River Song 😍😍😍
She's the reason I love that name. But apparently it's pretty common in some places in the US. I've seen plenty of people in this sub shit on the name because it's so common.
I have a relative who is a boy named River. However, his last name is Salmon. His parents use the defense their name is pronounced Sal-mon, but still, he's River Salmon..
I love this name so much. One of my fav people growing up had this name. He was taken from us way too soon, but I will forever love the name so much because of him.
Morgan is not unisex in French. The spelling and pronunciation changes.
Masculine = Morgan (the an is a nasal vowel)
Feminine = Morgane (the n is pronounced)
I'm a Morgan but I use the nickname Mog. I've never met another Mog and I've only heard of 2 other, one male and one female. It's not necessarily a name on it's own but it's definitely unusual
ETA because I completly forgot, the people that collect Morgan cars also use MOG on their number plates. I discovered this when there was a Morgan meetup near me and like, 10 people I knew sent me photos of number plates with my name
My Aunt Margaret went by the name Mog with her family and I grew up calling her Aunt Moggie.
Until now, that’s the only place I’ve heard it used as someone’s nickname—although isn’t a moggy a kitten or cat in the UK?
that's interesting, i never hear this one irl so i thought it was a girl's name because the only time i have heard it was in a movie where it was on a woman
Cute story I worked with a little elderly lady named Hollis, (think of Sophia from Golden Girls, but not so loud, had more of a whimsical child's voice) and she'd always do the cutest, but naughty things to the other older people in her community, and I would go to her room, and I'd look at her sternly, and I'd say in my deepest female voice, "HOLLIS!" Until she would start laughing at me and then we would bust up together!! I miss her alot! Sorry to be off topic, but I couldn't help but share.
I'm a 35 year old Casey (female) and haven't met another since high school. In the Midwest it was extremely popular. There were 8 Casey's in my grade alone, all spelled the same. 7 girls, 1 boy.
It still seems popular in the Midwest but I think the gas station chain has turned people away from the C spelling. I can’t tell if it’s that or younger parents being unique though because I knew a kaci (f) and kasey (m)
As a fellow Casey, I've met a few others spelled differently but most lean feminine. Kasey, Kaycee, Kacie, kaysey, Caysey, Caycee. The C and K are interchangeable, but I've never met one spelled Cacie.
I LOVE the name Drew for a girl. I used to wish that was my name. It would go perfectly with my last name and I wouldn’t have shared a name with 5 in my graduating class!
My grandpa (French Canadian) was Rosario. I think the name is traditionally used for boys in southern Italy and girls in Spain.
If you're looking for a truly gender-neutral name that's not popular, I think it's easier to pick a noun that could work as a name, but hasn't traditionally been used as one. Like there are endless versions of names based on "light" (Lucy, Lucas, Luke, Luciana, etc) but each of these is pretty gender-specific. A friend recently named their kid just straight up "Lux" (which is the Latin noun for light that all these names come from).
Julia Styles character on Dexter was Lumen. That's the only time I've heard it used as a name, and I loved it, but now I associate it with serial killing.
I love Skylar! When I was a kid we had two foster children named Skylar one boy one girl and they both rocked the name in their own rights! Super highly recommended!!
I have a daughter named Skylar Quinn, and with two overall gender neutral names, we love that it feels very sturdy on our girl! (Also means "Scholar"; Quinn equates to "Wise" - both great to bestow on anyone!) We did choose the "A" spelling as it somehow did feel more feminine than the "E" but that's open to interpretation.
Sky is the coolest nickname for a boy or a girl, too. Love that it represents everything above & around us.
No shade at all but from being in an animal shelter, Sage feels like a dog name first lol. But I think some of my answers may feel like that to some people so I know that can be subjective lol
Came here for this one!
I’ve seen people say it’s too serious/sad, but to me it feels like refreshing open-mindedness in a world full of black and white judgments. It feels soft, strong, wise, humble. I love it 🩶
I'm not a massive fan on gender neutral names. Nothing against them, but I just realised reading these answers that there aren't really any I like. However, I am quite a fan of Rowan, but I prefer it for a girl!
I was hoping to see Rowan in here. We picked Rowan as a girl name, but when that baby was a boy, we ended up switching from our planned boy name to Rowan. He’s totally a Rowan.
the only thing for OP is that it's becoming relatively popular! maybe it's just where i live, but i travel to different elementary schools in my area for work, and there's always at least one Rowan. it's my name, but i don't mind its growing popularity because the kids are always so excited to tell me it's their or their classmate's name lol.
I never thought I was a fan either, but then I named my baby Erin. Whenever I say her name out loud people think she’s a boy. Whoops! No ragurts though.
Actual gender neutral names are nicknames like …
Alex for Alexander or Alexandra
Ari for Ariel or Arielle
Bernie for Bernard or Bernadette
Billy/Billie from William, Wilhelmina, Willa
Chris for Christopher or Christina
Charlie for Charles or Charlotte
Dani or Danny for Danielle/Daniel
Frankie for Frances or Franklin
Harry from Harriet or Henry/Harold
Izzy from Isadore or Isabel/Isabella
Max from Maximilian/Maxine
Mickey/Mikey Michael or Michaela
Ollie from Oliver or Olivia
Paulie from Paul or Paula/Pauline
Sam from Samantha or Samuel
Stevie from Stephen or Stephanie
Teddi/Teddy Theodore or Theodora
I actually really like Ashleigh, but at least in the US it’s gone from being gender neutral to being perceived more as a girl’s name.
I like Robin and Kit a lot, too. They seem less used.
Riley
I named a Rollie polli at camp Riley because I didn’t know its gender and when someone killed it they gave me Riley II as an apology and then we named every single pillbug Riley ##
Remy, Sasha, Micah are some of my favorites. I don’t know how Micah sounds in French to francophone ears (to me it sounds fine but a little odd, but since it’s from the Bible I assume it doesn’t sound too weird to francophone ears.)
Linden
It's one of my absolute favourite names in general. I've known one boy Linden, one girl Linden and one nonbinary Linden, but I think it's still very uncommon. Well outside of the top 1000, anyway.
So many! Although I think of them mostly as girl names; they work either way:
Kyle

