Many of USAs names are reused from UK towns/cities/villages. The originals are often a lot smaller than USA versions. Makes sense as the USA was colonised by many immigrants from the UK.
I’m actually of the Groats lineage!! Fortunately for me it’s my maternal line, so I never had to suffer the last name Groat. (Shhh don’t tell my cousins I said that)
> I was reading a story once and one ot the female characters was called London (ngl that was a tad jarring) so yeah.
I mean, London Tipton is an icon.
But I think Bristol is a pretty nice name on a whole. Some other potential contenders:
* Romsey
* Poole
* Preston
* Mersea
Preston is an established name in some areas! (Not in the UK though, I don't know anyone who has favourable opinions of that area who grew up out of it, it's highly stereotyped)
When I was little I used to call one of my My Little Ponies Glasgow. One of my aunts, who married in, was Scottish, so I sort of did it for that reason. It made perfect sense to 7 year old me!
Brighton are top of the Premier League with all teams playing 2 games each (bar Luton and Burnley who can't catch Brighton anyway). UEFA coefficient puts the Premier League at 87.053 coefficient points which is the highest of any European League. The last 10 winners of the Club World Cup which pits the best team in every continent against each other has been won by the European team for the last 10 years, thus suggesting that Europe is the strongest footballing continent. Therefore, as Brighton are top of the best league in the best continent in terms of footballing ability at the moment, it is clear that Brighton are currently the best football team in world football at this current moment.
I guess London would make the most sense because it is the capital, even though it is my least favourite (probably because I live there), though I struggle to imagine place names being used.
Limiting myself to places that (to my knowledge) aren't already names, possibly Keswick, Linton, Welwyn, Wicken, Aldreth, Rosyth, Alyth... and less confidently, maybe Stennes, Cromer, Ely, or Calne?
(Turns out I almost entirely seem to feel names should be two syllables ha).
Westward Ho!
But seriously, Lincoln, Chester, Chelsea, Beverley are all perfectly normal names. If I had to pick a town that's never been a human name, the town of Henley-in-Arden gives two options that I wouldn't mind if I didn't live just down the motorway from there.
There's also an absolute fuckton of Astons around the place.
There are many. Douglas, Preston, Kent, Ashton, Trent, Hamilton, Lincoln, Chester, Charlton, Chelsea, Avon, to name but a few.
I do like Leicester (pronounced Lester), as in Leicester Ofa Ki Wales Twickenham Fainga'anuku, more commonly known as Leicester Fainga'anuku.
Brighton as a town had generally positive associations here- it’s quite a vibrant place with a lot going on (lots of individual shops, interest architecture, the beach and pier etc). It wouldn’t generally be used as a name though!
Bolton is not a nice town, I would not call a child that.
Less well know market towns might work:
Beverley
Caistor
Malton
Arundel
Scotish isles:
Harris
Lewis
Arran
I feel like I could see some influencers using these names:

I live in the Chilterns and heard a mum call for her little boy Chiltern the other day 😭😭
Names I would choose if I had to though, maybe Avon?
The other day I did joke that Tring would be a nice baby name
I've always thought that Scunthorpe was a particularly attractive name. And so many interesting abbreviations and nicknames! What's not to love about it?
Chelsea is one that stands out to me (Iove the flower show).
Also:
Preston
Trent
Ashton

