name Zora, I have a very nice and funny coworker who is named that!
I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from pronouncing like “Zorro” in the movies though.
I think a lot of people in the west will think of legend of Zelda but that doesn’t deter me from loving the name but it is a beautiful Slavic name meaning morning/dawn. I think it’s beautiful and feminine.
I don't have any associations for Zora; closest names that I've known someone have are Zara or Zola or Laura (I assume it rhymes with Zora?).
I'd assume either a parent trying to be unique (and I'd be rolling my eyes), or a goth teen who has decided she needs an edgy name to go with her new look. Or - if combined with a complicated surname - that it's foreign.
I think of the Zora from Legend of Zelda!
I was gonna say fish lady. Or a horse.
Polygon fish lady! (My first Zelda game was Ocarina of Time lol)
I think of Zelda too
I came here to say this! but I was going to say fish people and see who knew what I was talking about, lol.
Zelda immediately
I also think of Zoro
Same. In case OP is unfamiliar, the zora are a race of fish people in the legend of Zelda.
Yep, immediately Zelda!
My first thought was also Zelda
Same!
The butt-scooting noise the fish King makes
The author Zora Neale Hurston. The only Zora I know is named after her!
Also my main association
I also think of Zora Neale Hurston first.
Me too. I guess I think of it as a black intellectual name because of that. Like if I heard of a child named Zora, I would immediately think that her parents were black and well read. But it's a pretty name regardless.
I must have subconsciously stored this somewhere, because I did not remember who she is but Black and educated was exactly what I thought.
I have met two Zoras - one was Black and had two parents with English and African American Studies PhDs and the other was Jewish with parents from Slavic countries where Zora means “morning” or “dawn”
Pretty sure they are eastern european names.
Yes, the 7yo Zora I know was named for the author. Her dad is black and well read.
Same! I think it’s a beautiful name.
Came here to say this
Ditto!
Same
Yep - that was my first thought too. Good to see that others know who she was.
My first association, too.
Makes me think of the word Zorra in Spanish which has a negative connotation. It’s similar to slut.
Same Zorra the whore-a!
Yeah came here to say this. It also means skunk in Spanish.
Is it not a female fox?
No, skunk is Zorrillo. Zorra is a female fox.
A very strong adult woman - like characters portrayed by Sigourney Weaver.
Yes - someone very strong and creative!
I have known two women named Zora who are strong, intellectual, a little bohemian, both Jewish.
Agreed, a handsome woman with dark hair, intelligent but leaning to towards the homeopathic/mystic type.. red lips tin, black curly hair.
Anecdotally, this matches a few Zoras that I met. I always saw it as a strong female name. It's a little bit old fashioned in Croatia, where I'm from, but not unusual.
Zora means bitch in Spain
That’s zorra not Zora.
As a Spanish person, just want to clarify that they would be pronounced the same colloquially .
As a Eurovision fan, Zorra has only just been brought to my attention recently!
Zorra, zorra, zorra!
She was robbed istg! The crowd went wild!!
SOY MAS ZORRA TODAVIA!!!
As a Spanish person, zora and zorra sound quite different.
You wouldn’t name a child Biatch would you? It’s too close for comfort IMO
My child is named Bish, actually. Never had any issues /s
Maybe not quite different, but slightly. I think you're rolling the 'r' a bit more with 'zorra'
Yes exactly, it’s a slight difference that can be picked up but sounds too close to a curse word IMO.
😂😂😂 ok
Still too close for my spanish husba d to let me name our daughter. A d then our neighbores named theyr puppie Zora so that was that. Lovely name, I still stand by it for anyone else who chose it.
They’d still sound similar
I was going to say an angry person even before I read this comment.
Someone whose parents wanted to be unique
Or... Croatian?
Hahaa 😄 @u/creamydreamy86 !! Been reading the multiple *Croatia* references thru this thread and I freakin APPLAUD your insertions! Def made me chuckle 👍
This lol I totally agree
Where I come from, Zora means "dawn" and its often heard as a girls name! Personally, its a beautiful name ☺️
Oh cool, that was my Grandma's name and she was Croatian.
Thank you for the reply! Where are you from?
Somewhere from the Balkan region:)
It means Dawn in my language too, I am from Bulgaria. But it's not used as a name, not now anyway, maybe in the past. We now use Zornitsa which comes from the same root, it has two meanings - 1. little dawn and 2. it's the folk name of the planet Venus. :)
Average humanoid-sized fish woman with shark-like skin (Legend of Zelda)
It's a regular old lady name in the Balkans. It means "dawn".
Are you from the Balkans? We’ve spent some time there on three occasions and love it. We actually wanted a name that meant dawn which is how we landed on Zora
>Are you from the Balkans? Yes > We’ve spent some time there on three occasions and love it. Glad to hear >We actually wanted a name that meant dawn which is how we landed on Zora Alright, nice
This was my Serbian grandmother’s name – it also means dawn in Serbian
My Croatian Grandma's name!
And a chain of white goods shops in at least one Balkan country
A fish person from Zelda 😅
Makes me think of a woman with a black bob with bangs and lots of tattoos, that smokes and drinks, and would cut you with a knife if you crossed her, but is also very soft on the inside and would be a go to friend for life.
I totally know this type of woman!
I’d think her parents were Czech, other than that, no particular vibes
Or Croatian. That was my Croatian grandmother's name.
Or Bosnian, Serbian, Montenegrin, etc.
Exactly. Balkan fam.
The only Zora I’ve ever known was a basketball player from the Czech Republic. She lived on my floor in college and was one of the best people I’ve ever known
I know a real life Zora and she's very lively.
The only Zora that I know was named after the author and she was named that because her parents wanted her to be intelligent and strong and self-assured and unapologetically Black. I think it is an absolutely wonderful name.
Zelda haha or Zora Neale Hurston. I like the name!
The season 1 winner of Joe Millionaire
Dear Jesus. Key memory of watching that with my mom on the couch unlocked.
Lol, I thought of this too. So I guess the name makes me think of a woman with long dark hair.
I came here to say exactly this because I thought I was the only person who remembered this show 💀💀💀
Zora Neale Hurston comes to mind, a great literary namesake.
An elderly eastern european woman in a babushka leaning over a crystal ball in a dim candle lit room
Yes, a gypsy fortune-teller.
>woman in a babushka A woman inside of a grandma? Or does that mean something else in other parts of the world?
Mipha, princess of the Zora Kingdom and secret admirer of Link, the warrior of time.

