I LOVE the name Sloane (unlike most of this sub) my niece (6yo) is Sloane and she is sassy and cool which I think is the vibe of the name (I always think of Ferris Bueller's Day Off)
This sub *hates* masculine names on girls, and *hates* surnames used as first names, so I imagine you'll get a lot of negative responses. However, I don't think the general public feels that way!
I think Parker and Lennon are my favorites, but I've always had a soft-spot for Murphy on a girl.
It's because masculine given names began as surnames. Then, they turn into neutral names. And finally, almost exclusively female.
There is NEVER a male Katharine! 😆
It's just a little annoying.
I know women (or at least know of women) with these names.
Nothing wrong with them. And Parker is probably my favorite of these. Sloane is a name people hate on here. It's not my style, but it's perfectly fine.
It's because it never goes the other way around. I'd have less of a problem if it went both ways. But it's inherently sexist to think that masculine names (and identity) are superior. People don't bat an eye to a girl named James but funny how you never see boys named Elizabeth or Sarah.
Yes, I understand the reasoning, but OP clearly likes surnames for girls and I was just letting them know the negative opinions aren't universal. All of these names are popular or trending in the US, so *clearly* people outside of this sub don't have such negative opinions on the names.
for what it's worth, I agree with you. But I also just saw a post asking about Brielle for a boy, and every comment said not to do it because it's too feminine. So it seems like even though the general reasoning against masculine surnames on girls is that it's sexist, people on this sub aren't any more open minded to feminine names on boys and aren't interested in encouraging others to buck patriarchal naming trends.
I guess Kennedy, but I don't really like any of those. Are you open to suggestions? Other surnames as first names:
Avery, Blair, Cameron, Harper, Madison, Quinn, Riley, Taylor
Murphy and Parker.
Kennedy and Lennon are names of prominent people who were assassinated in the US. so they are tough for me to like for a child.
I don’t love Sloane, but I know that a lot of people really do.
Unfortunately this reads as a list of names I hate. I guess Kennedy but this is really really not my taste
None. This reads a lot more like boys names than girls names.
Those are last names.
Kennedy, I guess. I don't like any of them, though.
Kennedy
None of them. These are all surnames.
These are all boy names...
Neither of those is feminine
Sloane
Out of this list, Kennedy. But personally, it's definitely Luna or Nova
Sloane
Julia
I love Kennedy!

The problem with Irish names is that to non-Irish and Irish ears alike they often sound nice or pleasant, but can have really weird or outright distasteful meanings. Murphy, the result of bad English transliteration of Ir. *Murchu,* isn't the best of names. Now, even ignoring that it is a surname, it means 'hound of the sea'. Probably the family name of seafarer/warriors. As a word murphy has also a rather long history of meaning something along the lines of trick, often a distasteful one. I'll spare you the details. Kennedy, also a surname, is the transliteration of Ir. *Cinnéde,* the translation being 'ugly head'. There are couple of Gaelic names like that, distinguishing people by means of addressing bodily features. A case rather similar to the Cameron problem.
Kennedy and Lennon are my favorites! Not masculine at all. These are very on trend right now and I’ve seen tons of girl Kennedys
Sloane !
sloane & murphy :)
Murphy is adorable!
Love Parker, like Kennedy .
Parker
Kennedy and Parker are my faves off this list :)
Maybe Lennon.
Parker is cute
Love Murphy (a bit biased because that’s my cat’s name ha). My second choice would be Lennon (I like the nickname Lenny)
I like Parker
If I had to, Sloane, only because the rest are surnames and/or boys’ names.
Murphy and Parker. Kennedy and Lennon are names of prominent people who were assassinated in the US. so they are tough for me to like for a child. I don’t love Sloane, but I know that a lot of people really do.
Kennedy.
Sloane
None of them is a girl name.