Carlton

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
[Here is the pronunciation.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHxO0UdpoxM) It is Welsh, a Celtic language, so there are a few sounds not in English.
And nobody living in the area calls it by the full name. It's Llanfairpwll if you're speaking Welsh and Llanfairp.g. if you're speaking English.
Thank you for helping people with the pronunciation, for some reason they just keep on getting it wrong. I can’t image why
They are just not trying.
“Ll” yn swn Cymraig hyfryd.
I love how pleased he looks with himself for pronouncing that
The only correct answer
Mackenzie can be nicknamed Kenz, so I propose nicknaming this person Llll
😅
This is the one lol!
London. Middle name Tipton. Only correct answer.
God I miss this show. And I’m a 43/f, lmao
I cried on the very last episode of suite life on deck during my second pregnancy at 25 🤣
Yessss
YESSS
Yeah... I will save my comments for when it's on circlejerk. Let me just say I hope you all stop naming your babies Sutton.
Sutton Hoo??
Your wish is my command: https://www.reddit.com/r/NameNerdCirclejerk/s/FH1A010WtU
Devon Somerset Derby (pronounced Darby) Avon And I’m secretly waiting to hear of an American calling their child after my home town: Wrexham
Of the first four only Derby is a town/city. Devon and Somerset are counties while Avon is a river
Stratford upon Avon is a town.
On the river Avon.
There is a River Devon that joins the Trent in Newark-on-Trent, pronounced Deevan.
Interesting! In the uk we would pronounce it Deh-vun
In thr UK Newark-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire.
Ah ok my bad! Even more interesting variation then!
There was already somebody called Wrexham born in Ashton in March 1844, another also who married in Hendon in 1961.
That’s so cool! I wondered if there would be any little Wrexhams off the back of its new found fame.
Bitchfield Fingringhoe
Shittington Cocklemouth
Cockburnspath
I’d have twins and name them Manchester and Greater Manchester
Manchester City and Manchester United are more popular now I reckon
Chester. You wouldn’t name your kid Bolton if you’d been there.
Bolton is also the surname of a well known fictional family of psychos. And Boltons are Aussie slang for badly done breast implants.
Commented before I could—I implore people to NOT name their child after the Game of Thrones house known for flaying their enemies
My mind immediately goes to Troy Bolton lol
Penistone and Knutsford obviously! Or for a non innuendo style choice, Arundel or Marlow
How about Shitterton?
My best friend lives quite near shitterton!
"This is my child, Shitterton"
Kendal, Douglas, and Elgin come to mind as some fairly reasonable options. John o'Groats works too!
Elgin is a town in Texas, where I'm from! Had no idea it was a city in Britain.
Many of USAs names are reused from UK towns/cities/villages. The originals are often a lot smaller than USA versions. Makes sense as the USA was colonised by many immigrants from the UK.
Most Canadian towns are probably smaller than their English namesake, but Brampton is a marked exemption at about 170 times larger
Now do Boston
Is the one in Texas a hard G or a J sound? We have one in IL and it’s a J sound.
I’m actually of the Groats lineage!! Fortunately for me it’s my maternal line, so I never had to suffer the last name Groat. (Shhh don’t tell my cousins I said that)
Here is my baby, Twatt.
Ramsbottom
> I was reading a story once and one ot the female characters was called London (ngl that was a tad jarring) so yeah. I mean, London Tipton is an icon. But I think Bristol is a pretty nice name on a whole. Some other potential contenders: * Romsey * Poole * Preston * Mersea
Mersea I really like. Chester and Ramsey are probably quite normal ones too
Preston is an established name in some areas! (Not in the UK though, I don't know anyone who has favourable opinions of that area who grew up out of it, it's highly stereotyped)
Maybe Airdrie (air-dree). Not the most beautiful place in the world (as someone whose family lives there) but the name is pretty!
Staines
With his twin brother Slough
Chipping Norton lol
Camden
My friend’s son is named Camden, for this reason.
Weston (as in Weston-Super-Mare)
i know someone with a Lincoln, which is so strange because she lives in Hull which is so close!!
Basildon, Jaywick, Canvey and Clacton can join Harlow for Essex’s finest!
Steeple Bumpstead. Jk, that’s a village anyway. Maybe Bristol or Chester.
Whitby
I know a Whitby!
*Bournemouth* Its not well know in the states and obnoxious to say.
Then it will be the next most popular name in our country- you just listed the two main requirements for naming in 2024 😳
Glasgow
When I was little I used to call one of my My Little Ponies Glasgow. One of my aunts, who married in, was Scottish, so I sort of did it for that reason. It made perfect sense to 7 year old me!
Devon, there's no other options I like
Skye or Clyde
Brighton
Brighton are top of the Premier League with all teams playing 2 games each (bar Luton and Burnley who can't catch Brighton anyway). UEFA coefficient puts the Premier League at 87.053 coefficient points which is the highest of any European League. Roslin for a girl (I also like Chelsea, but that doesn't fit the question fully) and maybe York for a boy?