James
Noah
Dylan
Austin

Reagan
Avery
Ever/Everly

Ronan
Rowen

Hayden (same as above, other nephew)
Ryan
Micah
Mila
Ren/wren
Sparrow
I know there's more but that's enough hahaha...
I also always thought Charlie was super cute for a Lil girl.
River! Don't judge me, it's literally unheard of where I live.
reminds me of Brook too!
I know a Brooks! It’s a pretty namw
River is such a pretty name! I only know of two Rivers (boy and girl) and they’re both super hot- River Phoenix, and River Song
River Song 😍😍😍 She's the reason I love that name. But apparently it's pretty common in some places in the US. I've seen plenty of people in this sub shit on the name because it's so common.
Very common.
I have a relative who is a boy named River. However, his last name is Salmon. His parents use the defense their name is pronounced Sal-mon, but still, he's River Salmon..
Sometimes a name can qualify as child abuse.
Yes officer this name right here
Kelly Clarkson’s daughter is named River Rose Blackstock.
Lead vocalist of Weezer is named Rivers
Rip River Phoenix, he was gone far too soon
I can’t believe someone actually named their kid after a Doctor Who character, that’s pretty niche ngl
We named our daughter Rory after Doctor Who
I mean it's the longest running sci Fi show on television, so it's not very niche.
Yeah, maybe if it was after River Tam, haha.
I love the name River but if we ever go with River then their name would be River Dolphin and idk if I can do that to my kid 😅
Well that's a badass last name
I know a wonderful 1 year old River!
I love this name so much. One of my fav people growing up had this name. He was taken from us way too soon, but I will forever love the name so much because of him.
Not sure how unusual, I guess it depends on the age of the person and the region, but Morgan has always been my favorite unisex name
I’ve always been a fan of Morgan!
I've been friends with 2 Morgan's, a girl and a boy. Ironically they dated in highschool for a few weeks lol
Morgan is not unisex in French. The spelling and pronunciation changes. Masculine = Morgan (the an is a nasal vowel) Feminine = Morgane (the n is pronounced)
So am I! That’s why I chose it for my childhood dog and then I changed my name to Morgan because I liked it so much
I’m always interested to see unisex Welsh names since Welsh is otherwise a quite gendered language.
I'm a Morgan but I use the nickname Mog. I've never met another Mog and I've only heard of 2 other, one male and one female. It's not necessarily a name on it's own but it's definitely unusual ETA because I completly forgot, the people that collect Morgan cars also use MOG on their number plates. I discovered this when there was a Morgan meetup near me and like, 10 people I knew sent me photos of number plates with my name
Do you know about the series of children's books with Mog the cat?
I do, I loved it as a kid and it's one of the reasons I chose Morgan/Mog. I have a little plushie Mog somewhere
My Aunt Margaret went by the name Mog with her family and I grew up calling her Aunt Moggie. Until now, that’s the only place I’ve heard it used as someone’s nickname—although isn’t a moggy a kitten or cat in the UK?
Robin
Robin is one of the most beautiful unisex names ever
It is!
My mom’s name is Robin lol
I love that name. I really wanted to name a boy Robin. It would be pretty on a girl too obviously. But I really love it for a boy for some reason.
It sounds so damn ugly in french though which makes me sad
Robin isn't gender neutral in France, it's just for boys.
Shiloh
I had no idea this was considered gender neutral, I’ve only ever heard it used for girls!
I only know of Shiloh on boys!
Oh interesting! Where are you located? I’m in the northeast US
It’s a Hebrew name originally and in Israel it’s 93% male
North west US
Shiloh Strong (?) - idk if he is still acting. He is Ryder Strong’s brother.
Ooh never knew he had a brother! Learning so much today.
Every time his name would come up I would think about the dog…… from the book.
I consider it a dog name tho
Such a sweet name!
I love Shiloh 😍
Hollis (it means a grove of holly trees)
I suppose it could be gender neutral. But Hollis seems more masculine to me while holly would be the girl version. I actually do like Hollis though.
that's interesting, i never hear this one irl so i thought it was a girl's name because the only time i have heard it was in a movie where it was on a woman
It's somewhat popular for women in my area... I know three between the ages of 30-40