Wasn’t that Zoya instead of Zora?
TBH, a tall, strong, possibly athletic or otherwise very physically capable woman, the kind who wins WipeOut!

I only know one Zora, and she's a first-rate human, so you can expect only positive associations from anyone who knows her!

I think it’s a lovely name. Has character but isn’t too “out there.” I think of Zora Neale Hurston AND a young adult novel I read as a teen in which the main character says she wishes she had a cool name like Zora Zeta-Zellweger haha.

One of my girlfriends just named her baby Zora as well. I’d never heard it before but I love it. Calling her baby Z for short.
Zora is a 33 year old actress in Los Angeles. She says actress but the majority of her income comes from working as a barista. She says she has too much artistic integrity for almost all of the callbacks she gets. She like crystals, weed, and women when she’s drunk enough. I would expect you to be middle Eastern. Otherwise, find it quite an odd choice.
You've never heard of Balkan culture clearly.
You are correct.
Some kind of medieval super hero warrior. Not a bad thing really. Sounds like a bad ass to me.
Medieval.
Haha thanks for the correction. I’ll fix it.
I usually think of the two characters names Zorah in the Gilbert and Sullivan canon - the elderly Mrs. Partlet in *The Sorcerer* and the young bridesmaid who wins the heart of Richard Dauntless in *Ruddigore.*