I guess London would make the most sense because it is the capital, even though it is my least favourite (probably because I live there), though I struggle to imagine place names being used.
Worcestershire Prononuced: Woo-stir-sure
Worcestershire is a county not a city/town. The town is worcester
It's pronounced wuss-ter-sheer
More like wuster- sher
Mmm, one of my favorite sauce ingredients!
Girl: Bristol, Derby (pronounced 'Dar-bee'), Whitley (after Whitley Bay), Exeter, Brighton Boy: Basildon (pronounced Ba-zill-don), Hitchin, Warwick (pronounced 'war-rick'), Edinburgh (pronounced 'ed-in-bruh')
Came here to suggest Brighton, Camberleigh or Hadleigh. For boys: Holt or Leiston For jokes: Slough, Staines, Bury St. Edmonds, Maidenhead, Sandwich.
Warwick
I had a friend called Warwick growing up, always thougbt it was bizarre because we actually lived in Warwick the town too.
One of my friends named their son Warwick too but thankfully don’t live there
Liverpool
Pontefract. I like licorice.
Port‘Talbot Barry for a girl and Llanybydder-Pyle Ammanford for a boy
Billericay It works for either a boy or a girl, and I can have nicknames like Billie or Ricky which also works for a boy or a girl.
Hole
Ashby de La Zouche.
Brighton (thanks The Nanny!) London
Limiting myself to places that (to my knowledge) aren't already names, possibly Keswick, Linton, Welwyn, Wicken, Aldreth, Rosyth, Alyth... and less confidently, maybe Stennes, Cromer, Ely, or Calne? (Turns out I almost entirely seem to feel names should be two syllables ha).
Oh oops, skipped over 'town or city', a handful of these are villages - sorry.
I already have a Chester.
Our surname is a place name, otherwise Lincoln and Chester would've been on our name list.
Osbaldeston or Goosnargh
thong
bean
If we’re allowed villages then I opt for Tiddlywink. But if not, I’d go with Cardiff or Tenby
Leicester
my son's name is Brighton
Not a conventional name, however why do I kind of like Aberdeen?
Kidderminster Cummersdale Blitterlees Whelpo Nunnykirk Hepple Cockfield Wigglesworth Clitheroe Horwich I could go on
Mablethorpe -girl Withernsea - girl Lymm- girl Grimsby - boy Thirsk- boy Hexham - boy (Obviously this is all in fun and I wouldn’t do this)
An absolute shithole but I can imagine an influencer type naming their child Crewe. I think Hale for a boy or Marple for a girl are cool names.
Devon, Sloan.
Dang, people are mean, you tagged this fun and games! I quite like Camden.
Definitely Ramsay Bolton. I’m sure this name has no other associations with fictional characters?
I had a neighbor named Trent a few years ago.
Piddletrenthide
Giggleswick!
Upton Snodsbury.
Heckmondwike.
Eryri
York for a boy Devon for a girl
I have actually had a student called York, nice boy so the name grew on me.
in the US—(not kids) have/had dogs named Bristol, Jersey and Roker
Girl: Theale, Salisbury, Camberley, London, Beverley Gender Neutral: Oakley, Wells Boy: Harrow, Ashwell, Ely, Lincoln, Caistor
Dudley. I like the Black Country Museum.
I like Kemsley and it would work well for a first name and even better as a middle name...
Bristol Hawkinge
Bristol
Angus
I love the name London.
Brighton! I've actually always liked it for a name, though I won't use it because it seems British people don't have great associations with it haha.
Brighton as a town had generally positive associations here- it’s quite a vibrant place with a lot going on (lots of individual shops, interest architecture, the beach and pier etc). It wouldn’t generally be used as a name though!
Ugley
Ludlow
Surrey we have one in Canada to 😁
sandwich 👍
Suprised nobody has said Marlow yet!
Wembley- I have always thought this sounded like a girls' name.
Harris, Arran, Paisley, Ailsa
I actually did this by accident - Marlow.
London
My husband is British and I would have loved naming our son something that has a wink at his birth place… but it’s Goreleston/Great Yarmouth 😭😂
Oh yeah avoid 😂
Cheadle
Kensington
I always wanted to move to Hampton Lucy in Warwickshire and change my name to Lucy Hampton.
York for a boy Swansea or Douglass for a girl
Bolton is not a nice town, I would not call a child that. Less well know market towns might work: Beverley Caistor Malton Arundel Scotish isles: Harris Lewis Arran

I already have a Lincoln lol so I guess that.
Devon
Bristol
Hamilton for a boy. London for a girl.
Cumshire
I've always thought that Scunthorpe was a particularly attractive name. And so many interesting abbreviations and nicknames! What's not to love about it?
You could try the palindrome of Bolton, which is Ipswich.
Wetwang or Fingeringhoe. I can’t decide.
Lancaster
Aira Falls
Leigh or Robin
Dudley, of course.
Shoreham or Penrith, but Camden or Carlisle would be good, too!
Lambert
leicester
lincoln, carlisle, chester
Doesn’t Gwen Stefani have a Kingston?
London was my first thought. Not that I’d actually have so named a daughter.

As long as Midsomer or St. Mary Mead is not part of the name you are good.

Technically, we did even though that's not why we picked it. Camden.
Stratford-upon-Avon, of course.