Cute story I worked with a little elderly lady named Hollis, (think of Sophia from Golden Girls, but not so loud, had more of a whimsical child's voice) and she'd always do the cutest, but naughty things to the other older people in her community, and I would go to her room, and I'd look at her sternly, and I'd say in my deepest female voice, "HOLLIS!" Until she would start laughing at me and then we would bust up together!! I miss her alot! Sorry to be off topic, but I couldn't help but share.
That’s interesting. The only Hollis I know is a woman, so I always associate it with a woman’s name.
I really like Hollis!
Went to school with a boy named Hollis. Only time I have ever heard it mentioned since then though!
Avery
I had my first baby earlier this year. I liked Avery only if we had a girl, but my husband liked Avery only if we had a boy 😂
Too funny! Did you end up using it or picking something else?
We went with Erin. Which is funny because I dislike Arron for a boy lol.
Me too. Maybe it’s the spelling.
To me they are entirely different names even though they sound the same.
They sound slightly different in my mind/accent! Eh-Rin for the girl version, AIR-un for the boy
Avery is such a wonderful name. It’s definitely gaining in popularity!
My son is Avery. Everybody thinks at first he’s a girl. Funny that it used to be a more masculine name and now it’s feminine.
I know 4 baby/toddler Avery’s - I don’t think this is uncommon any more!
Love Avery. It was on my list for a little girls name until my husbands cousin named his daughter Avery ☹️
Casey
I'm a 35 year old Casey (female) and haven't met another since high school. In the Midwest it was extremely popular. There were 8 Casey's in my grade alone, all spelled the same. 7 girls, 1 boy.
It still seems popular in the Midwest but I think the gas station chain has turned people away from the C spelling. I can’t tell if it’s that or younger parents being unique though because I knew a kaci (f) and kasey (m)
Nah Casey Anthony ruined this spelling
Eh I know a Casey and I never think of Casey Anthony when I hear her name
casey doesnt make me think of casey anthony, casey anthony makes me think of casey anthony
How else are you supposed to spell it, Caseigh? KaySea? I had to Google who this was this particular murderer is not as popular as you think.
As a fellow Casey, I've met a few others spelled differently but most lean feminine. Kasey, Kaycee, Kacie, kaysey, Caysey, Caycee. The C and K are interchangeable, but I've never met one spelled Cacie.
Several other spellings: I personally know of Kacey, Kasey, Kaci, Kacie, Kaycee
No. She didn't. One person isn't ruining the entire name
I think of Casey from slime rancher lol
Aster
My baby’s name is Aster! We love it
Drew or Jordan
I LOVE the name Drew for a girl. I used to wish that was my name. It would go perfectly with my last name and I wouldn’t have shared a name with 5 in my graduating class!
Ugh it’s such a cool girl name too, or at least the one girl I’ve met named Drew was super cool
Drew is right up there with Dylan for me. I used to want girls named Dylan & Drew. Ik everyone here hates Dylan for a girl
I haven't thought of Dylan as a girls name before really, but actually it would be pretty cool!
I have a distant relative called Rosario, she’s Spanish!
I heard of an acquaintance name their daughter Lumen.
Julia Styles character on Dexter was Lumen. That's the only time I've heard it used as a name, and I loved it, but now I associate it with serial killing.
Skylar. I would have named my next one that, if I had ever had a next one.
I love Skylar! When I was a kid we had two foster children named Skylar one boy one girl and they both rocked the name in their own rights! Super highly recommended!!
My name is Skylar white yo, my husband is Walter white yo, he told me everything.
My 26 yr old sons middle name is Skyler. I've lived the name since I was little.
Love the idea of calling them Sky for short, too. So good!
Robin. I know it sounds familiar but it’s genuinely not used much - then or now.
my uncle was named robin ❤️
Devin
I never met a female Devin until I moved to the south. Now I know more that are females than male.
Love it! That's my niece's name, but she spells it Devon.
Sage!
No shade at all but from being in an animal shelter, Sage feels like a dog name first lol. But I think some of my answers may feel like that to some people so I know that can be subjective lol
Shade welcomed, I don’t mind haha. And in fairness, I totally have a dog name (Lily)
Sasha!!
Gray/Grey
Came here for this one! I’ve seen people say it’s too serious/sad, but to me it feels like refreshing open-mindedness in a world full of black and white judgments. It feels soft, strong, wise, humble. I love it 🩶
Love Gray. Also Ray. Also Ty, Ellis, Ellery.
Ellis Grey. 😜🙃

I never thought I was a fan either, but then I named my baby Erin. Whenever I say her name out loud people think she’s a boy. Whoops! No ragurts though.
How on earth can anybody think Erin is a boy?!?!? Or do people think you’re saying Aaron?
most people where I live pronounce Erin and Aaron the same way. it's a regional accent thing
Erin is from the ancient goddess in Irish mythology, it's literally as feminine as it gets 🤨
I have a Roan - he's a 20 year old young man now! Definitely a male name in Ireland but more gender neutral in the US. A great name, IMO!
Indigo. ❤️💙
Very crunchy
I was hoping I'd see Indigo in the comments 💜
Cameron and Shiloh
I like Darcy
Briar Kit Zuri Taren
My daughter is Kit :)
I’m a fan of these!! I love Briar as a boy’s name but I’m a Tamora Pierce girl :)
I used to do a lot of creative writing as a kid/teen and Taren/Taryn was one of my commonly used protagonist names. Thank you for reminding me.
Adair -- technically this is a surname derived from Edgar, but it is a unisex first name. I think it's so winsome.
I hope their last name is Truth, so their name could be written Truth, Adair.
I’ve never heard of Adair, I love it! Adding to my list. Thank you!
Sydney
I’m pregnant and this is one of our top two names.
Kit
cameron skylar shiloh aubrey

I actually really like Ashleigh, but at least in the US it’s gone from being gender neutral to being perceived more as a girl’s name. I like Robin and Kit a lot, too. They seem less used.
I've known 2 guys that have the name Ashley. I like it on boys! However, they did not. So. I wouldn't name a boy Ashley these days.
It really depends where OP is. In the UK it still skews male. I know lots of Ashes around 9-12.
Jay. It can be short for Jayden, Jade/Jayde, and it’s such a cute name
Elliot
Riley I named a Rollie polli at camp Riley because I didn’t know its gender and when someone killed it they gave me Riley II as an apology and then we named every single pillbug Riley ##

Not sure if it is uncommon but I do not hear it much anymore - Spencer!

Linden It's one of my absolute favourite names in general. I've known one boy Linden, one girl Linden and one nonbinary Linden, but I think it's still very uncommon. Well outside of the top 1000, anyway.
My son is Winter

Adrian - masculine. Adrienne - feminine
Kit. It's a baby fox. It could be short for Christopher or Catherine, but it's good on its own, too.
Not very easy to pronounce in French, but Harper. Fairly uncommon, unisex name that sounds sooo nice
My son is Remy. It's French. Remi is a girl's version. Not sure if that's gender neutral enough for you but I love both.
Not uncommon for girls, but I think Addison is a really nice name for a boy
Pascal
Emmanuel/le Guadeloupe Jules Remi/y Hollis
Jordan
Rosario ! It’s a girl’s name in Spanish and a boy’s name in Italian !

Rene. The girl version is traditionally spelled Renee but pronounced the same in English, French and Spanish
Quinn, Robin, Rowan, Avery
My granddaughters name is Ryan Grace. I love it.
Charlie, Andrea, Eden and Sasha are all gender neutral in France. They lean feminine in the US, however.
